A lot of people don’t think about this but the main reason why I have a collection is because most DVDs/Blu-rays have multiple languages, this is SO helpful when you are trying to enjoy a movie with someone who only speaks Spanish for instance. I love it!

I have a large highly curated collection of largely boutique discs, and the idea of people looking at my collection, asking questions, watching with me, or lending out, has always been a mirage. I have always wanted it to be that, but the reality for me, is that nobody cares. They walk into my space and at most comment that I have a lot of movies. Just once it would be fun to have a person actually look, but it has literally never happened even once.

Luckily at least with social media it’s easier to have people see it online and spark a conversation. I haven’t had it happen too often in my regular life, but it has happened. I had furniture delivered once where the guy spent like 15-20 minutes just looking at what I had displayed in the rooms.

@LelandTownsel-xj7ph that is an impossible question to answer but, to pick one I love, the Arrow Video 4k box set of Tremors. It's an all-time favorite and a stunning box set.

I know what you mean. My collection means a lot to me and I'm very proud of it, but nobody else cares.
The last time my family came over it was like they didn't even notice they were there and no-one said a single word about it.

Pro/con to have an organized collection a listing program is a must because it takes dedication and discipline to maintain . So you avoid duplicate items.

Great video Tim. It's a battle we all face. . Space and finding what i want to watch is my biggest issue or buying something I want to watch and putting it in the collection and forgetting what I bought or what was it I wanted to watch . Been thinking of doing a new release section of new titles I add to the collection.
I love sorting and working on the collection. It's a zen for me . To me a large collection is once you pass the 2k mark. Since that's when it starts to need a good amount of space to display

    • @timtalkstalkies
      @timtalkstalkies  3 месяца назад +1

Dang…hopefully you’ll be able to have a great display in the future. You can only work with what you have though so it’s a struggle. I have multiple rooms with this stuff, but I still have things I’d love to be way better and displayed nicer.

The only con I have is that I live in a studio now and have no space. When I used to live in a 4 bedroom house I didn't have that trouble. The pro like you say a huge selection to chose from. I'm a horror fan so have very little of other genres but I watch more the movies from 70s and 80s when I grew up. I guess most people are like that watch those films the bring them nostalgia. Another con for me at least is buying the same movie twice. I have like 200 repeated movies because I didn't remember I had them already. Even though I've a list! My memory is not what it used to be. Good topic and cool video Tim!👉🙂👈

To summarize his points into lists:
    Pros:
    -Lots of selection
    -Able to lend out movies
    -Tells others about you
    -Pride in your collection
    -Getting rare stuff
    -Having a hobby
    Cons:
    -Endless looking/indecisiveness
    -Takes up space
    -Sorting takes work
    -Cost

Large collections are definitely a labour of love. And you're 100% right - we're in it for the movies, not looking for a return on the investment.
While I still have the space I've gone for a kind of archival collection and the vast majority I don't want to get rid of, at least not until I run out of storage space, except for the DVDs, because I've become a High Def snob...and I will run out of space eventually. lol
I have about 3500 movies at the moment, but I buy regularly so it's always increasing. And I've DEFINITELY spent too long deciding on something to watch, occasionally up to a couple of hours...lol

Hi Tim! I also have a space issue. Just reached over 2000 Blu-ray’s with about 1000 DVD’s. Have to purge the collection and downsize a little. Just too many movies to hold onto. Another reason for me wanting to downsize is my neighbor a few houses down just had massive house fire and lost everything. Can’t wrap my head around that, and I want to put some movies out there for others to enjoy, rather than just sitting on my shelves. I will invite my neighbor to come over if they want to rebuild some of their movies and see if they would like to take any of mine. I’m sure it is not on the top of their list, but maybe down the road they would like to revisit some movies. Great topic and one I think about all the time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and love reading the comments on this topic!

I would love to lend stuff out to people but honestly, I spend way too much money on the stuff as it is and I can guarantee you outside of maybe my parents, people wouldn't handle it right. They'd just have the attitude that oh it's just plastic, no big deal. So they're not concerned about putting it back in its case or where to put their fingers when picking up a disc (hint: it's not the part that is easily scratched). Plus the biggest issue for me is a lot of people have consoles and they're the stick the disc in kind of players, at least the modern ones. My issue with those is there is a lot of built up dust and grime in that area that as the disc is sliding in, could get onto the disc and damage it. I try to only use players that have trays that come out that way I can keep on top of getting specs of dust and dirt off of there before it hits the disc. Most people aren't pedantic enough to care, especially because it's not theirs.
Also, I see evidence of how little people care when I go to the library. I've been checking out Blu-Rays recently and my gosh, even the discs with scratch resistant coating are getting scratched due to improper handling. It's ludicrous.

