I did not grow up in a religious household so all I associated with Christmas day was the presents under the tree and how great it felt, so the idea of waking up to find everything gone was probably my second worst nightmare after being trapped in a cage on the bottom of the ocean with a tiger....true story. Anyway, knowing how upset I would personally be it was unthinkable at first that the Who's wouldn't wake up the next morning and loose their shit over what had happened. But anyway, seeing how they ultimately reacted gave me so much more awareness and appreciation about the spiritual significance of Chritmas, far beyond the consumer element I had only appreciated beforehand so all was good I suppose.
Same here, and it did give me nightmare as a kid and I had to cover my eyes whenever he appeared or I watch it. Still does get me a little now that I'm grown-up.
I think one of the biggest reasons this is such a good rendition of the story is Dr Seuss. As you mentioned, the author consulted with him to see how to develop it correctly. In the recent versions, it feels like they said, “add goofy things that makes no sense because it’s doctor Seuss.” It’s kind of similar to how playhouses always have to portray Shakespeare plays as serious as possible.
You brought up exactly why I don't like the two "new" Grinch movies. In those the Whos had to learn the meaning of Christmas, but in the original they knew it all along.
That really is one of the bigger core issues with the two feature films. In both of Universal's adaptations the Whos are so obsessed with the capitalistic side of Christmas that they become insufferable. You want the Grinch to steal it from them, they don't deserve it. It also results in the lesson being forced down your throat. Because apparently people are too stupid to see characters being a good example and learning from it.
there's a new Musical version if you want to add that to your repetoire... www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2020-12-10/the-grinch-musical-dr-seuss-nbc-christmas
I find it weird that people prefer the Who's being an entire race of Mary Sues who are perfect and don't have to learn a lesson (that also happens to help fill a theatrical run time) instead of being fleshed out and relatable like being bummed out that all your stuff is gone, but you still have each other and that's what truly counts. It was fine for a 22 minute TV special but for a whole movie, if the Who's had nothing to add other then being a plot device then most would see that as lazy writing.
@@JustChuck1982 *hums the Hitchcock theme* i guess, but at the same time it's far from Dark Toon status, i mean sure he's stealing the gifts but we all know he's going to give them back, now if he said or acted like he was gonna DESTROY all the stuff he stole, then THAT would be Dark.
Thank you for this beautiful review Doug! Along with you, I've never been satisfied with any other adaptation of the Grinch for a multitude of reasons. But something I never quite put together that you pointed out here is that the Who's never questioned where everything went, they were just so overjoyed to celebrate Christmas and everything it is that they didn't even think twice. Hearing that in your review actually brought me to tears. The Grinch was my grandma's favorite Christmas movie and it was something that we always shared together and so it always reminds me of her. I always love your reviews but I have been anticipating hearing you talk about the actually GOOD Grinch, and I was not dissapointed!
I also enjoyed the Jim Carrey one (especially the scene where his heart grew three sizes and yeah, that shit would be painful as hell), but this is the version I grew up with as a child, and thus it's always the first one that comes to mind for me.
Honestly I feel the Jim Carrey version would have been better if the focus was just Cindy showing how nice Christmas is and the Grinch just not buying it to the point he does steal it. Some of the extra elements like the disgruntled town, the mayor, the girlfriend, and the backstory do feel more unnecessary as Doug mentioned and it would have probably been more impactful if the Town already knew the meaning and the Relationship with Cindy was the focus, especially since that was the best addition to the story the film had and made for the best interactions with her genuine innocence vs the Grinch’s relatable bitterness
The more I watch Doug's Dark Toon episodes, the more I think they're his very favorites to review. He takes such pleasure in dissecting every minute detail of them, and relishing the scary moments. With Dark Toons, Doug's like a kid going through a candy shop with wonderment over all the things to choose. (Keep doing them, Doug, because they'll always have a delighted audience!)
