In this week’s episode, we discuss being a lazy photographer and a trap that should be avoided. It's easy to fall into a routine or a certain way of doing things, but if you're not careful, it can suffocate your creativity and progression in photography. I've been heavily into landscape photography for the past 9 years, but 7 of those years were spent entrenched in this trap. And, I firmly believe that if had known what was happening back then, I would have easily been able to correct this and progress much quicker. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark

“…as long as you have a camera in hand..”. So true! I’m just getting back to photography after about a 15-20 year break and feel like I’ve forgotten everything. I started with film and did make the switch to digital when my camera equipment was stolen but never got back to the experiments I did when I shot film. I’m looking forward to getting to know my current camera better and getting back out with planned shoots!

Over fifty years ago I was a professional event photographer. I put the camera down for several decades, but once I retired, I began with mirrorless. I too enjoy landscape photography and I generally try to create photo essays which I post on my blog. One of my most favorite type of pictures include serendipity, i.e. a section of drainpipe with a graffiti smiley face surrounded by a flowering weed. Thanks for all your inspiration.

Hi Mark, been taking pix since about 1958 when my dad taught me B&W darkroom work when I was 8. Was a yearbook photog in high school, with a rig consisting of a Kodak Retina 35mm folding camera with an outboard rangefinder in the flash shoe and a tiny light meter in a second flash shoe I epoxied on top of the rangefinder.
Bought a Canon FT SLR in 1968 as I graduated high school and used that through college with an 85mm f/1.8 lens. Taught myself color printing in the seventies when home paper and chemistry became available, but put down my camera in the late 1990s as my young daughter hated being photographed. Took up landscape (waterscape?) photography around 2003 as I became engaged to a painter after my wife died (and my daughter decided she wanted me to find her a new mom). Shifted to digital SLRs shortly after, as it gave me control of the whole process.
Just went mirrorless this summer with the R7 and I'm in love again. After decades of my DSLRs getting bigger and heavier with each upgrade, I'm now in a rig that's actually smaller than my old film SLR while many times as capable, and with controls that I can customize to make it feel like my old FT. (Fortunately, my artist wife is delighted with her photographer protege.)
And yes, I've found myself shooting new kinds of things. While I had gotten focused on water surfaces after finding folks liked that kind of picture, I'm now shooting anything that comes in front of me, even experimenting with birds in flight!

I am at the stage of getting brave enough to realize and explore photographs that make me happy; also to realize that it is the process of photography and not just the photograph that I love about photography. Oh, I am well beyond 7+ years, but I didn't really start taking photos for myself until I retired from working full-time. I have found that my photographic journey has changed over the years; it's not that I missed the target, but that that target keeps moving. Really there is no target, just following your heart.

I purchased a used box camera at a thrift store 59 years ago when I was eight. I have been photographing every since. I am a sports and news photographer. I started watching your channel because I am nearing retirement age and am looking at expanding my photographic horizons. For example, we only use photoshop at work and not lightroom because the corporation does not want to pay for hard drives to store the images and catalog on for lightroom. I also started looking at several different photographers feeds to see if I would ever want to start my own photography channel. Appreciate your straight forward approach to teaching.

7+ years and I am doing something similar to what you’re talking about……stepping out of my comfort zone and into what I call my “experimentation” zone - playing with ICM and creating abstracts - which is something I’ve never done and also the “intimate” landscape……rather than the grand scene finding those special details. I’m finding I had “writers block” so to speak with my photography and I wasn’t even feeling much inspiration to go out and shoot. These new techniques are offering me the inspiration that I was missing. Thx again for a great video!

I've been at it for 4 years now. I started with birds and landscapes, then found I love waterfalls. Here in southern Minnesota we've had two years of drought and dry waterfalls, so I've really enjoyed chasing aurora borealis and doing star trails. I still do my majority of photos with wildlife, which is great because the deer rut is on right now, and bald eagle season will kick off in January here. Like you, I've gotten away from the grand wide landscapes and do much more with the 100-400. One of my favorite autumn photos this year was of across this large valley where a road cut through the trees. It was taken at 600mm and probably at least 2 miles away.

