It’s actually not that unique especially if you’ve seen many many horror films lol. Not to sound like a dbag…just being honest. The directing is exceptional but the story is so tired and dismal. I like how Jenna Ortega goes from praising A24 movies in scream and almost died for it to actually staring in an A24 movie. I’m actually happy to hear the movie takes it’s time to build the suspense.
The movie felt like the old Italian Giallo art-horror films, the likes of the great Dario Argento; with a throwback to what made the early days of American slashers so great! This is my takeaway from the film.
Saw the movie today and it was a blast! The whole theater was laughing, going “oh!” at the kills, and was generally into it. Some people even clapped at the end. Lol
It was like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mixed with "The Visit" mixed with a effed up take of "Lolita"- ohmygod it was so good!!! Instead of family and cannibalism they used sex and love- it was so brilliant, so clever, so creepy without being gory, ironic and deep and actually a little romantic lol, I freaking LOVED it😂🤷♀️👍👍 (sidenote- get granny a vibrator IMMEDIATELY)
I'm extremely hyped for this film. I'm a big fan of Ti West, especially his film House Of The Devil which is a fantastic slow burn creepy and atmospheric horror film.
Prior to *_'Hereditary'_* , I remember *_'The House of The Devil'_* being the first 21st century Horror genre film to come across to me (personally) as a return to the feel of 20th century Horror genre classics. Years ago, I met _Tom Noonan_ here in NYC. He is in _'The House of..'_ , but our brief convo was focused on his appearance in the Michael Mann classic *_'Heat'_* _(Dinero, Pacino, Kilmer, Trejo, Sizemoore, etc.)._

I have to disagree on the length. The movie was 1hr 45 minutes. If you cut it to 1hr 20 min, you would really hurt this film. I think it's one of the best horror films of the last 10 years, but I agree it's not for everyone. We had a good audience in our theater. Hope it does well.
Brittany Snow and Mia Goth in a Ti West film had my attention from the get go. For me, WOULD YOU RATHER was one of the better horror films to come out in years. Love Brittany Snow in it!
Man oh man I’m so split on this one! There’s a lot of movies in this style that I love, but also so many that I’m just not a fan of! Gotta be honest though, your infectious enthusiasm has me nearly buying a ticket already!
"PEARL", biblically, means your "treasure" : 📖 *Matthew 7:6* _“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces."_ The term _"pearl"_ has often been used as a synonym for vagina and loose women _"casting their pearl"_ , i.e., giving or selling the best of themselves (their _"treasure"_ ) to opportunist and vultures. 🤔 Curious thing that the character who most desperately wants to have sexual relations in the film, as well as the character who identifies with "Maxine" and says she "knows" Maxine, happens to be named *PEARL* _(in a movie where every female is casting her pearl)._
The Pastor (Her Dad) Having The Picture of her in church while slandering her let’s us know that more of the story will be revealed in the other 2 films . In which we’ll have to them in a Chronological Order to make the movie make sense . I also think that the old lady is some how related to Mia’s character.
I enjoyed the movie, I really liked how they captured 1979. I have to laugh at myself as I like to go into movies like this, or any other really as unknowingly as possible. Staying away from trailers and the cast. So I thought the cast in X was a bunch of unknowns, until the final credits rolled and I was thinking, oh no way !!! Really liked the looks that they gave everyone, as I obviously didn’t recognize them. However (spoiler) I didn’t like the makeup effects on the elderly couple. I think it would have been better if they cast actual old people in the roles. I just couldn’t buy in on it, plus they were a little too old and feeble, just my opinion, and for some that might be part of it’s charm. But all and all it’s just great to see a horror film like this get a mainstream release, and there was a good crowd at what was the first showing in my area so hopefully it does well.
Ti West loves slow burns. Watch House of the Devil. Complete slow burn. Nothing happens until the end and it's a complete payoff. That's what he's known for. I love that movie! One of the best modern horror movies of the 21st century.
I think the runtime was 1h 45m. Seen this last night and loved it. Ti West does no wrong in my book, love all his stuff and agree this is probably his best effort yet.
@@ryanholmes6546 I didn't stick around for the credits since I was at a film festival and had to go to another movie right after but I've heard in public screenings showing now in the US they have a post credit scene.