Thanks, Doug, that was a wonderful look at an amazing tv special. My very favorite part of HTGSC is that moment when the Grinch is being dragged toward the cliff edge and things look hopeless, and then Karloff’s voice gently says, “And what happened then...well, in Whoville they say...” Tears me up every time. :)
I love how they don’t explicitly tell you “the reason” why the grinch hates Christmas. Yes they sorta explain that he doesn’t like the noise, but in the movies, THEY SHOW AND TELL YOU THE REASON, so it’s kinda false advertising when they say “so what ever the reason”, it’s like YOU JUST TOLD US THE REASON!!!! Not this cartoon though. That’s why this is a timeless and endless classic
This is always my first watch for Christmas time. I grew up with this special from childhood. Karloff’s narration and the amazing singing by Thurl Ravenscroft never ceases to make me less Grinchy at the holidays.
What I liked was the fact that when he's doing the theft part he went to the point of even stealing the furniture. He left a bare sitting room and and kitchen, but he left the ice box and cupboards just to drive the point home.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas is my mom's all-time favorite Christmas story. I love the Grinch taking the ice cubes. My youngest brother's favorite when he was little was the Grinch stealing the "roast beast". He just loved the words "roast beast". My favorite part is when the Grinch stuff the tree up the chimney. My mom's is Cindi's, "Why are you taking our Christmas tree? Why?" Such a classic.
I like how no one is running around crazy and there's no pop culture in it. I also just LOVE how the narrator talks. He is just so wonderful. I dont remember what I was thinking while watching this though.
My favorite part is when he picks up that sled over his head in his heart filled triumph. It's an incredible climax to resolve his recent misdeeds. His heart made him super strong like Superman, and nothing could stop him from doing the right thing from now on
I’ve been watching it every year all my life. This cartoon saved me and my brother one year because I went to pick him up for thanksgiving and found EVERYTHING in my house gone when I got home. We watched this and had turkey sandwiches and this beautiful cartoon made it all ok!! As for favorite part? I love when max decided to just ride on the sled since he couldn’t keep up. That always cracked me up. And my other favorite is even knowing how it ends, my heart always swells with happiness to see it
when I was little. (NO IM NOT A LITTLE KID MY PFP IS ONE I TOOK IN 4TH GRADE) I always wondered what they thought when everything was gone and what made them decide to go out and sing. It never really crossed my mind that they actually didn't even notice. And did Cindy Lou know it was the Grinch and just didn't tell because she knew we would come back? It always confused me
I always assumed that Cindy (both in the book and the original cartoon) was too young to know who he was; considering he supposedly never really left his cave, chances are that she either didn't know what he looked like or was never told about him because everyone in Whoville probably didn't remember him either. On an unrelated note, why did the Grinch steal this video's thumbnail? Did RUclips hold Max for ransom until he went through with it?
Watch the Chuck Jones version for the quality Watch the Jim Carrey version for the memes Watch the Benedict Cumberbatch version for Benedict Cumberbatch
I was disappointed in Benedict Cumberbatch version because we didn't even have an updated version of Where Are You Christmas? I blame Tyler The Creator for that
No it can work. The problem is they dont CARE if it works or not. It would be no different here in my opinion. If Seuss and the creators of this animated movie didn't care as much as they did it would be terrible to. All comes down to care and a desire to create something great.
Samson and Sally: Song of the Whales. Whales being suffocated, harpooned, poisoned.... Heck, there is an octopus that bludgeons a fish to death with a rock before biting its head off.
Oh geez... Just looked it up. I swear I remember that film! It scared the shit out of me as a kid!! Hard to believe my parents let me watch it, with how easily scared I was.
@@LaserMaster95 I remember I was so little that I always had to run out of the room during the scene where Moby Dick is getting harpooned with the blood, then I would go back and watch the rest. It was scary, but I was fascinated by it.
@@Megan-zp2rb Ugghh... Yeah, I remember that part. That was incredibly gruesome for a kids movie. It bothered me a lot and I just felt something was... wrong. Even though as a kid I didn't fully understand things. I knew I experienced some movie similar to Watership Down as a kid, but I couldn't remember the title until now.
My favorite part is when he says, "I must find some way to keep Christmas from coming!" I mean, zooming in on his face, the animation, the music, those 5 seconds are animation perfection.
