  • I have been fascinated with fire tornadoes for years but at best all that I have seen are videos and guides showing just one way to make them. It seemed time to catalog the different ways to make them, but simply chronicling things is not enough on RyanMake so I have made a beautiful creation that is a combination of fire tornado and the world's largest bladeless fan and the results are are such that the word impressive does not even cut it!

    Here on RyanMake I look at interesting questions and make projects that apply cross disciplinary solutions where things that might not seem to make sense together might just be the best way to do something.

      I have a really weird question but is it possible you can make the fire tornado self sufficient? Like continue whirling on its own past the site?

      @@lawrencemorris2261 I do not that would be possible. The amount of external energy needed to maintain the vortex is very high!

    Doesnt the leafblower use a fan to push the air?

      Yes, The leaf blower does use a bladed impeller to push the air. I think that reason why something like this is called a bladeless fan is that the blades are hidden from sight and that they are not the only thing that causes the air to move because it utilizes entrainment

    Finally one that makes some sense. If I could figure out how to do these videos I would make one of the Glass fire pit, tornado fire, and metal sculpture combination of course the video being the hardest part.
    Wishes you had the Bladeless fan tutorial on RUclips because it's easier, for me , to learn from.

    Step 1, melt the plastic over the metal trashcan. Step 2, when fire start to melt the plastic, throw it out and just use the metal trash can.

      You have to have proper PPE when you are working in dangerous unknown environments and the kitchen qualifies

    Great Video!
    I think I gonna try a combination of the rotating trash can with attached Propellers and 4x Fans. Mounted in a second fire basket for safety. Maybe adding a second Rotation Option to it, for experiments with different airflows.

    I think you could concentrate the vortex even more by modifying the shape of the ring

      What sort of ring shape do you suggest? Are you thinking of making the ring taller?

      @@RyanMake you want a venturi effect to eject the hot gasses more focused out of the barrel. That means you have to narrow the opening at the top and create pressure at the bottom/inside the barrel instead of trying to create the airflow at top with fans.
      If you try to create the draft with fans at the top of the barrel you will almost always create an astable turbulent vortex (as shown in the video ).
      Looking at the venturi,/Bernoulli ideas of pressure and fluidity you can build a firenado barrel with much more stable vortices.

    Pretty nice. You did better than the backyard scientist, but the vortices are not well formed (except for the spinning trash can). What I mean by this is that they do not resemble a long column. Your rotation/updraft ratio is off. It's hard to say which one you have too much of for sure, but typically too much rotation is the cause (unstable rotation might also be an issue). Additionally, the bowl in the center will prevent a vortex from forming nicely. It's pretty important to have a flat center with no obstructions.
    Overall I think you achieved what you wanted to, which is a fire tornado. Sorry if I sound harsh, but I've done a lot of experimenting and built a lot of prototypes to know that a well formed vortex looks much better. If you want to see how well the fire tornado is formed, put something smokey in it. If smoke does not continue to swirl in a tight vortex long after the fire ends, it is not well formed.

    I discovered through a fair bit of trial & error that even though practically any & all quality setups for creating ridiculously intense fires with substantial vertical flame heights universally benefit from/require significant airflow/ventilation ideally beneath where the combustion is occurring (not breaking any new ground pointing that out either hahaha), I've learned that inducing the circular airflow to create a fire tornado/vortex doesn't have a similar requirement to also be positioned beneath the burning fuel, which saves quite a bit of logistical issues when considering the perils of placing any type of fan or (like in your case) any other type of contraption beneath a burning material that has many routes of escaping its combustion chamber by design. My setup is to take some plain-jane steel sheetmetal & roll it into a cylinder shape about 3.5ft tall (I stick welded it together but hose clamps work just fine too) and then cut two rectangular slices out of the side opposite from each other with one about a foot from the bottom and the other offset around 10" higher with the slices big enough to accomodate the outflow port of a 12v "biscuit" fan. I buy the ones that are about 4-5" in diameter and sound like a tiny hair dryer (which I think they could 100% outperform if equipped with proper heating elements. As long as you have them oriented properly, the design of how those fans blow air lends itself *greatly* to creating a fire tornado and eliminates any need for some asinine 5 fan setup. You can actually pull of a *legit* fire tornado with just ONE of those fans too, but it's a very fickle thing to dial in. Two is practically autopilot with basically zero risk of burning your equipment up too since they have a "firewall" instead of a "hole that rains burning death into it" by not being beneath the combustion. Shoot me a reply if you ever make one since I imagine your setup would be far more methodically constructed & kickass as a result, hahaha. I'd love to see it!

    I have built a wood fire pit powered by three underground 250 CFM server fans (PWM modulated) into a dryer drum (also in ground). It really burns very high when you add enough fuel (wood). Now I want to further optimize my flame height. As almost all heat comes from thermal radiation so I want to make my flame higher. And a vortex seemed to be the perfect way as the flame gets denser and taller. But without adding any noise as people are sitting close to the pit and we still want to be able to talk ;) How much CFM or m³/h did you need to achieve the vortex under (semi) wind still conditions and which angle did you glue the vanes? You could bend the vanes perhaps like a wind vane as well, to make the uplift direction more efficient.
    I was thinking about making a round steel frame around the brick layer of my fire pit (to block most of the heat) and then install smaller PC fans into them but I'm afraid the vortex will be interrupted too fast by other winds and it won't really extend my flame. Let me know how four permanent installation will look like and perhaps we can learn something from each other ;) Subbed!

      These are Fantastic questions. The units I am using supposedly can do 340CFM:

      However there the flow is getting redirected and is constricted so I would be surprised if I was getting more that 250 or 300 CFM.
      The vortex was a lot of fun to make and I am working on the next generation because I would like to do something exactly like what you are talking about a more permanent installation.
      I had the veins are about 20 or 30 degrees off vertical and it worked pretty well.

      @@RyanMake I don't know about other countries but in India, we love fire Cracker ( putting crakers in a pressure cooker, burning cracker under water under ice etc ) those types of stuff can give you Indians views at least.

      @@paulwoodman5131 Oh come on man ... dyson sells Bladeless fans with a fan in it and markets it as bladeless since they came out ! ... he just used the term that everybody already knows and that it works on the same principle so he doesnt need to explain everything about it... dont be too smart for your own good ... some people realy try to squezee everything out just to look smart ... dont be that person !

      Yes, a bit of a misnomer, but it has become an industry standard for this style of fan that hides the blades deep in the body of the fan. I have some ideas for a truly Bladeless fan coming up but those will take some time.

      I think the idea is that there are percievably no blades as compared to a tradition fan where the blades are readily visible.

    Hate to tell you this. That is NOT a bladeless fan. The blades are just in the damn leafblower. All you did was duct the air into the ring.

      True. I have some plans for a true bladless fan but for this project I simply used the existing industry terminology for a ducted fan feeding a vented ring.

      I think the two basic reason why that sort of setup is called a bladeless fan is that the blades are concealed giving the illusion of being bladeless and the second reason as that using the blue manifold it buffers the air so that it does not come out choppy like a traditional axial bladed fan.
