Statler Brothers were my so favorite growing up. I wrote to them. Had many records.
Miss the good ole days. Growing up on a farm way up on a mountain. I loved the older country singers.
I was inlove with the Statler Brothers. Anything I found on them I kept in a box under my bed. 8 of us kids n we made our own fun. My three sisters and I made pretend microphones, made pretend guitars, we loved pretending we were singers. 😁
We would sing their songs and dad, oldest sister , two brothers n youngest sister was our audience. 😁
I miss growing up on the farm. Best life ever. I hate change. My sister year younger then me past away about 7 years ago. 😢😔
Dad past away, mom died 2017 dementia. I took care of her from 2014 till her death on Dec 24 2017. 😔
My family was music people. My dad and his brother Jimmy played guitar and use to sing and play on the radio.
Mom sang on the radio. She could play the fiddle by ear.
Use to sing Patsy Clines songs, Kitty Wells. She sounded like them.
My sister Marlene that passed played guitar, banjo. Brothers played guitar. Two other sisters n myself never did. But sang. I use to record myself singing with the country singers from the radio. I could sound like Crystal Gales, Tanya Tucker, Donna Fargo. Good ole days are gone. Miss them. We lived where we had no running water on the house. Packed water from spring house for everything. It was down littl bank from the house.
Oh my pap, moms dad n his friends played on the radio every week end. He played the harmonica, guitar, fiddle, banjo, many other instruments. He was good we all stay at paps n grans n go out in his old truck to listen to them on the radio.

My parents both had cancer and mom didn't sing on the radio. Hi! Yeah, there were 8 of us in our farm house. We ended up moving from the farm house to another place where we raised chickens. I remember gathering the eggs. We had so many we sold them on a stand out front. I believe we sold vegetables too.

Out of all the GREAT tenors that have performed as a part of Southern Gospel Quartets, and tenors that backed up major Country Music acts; Lew DeWitt was the best and has not been overtaken even since his passing. He had this warble or rapidly uttered, gliding tones along with his perfect tenor pitch that always gave The Statler Brothers an edge from the very beginning. It's a sound that some people wouldn't notice until it is gone. Listen to songs with Lew and then songs recorded after Jimmy Fortune came along and you can readily tell the difference. This is not to take anything away from Fortune as he and the Statler's had an outstanding career until they decided to retire. But, Lew DeWitt was the G.O.A.T. I know this song is about a "woman of ill repute" but I have always loved this song. Rose probably showed him more love and caring than those "Christian" people that looked down their snooty manicured noses at him.

My dad heard this song once and was quite intrigued with it and wanted to play it on his accordion. The only trouble was when he could think of the tune, by the time he got his accordion out, he'd forgotten it. Man was he frustrated. Then I told him I had the song in my repertoire of music, and he brought his accordion over and listened to it a few times and he had it down.

She was called a scarlet woman by the people
Who would go to church but left me in the street
With no parents of my own, I never had a home
And an eighteen year old boy has got to eat
She found me outside one Sunday morning
Begging money from a man I didn't know
She took me in and wiped away my childhood
A woman of the streets this lady Rose
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of life I understand
She was a handsome woman, just thirty-five
Who was spoken to in town by very few
She managed a late evening business
Like most of the town wished they could do
And I learned all the things that a man should know
From a woman not approved of I suppose
But she died knowing that I really loved her
Off life's bramble bush, I picked a rose
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of life I understand
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm livin'
Is the only kind of life I understand

I don't know where you copied and pasted this from, but whoever wrote it got a few things wrong.
      1. It's "begging money from a man I didn't know," not "taking money."
      2. It's "She was a handsome woman just thirty-five," not "thirty-four.
      3. It's "Is the only kind of life I understand," not "love I understand."
Glad you enjoy the Statler Brothers. I had the pleasure of seeing them live many times in the 1970's & 80's, and talking with them in person on their travel bus.