What always baffled me is how much amazing art detail, and story movies can be on a really small budget; but on a much higher budget a better adaptation usually falls flat. You would think a better budget means better detail and better story. Another great movie with the Grinch is Holloween is Grinch night. I honestly think Doug you would enjoy it. I'm surprised it's not aired on Holloween anymore. I remember it was aired on the 13 days of Holloween on ABC years ago. There's also a reason for the color transformation at the end of the film. It's for the viewer to feel more connected to the Grinch without diverting your eyes away. It's an art style not used very often anymore in 2d animation. At least from what I've seen lately. My art teacher from the Maryland hall in Annapolis MD taught that.
I remember when I was little and me and my parents would watch this every year. I used to sing the song the Whos sing when the scene started. I will always love this version.
14:11 One detail i wish the other versions included is the Grinch’s eyes. All version get the yellow and menacing eyes when he’s stealing Christmas, but only this version has his eyes switch to a comforting blue to show that his heart is growing. It’s such a small detail but it really helps the story and I wish they would’ve used it for other versions
I'm 28 yo but I watched the Jim Carrey one first when I was a kid, so when I watched this one a few years later the ending really struck me not only as much much better but really wholesome.
The original Grinch cartoon is one of my all-time favorites! Part of what I love about it is that it's about the REAL spirit of Christmas. I've seen it almost every year since it first aired. I still get a leap in my heart and my eyes get moist when the star rises from the circle of Whos. (I even recorded the Grinch song on my younger brother's and my childhood reel to reel tape recorder back when one was stuck with whatever channel and time the networks showed things.) The Grinch's evil smile is still my ideal for evil smiles.
I don't remember what my thought process was as a child, but I can say now that my focus is definitely more on the Whos embracing Christmas without any trees, presents, etc. The ending always makes me choke up with how beautifully done it is, especially the reprise of the Whos song. This truly is a classic, and I loved seeing you talk about it. Also, yes, the Whos acting like a gate for the Grinch to come through at the end is hilarious. Makes me laugh every time.
I grew up watching this. The first time I watched it was when I was about 4 months old. I wasn't all that concerned about the moral at that point. I watch it every year at Christmas, sometimes more than once and I enjoy it every single time. Right before I watch it, I always worry that I'll have grown out of it, and that it won't be as good as I remember, but I'm always proven wrong. It is every bit as amazing as it was when I first watched it.
@@drakeware655 It's not an original episode. It's from a bunch of episodes made by a guy named Gene Deitch. They have weird plots and weird sound effects. I still like some of them though. I can tell you the plot if you want.
watching this for the first time as a kid, i didn't see it coming. i didn't think the grinch was gonna get away with it, like i was thinking "well something has to happen to make it all ok!" but i didn't *know* what was gonna happen. and when the Whos came out and started singing i was more relieved than surprised. just filled with warmness and a feeling of "that makes sense". I will watch this every christmas 'till my last.
@@ArmiGirl90 I do remember seeing this when I was little, and also I saw a trailer for it. I never saw it as dark, I saw it as bit odd but i did like it.
Love this version. It is simple and gets to the point rather than who's being the villains and cast out the Grinch. Here no villain but a lesson and they don't fear him but accepted.

I always love your reviews but I have been anticipating hearing you talk about the actually GOOD Grinch, and I was not dissapointed!
While I do like the Jim Carrey version, this one will always be the best.
I also enjoyed the Jim Carrey one (especially the scene where his heart grew three sizes and yeah, that shit would be painful as hell), but this is the version I grew up with as a child, and thus it's always the first one that comes to mind for me.
Fai enough but I love Jim Carrey's version
hah
Honestly I feel the Jim Carrey version would have been better if the focus was just Cindy showing how nice Christmas is and the Grinch just not buying it to the point he does steal it. Some of the extra elements like the disgruntled town, the mayor, the girlfriend, and the backstory do feel more unnecessary as Doug mentioned and it would have probably been more impactful if the Town already knew the meaning and the Relationship with Cindy was the focus, especially since that was the best addition to the story the film had and made for the best interactions with her genuine innocence vs the Grinch’s relatable bitterness
@@danmenard6917 it was way better than that stupid Elf crap with will ferrell
Special note: Tony the Tigers voice actor sung 'Your a Mean one...Mr. Grinch'! He also sung some of the songs in Rankin Bass' The Hobbit!
