A+ commentary. I've lived in Japan for nearly 10 years and how I love it when people try to tell me how Japan is and how Japanese people feel about things like this. What you said is correct - people hate this behavior but few speak up about it either out of (legitimate) fear of social ostracism or because of the good ol' tried and true Japanese philosophy of "shikatanai" (it can't be helped). FFS, this is a country where a woman who is assaulted by two male fans is expected and forced to apologize for "causing trouble".
For real. It's disgusting how much American weebs love to speak on behalf of Japan, despite most of them having an *extremely* limited and fetishized view on the country and its culture. Especially with all the right-wing reactionaries this fanbase has created.
Seven deadly sins immediately comes to mind. The main character just gropes the female lead at any given moment for the sake of “comedy” when it just leaves me uncomfortable. My favorite anime is Kill la Kill so it’s not like I’m new to this, but the way it’s included into seven deadly is really bad piece of an otherwise good anime.
True. That's the first thing I thought of as well. That part of it made me really uncomfortable. It sounded and looked interesting, so I made myself keep watching, cause I've seen a lot of anime with perverts, and women that let themselves be treated like the. But in the end I stopped watching because of him always doing that and her being okay. It's really sad cause it seemed good. But I don't want to feel uncomfortable while watching something I want to enjoy
I wish more people would start speaking up about this, A lot of people in the anime community don't want to talk about blatant issues like sexism, racism, and homophobia that have constantly plagued anime. They always chalk it up to "it's a different culture" but that has been disproven time and time again.
@@jamalwalker04 exactly. There's been a bigger and bigger push for progressive reform in Japan for years but it's still very much a machismo based culture.
Gosh we need more videos like these. A lot of animé fans don't want to acknowledge it but damn sexism, one sided women characters and sexual harassment takes up the majority of nowadays Anime series. It is SAD
Yes I agree, But I will say that Animes are sexist towards BOTH Men and women. Most of the Animes depicts "women Beating men" as Cute, Funny and Justified. You can easily see these in all top shonen Animes. But yes I agree that harrasement against women is also a very big problem.
It's a very big problem in anime, but it also is in.. Basically everything. I wish people would just treat eachother like human beings instead of some sex object
@@cheasgsyu2465 Hon, that's not how it works. Yes, a man needs to be confident, but if the girl is clearly uncomfortable or doesn't show any romantic interest in him he needs to back off. Same goes to women. Confidence is attractive, but confidence doesn't mean be rude to the person. Confidence and arrogance are completely different from each other. Be kind to everyone and respect their boundaries.
@@lampad4549 the fact the are or were in a relationship is not a excuse or a free pass to sexually harass your partner. Elizabeth is clearly uncomfortable when Meliodas is doing those things to her.
It follows the trope that a woman needs to be worn down, that women don’t know what they want, and women are playing hard to get. I can’t tell you how scary and uncomfortable it is when I reject a guy and he thinks it’s a game when I repeatedly say,”No.” He is utterly confused if my rejection isn’t due to having a boyfriend. As if he’s entitled to a,”Yes,” if I’m single.
- I can’t tell you how scary and uncomfortable it is when I reject a guy and he thinks it’s a game when I repeatedly say,”No.” He is utterly confused if my rejection isn’t due to having a boyfriend You can say same thing about women. I have rejected few girls(especially after i started getting fit) and they just don't understand how some men don't care about relationships.
@@Jepze158 You're drawing conclusions from your own experience and somehow extending it to imply that there isn't a gender imbalance in how these things happen. But there is, women experience it far, FAR more, and saying "hey it happened to me too" doesn't really address the problem.
Great vid. This kinda stuff bugs the hell out of me, not just for characterization reasons but also because it feels immersion-breaking. Some of the interpersonal stuff that happens in these shows, the reactions and repercussions are so out there that they're less believable than even the fantasy elements.
I agree 100% I Generally Don't Like TWO Things In Animes, 1). Women being harassed/objectified as Joke. 2). Depicting "Girls Beating Boys" as funny, cute and justified, but gender reversal as Abuse and bad.
@@swaroop2518 I feel like your 2 reason is debatable without context. what if the protag is doing something to provoke getting hit? (the protagonist isn't always innocent) like sneaking into the woman baths to "sneak a peek?" most of the time the slapstick humor is played off as as karma or punishment for the objectification or harassment of the female characters (not to make the female character look "cute") meaning your 1 and 2 reason often bleed into each other and 2 is just a reaction to 1. I grew up watching anime's with "lovable male perverts" like master Roshi from DBZ, or Sanji from One Piece, and Naruto. they all frequently do stupid things at one point or another that deserve some kind of rebuke for their actions, or them objectifying woman, the pretend violence is played as a relief from that. the violence isn't treated as real, even within the show itself. wounds, bruises or bumps disappear magically once the "joke" ends. because IT is just slapstick humor. Still, they are never seriously punished for anything they do. the comedic violence is more of a light slap on the wrist and is played for laughs then anything. there's an anime called Aho Girl who serves as an example of a this same kind of slapstick humor. the mc girl gets hit and beat by the dude mc. its not abuse nor it is framed as abuse in the show. male SJW's seem to be rejoicing that men are finally getting justice against woman from the way male authors are writing their anime's. its hilariously deluded.
This also seriously rubs off on the anime community, there’s so much causal sexism that’s never addressed and whenever someone tries to bring it up they’re called a snowflake. This is some incredible commentary!
YES..I especially hate the word snowflake. I always strive to reach my ideas why this is so wrong, and they would say oh it is just joke, stop being a snowflake etc. And that makes me mad. Just bc sexualization in anime is presented through entertainment purposes, does not make it less than wrong. I hate how female characters in some anime is utterly useless and just there for the shitty fanservice and that’s why I stick with anime like attack on titan bc theres no pointless fanservice and pure plot. I wish this would end already.

How about that whole 'girl grabbing her best friend's boobs' thing being seen as a cute little joke that all girl friends do with each other? That's a little misleading and a bit problematic lol
A lot of anime fans really don't like it when people criticize anime and get extremely defensive. A lot of anime fans also don't really think about analyzing the themes of their media, and are not interested in hearing out alternate perspectives. It's frustrating to talk to these people.

This is exactly why I avoid shows like seven deadly sins , seeing sexual stuff in anime makes me cringe 😫 but it really wanna watch a anime that has a female main character those are hard to find and they’re usually about idols
Don’t forget the films of Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon, Nadia The Secret of Blue Water, or Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (at least in that case all the sexual stuff was done on Panty’s own initiative)
My friend I give you a standing ovation. Sadly I bet that 99% of your dislikes on this video are NOT because of flaws in your argument but because of anger. Somehow by you having a conversation about something they love they see it as a personal ATTACK from you! As if by calling out the wrongs in the anime you are calling them out by name... Keep up the good work.
yeah or it is complete denial by people who have no decent respect for us women. Imagine defending dudes groping women with no consent. Most animes can exist without this and could have been triple A animes. Why are movies from Studio Ghibli one of the best anime movies and super popular? They don't use this disgusting form of fan service. Imagine the female protagonist from spirited away would get grabbed on her ass by a pervert. It's the first stage for child porn. Most people are embarassed to say they are anime fans, because most animes produce this "fan service" aka footage of underage animegirls getting groped.

