      Most of the folks I know at the studios and distributors are genuinely nice folks who love movies and entertainment and are doing their best in a tumultuous time. Certainly nobody's perfect, but it seems like a thankless job in which it's hard to make the fans happy, no matter how hard they try. I'm glad people are connecting with Todd, because I think he's done great things for the studio he works for currently and has gotten so many movies out to be seen and talked about again.

    Enjoyed the interview :) I think a lot of the digital fears come from how it's handled in the gaming industry. With major companies like Ubisoft saying stuff like "gamers need to get used to not owning there games." and revoking digital licenses from people.
    Just overall scummy practices like certain games requiring to always be online to play or removing disc drives from consoles. Microsoft seems the be pushing all digital the most of the big 3 consoles.

    Great stuff Heath. To the point about the vinyl craze, I don't think it correlates to movies and tv on disc. I think vinyl as a physical format is so unique. The fact that it is not only analog, but actually tactile, lends itself to a romance digital media can't replicate. We try with packaging, and it works on some level, but its just not the same.

    Fantastic interview with Todd, Heath! Thanks for putting this together for us. I believe if 4k players ran the cost of DVD and Blu-ray players, the sales of 4k disc would go up.

    Great interview. It’s interesting to see the info / insight from someone in the industry, and his take on where things are at.
    We really are living in superb time for home video between the formats and the films and shows being brought back . I’m actually surprised every day by the news of what is coming out , the bonus materials being used and the formats or special editions . I can’t say any single quarter alone there is a surprise. If say there’s been a surprise almost every month . You are spot in Heath - it truly an embarrassment of riches . I just picked uk the 4K edition of the 1976 King King steel book . What an amazing collectors item . Great visual look to the packaging, with the clear slip case actually having art directly on it like an animation cell ? I was so happy over the past 8 months to finally see Young Sherlock Holmes on blu ray !! Among some of the best blu ray or 4K releases ? Hard to say but if eager the Arrow boxes for Bruce Lee and Conan , and even Hellraiser and Psycho were impressive . Among the amazing points for me with the re-releases are the choices to include alternate cuts of the films . I was stunned to see King King have north the theatrical cut and tv version on 4K ….. Bruce Lee really has to be a holy grail item with king list cuts of the film and several lost documentaries .
    It’s the same for music . I collect music / CDs and there are both great boutique labels and nice releases from the major labels too. I just picked up Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express and am waiting for Brian Auger and the Trinity box and a Nektar / Recycled box set. Who would have thought such obscure bands would see their old albums come out for new generations to explore and enjoy ?
    The physical media world is perhaps at the height of a golden age ! I’m definitely enjoying . Thanks for setting up the great interview !!!
    Chris

    What a great conversation, Heath. Todd seems like a super nice guy and it's great to hear the thought of someone working for one of the big studios. All power to him and his team for not giving up on physical media like *ahem* other sudios. I loved how at the end he actually started asking you questions. Very humble and very respectful of your knowledge and status in the community.

    That was a great interview Heath. Unfortunately none of my wishlist comes from Paramount. As an older collector, most of the titles that I would like to own on 4K are probably pre 1980. These titles were major motion pictures like Ben-Hur and Doctor Zhivago. Why MGM and Warner did not release North by Northwest and Strangers on a Train around the same time that Universal gave us the gift of all those Hitchcock gems in 4K. It’s very frustrating to watch these tiles being ignored . Once again, great interview. I learned a lot. Thanks Heath

    Thank you for this excellent and informative interview! I really enjoyed this peek behind the curtain of Paramount home entertainment.
    Todd, I LOVE and appreciate the incredible-looking BACK TO THE BEACH release in the Paramount Presents line and have my fingers tightly crossed that we will see two early releases from the PP collection, GHOST (1990) and Hitchcock's TO CATCH A THIEF (1955) finally get 4K releases next year - as they will both celebrate notable anniversaries! Thank you for all you do and I look forward to seeing what all you have in store for us throughout the rest of the year!