And he even appeared in some Disney properties like “Sword in the Stone”
The change when his eyes go from red to blue is the most magical moment for me.
Has Doug ever done a tour of all the pictures on his walls? I'd love to see that
The more I watch Doug's Dark Toon episodes, the more I think they're his very favorites to review. He takes such pleasure in dissecting every minute detail of them, and relishing the scary moments. With Dark Toons, Doug's like a kid going through a candy shop with wonderment over all the things to choose. (Keep doing them, Doug, because they'll always have a delighted audience!)
What a joy that weird Grinch musical was.
I fell asleep on it lmao
@Black Ninja Matthew Morrison played the Grinch and it aired last night (12/9/20) on NBC
@Black Ninja yeah it was...interesting
OMG I watched it and it was amazing
@@c.w.r.794 Ohhh myyyyy gawdddd that's trasshhh lmao
Thanks, Doug, that was a wonderful look at an amazing tv special. My very favorite part of HTGSC is that moment when the Grinch is being dragged toward the cliff edge and things look hopeless, and then Karloff’s voice gently says, “And what happened then...well, in Whoville they say...”
Tears me up every time. :)
I wouldn't call this a dark toon, but it sure is a staple of the holidays!
Yes definitely isn't a darl toon
@@ohN0thing Uh no DARL toon. Ur speeling is trash bruh
Edit: ok what speeling
Exactly: its not scary
The only dark things in this, are some of the faces the grinch makes.
Whenever I ride on a sled I always think of the music that's played when Grinch and Max are riding down the mountain.
You seriously have to do MGM's "Peace on Earth" this month!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait to see Doug's (NC's) reaction to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas! - The Musical."
God, I can’t remember when I first saw this. My brother is 5 years older and my parents adore it so it’s just always been there.
What I liked was the fact that when he's doing the theft part he went to the point of even stealing the furniture. He left a bare sitting room and and kitchen, but he left the ice box and cupboards just to drive the point home.
Doug needs to do a Nostalgia Critic episode of The Grinch musical next week.
Another instalment of Doug being an adorable animation nerd!
I like how no one is running around crazy and there's no pop culture in it. I also just LOVE how the narrator talks. He is just so wonderful. I dont remember what I was thinking while watching this though.
I first saw this at five y/o and I was mortified until the Grinch turned. Absolute legendary Cartoon!
My favorite part is when he picks up that sled over his head in his heart filled triumph. It's an incredible climax to resolve his recent misdeeds. His heart made him super strong like Superman, and nothing could stop him from doing the right thing from now on
Went from being a mysterious angry person to screaming "I'm an idiot" in a cave and somehow the cave answered back.
And my other favorite is even knowing how it ends, my heart always swells with happiness to see it
One of the greatest Christmas classics out there
Thank you it's not a dark toon
Nostalgia critic u are so funny I don’t know why people be hating on you u are so cool and funny
when I was little.
I have no idea how I felt the first time I saw this. I can't remember a time that I haven't seen this. Its been a part of my life for it's entirety.
When a cat or dog has super furry paws, I always call that "Grinch feet"
That's adorable and hilarious. XD
The grinch’s smiles was the darkest thing I have ever seen
The “wish you were here” Wiley Coyote picture in the background is amazing XD
Watch the Chuck Jones version for the quality
Watch the Jim Carrey version for the memes
Watch the Benedict Cumberbatch version for Benedict Cumberbatch
Memes are shit.
Cumberbatch sounding like Doctor Venture.
You don't even hear Benedict's real voice in the Grinch movie, which defeats the whole purpose.
Who hell is jimm carrey his name is hank ****face
I was disappointed in Benedict Cumberbatch version because we didn't even have an updated version of Where Are You Christmas? I blame Tyler The Creator for that
The Grinch doesn’t work outside of the book and OG cartoon. They need to give up on it.
Apparently Universal didn't get the memo.
No it can work. The problem is they dont CARE if it works or not. It would be no different here in my opinion. If Seuss and the creators of this animated movie didn't care as much as they did it would be terrible to. All comes down to care and a desire to create something great.
@@DarkNight3603 yeah just watch the Illumination Grinch review for Doug making that exact point
But it's so marketable tho
You forgot the Halloween special.