Some excellent points, enjoyed the video. Space is definately a con. We are at just over 6,000 titles and are preparing to see if we can sell our current house and upgrade. Who knows in this market. Packing our collection has been an experience and very expensive (never seen so many totes). I laughed because we do the same thing when picking a movie, waste way to much time and end up falling back on a series we have watched a million times, IT Crowd, Cheers, Threes Company to name a few.

Thanks for watching. Yeah it’s crazy how often I end up defaulting to a tv show because of how long it takes for a movie. If I don’t know the mood I’m in for which genre I can spend entirely too long. Some nights I just saw screw it and do tv shows right from the start so I don’t waste the time deciding haha.

I worked at Blockbuster Video in the 90’s and always dreamed of owning so many movies to watch and display. I think my dream has mostly come true as I’ve got over 3,000 blu rays, 200 or so dvd’s and about 50 4K’s. I’ve started winding down on collecting tho, keeping it mostly to new releases or boutique label upgrades and not double dipping for every movie in 4K. I like knowing that I can watch whatever I want to watch whenever I want to watch it and not have to rely on streaming.

When I can't decide what movie to watch I turn to RUclips and watch "first time watching..." channels to see other people's reactions to movies. They're usually 30-40 minutes with the bonus of getting the highlights of the movie shown. Before this video I just watched a reaction to "My Cousin Vinny". The biggest "pro" for me is having access to movies I love that don't exist anywhere digitally other than torrents (and even those may have no seeds.) The biggest "con" is the cost of storage space to back up what you have to a Plex server. I've reached a point where I need to build a whole new server at a cost of nearly $3,000.

Great video and love the conversation. For me, at the moment, I move every 2-3 years with moving companies that are notorious at losing boxes/damaging/packing poorly etc... I try to be very selective due to space as well. I don't know a single person who owns physical media (just streaming), so I hide my movies in bins or drawers. Due to my nomadic occupation, I will get rid of movies that I'll never watch again. My favorite genre is classic film, so I try not to blind buy too often. Luckily, most films I'm interested in can be found for free on You Tube before purchasing. Kino and Warner Archive are my favorite labels to purchase from. Kino sales are SO hard not to blind buy from though, their prices are very reasonable and I need to hit the free shipping, lol.

I would say: if your collection is so large that you are not able to watch every title, and just buy movies just for the sake of collecting, that's a con.
Also, I have spent many evenings gazing in my movie closet, for up to 20 minutes only to plop on the couch to watch Sunny in Philadelphia or What We Do in the Shadows.... it can be overwhelming and/or exhausting to commit to 2 hours of quality viewing sometimes.

  • @mitchgray7391

I think having tons of movies makes it so much harder to pick what to watch. I only own just over 700 blu rays. And sometimes I look through them for an hour trying to pick something. And I end up just giving up. Same with my video games. I have about 1400 games and I never know what to play. Lol. My cd collection is the biggest at almost 2000 cds. And I find it easier to pick music because I have 6 disc changer and I can usually pick out 6 discs in about 15 to 20 minutes.

I didn't want to spend the $30 or so on Breakdown for just a blu-ray. But now I wish I did. Although I don't know why they haven't released that movie on 4K since it has a 4K digital version. Luckily I have a big bonus room upstairs for all my 6,000+ movies but most of my dvds (2000+) are stored disc binders. I do need to have some custom shelves built though to be able to store all of them around the room. Right now I probably got about a 1,000 or so blu-rays in plastic containers stacked up in a corner of the room.

I just recently surpassed 2000 movies in my collection and I actually enjoy having a lot of movies I haven't watched yet in my collection. Also while I agree most movies go down in value, it seems theres also a lot of movies that go out of print or are hard to find and therefore become more expensive.

Tim, is there any chance you can look into the camera lens? The looking to one side thing is very distracting. Also, you need to zoom out just a bit.
Having said that, our video room is due a cull. I'm focusing mostly on getting rid of some mainstream DVDs and keeping the weirder stuff.

    • @timtalkstalkies
      @timtalkstalkies  3 месяца назад +1

To be honest I never realized I was looking to the side. I generally feel like I am looking at the lens, but maybe it’s something to work on. Appreciate that. Definitely something I can try to work on. Zoom wise it isn’t actually zoomed in at all. It’s more so where my rolling chair is in relation to the lens. Sometimes I’m rolled a little closer sometimes a little further back. Again something to try and be cognizant of.
I definitely need to cull some stuff at some point to make room. Also considering putting 4k discs into the Blu-ray steelbooks of the same movies. I don’t need two cases on shelves when one is just a regular 4k case. But I haven’t got around to something like that yet.

Just a waste of money, like with almost all collecting hobbies.
Grown men collect hundreds or thousands of games, movies, action figures or music instead of saving that money.
No one plays all these games or movies. It's basically hoarding. Be more selective and save money. 30 or 40 games for the current system are more than enough to enjoy.
And If you're done with a game and you will never play it again, just sell it and get some money back.