Thank you for talking about these topics critically, when so many other "Anime RUclipsrs" perspective on women in anime doesn't go much deeper than "best girl" and "biggest tits".
oh, this is SO refreshing. i think you're the first anime youtuber i've watched that actually gives two shits about stuff like this, and your thoughtfulness from a socioeconomic perspective is SO great. kudos times a thousand 🙏🙏🙏
I think it never gets talked about because only veteran anime watchers have large channels about it, and those people become desensitized to it. like how america is kinda desensitized to school shootings.
There's another youtuber you might like. (Or maybe this is them) who talks about Yuri anime and has comments similar to this on series that hang onto harmful tropes. If this is them, and they changed there name - then I feel super stupid. LOL
Anime has had a sexual harassment problem since forever; perhaps it's just particularly apparent in this case because it's a show _about_ sexual harassment (at least in part) and it _still_ fails spectacularly.
@@mor4439 Not all anime shows are full of it, and if you're like me and have been watching anime for the duration of your life, some of these motifs aren't even recognizable until you go back for another rewatch. Furthermore, you can enjoy something and still criticize aspects of it. I hate fruit cakes, but that doesn't mean I hate cake within itself.
Honestly I've kind of stopped watching anime all together because as a woman, seeing those types of "jokes" and just how much anime objectifies and over-sexualise women make me extremely uncomfortable. That clip you showed of the dude harrasing her at night while she is alone and he is with a friend is something that I genuinely have to worry about when I go out alone to walk my dog. Just the other day a man followed me on his bike while actively ogling at me.
Update: I’ve been watching BNA on Netflix and been surprised at how respectfully it’s portraying women both through modest character design and story wise. I haven’t finished it though so there could be problematic elements, but so far I can recommend it.
To make you aware: there are shoujo and josei shows that cater to female audiences and their interests. The show's that you seemingly feel offended by are probably those catered towards male audiences. I never understood people who criticize some shows all the while shows that might cater to their interests and desires are right around the corner. What I want to say is: the anime industry is strongly subdivided into target audiences/demographics. Unlike western entertainment they don't try to make one medium cater to everyone. So just watch shoujo shows and josei instead of complaining about shows that you arent the target audience for.
im so sorry that incident happened to you, i just started watching im standing on 1 million lives and already got uncomfortable in the second episode and so on, ik that boys are stronger than girls but the way they delivered the message was kinda sexist and offensive? idk but ill keep watching and give rates to this anime
"SJW" is a word that has become meaningless through constant misapplication, which is sad because people who meet the actual meaning of one (someone who uses a poorly developed and extremist view of social justice to act like a twat) do still exist and need to be called out.
Considering the concept of SJWs, as most of the internet likes to pretend exists doesnt really exist and is basically "Evil all powerful yet for some reason also extremly weak boogeyman number 14578 that is ruining western civilisation by not allowing me to laugh at rape and say the n-word, we are under attack...pls shower me with money on my patreon"...yeah, obviously. I mean I guess *somewhere* some people that would fit that term exist, but not like most people on the internet seem to believe. Also Japan has a truckload of varying issues it really has to deal with someday.
@@sherlocksmuuug6692 Wow. Are you that delusional to say that SJWs don't exist. Have you not seen history for the past few years?! Then again, the Hollow Cost never happened. Ha ha ha ha. Well... If your're not American then you will assume that. More of a blissful ignorant statement than something incite full. Regardless, I find your statement to be... Amusing if anything else.
Media is powerful. It teaches messages in a very deep, realistic, convincing, and often manipulative way. To say that all media is completely harmless and has absolutely 0 effect on real life society is completely ignorant. Media is always influenced by real life in many ways, so it's their own twisted testimony actively endorsed for all to see and contemplate. Seeing and hearing the same messages over and over is teaching and normalizing. The fact we get so emotionally attached to fictional characters, stories, and worlds alone is proof that media effects people. It's so much worse than just sexism. People who defend lolicon and disregard this make me sick.
@@progunjack5556 No because the nature of video games as a medium is completely different than anime. The fact that it's only a game is made obvious by the fact that you're hold a controller and not a gun, and all of the in-game stuff like points and mini games. The medium goes out of its way to tell you that it's only a game. However, part of it is also the subject matter. The violence is not the problem. It's the context that violence is put in. For example, in most shooters, the setting is war, so the violence is thematically appropriate. The violence reinforces the realism of the setting. Now compare that to an actual rape simulator that's on Steam, encouraging the player to project onto abusers. What does a rape simulator reinforce? Both of these examples have a narrative. One is justified. The other is not. You need to understand that media is not totally separate from reality. As Under the Scope puts it, "media is a mirror through which we project an image of the world." Media is a reflection of reality because media always naturally comments on the real world. Media is inspired by reality. For example, The Incredibles is a sensational, yet realistic portrayal of family. This is why anime, movies, etc are all much more manipulative than video games. Because it's not a medium that interacts with the audience via levels, points, and mini games for fun. It's a medium that speaks directly to the audience and seeks to teach them a lesson. Imagine if Shoya never redeemed himself in A Silent Voice and loaded Shoko's character with ableist stereotypes. That would've validated and reinforced and glorified harmful narratives that are pushed by reality. And speaking of, lots of anime, movies, etc base their stories in the real world. The only difference is that it's animated. So the last thing society needs is for society is to give abusers and pedophiles glorifying representation in media, because then you'll get sympathizers on social media...Oh wait...That's already happening now isn't it?...Remember Watanen?
Men that are into anime expected me to act like a mindless child, and my ex actually told me I'd looked prettier with star eyes. This is why I will never date someone who are in love with anime women, its always backfired on me, always. They all expect to be dominant. I had my own issues of being very stubborn and distant as well which I have to work on but I just want to meet a guy that doesn't expect some anime girl for a girlfriend in real life
...”I just want to meet a guy that doesn’t expect some anime girl for a girlfriend in real life.” Damn, I’m still waiting for Elon Musk to make anime girls real. But wow that is horrible, but I’ve seen many anime that not only the man is dominant, but the woman.
This is why I keep a distance from anime because of stuff like this. I hate that anime objectifys women and makes them look like some prize to be won. You are the few great people who actually look into this, thank you.
This whole idea is also really prevalent in "romance movies" usually rom-coms, where the female lead isn't interested at all in the male lead but he persistently harasses her until she "gets used" to the harassment. It's even more highlighted with the Fifty Shades series, that portrayals of sexual, emotional and even physical abuse in a series are glossed over if the sex scenes are decent enough to be titillating. Obviously a lot of people see that series as really fucked up, but it sold really well, which tells the industry that's what will make them money.
It's all up to women to decide what they want. Set it in stone. Because females do expect men to be mind readers in half, if not most, of the cases. Females as a whole need to learn to be straightforward. They are the ones set whole "I deserve to be pursued" and "I'm worth so much" precedent. As soon as they learn to stop sending mixed signals, the "keep trying" culture will die out. But as we've REPEATEDLY seen, when men take women for their word, half the time they come out Bitching the classic phrase "where are the real men?"
NineS I don’t see what makes you think women want mind readers, mixed signals do happe but it’s just misinterpretations not the woman’s fault, “im worth so much” is not the same as “ you need to keep hitting on me when I say no”
I'm glad there are people who genuinely love anime, who are also concerned about this. I was watching The Seven Deadly Sins on Netflix, and there are certain aspects of that show I love, but I eventually had to stop watching, as the amount of creepy sexual undertones really got to me... (SPOILER BELOW) Especially when Ban kisses what seemed to be this pre-pubescent girl, that was supposedly a woman in a much younger body or something? It felt like some bizarre fan service, and I was not for it haha. That, and the copious amounts of groping going on in the show also.
You are my spirit animal for saying that I see so many people praise Seven Deadly Sins and write off those offenses as ” cute character quirks” 🤢🤮 and that includes shows like My Hero Academia
completely agree. seven deadly sins’ main character totally turns me off. like, i seriously don’t find the appeal to pervy characters like that. it’s “ o k a y “ to have a pervy character (nothing wrong with a bit of spice) but when their perverted actions towards a female are the butt of every joke (or if it’s like their personality) it gets damn annoying. and hey- it’s not like we hate animes that have fan service, it’s just the ‘sexual harassment’ type of fan service isn’t cute. kill la kill is an example of fan service i like(?) if that makes sense? idk how to describe it, but kill la kill’s fan service doesn’t come off as gross. in fact, the lewdness of the characters is what drives the story. but back to the main topic, animes need to learn that there can be fan service, they just need to cut the creepy gross shit.
@@GollyJolly I love BNHA so much, I just really wish it had no fan service 😭. I literally hate fan service with every bone in my body. I can't watch so many anime because of it.