    Another fantastic discussion, and I really enjoyed hearing from Todd (who I follow on social media). Just a real down to earth discussion on something we all enjoy, and learn a little bit from an insider perspective. I love how you approach these interviews too, allowing your guest to speak there mind, and interject with substance and your own insight. If/when you write your book which I'll presume will contain snippets of these discussions in print, I hope I can get an autographed copy someday.

    It is unfortunate but I see 4K headed for burn on demand future.
    That would be the best for all concerned. Those who are hard core 4K fans would get what they want and the rest of us would not have to deal with the "Why no 4K" nonsense , all the time.

    I love Paramount they respect their catalog, you can tell but the titles they release. They don’t horde them or sit on their catalog. I think he answered my question about why some films don’t get a physical release, I said maybe it’s because of the music copyright issues. I think he said that’s the issue or maybe I misheard him. Great interview!

    It's interesting to see streaming services playing ads even when you are a subscriber. It reminds me of seeing ads for upcoming dvd releases when putting in a new disk. It seems like releases have gotten rid of advertisements on the release itself.

    I wonder how insiders view the removal of content for tax savings - permanently (?) eliminating media from circulation. It's a growing trend, and I'm bummed that Paramount just did so with Star Trek Prodigy. Its second season is completing production to stream elsewhere (so much for P+ being the one home of Star Trek). I'm curious if there is any hope to *physically* resurrect the films & shows that fall victim to this practice, as it seems more will suffer this fate going forward.

      I'll try to get someone to go on record with an answer for that in the future, but I'll say that I don't know anyone who is okay with it. Nobody I deal with is okay with art being erased from existence.

    One area that I would love to see explored in any future interviews is the challenge of getting comedies upgraded to 4K. While many great comedies have been upgraded, my sense is the genre doesn't get the same attention as other genres.

    Paramount wouldn't even release Mission Impossible Fallout on 3d disc. Or any 3D movie since.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  4 месяца назад

      Seems pretty obvious why, though: 3D discs don't sell anymore. They're now in the realm of boutique releases.

    • @Joe-hh8gd
      @Joe-hh8gd 4 месяца назад

      @@CerealAtMidnight They sell very well on Amazon. Avatar WoW 3d had to get another replication to meet demand. Even Robot Monster...multiple replication and sold out. Titles released years ago are still selling. Sometimes even outselling 4k at least initially. And 4K market share isnt much higher than 3D at its height. Current 4k market share...12%? ClassicFlix just canceled the 4k disc of Meet John Doe...not enough preorders. (The bd will still be released, just not 4k disc). No such problem with tbeir 4k of I THE JURY...but thats because it also had 3D. The fact that it sells as well as it does DESPITE no capable panel sets and often even being unsearchable on Amazon is pretty indicative.

    • @Off-channel21
      @Off-channel21 4 месяца назад +4

      Oh puh-leeze. Ive seen 3D discs on charts from Walmart & Amazon. In some cases, preorders outdid 4K. And its not like 4k is a big seller either. I have a couple screenshots illustrating it but cant be added here... the truth is, if its offered, they will come.

    • @Joe-hh8gd
      @Joe-hh8gd 4 месяца назад +2

      @@CerealAtMidnight Boutique? Ask Shout who are releasing Coraline in 4k about the out of print 3D version. Or the 2 CGI Addams Family discs, 4k only. Sales of those will be almost non-existent without the 3D versions. So much for boutique labels. No matter how well 3D sells non-mainstream (and requiring additional replication to meet demand, the powers that be will always claim otherwise. Ignoring consumers is one reason why i dont care much about physical anymore.

    • @Joe-hh8gd
      @Joe-hh8gd 4 месяца назад

      Speaking of boutique, the 4k restoration from ClassicFlix of MEET JOHN DOE had the 4k disc canceled due to poor pre-orders. It will still be released on Blu. Of course, no such issue for I THE JURY which had sales buoyed by 3D.
