If I can defend the movie ending, I'd imagine that the cop had sympathy for the Grinch because of how much of a donkey the Mayor was with humiliating him.

Yeah, it was the mayor's fault for making the Grinch hate Christmas in the first place. All because he was jealous of him of befriending Martha. She was only doing it out of the kindness in her heart.

So interesting fun fact: Dr. Seuss was overwhelmingly protective of his brand while he was alive. He was very hesitant to even allow Chuck Jones to make the famous short and only relented because they fought in WWII together and were good friends.
In the end, though, he wasn't a fan of it. He felt like it went on too long and on top of that, he really hated "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" as he felt that people would associate The Grinch with being a terrible person rather than who he becomes at the end of the book, which he turned out to be right about lol.
Needless to say, this adaptation(if not all of them) would make him roll in his grave.

You know, as someone who DIDN’T grew up with any Stories by Dr.Seuss or the Grinch, I think I can say that this movie is like Home Alone.
It’s Far from the worst, it’s far from being the best, sometimes good sometimes bad, but it is, wether we like it or not, a classic of sorts
I mean, kinda hard to not remember at least parts of both if one watched them.
Other than that, I believe that it's important to say - I watched movies from my country that have equivalent of 7+ rating, despite actually having stuff that would make it at least 16+ (b00bs), so I guess I'm like the Grinch in comment section.

I like how this change to the Whos not only make a very relevant statement about how people IRL indulge far too much around the holidays, but it also shows that the turn of events that follows was beneficial and, dare I say, necessary, for the Whos just as much as it was for the Grinch.
    🧐
That was always my problem with the original story, as written. If the toys and the feasting are so disruptive that it’s bothering the Grinch from several miles away, there’s a problem that’s not being addressed!

Yeah, that moment was a bit much for me too. 🤨
But strangely, I didn’t see most of the vulgar humor in this movie as disrespectful to the original story.
This really gave me pause for thought recently, because I normally have a very low tolerance for vulgarity inserted into something originally intended for children.
But after puzzling till my puzzler was sore, I realized that the reason why the vulgar humor didn’t bother me in this movie is because it only comes from the Grinch himself, who (even in his previous incarnations) was always a vulgar character. Dr Seuss himself wrote that famous song describing how vulgar and disgusting his creation was.
    👍
Whereas the Mike Myers Cat in the Hat, not only goes WAY TOO FAR with the vulgar humor (even by Grinch standards), but it’s produced by a character that was never meant to be vulgar, is ill-suited for it, and the vulgarity has no purpose whatsoever in his story!

I have huge nostalgia for this film, I was 5 when it came out and I remember seeing it in the theater. I also remember staying with my mom during the credits as the theme song “Where Are You Christmas” by Faith Hill played (still one of my favorite Christmas songs).
Looking back, yeah it has its flaws but the actors do quite a good job especially Jim Carrey (one of my favorite roles of his) and Taylor Momson who really did a great job as Cindy.

    Interesting interpretation of this scene!
    🤔
Personally, I always thought that this moment implied that the word “grinch” existed long before the birth of our main character, and was always used in reference to a person lacking in Christmas cheer.
    🧐
Although, this theory also raises a lot of questions regarding why his parents gave him such a name with such a counterintuitive meaning to it.
    🤨
The only explanation I can think of is that maybe the newborn Who’s names are not chosen by their parents, but by their creator (perhaps being inscribed on the baskets they were born in) and said creator foresaw the sort of life The Grinch would grow to lead, and named him accordingly.
    🤔

And I didn't even know it existed cause around that same time, my parents bought me a VHS copy of the 1966 Chuck Jones adaptation that came with "Horton Hears A Who" as a bonus segment. Then when I was 5, my sister rented the Jim Carry version from the video store, and 5 year old me looked at that DVD cover and was like "That's not the Grinch.", and was tramatized by the scene of Cindy getting yeeted into the mail shoot so I avoided the film for years despite my sister dick riding this adaptation since the year 2000. And yet she won't go near "A Christmas Story" because of the tongue poll scene.

This is unironically my favorite Christmas movie because it was our family tradition to watch it every year on Christmas Eve at my grandparents' annual Christmas Eve party. Why? Because it was the only Christmas movie my grandma had on VHS.
Also I noticed that whether or not you love or absolutely loathe this movie frequently hinges on whether or not you were a kid when it came out. The kids who watched it when it came out loved it and grew up to be adults that still love it because as kids, we typically didn't compare and scrutinize movies and could like both versions. People who were already adults at the time are the ones typically responsible for its reputation and overly negative reception because they grew up with the classic film and held it to that standard.