One time I was walking from my school to the gym and a guy who looked like he was old enough to be my dad came up from behind me ad started talking to me, he noticed that I had Madoka Magica pins on my bag and said it was nice to see that kids today had good taste. I thought it was a bit odd but wanted to be friendly and said thank you and that it was my favorite show at the time. He wouldn't go away after that, he kept on talking about his favorite shows, most of which I'd never heard of, but then he put his arm on my shoulder and began to pat me. No one else was around at the time besides the cars that were passing by and I was getting really freaked out. He asked me how old I was, I told him I was 17. I look and sound younger though, and I'm very short so most people at the time thought I was 14-15. He laughed and said I was a 'cute loli'. That freaked me out, he wouldn't take his arm off of my shoulder even when we were walking and I didn't have the courage to push him away since I was afraid of what he might do. Eventually he had to turn to get to his work and asked if I was going the same way, I was but I told him no and kept walking in the opposite direction. Nothing sexual happened thank god but the experience left me a little rattled, and I'm not sure if he had the intention to do anything to me or if he didn't understand how creepy he was being. The fact that this kind of thing happens a lot in anime though made me stop watching a lot of shows without having my freinds watch through it first and reassure me that there were no scenes where men were to 'touchy' with women, I guess it kinda became a trigger for me.

Let us not gloss over how this political advisor thinks that gays walking in the street causes him as much harm as being groped on the train does to a woman.
To be a little bit more precise: not gays walking in the street, but him seeing a gay couple on the TV is supposedly more harmful than women being groped on the train. Talk about a "snowflake".
@Wandering Oryx He can blame america for that one, Right wing controlled government has an outright plague in it's borders and the republican president outright claims "Look busy and do nothing" because he wants the disease to spread. No wonder Trump is so wildly against vaccination.

@Leopold That sucks, I hope they pay for it, but that is not the reason people in America are against vaccines and the evidence to support that vaccinations should be taken anyways is so overwhelming that the guy who first published the "vaccines cause autism" report had his license revoked and was blacklisted from every area of scientific research on the planet
It's doubly shocking considering that Japan is way more homosexuality tolerant than western cultures. The first gay character in US television was Jack Tripper (from Threes Company), who actually wasn't gay but claimed to be so his landlord would let him rent the unit with two women. Though his character was not actually gay, he was still the first openly gay character on TV, proven by Mr Ruper (the landlord) regularly mocking him for his sexuality. The next gay character I remember was Mr Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries (from Are You Being Served?) who was (practically) openly gay but I was too young to understand anything further than "he liked men" a lot more than he did women. Nobody came out to explicitly call him gay, but in hindsight, it's pretty clear. And that's it. Those are the only two gay characters I remember seeing on TV until Ellen came out with her sitcom in the 90s. Almost twenty years later and we're celebrating any homosexual relationship for its uniqueness in media. But in anime... There's tons of examples of gay characters. Sometimes they're side characters in a relationship (like Sailor Neptune and Uranus) and sometimes they're interested in the protagonist directly.
I honestly don't understand why this has so many dislikes-- this trope of "obnoxious but sympathetic male pesters and harasses his way into a relationship" is so overdone both in anime and in media in general, and I really appreciate that you've taken the time to address the problems with it. I also hate how sexual harassment is so often played for laughs in anime, whether it be lewd comments, groping, ridiculous boob shots, etc. I love Love Live! for example, but Nozomi's unwelcome groping of her "friends" has always rubbed me the wrong way, especially since the other characters always look very visibly uncomfortable. Unwanted touches or remarks aren't acceptable or funny-- they're creepy.
@@ashemabahumat4173 ok dude would you rather have a serial killer in your house or a woman who just beat her fear of commitment? Who's the lesser of two evils here?
The only anime I've watched that doesn't use harassment for comedy is Demon Slayer. More than that, it straight up tells the audience "You need to control yourself around girls". And guess who is the author of the manga? That's right. A woman. Edit: I just remembered another anime(and manga), The Promised Neverland. No one is harassed, everybody just die
I already had to cringe when you showed the scenes of those coaches and others that they claimed to be justified to touch the girls/women, it's so uncomfortable and wrong and they should stop rewarding it
If the guy who was an idiot approach the female in the scene properly, then this would have not been an issue. What he should have done was approach her like an actual human being and ask for her name and introduce himself. He should have gotten to know her first, then state his intention. It's ok to approach a girl, but be honest and make sure you tell her what you want. If she rejects you, then you have two options either give up or do everything in your power to convince her to like you. That means actually becoming a person who you and her appreciates. If the girl is worth it, then change to be a better person. Ask her if there was any reason as to why she rejected you. Sometimes they dont have any, it may because they are not thinking about romantic relationships so they reject the idea at the moment. So if that is the reason just keep trying. This just mean just talk to her. Get to know her better, and golden rule is take two soft no's or one huge hard no. Be generous and honest, and dont scheme of ways to get her attention, just do it.
I really hate the "whataboutism" that shows up on videos like this. Depicting a ridiculous, hyper-visceral display of violence doesn't normalize violence in quite the same way that depicting sexual harassment as a joke does so. While censorship is never an answer, it is our responsibility as consumers to be aware of the ways in which ideas perpetuated by media can contain/normalize behaviors that we know are inappropriate.
"ideas perpetuated by media can contain/normalize behaviors that we know are inappropriate. " If media is indeed normalizing harmful behaviors as you claim above, then why wouldn't censorship be the answer?
@@wanderingwanderer1016 well, free speech is a vehicle through which majorities in a society might exercise their views on what is considered "normal" or "acceptable." You'll be hard pressed to find a society with a contemporary notion of free speech where the media isn't a vehicle for affirming existing values. And while the PR video did lay excellent evidence regarding the diversity of thought in japan, if anime makers perpetuate these stereotypes, it means that they believe their audiences are okay with them. That being said, where free speech often allows for antiquated beliefs to persist long after public discourse has moved on, censorship allows stakeholders to limit public discourse. Free speech doesn't just enable populism, it enhances the synthesis of new ways of thinking. Censorship would stagnate that process of gradual growth. We, as both consumers and makers of media, have a moral responsibility to understand what we consume and how it impacts our world view. Just as you critique the words of a politician.
I strongly agree with this, I'm tired of these tropes and basically giving an excuse for them, and also the people who write this as "someone can't keep their SJW politics reality from fiction" that's just BS and very toxic IMHO.
It is fiction though. And the claim that depiction of harassement in media has substantial effect on real life is absolutely preposterous. There also is the fact that sexual violence is often fetishized by female creators, and aimed at female audiences. Does that mean that those women condone sexual harrasement ? Of course not. The subject is vastly more complicated than that, but I guess slapping a " toxic" on anything that makes you uncomfortable to getthe moral higher ground is preferable to having an actual conversation. Fiction shouldn't be tethered by morals, it's a place of expression, as disgusting as it may be , it's not real and as such either all of it is okay, or none of it is okay. Is positive depiction of murder glorifying actual murder ? does gun violence in anime and movies encourage the use of firearms in real life ? Do Milf incest hentai actually increase the cases of son on mom rape ? somehow I doubt it.
@@dullboyparticle1512 now I agree that slapping toxic my be a little too exterme but the truth that any type of media can have an impact on anyone and their morals weather it's the case of fiction or not, now I'm not saying that media is to blame for this and I apologized if my earlier comment came off like that but the truth is if we can't separate fiction from reality then why do I cry at characters who die despite being fiction? Why do I get angry when characters do something dumb or stupid? why do I feel shocked when a character does something that is wrong but in their case is right? Sometimes the fiction we see is close to the reality that we live in.
It is fiction and that statement isn't toxic. It's the truth. A lot of people like you seem to want Japan to conform to the rest of the political agenda that the West is going through, and while some changes do need to be made, at the end of the day, it's just fiction. Let people write and make what they want to make. Stop trying to censor people.
It's always bothered me how anime protagonists are sometimes the hugest perverts but it's fine because they're nice and heroic and strong, or whatever. And that's a super prevelant trope in anime
Yep, the Nice Guy(tm) who can get away with pretty much anything. That in itself is a dangerous message and were you end up with entitlement, where guys believe they are OWED returned female attention just for existing because "Well I mean, I told her she was cute, so that means she has to like me right?"
Its because modern anime has been on a huge fucking downward spiral toward this shit, blatant pandering and wish fufilment for otaku, and nobody ever seems to complain.