I literally enjoyed this movie sooo much it was funny and uncomfortable and slasher and just great acting!! I did figure the old lady was Mia Goth but I loved that
🤔 *¿ SUPER NATURAL component ?* 🤔 This is *_100% spitballing & supposition_* , but beyond the reveal that "Maxine" is the missing daughter shown on the tv screen via the preacher's televised show, there seemed to be a possible connection between "Maxine" and Pearl _(beyond both characters being acted by Mia Goth)._ I was considering if Pearl knew that "Maxine" was a _literal_ younger version of Pearl 😳🤔. "Maxine" was shown to be a character driven by the desire to live beyond the station in life which she had been born into. Both "Maxine" and Pearl at separate points in the film state that they are, *_"Sick and tired of not gettin' what I want."_* Then I wondered if there was another storyline reason _(¿possibly supernatural?)_ why Mia Goth was given both the roles of "Maxine" and Pearl. Pearl even says things to "Maxine" (¿her literal younger self?🤔) along the lines of _"I know you"_ ...I wondered if that could actually be taken literally? During the end credits, right before the post-credits *_'Pearl'_* prequel trailer, the music suddenly changes and Pearl can be heard repeatedly saying something like, _"If you do for me, I will do for you..."_ That is repeated several times to the point where _(coupled with the eerie/ominous music)_ Pearl's words sound like a incantation or offering of herself to "something" ?????😳🤔🙄 Ha...Total *spitballing* here, but I couldn't help but speculate on the possibility of a young Pearl character wanting to be a superstar so desperately that she makes a deal _("sells her soul")_ not only to the porn industry, but with a supernatural entity 😈😳🥴😵 ??? Something happens and although the young Pearl runs away from home and goes on to become _"Maxine" the cocaine snorting porn vixen,_ she ultimately has to _"pay the price"_ of the deal she made with the entity ("I'll do for you if you do for...'"). *WILD SUPPOSITION* and *spitballing* , but once again, there just seemed as if there coulda been something more in regard to "Maxine" and a older Pearl saying the same words in separate scenes, Pearl saying that she knew/knows "Maxine", the reason why the husband only watched that preachers show, and then the sudden eerie music/ominous soundscape change during the end credits when Pearl can be heard repeatedly saying (incantation like) something like, _"If you do for me, I'll do for you.."_ 😈 leading to the 'Pearl' prequel trailer. AGAIN, THIS IS ALL CONJECTURE & 100% SPITBALLING, but based off of all the aforementioned, I couldn't help but wonder if Ti West had some supernatural components in mind for the prequel and/or possible trilogy? 🤔😳... *SPITBALLING* .
When you say a movie is awesome you're basically implying that it's either an A or an A+ movie. You gave this movie a B+ rating, however, and have quite a few criticisms of it. Maybe you should change the title of the video?
I feel the opposite I think people who were expecting a straight forward slasher will be pleased while someone like me who thought a24 would go above and beyond just kind of had to settle with X playing it straight with no twists, well, there are surprises but the conflict isnt anything crazy so if you wanna talk expectations EYE would say go in expecting some beat by beat slasher progression and an underwhelming third act you’ll be wishing had a twist. Its strange because i love Ti West films, even Cabin Fever 2. X is good, but nothing spectacular.
I felt the same way. I enjoyed the movie, but was definitely expecting more of a twist. It's a very straight forward slasher, but it's still entertaining. The ending was still a bit cheesy though in my opinion.
I thought this wannabe slasher movie had zero energy, a ridiculous killer, and dreadfully boring and pretentious cinematography. Basically, it's everything I expected when I heard a24 is trying to make a slasher movie with a director I could care less about.
The movie was OK at best 2.4 out of 5 stars. Let's disassemble the components of the movie. First the easy part, remove the sex scenes. The sex was just lame soft porn filler to justify part of the plot and the movie title. Now we're left with 5 murders scenes: #1) is a stabbing in the neck (somewhat graphic and brutal) #2) is a pitch fork in the eyes through barn wall (typical, nothing special) #3) A guy killed with a shotgun by a pond (off camera and uneventful) #4) A girl getting her head eaten by a gator (cool at best) #5) A girl gets blasted in the head by a shot gun out of focus (uneventful, although her face was gnarly when they showed it). 5a.) A dead dude chained to the ceiling with his pants down promoting Hebrew National hotdogs. Shock factor to make the otherwise boring basement more diabolical. Oh my God! They didn't clean the lint catch in the dryer!!!!! #6) An and old woman gets her head run over by a van at the end. One girl gets away (lucky her) and none of the deaths were anything spectacular or anything you haven't already seen from another horror movie like Friday the 13th, Lake Placid, etc. Let's look at the plot. An X-rated film crew rents a remote cabin to film an X-rated film and they get murdered, that's it. The cabin owner (an elderly farmer) has a wife who appears to have slight dementia and cannot accept her aged body or the fact her husband will not have sexual relations with her anymore due to his heart condition. This bothers her because she considered herself to be a young beautiful "someone" (dancer) once. She has appears to envy the long lost youthfulness of the X-rated film crew and develops a strong disdain towards them. In combination with her husbands constant rejection of her advances equests she goes on a deranged killing spree. This macabre obsession with youthfulness appears to have occurred before prior to the film crew arriving by the evidence of the guy chained in the basement and abandoned cars in the swamp. The ONLY thing I found myself cringing at in this movie, and it takes a lot for me to cringe, was averting my eyes to avoid watching two human raisins attempt the horizontal mambo, which was preceded by murmuring to myself, "Please God no, stop. Don't do that, No, don't do that. ah fuk they're doing it." So, basically this is a rip off of the outstanding 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre . Just swap out Thomas Hewett with an elderly deranged woman (the killer) and Sheriff Hoyt for the old lady's husband (draws in the victims). Introduce a remote farm. Invite some young fresh meat. Deceive, divide and destroy the flock. I will admit there were some cool scene transitions. But, the movie story could have been so much better. It's like Hollywood just keeps regurgitating revisions of plots and scenarios that we've all seen before. It gets a 2.4 out of 5. Would I see it again? No, because it just doesn't have that re-watch quality.
Thank you for this, all of the comments are just people praising this movie and im sitting here like “but why am i suppose to love this movie, why does everyone things its amazing” it had some good parts but overall its just a decent movie at best. The murders werent even all that great, but whatever maybe the sequel and prequel will make this a movie thats so much better on the next watch

The ONLY thing I found myself cringing at in this movie, and it takes a lot for me to cringe, was averting my eyes to avoid watching two human raisins attempt the horizontal mambo, which was preceded by murmuring to myself, "Please God no, stop. Don't do that, No, don't do that. ah fuk they're doing it."
So, basically this is a rip off of the outstanding 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre .
@@danielborjas2389 Because maybe the other people don't know a good horror film when they see it. Maybe they grew up seeing garbage movies. I have seen SO MANY movies that I can tell within 10 to 15min into the movie if it's going to be crap.
