On my stainless steel pans, I can. They're very good quality, haven't rusted yet in 7 years. In fact to scrub them I have to use a metal scrubber. Now on my nonstick pans I will have a fit. Lol. No metal on non stick.

If I use a fork to mash potatoes, instead of the potato masher, I make sure not to scrape the sides or bottom. She seems REALLY uptight, even the way she holds her mouth. My husband is just like this wife but it is definitely just with me (and anyone in my family) that he acts this way. I get yelled at for not fussing over everything his sister cooks and how she cooks it when a) she is cooking it wrote and b) I either don’t eat or can’t eat what she is cooking.
Yes, they all find it extremely insulting when I decline foods I am allergic too or that make me sick (I have a chronic illness).

I use metal in my stainless steel pans all the time. Actually the only way to scub them clean is to use metal on metal. They never rust. Now nonstick, that's a no go. She is living in a world all by herself.
It's only non stick pans that you have to be careful of