1-2 years into this journey as a hobby. Started with a repairable Canon T2i that just needed about 20 minutes of attention with a screwdriver and began snapping shots: pets, wildlife, landscapes, and some I guess would be considered abstract. I basically take pictures of what I like to see, entirely for myself. Your videos about lens choices, composition, editing and storytelling have been extremely helpful to me. I came away from a recent Yellowstone trip with a few lucky shots, a few successful landscape images and 1-2 that others have told me look like they belong in an art show.

The 3 months I was in the Western US this summer cumulated my fourth year. Previously I would shoot landscapes OR wildlife. It quickly dawned on me I had 1-2 million photos of bison and a bunch of VISTAS. DUH. This all works better together so I began to look for wildlife "in context." My percentage of keepers was much higher, wild-angle and telephoto. Also, I was much more particular about light. I think this all was a major improvement in my work.

I’m in my second year and I will try every type and genre of photography I can. Doing so has made me look at things completely differently and it has expanded my creativity. Sometimes things work and sometimes they fail but unless you give them a go you will never know. The beauty of photography I believe is that it doesn’t cost anything to make mistakes, it’s what you learn from making them and putting them right that matters. When you get things right it is so rewarding. There is too much going on around us to religiously stick to one type of photography, give anything a try when the opportunity arises is my motto 😉

My big challenge is the Dynamic Range vs Focus Stacking to try get the complete landscape scene in Focus. My 2nd problem I was having was cropping in too close. I recently watched a video on capturing more foreground, and leading lines and using the mountains and sunsets as the background and not the Main Hero of the Photo. I hope this is what you were looking for?

I have been involved in photography since around '93, gosh that's almost 30 years. I have never truly gone professional. I consider myself a super hobbyist. My problem is I have too many interest, like landscape, streetphotography, macro, portrait, wildlife, and so on... I agree with you about getting out of your comfort zone... it is much easer to do these days with digital photography. Right now one of my pet projects is the 50mm, I have been told by several people how the "nifty fifty" is boring to shoot with, my goal is to see if that is true... or if I can really find interesting things to shoot with the 50. Love your stuff and I always look for little nuggets you might find. I love the community of photographers that are willing to share their findings.

Shooting multiple genres I don't always change lenses especially when set up with a long lens, picked an area apart with a 600mm while birding, the light becomes the major player and I honestly think telephoto and super telephoto lenses could see a lot more use in landscape photography.

Great video. I’ve been into photography since I was perhaps 10 years old. So that would be 40 years of photographic experience behind the shutter now. Digital changed everything. From how we process images, make prints and all the magical things that we can do with photoshop that were never possible in the film days. Digital changed a great number of things but not the core concepts and techniques that one needs to make a great photograph. Keep making your wonderful videos, my wife who is not a photographer enjoys your videos as do I and is always amazed at all the things that get taken into consideration when taking the image. About sesven years, Mark! This may be the most worthwhile video ever - instead of focusing on a particular POV or technique, this shows that at any given moment or where we are in our development we have the opportunity to come up with a great creative image, so encouraging ~ Thanks!

I was a ‘photographer’ in high school 30+ years ago and only picked the camera back up again 2 years ago. Boy has digital changed the genre, I was used to rolling my own film (mostly b & w) and developing and printing my own images. Every image was precious then, but today “they’re just pixels”!!

A great vid and that's why I come here. I'm getting to be an old guy and don't do the fancy tech stuff that I barely learned anyway. Just the basics these days. But the challenge of getting a good shot, be it landscape or some minimalist thing is still there. I think your post is so on the money.

I’m not a pro, I’m a rail enthusiast and I do lots of railway photography. I mainly use modest wide angle lenses as they fit in 3/4 photos of trains and station photos. Hearing you mention using a telephoto lenses on landscape photography made me think of some train photos taken with a telephoto lens. The train looks bunched up and is never something I’ve tried but they look good in a distance shot with the afternoon sun.

