Battle of Alesia: A king in the Middle which is Vercingetorix surrounded by a few white rooks. These are surrounded by queens (that are black) and a king to represent Caeser and his army. Surrounding that is a huge army of what ever you want.
The purpose of the battle of Thermopylae was not to hold out for reinforcements. In fact, it was to beat the Persians right then and there. The Greeks were used to small-scale warfare because city-states, so they put together what would be a massive army in their eyes to fight the Persians. This army consisted of 7000 Greeks by modern estimate, including the 300 Spartans, Leonidas, and volunteer soldiers from all the other city states, mainly from Thebes and Thespis. However, the plan completely changed when the Persians showed up not only earlier than expected but with much much larger numbers than expected, with modern estimates between 70k and 300k. The Greeks almost fled before the battle, but Leonidas was able to keep them all together to fight. At first the Greeks were holding out quite well and the persian army seemed close to breaking due to superior metal Greek shields, defensive hoplite tactics, and the narrowness of the path of Thermopylae. However, the Greeks were betrayed by Ephialtes, who showed Xerxes a mountain pass that lead to behind the Greek encampment. At that point, Leonidas sent most of the army home to tell the city-states to be ready to defend, while his remaining Spartans with Thebian and Thespian volunteers stay behind to hold off the Persians as long as possible. No reinforcements were ever coming. What started with an intention to defeat the Persians ended with the intent to delay them and buy the city-states time.
Should have done the Battle of Alesia, where Caesar's siege lines, surrounding a Gaulish town, was encircled by Gaulish forces, which were then encircled by more Romans.