They're common, so I think you either haven't seen as many as you say, or you just don't notice it because it's so common.
@@drlolXD it's also not a feminist thing? Or a political thing? Like, have you looked at the sexual assault rates in Japan? Maybe not, but I do, because my family is Japanese, and I know for a fact their media perpetuates it. Also sexual assault isn't a left wing or a right wing thing, and if you think that, then you're either ignorant, or apathetic to the issue, in which case, you shouldn't be speaking on it at all.
I think you might be misinterpreting the point. It's not that anime's tendency of portraying sexual assault is the thing that causes sexual assault in general. The point is that it is one of innumerable factors that lead people to misunderstand the nature of sexual harassment and assault. We should at least discuss how those portrayals (across pretty much all media mind you, but we're here to talk about anime) frame harassment/assault as a funny/romantic thing and how the sheer amount of times these tropes show up wind up normalizing harmful behavior. It doesn't solve the entirety of the problem, but we can't get anywhere unless we point this stuff out, criticize it, and demand better.
It's honestly so good and refreshing to see someone actually talk about this. I love watching anime, but the harassment and hyper sexualisation is absolutely terrible, and it's difficult to even find anime that doesn't drag in stuff like that. And it's especially sad when people try to defend anime for being like that.
I don't think anime has a fan service problem. Anime just needs more fan service for female fans and not for male fans only and all good. Trying to repress sexulity never ends well. We should embrace it.
''The problem is anime talking about how sexual assault is okay.'' Except that no anime does that (with some rare exceptions like there are with any media). Dragon pilot, at least, certainly did not make such an argument and a youtuber's interpretation of some out of context scenes certainly is not enough to demonstrate such a claim, let alone the claim that this is a common problem with a lot of anime.
Fanservice - specifically, perv pandering - is fine, but can we go back to the days when anime women looked like _women?_ I’m not talking about ‘real women have T/A’ or whatever, but the pubescent bone proportions of modern anime girls - largely in series where they’re explicitly in junior/high school. Faye Valentine and Michiko Malandro and less blatant, more generally pretty examples like Misato Katsuragi are fine - encouraged, even! Let’s just be considerate about it. Let’s give _grown_ characters _positive, nuanced_ sexual existences instead of dumbed-down, unconsciously-abusive and vaguely pedophilic ones. Let’s write about how interesting it can be for people to get involved with each other! Also, seriously, when a character attends elementary school in canon, stands roughly 3 feet tall in-universe, and is referred to as a loli and lusted after...I’m not really buying the distinction. I know _a_ real-life 26 year old loli, but you can still tell she’s not a child. She’s just petite.
First of all, one very specific character from one very specific anime doesn't prove a problem with ''anime'' as a whole, it's anecdotal at best. It being a cheap joke or a trope doesn't make it a problem, it just makes it bad writing. Nothing more, nothing less. Secondly, I've watched countless shows like many here. Not one of them had anything good to say about sexual harassment. Mind you, there is a difference between writing something with sexual harassment in it and something that supports it. Without a clear argument made one way or another, you cannot legitimately argue that a show promotes it or denigrates it by default and that's ok, not every show has to have a statement about virtue in it. If something exists, showing it is something you can do. You don't have to make a definitive statement about bank robbery being bad to show such a thing in a story, why would it be different with sexual harassment? Finally, grabbing someone's shoulder or calling that person by their name is not sexual assault. Asking someone out multiple times or teasing them isn't either. This is what Zaito did in the anime discussed here. Sure, it's played in a way to make people think of that character as somewhat perverted, pushy and dumb, but in no way was this even close to sexual harassment or assault. Calling it as such is incredibly out of context. The other scenes are pretty much irrelevant scenes with a more broad argument distorted out of them with the help of interpretation and ''quotes''. Seriously, have you seen this anime?
I've always found it very awkward and uncomfortable when seeing these scenes as a girl. Anime like Naruto, Hero's Academia, and the Seven Deadly Sins tends to use this as an odd form of 'comedy' far too much. Like beating an already dead and mutilated horse. A lot of viewers had been conditioned to find it okay in a way, that a character being extremely hentai to other female characters will always be inherently funny, that the more you pursue and try to advance a girl, the better chance you have with her. That, you know, peeking through a girl's window while she's changing is just a very normal and healthy behavior of a young boy. Heck, let's be even more blunt for a second. A literal Japanese school girl's uniform and their swimsuit has been used as a sexual prop for the longest time. It is what it is. But, with such a large amount of real life events coming out about top position people being accused of sexual harassment, you can't help but feel far too aware of the connections and how real this issue is. I used to think so arrogantly that with all the people supporting women and male victims of sexual harassment, that there's no way it's a common thing to happen. Wrong! So terribly wrong. Go outside and pick a part time job even, and you'll soon notice it's a very DEEP ROOTED ISSUE. Ask your female coworkers, they'll have plenty of stories to tell.
I dont think what jiraiya sensei do is supposed to be funny 💀,ik hes a pervert and all,but its not funny when he do the pervert things like peeking girls...
i think this is why i liked neon genesis evangelion so much. i was uncomfortable with certain shots of the girl characters because it was just painful to watch, but when i learned the creator was actually criticizing how women in anime are typically portrayed, i fell in love with it
