I think Grinch is so expressive because it's a part of his childhood trauma. He is annoying because he is trying to escape from the real world. He's trying not to feel because one day ruined everything for him
I visited Universal Studios in Hollywood at the end of 1999 where I got to see some of the set pieces from this film. The set pieces looked better in person and were far more colorful in real life then the film makes them appear. I was really excited when this film came out because this was the first film that I ever saw the set for while it was still being made.
It was from the beginning of the era where Hollywood wanted to humanize iconic movie villains, even though there's an animated prequel to The Grinch that shows that he's just some kind of evil monster.
To me this will always be my favorite version, don't get me wrong the original is awesome so bright and colorful and Boris Karloff narration is an all time classic. However this movie is what got me into watching the original Grinch cartoon.
Ahh yes, Jim Carrey. The OTHER Canadian actor in a Dr. Seuss movie. Also I wonder why he also voiced Horton in Horton Hears A Who. Also the little girl playing Sidney Loo Who is the lead singer of The Pretty Reckless.
Interesting behind the scenes fact: there is a photo of Eddie Murphy as his Sherman Klump character with Jim Carrey in his grinch costume on the set of Grinch. Grinch was probably being shot close to where Nutty Professor 2 was shooting; given that they're universal movies and produced by Imagine Entertainment. Plus the fact Rick Baker was the makeup artist for both films.
Its weird to rethink my impression of this when i remember seeing this and the book as a kid and seeing them as good in their own right for different reasons. This film was kind of my first introduction to this kind of cynical humour, and it wouldnt have worked as well if the town wasnt also a source of that cynicism, both in terms of having something to learn too and the way its not exactly magical looking but still feels otherworldly, like the urban version of the drawings
How about they do a new fan scription like what if Martha Mae ran away with the grinch to go and live up Mount crumpet, and she actually stood up to the bullies who bullied the grinch, so can you imagine a movie if she hated Christmas to?

I watched all three last Yule with the wife and ended up liking this one now more then when it came out. The explosion felt more like it was joking about movies having an explosion, and I don't feel like the the colors were dull or blurred, but that might be a difference in the version being streamed and modern screens. Also saw the CG one for the first time and it was better then I expected. I suppose I was in a better mood throughout this holiday season, so that might have helped too.

Heck, those books would probably be rated PG if they were given film ratings, especially The Butter Battle Book.
How do you feel about The Grinch after all these years? Like it? Dislike it? Middle of the road?