The Grinch definitely falls in the early 2000s category, where their reputations of being bad, overshadows the actual movies. The Grinch, Catwoman, Cat In The Hat, and the live action Scooby-Doo films fall under this category, since you hear how bad they are, instead of about the actual movies themselves.

I have special memories of this films poster scaring me as a child but I still try to watch every year around christmas time because of how infectiously funny Jim Carrey's performance as the furry green grump known as The Grinch is. I like this one and the boris karloff Chuck Jones cartoon from the 1960 sure they both are different tone-wise but the message is still strong and the book is a whole other level of an author using his creative powers to analyse a holiday he didn't find much of an appeal to really interesting stuff.

1966 is a Holiday Classic that at the Time making it would be shocking that it Aged like Fine Wine and Seuss had full control over it while keeping his Vision of the Story Intact which nowadays is a Rarity, 10 out of 10, 2000 to me is my Favorite Grinch Adaptation and my Favorite of the Dr.Seuss Adaptations Second being Cat in the Hat(No Joke that’s a Guilty Pleasure for Mine), 2000 felt like a Improvement with Jim Carrey having my Respect in this Role and that Green Yak Made Suit and it makes me feel Emotional Every Time I see it, it also has Charm, Hilarious Moments, Soul, and Heart, it’s a Masterpiece that I would Rewatch Every Year even with its Flaws, 10 out of 10, and 2018 is a Abomination that plays it too Safe like the Lorax, but the Grinch is far worse as it’s the Worst Illumination Movie that I swear I fall asleep the more I Watch it, it’s Literally Illumination making a Grinch Movie and taking Elements and the Writers of Despicable Me but more Generic, Boring, Heartless, Soulless, and Tasteless, I will Never Watch 2018 Again, it’s a Terrible Movie and Adaptation that Insults the Original Source Material, 1 out of 10.

I too love how all the Whos down in Whoville are embracing the worst aspects of the holiday. The movie's holding up a mirror to the audience and saying "Hey... This is you. Stop being a tool and remember what Christmas is SUPPOSED to be about."

This movie, imo, didn't have the twist needed.
I feel if when the presents were about to go over the cliff and Grinch starts to pull them up an Who shows up and pushes them over. Have it be a twist where the true Grinch can be anywhere. Have it so this Who is the one who did everything anti-Grinch so they could destroy Christmas using Grinch as a scapegoat.
Make Grinch into being a hero, the first person to stand up and confronts the liar in front of the town and have him admit he was going to destroy the presents but hesitated and seeing this bad Who made him realize where he belongs, and have the Whos realize the value in Christmas isn't the presents but to stand together. To support each other. This bad Who isn't redeemed to show not everyone can be saved.
This gives us an extra act, lets us remove some padding, and provides a unique twist so there is reason to watch this. Now it isn't competing with the original and has a more modern message while still being able to say we spend too much on Christmas and forgot the meaning and we needed someone grumpy to help us realize that.

I'd still prefer the Jim Carrey Grinch movie over The Illumination Grinch movie which yes I have seen The illumination Grinch movie (2018) it's just as Bland overly colorful and forgettable as The Lorax (2012) with the overly product placement with it's commercials and the one I'd remembered of Why I HATE Illumination Grinch movie they did cringe worthy Rap and the guy who played Doctor Strange in MCU who voices The Grinch just doesn't really match

if I had the pick which movie put real fun and thought into it I'd say The Grinch. it's fun, entertaining, it's not as good as the OG but you can tell everything behind during the making was cared for in a sense.. Unlike cat and the hat which was just a sad cash grab and a horrible remake of Dr.Seuss cat in the hat.

I don't think this movie was ever that bad, because it does keep the spirit of the original, but it does it through a cynical take on the story. Yes it's not a simple story like the original of whos good and Grinch bad, however it makes both parties clouded by their own views. It modernizes the story and shows the story through a more extreme lense, which fits for our modern world.

Indeed! It was creative and decided to hold up a mirror and told its audience to shape up and learn the lesson the Whos had to, and people didn't like it. Color me shocked XD
I liked the change. I agree it works as a unique take that reflects our modern consumerism. It works for an extra layer to a feature-length Grinch movie, for sure!

To me Jim Carrey's performance overshadowed the Grinch. I know he was supposed to be the Grinch but I just couldn't help but see Jim Carrey even under all those pounds of makeup and prosthetics.

Hmm... I do not recall hating this movie growing up. But... I didn't necessarily "liked" it? I dunno... I just thought it was okay. I remember watching this a lot in elementary and middle school. ...and on Cartoon Network. Would this be a good movie? No. A bad movie? ...No, again. It's a movie. And falls into the category of easily able to make fun of. ...cast me to review movies. That is my application.