Seven deadly sins is a perfect example. We don’t KNOW that the anime justifies his actions like groping her while she sleeps and they just met tf? I felt completely uncomfortable and she just took it, don’t regret dropping that shit after a couple of episodes. People who justify this really don’t know how much influence anime has. THINK about it, men groping women in trains irl, school girls getting harassed irl because it’s a fetish in anime, the girls will eventually like you if you try hard enough mentality, girl falls and you see her panties in anime. Actually THINK and acknowledge how normalized this has become and how it influences people so NO, it’s not just a drawing 🙄. It occurs in many anime, not just hentai or ecchi which would’ve at least helped people avoid it if they wanted to.
Honestly I still like Seven Deadly Sins but I can’t blame anyone if they can’t watch it, he literally gripes her in every episode I think.......it’s pretty much a never ending gag and I have no idea why they felt they needed to make him THAT perverted.
I also think its important to note this stuff is by no means exclusive to anime. Like I can think of 5 mainstream American shows off the bat that have very similar tropes and mistakes to just what you were talking about here. Which I think just hurts the "its a different culture" argument even more when you consider our media perpetuates the same harmful tropes
Leopold I’m not sure if you mean that sexual assault specifically is glorified in these shows, or if these shows just generally contain characters who are glorified for doing reprehensible things. I’ve admittedly only seen one of the shows on this list, but I don’t recall any point in Breaking Bad where sexual assault is present, and I wouldn’t say anything the characters do is glorified (though to be fair I haven’t finished the show, so maybe I haven’t gotten to the part you are referring to). The point of breaking bad is that most of the characters are bad people, and they do bad things. You’re supposed to look at Walter White and hate what he’s become, but also sympathize with him because you know he had originally good intentions. Same with a lot of gangster movies like Goodfellas or The Godfather, where the characters are obviously bad people doing bad things, but the audience is invested in their story and how they got to where they are (I know we’re talking about television specifically but I think it’s still relevant to mention). Based on the little I’ve seen from Family Guy, I’m sure you’re absolutely right about that. Also, to clarify, I’m absolutely not trying to suggest that American television has better morals or teaches better themes than Japanese television. A lot of movies and TV shows definitely do glorify terrible things like murder, drugs, etc. I’m just unaware of many instances in American television of the specific type of justification of sexual assault being talked about here.
There's an abundance of these tropes and shit in anime though it's not as common in America and the west because over all sexual assault is seen as disgusting (which I personally agree with of course)
@@absolstoryoffiction6615 so you're just going to write this issue off with a joke then? Also, who said that talking about one issue means ignoring other issues within anime? If we critique something, it's because we want to see it improve. Why get so defensive about something you like just because someone points out flaws and says"Hey this could be a bit better if we changed this and that." ?
"Sexism is bad! Groping women on trains is bad! Molesting coworkers is bad! Lookit me, aren't I edgy?" Try posting a video agreeing with that minister, or even defending him against any single point of exaggerated or unjustified criticism. "Brave," my left foot.
@@julianakelrune7777 it's a meme being used in the wrong context. It's not controversial or brave to be against sexual assault and harassment. That's the default ffs.
I took Modern Japan in College and own a book called "Uneasy Warroirs" by Sabine Fruhstuck on just the subject of women and sexism in the JSDF. Would be a good resource to know more.
Thank you. Thank you for using your platform to talk about this. It means a lot to people like me, who are tired of fellow otaku waving away serious issues without even thinking about it. It's so pervasive, I sometimes thought I was crazy for even thinking any of it was wrong, even though the evidence is overwhelming. Thank you.
@@Jepze158 but it still open up to more discussion rather than just be silence and indulge in this normalized culture, thinking its not happening to me and my family why should i care
THANK YOU! I can hardly watch anime nowadays because of this shit. Woman, man, or anything else, if you've been affected by sexual assault, this can make anime hard to watch. Is it so much to ask that I can enjoy a good piece of animation without seeing characters I've grown to love being harassed, and the show acting like it's business as usual?
As a lesbian, no amount of annoying and incessant harassment will make me like some random man. Straight women will not fall for it either, you will get cops at your door.
I'm glad that this is being covered by someone. I know this video is kinda old but it's still a problem in anime of 2021. Fiction affects reality and shows that show it's "okay to harass women" makes viewers think it may be okay in reality. And honestly it's so common in anime that I've been desensitized to it! I'm def going to be more aware of it from now on.
THANK YOU for pointing out that the belief that Japan doesn't care about feminist issues is part of the gross Orientalist view of Asian (perhaps especially Japanese) women as inherently submissive to male desires, regardless of what form those desires take, or what their source is. This attitude is disgusting and needs to be called out for what it is. It may be true that feminism is perhaps less prevalent in Japan, but it absolutely exists, and I don't believe you need feminism in a culture for its women to dislike being harassed and assaulted and demand that society change to prevent such crimes. Human beings just generally don't like being harassed and assaulted, and basically claiming that Japanese women are okay with that shit is dehumanizing.
This weird fantasy that Asian women are like sex puppet with no sense of free will is held largely by greasy 4chan nerds who think Japanese women want to be their waifu-slave IRL and use them as a model for how the "corrupted" women of the west should properly act. Nothing but nasty willful delusions and feminism is seen as an attack on their fantasy.