Samson and Sally: Song of the Whales. Whales being suffocated, harpooned, poisoned.... Heck, there is an octopus that bludgeons a fish to death with a rock before biting its head off.
Lord.
Holy shit.
My favorite part is the whole sequence of the Grinch and Max taking the sley down the mountain.
My favorite part is when he says, "I must find some way to keep Christmas from coming!" I mean, zooming in on his face, the animation, the music, those 5 seconds are animation perfection.
My favorite part is when he realizes maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more! I cry.
I don't know if I have a favorite part, but the ending always makes me cry.
This is easily my favorite Christmas special. I watch it every year.
My favorite are the lyrics to the song. I seriously think the writing process was just, how many insults can we jam in fifteen minutes? Yes.
I remember when I was little and me and my parents would watch this every year. I used to sing the song the Whos sing when the scene started. I will always love this version.
Betty Boop: Minnie the Moocher
Betty Boop: The Old Man of the Mountain
Super Friends: The Fear
Pretty please!!!
I'm not going to lie, this is the most excited I've ever been by a video title on this channel.
I had no idea who Maurice Noble was til you brought him up here, in Bugs Bunny vs Dracula and other Chuck Jones creations! Thanks!!
I'm 28 yo but I watched the Jim Carrey one first when I was a kid, so when I watched this one a few years later the ending really struck me not only as much much better but really wholesome.
I also love how he steals the ice cubes XD LOLF
I watched it yesterday. It gets better every year. God bless Boris Karloff.
The Real Ghostbusters: "The Boogieman Cometh"
I don't remember what my thought process was as a child, but I can say now that my focus is definitely more on the Whos embracing Christmas without any trees, presents, etc. The ending always makes me choke up with how beautifully done it is, especially the reprise of the Whos song. This truly is a classic, and I loved seeing you talk about it.
Also, yes, the Whos acting like a gate for the Grinch to come through at the end is hilarious. Makes me laugh every time.
Honestly I've seen this so many times I can't remember a time not knowing the story/ending. It's just so ingrained with my childhood.
Next Dark Toons suggestions: Tom and Jerry "Buddies Thicker Than Water".
It’s not really that dark but I think Doug can make a video about it.
I don't think I've ever heard of that episode. What's it about?
That one legitimately creeped me out. Though the Gene Deitch era is kind of unsettling by itself.
@@drakeware655 It's not an original episode. It's from a bunch of episodes made by a guy named Gene Deitch. They have weird plots and weird sound effects. I still like some of them though. I can tell you the plot if you want.
@@pundertalefan4391 Sure. Tell me
The first time I can remember seeing it was at 6 years old and my favorite part was the "You're a mean one, Mister Grinch" song
Does this mean you'll be doing a Nostalgia Critic episode about the Grinch musical NBC aired this year in 2021?
@Black Ninja Yep....and it was WEIRD
@@daniellavaladez7820 didn’t watch it myself but my uncle said he watched the first two songs and quit.

I love how Doug just talks about the different aspects of these toons that make them pretty great :)
No matter how many versions of the Grinch filmmakers do in the future, this will always be my favourite version of The Grinch aside from the book
watching this for the first time as a kid, i didn't see it coming. i didn't think the grinch was gonna get away with it, like i was thinking "well something has to happen to make it all ok!" but i didn't *know* what was gonna happen. and when the Whos came out and started singing i was more relieved than surprised. just filled with warmness and a feeling of "that makes sense". I will watch this every christmas 'till my last.
I love this version
I love this cartoon so much! The story, the animation is so great!
My dad tells me that when I was really little, I used to cry when the Grinch gave the presents back.
Awww. So cute. :03
Kind of twisted yet charming and gets me into Christmas every December
Most people: ahhhh the original grinch that was cute!
Doug: Dark Cartoon talk anyone?
Everyone: wait this was dark?
Yeah, this is my all-time favorite Christmas special.
Ikr! This wasn’t dark!
Next dark toon should be Steven Universe: Nightmare Hospital
Or even just the entirity of
Steven Universe: Future
Off. Good luck
One of my favorite parts is the whimsical, slapstick sled ride down the hill into Whoville. I love that scene.
