Field Day w/ 33ft Mastwerks/Buddipole Setup

My club, the Vaca Valley Radio Club of Solano County had their best field day yet! It was in a new location where we all were able to camp out in out RV's for the weekend.
We scored the highest score to date with 2,330 points and had 234 contacts. The club also fed us lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Thank you Frank/KJ6RWQ and Don/KM6FAK for being our cooks so we could stay on the radio. Also, a hug thanks goes out to our President of the club for allowing us to camp on his property!
The Buddipole/Masterwerks combo worked very well! The quality is top notch and it's as fun as a Lego to build. Stay tuned for a future videos were I'll be using it in Parks for POTA.

In case you are wondering if the Buddipole works I used it to talk to the Eastern USA, Japan, NZ and Australia over the years I had one with a Yaesu FT-897D with twenty watts of battery power in a local park. 🙂

@@HamRadioTV Always careful of the high winds. We get the annoying Santa Ana winds that put a serious damper on antenna deployment.

I like that Masterwerks mast system -- thinking about ordering it . But...a set-up like that and only 2.3K points? Where were all your operators? You should have been in the 5 - 7K point class, at least. My own club has done 7K points as a 2A! That was years ago, and no where near the peak of a solar cycle.

For each band change a move down and move up the mast do adjust the buddipole coils? 😮
Great video. Curious to ask if you would or could recommend this as a home base antenna also? It seems possible but with some limitations such as switching bands without having to lower the mast to move to another clip on the coil. Your thoughts? Thanks.

how well does this perform at 100w compared to a true dipole at equal height
"mil spec grade" means built by the lowest bidder lol Still its a nice setup for quick and easy put up and take down.

Hearing those RTTY tones brought back memories. My old gear... I wouldn't even know where to begin interfacing my AEA gear to a modern PC. I don't even think it can be done. Back in the day if I remember right it was done over com port er uh serial port. Anyway, what are guys using now? Is RTTY alive and well or dead? I have an old AEA DSP 232 Multi-Mode and before that I had an AEA Pakratt 232 mbx or something. I'm sure both are absolutely useless now, but I could just never throw them away. I was mostly CW DX, traffic nets CW and fone, a lil fone yakin', a lil slow scan, a lil RTTY and some buds on 2M FM of course. Most everybody is SK God love 'em.
RTTY is still active. You will hear it a lot during contests. All the new radios are coming equipment with everything internal. Just tune in the signal and read the text right there on the radio's screen. The radio will even save it onto a SD card to transfer it to a comper.

Always been a Buddipole fan. Looks like a well-engineered system. Even though it is shorter, I think this would deliver better results than the Spiderbeam masts. BTW, what is the song you used in the soundtrack for the second half of the video?

The Spiderbeam fiberglass poles come in 3 heights (40,60,85)ft. I had the 40ft and 60ft version. They are best used with a dipole attached to them. No radials required and produce good results. However, after a while, it is necessary to use the clamp system, Spiderbeam provides, to make sure that they don't come down while using them. Temperature and humidity have an effect on the twist and lock extensions. Also, since there is no tripod, they must be tied to another stable object. I usually utilized a fence post. This does limit, of course, where one can go with this type of antenna sysem.
I want one of those mastwerx masts! Hand crank rotation, way cool. The only thing is their website has no prices and you have to call them to order, no online ordering. What? Thats just weird. Soooo im guessing they are very very VERY expensive.
The Mastwerks was built with the military, emergency services and amateur radio in mind. It's constructed with high grade material, to ensure it will stand up during demanding times. Their website is brand new and I'm guessing the pricing and ordering will be coming soon. I don't have the price yet, but it will be on the higher side as it cost more to make.

This looks like a pretty cool setup. I don’t get, however, why I have to sit through commercials to watch a video that is basically a commercial for the product itself though.

RUclips stores about 76 PB (1PB=1,000,000GB) of video data a year and that cost a lot of money and someone has to pay for it! I love this hobby and I'm guessing you like it too! Amateur Radio operators make up around 0.25% of the US population. Companies in this space have to work extremely hard to be profitable and you will see a lot of them teaming up with Content Creators (RUclipsrs) to help spread the word of the products.
Question, did you use any antenna analyzers, what were the results? What type and length of coax did you use? Inquiring minds want to know. KF5GMK.
I used 50 ft of the coax it came with. Yes, it helps to use an analyzer as you're making your adjustments. You can adjust this antenna down to 1.5 SWR using the different coil taps and adjusting the wips. However, I sometimes just get it around 2 SWR and hit the auto tuner on my FT-991A.
If the buddipole is omnidirectional why would you buy an expensive rotational mast? Serious question. Seems like a cool mast, but not sure why kind of directional antenna it would support.
The buddipole can be many types of antennas. In most applications people deploy it as a dipole, as i did in this video. A dipole is not omni and receives/transmits off the sides the best. It really made a difference when I turned towards weaker stations. The rotating mast with guy ropes still in place in a very useful function.

What is the purpose of the crank handle? What mil spec is it? Need a reference, otherwise is just a label/marketing bs if it not measured against a specific mil spec rating. Nice but overprice
The crank turns the antenna on top without disturbing the guy-rope. It works really good for steering a dipole. Interesting point about the mil spec, I don't have any reference numbers. I can tell you its built very well, lightweight and so far, durable. It does carry a higher price, but in this case you're getting what you pay for.