@@absolstoryoffiction6615 Yo basically what it means is portraying sexual harassment in a positive light is bad you can use it as a story telling device if it's taken seriously but usually it's not and that's the problem
I completely agree. Sexual harassment and even assault are far too common in anime, and to add my own perspective to the pile, even moreso in shows with LGBT themes. There are very few wlw anime without some degree of harassment or assault, and even fewer so for mlm. It’s made finding good LGBT stories nearly impossible in anime because so many that seem good end up having people who we’re supposed to like pressuring people into sex. Of course, this is almost an entire topic on its own, but I felt like it was worth pointing out.
Caio Coelho i uh didnt say anime as a whole? i said anime about lgbt people. obviously anime as a whole isnt all assault all the time, though it is fairly common even outside of lgbt anime
Yeah, whenever I read bl I can literally toss a coin to determine whether it will be a “rape to love” plotline. After a while you just get desensitized, its really disturbing
Yupyupyup. Everytime I consider getting back into yaoi I'm reminded how many of the stories are literally straight up rape, and then they play it off like it's cute☹️
@@gideonroos1188 Indeed. But a lot of people from both sides keep throwing insults at each other while being smug on their "moral high ground." They have no intention of making a compromise after engaging in a civil discussion. They just want to antagonize people who don't agree with their views and debunk their narrative.
To be honest yeah, anime kind of reflects beliefs, expectations and issues in our (or at least japanese's society), not the other way around. I think it's stupid to try to wage war against anime, leave the medium (which should be a free platform for expression, even if garbage is created) alone, and if you hate what goes in it that much, then you should try to do something about the japanese society instead. If the mentalities change there, it will likely have an impact on anime aswell. I fully agree that japan has some issues on a societal level, but the premise of this video where anime should be our main concern is simply plain silly to me.
All the comments here I hope make it known that this POV is very welcome on YT. I'm sorry I keep commenting, I just found you and I'm binging your channel and I LOVE you. Your videos are really thought provoking.
As a woman, it is incredibly scary when a guy doesn't take no for an answer. In my freshman year, a guy in my band caught me completely alone after school and asked me out. I said no and he kept pushing it and getting closer to me. Eventually he reached out and grabbed my shoulder and I leaped back and yelled "Don't touch me!" to draw attention of people nearby and I practically ran out of there in tears. I couldn't stop shaking all day and I still get shaky thinking about it. Since that moment, I walked around school always with fear because I was afraid he would approach me again and possibly do something worse, or of other guys doing the same thing. He never got that close again, I did everything I could so thay wouldn't happen, but he still tried to "flirt" with me and I just felt scared. It just baffles me to this day, did he really think he was being... romantic? It makes me sick to my stomach that this assault is somehow considered how you find a date, that it's normal. You're a really good person for making this video, I'm relieved and grateful to know that not all men think this way. It's a topic I've literally never seen get addressed in the anime community but I think really needs some serious attention. But at the same time, this also makes me sad because I shouldn't HAVE to be grateful for someone condemning this behavior, it should be common decency, but it isn't.
Thank you so much for using your platform to talk about this. No one takes women seriously when we describe how terrifying situations like the one described at 3:59 are. People assume that just because something doesn't meet the legal requirements of sexual harassment/assault, it's okay, when the reality is far from that.
Tetrology Damn dude can you even listen or read? The video is about how showing sexual harassment in the way most anime do makes it so that men think it’s okay to harass women. Getting rid of these obvious sexual harassment examples that happen to also *reward the assaulter* will help to decrease people from thinking sexual harassment is okay. Also Beatrice H. literally is saying how *real people* think it’s okay to harass women and also that *those situations* we can get into from harassers IRL is *fucking scary* But people don’t seem to understand that we don’t always have power of the situation! Sometimes there’s another man with the harasser. Maybe there’s no one around to call for help. Maybe the man who is harassing us could possibly be set off and we are* fearing for our lives* b/c guess what? Men can fucking hurt women for not accepting their harassment/flirting I wouldn’t have typed so much if it wasn’t for the fact that people like you think fiction does not equal reality and that this shit is okay to show with rewards to the harasser b/c ‘Oh it’s just a cartoon/anime/show/etc.! It doesn’t mean anything! It’s not like real people are going to keep doing this stuff!!’ b/c let me tell you, buddy, it’s still a problem and the way sexual harassment is usually shown/treated in media, it’s gonna stay a thing for a long-ass time.
@@TetrologyGamingBattlefield I'll paste a comment I've made a few times: in my profession, we have something called the Law and Order effect and the CSI effect, named so because these shows affect jurors' expectations of forensic evidence and such, and prosecutors have to take this into consideration when they present cases and evidence in court. Jaws irreparably changed people's attitudes about sharks, look up "the Jaws effect" if you don't believe me. Movies, tv, ect do in fact influence public opinions to some degree. It's not linear, like violence in video games directly leads to violence in real life, but to say it doesn't happen at all is disingenuous.
The flaw with this sort of thinking is that people create based on a known quantity. There's a lot of sexual assault in anime because there is a lot of it in Japan. Art imitates life, not the other way around.
I know this is late, but thank for you for this video. This is one of the largest problems in anime. I've seen countless male anime fans defend over sexualization, pedophilia, sexual harassment, and homophobia in anime, I've grown sick and tired of it. Was so refreshing to see this! And yes, anime DOES encourage these types of behaviors in real life, so no, it's not just a "drawing".
I have just the right show for you, little snowflake: My little pony. Watch it. It will make you feel better about yourself. Watch anime or other shows after you have learnt to differentiate between reality and fiction
You just watch a movie, a mainstream episode, or, something, then a certain scene that you complain instead of "nah, that's trash" against the other party ends up in a waste of time. This is why communities had double standards.
I’ve been wanting to make a video on this kind of stuff for a while now. I see sexual harassment in anime all the time, and it’s dealt with terribly. Sure you can display it in anime, but most anime glorifies it or just gives it a slight slap on the wrist.
A friend of mine has been liveblogging their watch of MHA and they've been really frustrated by the series' tacit acceptance of Mineta's behavior and the constant sexualization of the girls against their will as funny and okay. What's really depressing is that I'm just so used to this shit that I've been writing it off and falling into the shikata ga nai mindset of the characters: it can't be helped, shit's just like this. But, it can be helped, dammit!
MHA isn't fair to criticize because Mineta is disliked by everyone, his actions are never once seen as okay. And there's hardly any sexualization, when there is the villainous girl being sexualized clearly doesn't mind, or it's the invisible girl
@@Ryda124 dude. you. you do realize that these characters are written not to mind those Things by a grown ass man that feels like he has to sexualize teenage girls. right?
I think that romantic anime in general suffers from sexual harassment anime charater tropes. I get that it's fiction and therefore anything is possible, but the prevalence and ubiquity of the tropes is the concerning point. It's normalizing the sexual misconduct of both genders/sexes. I can't tell you how often I am turned off by the misconduct of characters pining over their crushes. Off-topic complaint: Why is it so rare for anime and media in general to portray a loving couple from the beginning THROUGH most of their life (teens through 30s and beyond). Like why do soo many stop when the two people become an item? I want to see them grow closer together THROUGH the struggles in life. Ah well, life in the minority I guess.
6:23 The fact that people ignore this about Japan says a lot and claims that people complaining about sexual harassment in anime or manga is from "woke" or "SJWs." I think your video is important to this day, thank you for creating.
Everyone acknowledges it. We just dont talk about it publicly, mostly because there's no point. It's Japanese culture and we can't change it from the outside.
@@BurnCorpoStuff You didn't seem to have watched the whole video. The fact is that this attitude is no different in non-Japanese culture than in Japan makes this a thing that actually should be discussed, not dismissed as "we can't directly change it so we should just keep it quiet." If this seems confrontational, I apologise, but the way you wrote your comment seemed a tad bit dismissive of this.
Usually the creeper trope is played as pathetic and the butt of a joke, getting rejected or physically beaten for their behavior, as we are expected to cheer on their suffering

This video was amazing man. Keep it up. This is an actual problem, and I am glad you addressed it. It's one of the main reasons that I ended up hating Seven Deadly Sins when I finally watched it because of the hype. That main blonde character, the leader of the 7 sins, was sexually harassing the main character the entire series, when she was clearly uncomfortable. It gave me a bad taste in my mouth that that kind of behavior was rewarded in that series. So many anime are like that, even some from this season. The problem is, if you criticize this kind of drama, the community reacts very negatively. It's sad.
I started to watch it, but the second that short blonde guy started fondling uncouncious person breasts I turned it off - I don't think someone who wrote such scene in such way can tell me a story I would bother to watch.
i- i think I love you? Also,,,wtf why is there over 1K dislikes; this video is literally just talking about common sense. some people really are just crackheads
Goddamn, thank you so much for this video! Sexual harassment is a HUGE problem in anime and I’m glad you outlined how it plays out so well. I hate it when people try to justify it, saying shit like “it’s just the culture” when it’s so clearly an issue that needs to be addressed. I think you approached this very well, and the ending line was savage lmao
While I agree that A LOT of anime try to dismiss sexual harassment/assault like it's a joke is a problem, Hisone to Maso-tan is not one of them. In the case of the relationship you analyzed. Yes Yutaka does start pursuing Eru like she is less than a human being, and she does reject him for it and he doesn't get the hint, and yes, Eru does eventually warm up to and fall in love with him but not because he keeps treating her like he did when they first met. Over the course of the show Yutaka grows as a person, realizes the Eru isn't just a slab of meat he can use at his leisure and actually starts to respect women as people in general. Remember the flirty high school girls? He rejected their advances and called the other men out for flirting with them. His attempts to win Eru's affections started to become more and more genuine until we finally get a scene where he verbally confirms that he knows what a respectable person Eru is and that (essentially), he was wrong in how he treated her. And Eru saw these changes. She was either just out of view of Yutaka and overheard some of his conversations or witnessed behavioral changes and started to open up to him more. And THEN there's the biggest part of their romantic development that you left out entirely. In a (misguided) attempt to support Eru's dream of becoming a fighter pilot, Yutaka sacrifices his shot at having an honest relationship with Eru because he was told that she had fallen in love with him and would no longer be able to be a D-pilot. He then lies to her and pretends like he was just after her body again and she responds by (for lack of a better term because they weren't even dating) breaking it off with him and 'swearing off men' or something. It's not until after their big mission that she learns what he did for her that she approaches him to try to start a relationship again. Now I'll admit that, as a man, I cannot understand all the shit women have to put up with but I think this show (at the very least) handled Eru and Yutaka's relationship wonderfully. Eru didn't come around to Yutaka because he was aggressively pursuing her like he was conditioning an animal but because he genuinely changed and treated her like an equal. So I can't agree with the statement that this particular show enforces some sort of idea that you can use sexual harassment/assault as a means to win the affection of a women because it proved the opposite.
And thats exact reason why I believe this video was disliked so much. There were points to be made but he hanged way too much on the aspect ''oh, he hit on her way too hard and was kinda douchy, sexual harrasment'' sorry but that doesn't constitute as a sexual harrasment. Douche move? Yes. Harrasment (especially sexual one) would be if he was pushing himself onto her and begging her to suck his dick/have sex/groped, which again, Yutaka never fucking did. Like you said, Yutaka is rewarded because he decided to change his approach to Eru, not because he was same douchbag towards her all to the end (and heaven forbid characters in anime decide to change for better). He was more of a character than just being a douchebag, just like Eru was more of her character that was stubborn and lost into her percieved dream of being a fighter jet pilot. OP has good message and I agree with second aspect (with the guy that designed suits for them, he did rub me the wrong way) however you can't pick characters and their relationship and discet them in that way while completely glossing over their character growth and stating faleshood at the end that shitty behaviour is rewarded, when it wasn't.
@@xbabe1107 How to strawman 101. He is objectively rewarded for his bad behaviour. The reason YOU dont see that as bad behaviour is because you are so used to anime doing this, you no longer understand human relationships
In my comment I tried to say why I disagree with his opinion on these specific characters mentioned in above video (and basically tried to point out he picked WRONG show to deliver his point), and you brought your conclusion about me in a single line comment. I wonder who's strawmaning here. :)
I'm late to seeing this, but, thank you for speaking on this. I'm so sick of seeing sexual harassment being seen as some gag, fanserivce, or portrayed positively in anime. People say it's just fiction, but fiction CAN affect reality and warp the way people think (see: propaganda cartoons). Media is effective with shaping the brain, and it baffles me that so many people still go around claiming it's "just a cartoon". It infuriates me that us ladies are constantly just unsafe in this world, and that so many men just laugh it off or blame us when THEY act on their urges (that they can control). Maybe if more men watched less 1 minute porn videos and did more coloring they'd be less deviant. Just an idea.
When I saw the title on my suggested videos I was a bit weary, considering how anime fans commonly talk about this. Glad to hear a really well-put response on the issue.
Sorry, but I have to call you out on this. First of all, nothing about that line made it seem like it was okay. Me as well, when I heard it, made me instantly dislike that character, just like Hoshino ended up doing. Him thinking like that, or saying that, was a clear character flaw. It's supposed to make you think of him like a douchebag. Now, I don't remember if the overly aggressive and flirty side of him ended up being just a facade he put on because he thought it was cool, or something, or if that was his genuine self, but he did undergo a pretty big change. The video creator made it sound like Hoshino fell in love with him because of how he was acting, when in actuality, it was only when he stopped acting that way and started presenting himself as a better person, that things actually started happening. If anything, the message that I got from it was the complete opposite from what you did. I'm not sure why that is, but regardless... I have another problem with what you said. You're assuming that the writer is interjecting their own ideology into their work as some kind of soap box. Having a sexist character in your show does not mean you're promoting those ideas. Even if they get what they want in the end. Especially not in this case, considering that not only were his sexist actions never justified, but he didn't actually get justification to begin with until he dropped that kind of act.
That's always been the crutch with this kind of critical theory, it goes out of its way to interpret everything as a form of moral messaging even when it clearly was not intended as such, and runs with an interpretation as objectively true and something every viewer must similarly walk away with. In this lens, anything that does not very obviously and explicitly push positive behaviors and punish bad ones at all points becomes problematic, and shouldn't ethically exist.
did yall even watch the video? BECAUSE this line was there and it wasn't formally repudiated it BECOMES an endorsement of that behavior. This is obvious when the relationship continually is put under a positive light
This video is a year old, but the topic of the video is still an issue. It's so strange how those "cute" tropes like accidental groping and kisses are portrayed the way they are, because that stuff is still legitimately uncomfortable. This is not an SJW issue, this is an issue that needs to be addressed before it becomes more normalized than it already is. The fact that some people get off on "accidentally" groping and violating a woman is pretty fucking disgusting, and to see some people have their fantasies realized in such a large form of media, this is a problem that can't be brushed off. No matter how much people try to argue that "it's just fiction," if someone enjoys seeing a woman, fictional or not, getting harassed regardless of intention, then that's already a problem in of itself. Plus, the type of anime that these tropes appear in most often are anime that have a male lead that is meant for the (generally male) viewer to project themselves onto. I don't think I need to explain how that cycles back to the "fiction vs. reality" statement. It's appalling to see how this video is one of the only videos I can find on this topic, especially considering how many large anime RUclipsrs are on this site.
Thankyou, I love animes, but this is a problem. It always made me felt uncomfortable, especially if they make it for the sake of "comedy". When I pointed it out, some people always told me I'm just too sensitive, taking it seriously, or even bringing up my personal belief. But, it _is_ a problem, imo. And I'm really glad a lot of people felt the same.
The fact that this is still relevant 2 years later. The Anime fire force needs this the most. It's a really good anime, has a great storyline and pacing but the 1 problem have with it is a certain character the promotes sexual harassment or as sultry is funny or comedic. Tamaki is the worst character and I just can't stand her. The writers make her go with the flow and continue to make her wear revealing clothes were as a real life person would have put on more clothes if the situations that happened to her happened that often. Everytime she pops on screen they do the same gag and it's gross everytime. They gave her the smallest bit of development but it was her just becoming fine or used to her sexual harassment/assult and just never her getting mad or gettung depressed that she can't go 1 day without harassment it's just her coming to terms and it becoming her thing. She has a cool ability and could be really useful but the writers subject her to nothing comedic sexual relief and that's one of (in my opinion) it's biggest flaws.
I'm pretty sure the intent of the show's creator wasn't to portray sexual harrasment as sympathetic. The intention was to portray that guy as someone who deep down wasn't so gross, most of the moments where the two characters connected was when they were competing and he wasn't actively harrasing her. However I feel that the delivery was clumsy, and I have to agree with you that it ends up congratulating sexual harrassmente and implicitely supporting it.
I agree. Zaito is probably meant to be a character who acts like a creep but is actually a good guy (with his ploy to destroy Hoshino's feelings being based on going back to that creep persona and turning it up to 11 in his friends with benefits proposal, when what he really wanted was a serious relationship with her serving as the culmination of that arc), but the actual delivery was fumbled.
There's a difference between being pushy and sexually harassing someone though. You're not sexually harassing someone just by trying to get a date more than once or teasing them. Also, grabbing someone's shoulder is not sexual assault. In no way, shape or form did this show congratulate sexual harassment. One must have an incredibly large definition of sexual harassment to even consider that this show did.
It depends on the context. Let's say someone ask another on a date, the other person says no and then over time a relationship develops between the two for whatever reason. Asking another time isn't harassment in this context if person A now has reasons to think person B might be into it. The problem with making such blanket statements is that it ignores the fact that reality is much more complicated than something you can just slap general statements to like : ''sexual harassment is repeatedly asking someone on a date when they've already told you no''. What's funny here though is that I described pretty much what happened in Hisone to Masotan with this hypothetical scenario.
Also when it goes into men being mcs in these types of animes, they're punched for no reason and literally chased like meat, like bro, women not gonna do that, no matter how hot you are and anime mcs like that are never even special

The show's that you seemingly feel offended by are probably those catered towards male audiences. I never understood people who criticize some shows all the while shows that might cater to their interests and desires are right around the corner. Being against sexual harassment doesn't make you an SJW, it makes you a decent human being.
Stuart Cluff Imagine seriously thinking that? "You disagree with me? SJW." "You care whether people and children get hurt or not? SJW."
"SJW" is a word that has become meaningless through constant misapplication, which is sad because people who meet the actual meaning of one (someone who uses a poorly developed and extremist view of social justice to act like a twat) do still exist and need to be called out.
In that case... We must ban violent video games. No? Ha ha ha ha. Oh... Your irony is amusing.

People who defend lolicon and disregard this make me sick.
frrrrrrr
So, violent video games cause violence in real life
@@progunjack5556 No because the nature of video games as a medium is completely different than anime.
Remember Shoujo Tsubaki?

This whole idea is also really prevalent in "romance movies" usually rom-coms, where the female lead isn't interested at all in the male lead but he persistently harasses her until she "gets used" to the harassment. It's even more highlighted with the Fifty Shades series, that portrayals of sexual, emotional and even physical abuse in a series are glossed over if the sex scenes are decent enough to be titillating. Obviously a lot of people see that series as really fucked up, but it sold really well, which tells the industry that's what will make them money.
That trope occurs in all media not just anime.

By "on videos like this," I meant in the comments.
"ideas perpetuated by media can contain/normalize behaviors that we know are inappropriate.
"
If media is indeed normalizing harmful behaviors as you claim above, then why wouldn't censorship be the answer?
Not entirely true. Video games don't glani isse the issue.

These aren't even obscure anime.

Well... good luck driving without your glasses...
Yes I understand it's a metaphoric if not slightly hyperbole.
It's honestly so good and refreshing to see someone actually talk about this. I love watching anime, but the harassment and hyper sexualisation is absolutely terrible, and it's difficult to even find anime that doesn't drag in stuff like that. And it's especially sad when people try to defend anime for being like that.
And a sexualisation of childs problem, and fanservice problem and.....anime was a mistake...and so was I.
Don't dare to criticize child sexualization in anime, Digipedo fans will say "it's just paper" and come after you!
I don't think anime has a fan service problem. Anime just needs more fan service for female fans and not for male fans only and all good. Trying to repress sexulity never ends well. We should embrace it.
''The problem is anime talking about how sexual assault is okay.''
Except that no anime does that (with some rare exceptions like there are with any media).

Thank you so much for using your platform to talk about this. No one takes women seriously when we describe how terrifying situations like the one described at 3:59 are. People assume that just because something doesn't meet the legal requirements of sexual harassment/assault, it's okay, when the reality is far from that.
You want to PROSECUTE fictional characters lmfao
Tetrology Sure, if you don't actually read what op wrote you might get that conclusion
Also Beatrice H. literally is saying how *real people* think it’s okay to harass women and also that *those situations* we can get into from harassers IRL is *fucking scary*
But people don’t seem to understand that we don’t always have power of the situation! Sometimes there’s another man with the harasser. Maybe there’s no one around to call for help. Maybe the man who is harassing us could possibly be set off and we are* fearing for our lives* b/c guess what? Men can fucking hurt women for not accepting their harassment/flirting
I wouldn’t have typed so much if it wasn’t for the fact that people like you think fiction does not equal reality and that this shit is okay to show with rewards to the harasser b/c ‘Oh it’s just a cartoon/anime/show/etc.! It doesn’t mean anything! It’s not like real people are going to keep doing this stuff!!’ b/c let me tell you, buddy, it’s still a problem and the way sexual harassment is usually shown/treated in media, it’s gonna stay a thing for a long-ass time.
Stabbun “games cause violence in real life” is what this argument is like. Grow up it’s FICTION.
I agree, maybe the reason it exists in so many anime is because it is a problem in japan?
like the only reason i ever heard about selling/stealing/sniffing panties, is from anime. maybe a lot of dudes there just does those stupid stuff?

I know this is late, but thank for you for this video. This is one of the largest problems in anime. I've seen countless male anime fans defend over sexualization, pedophilia, sexual harassment, and homophobia in anime, I've grown sick and tired of it. Was so refreshing to see this! And yes, anime DOES encourage these types of behaviors in real life, so no, it's not just a "drawing".

Sure you can display it in anime, but most anime glorifies it or just gives it a slight slap on the wrist.
that a really good point
Name some anime that does this
Lies they don't support it
A friend of mine has been liveblogging their watch of MHA and they've been really frustrated by the series' tacit acceptance of Mineta's behavior and the constant sexualization of the girls against their will as funny and okay. What's really depressing is that I'm just so used to this shit that I've been writing it off and falling into the shikata ga nai mindset of the characters: it can't be helped, shit's just like this. But, it can be helped, dammit!
At least mineta gets rejected by EVERY woman
Mineta is based and you and your friend are losers
MHA isn't fair to criticize because Mineta is disliked by everyone, his actions are never once seen as okay. And there's hardly any sexualization, when there is the villainous girl being sexualized clearly doesn't mind, or it's the invisible girl
But u literally can not do anything. Other than stop watching anime

The fact is that this attitude is no different in non-Japanese culture than in Japan makes this a thing that actually should be discussed, not dismissed as "we can't directly change it so we should just keep it quiet."

This video was amazing man. Keep it up. This is an actual problem, and I am glad you addressed it. It's one of the main reasons that I
ended up hating Seven Deadly Sins when I finally watched it because of the hype. That main blonde character, the leader of the 7 sins,
was sexually harassing the main character the entire series, when she was clearly uncomfortable. It gave me a bad taste in my mouth
that that kind of behavior was rewarded in that series. So many anime are like that, even some from this season. The problem is, if you
criticize this kind of drama, the community reacts very negatively. It's sad.
I started to watch it, but the second that short blonde guy started fondling uncouncious person breasts I turned it off - I don't think someone who wrote such scene in such way can tell me a story I would bother to watch.

Finally someone broke it down correctly.
Dragon ball?

The “break the prideful woman” line made me hate that character so much. I loved the other characters tho
@@Citizenflaba On the contrary, I don't think you read my post. Either that, or you didn't actually watch the anime.
@@wanderingoryx3710 What are you even doing here then? lol
Hi what should we do to stop it?
Cuz anime fans don't care
Thankyou, I love animes, but this is a problem. It always made me felt uncomfortable, especially if they make it for the sake of "comedy".
When I pointed it out, some people always told me I'm just too sensitive, taking it seriously, or even bringing up my personal belief. But, it _is_ a problem, imo. And I'm really glad a lot of people felt the same.

@@kenrichgumanid9235 retarded response
Subbed. Never have seen that show, but this general issue has been bugging me for a long time.
I'm pretty sure the intent of the show's creator wasn't to portray sexual harrasment as sympathetic. The intention was to portray that guy as someone who deep down wasn't so gross, most of the moments where the two characters connected was when they were competing and he wasn't actively harrasing her. However I feel that the delivery was clumsy, and I have to agree with you that it ends up congratulating sexual harrassmente and implicitely supporting it.
if you act that way towards someone you are that gross deep down
@@Not.a.bird.Person It actually is harassment to repeatedly ask someone on a date when they've already told you no.