5 years in (started with a pocket camera). This year picked up a 17-40 f/4 and then a 16-35 f/2.8. Yes, I was obsessed with wide angle lens for most of the summer. Finally, I got some sense back in my head and now my go-to lens is the 24-105 f/4. I do like using the 16-35 f/2.8 at 35mm for macro shots. the f/4 isn't the same (not as good) as f/2.8 for background blurriness. I shoot mainly in forest areas, no mountains.

Hello Mark..I love photography. It’s been a hobby for over 30 years.
Sadly though having a full time job and career all those years, hasn’t allowed much time for photography.
But now that I’m getting older and have more time. I’m dedicating more time to my photography.
It’s exciting and it’s also exactly why I watch your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I have been doing photography for many decades, primarily in film. There was an unfortunate hiatus for about 10 years but have now jumped into the digital age in the last 1-2 years. I thought it would be like riding a bike and I would pick things up quickly, but that has not been the case. It has been more like starting from scratch. I agree that challenging oneself with new types of photography is great. I have recently tried doing some cityscape shots and each time I go out I learn something new about our local city and about my relationship with my camera. Really enjoy your videos in all aspects. Your tutelage has helped me immensely. Thanks.

After many years of travel photography with an SLR, I became more serious about photography when I switched to digital twenty years ago and learned post-processing skills. Now I do “local photography” - gardens, woodlands, wetlands, wildlife and an occasional automobile meet-up. This takes me from macro to telephoto. Thanks for the good ideas on more ways to expand!

Mark, love your channel. Started photography in the 80's Minolta film camera shooting my children sports, family events, vacations and landscape. My equipment was stolen when digital cameras started to hit the scene. Knew film was on the way out and digital was the new technology but not advanced enough to my liking so gave up photography until the Nikon D70 arrived. I love many subjects to shoot, from travel, landscape in USA national parks, grandchildren, sports and abstract. Hardly an expert photographer just trying to get better every time I shoot. Still make plenty of mistakes. That is what I love about photography it seems like your always learning be it a new camera or new software.....preservation of memories.

Totally agree Mark, have just started using my telephoto more (actually the lens I use for bird photography) to explore more compressed and localised compositions. I have bought and sold so many wide angle lenses over the years because I rarely felt I could get an image I was happy with as opposed to the standard 24-120mm and telephoto. You will enjoy the macro lens, it opens up many opportunities for exploration, the hardest thing is remembering to 'think tiny' not just 'think close up'. Enjoy. Hi Mark. I recovered my interest in photography 12 years ago while recovering from cancer, discovering a love of close ups of the abstract images in the bark of Australian indigenous trees. Really appreciated this video. I’m actually more into close ups of nature than I am of wide angle landscapes along with ICM and impressionist type photography. But I still get a lot out if your videos. I was intrigued by your divided landscape images. They reminded me of a concept called the “edge effect”. There’s a podcast on the topic on the Hidden Brain podcast which you might appreciate.

Photographed while studying architecture in Europe the early 80s. Loved my Pentax manual camera. Did not shoot hardly at all in the 90s. Missed it. Picked up a Sony NEX 3, when it was released, and upgraded to an a6000 and a few more when it was released. Given my real work schedule was 10 hours per day most days, my picture taking was limited to off hours while traveling and on weekends. Fortunately, my job was engineering 3D graphics and imaging systems. In fact, I am largely responsible for graphics hardware on cell phones, and got to work with the likes of Sony and Adobe on their projects. Retired and my wife bought me an A7RIV a couple years ago. Since then you’d be lucky to pry the camera out of my hands (she probably regrets that purchase, but I love her for it). While having a way more than average understanding of the technology, I finally get to exercise the other half of my brain. Thank you for your videos, they have been very inspirational and informative. If I had to put a number on it, I’d rate my experience is 4 years.

I have considered "outdoor" photography my singular hobby since high school. For me that would be 56 year. It has been the last 5 years that I have devoted considerable time, effort, and money to take my landscape photography to a higher level. I agree with and parallel your experience with trying to capture the grand landscape. I have had some mixed success but have much more to learn. I have also experimented with macro-ish photography in the past but worry that it gets too esoteric. I have always struggled taking "abstract" photographs as I feel I lack a fundimental grounding in abstract art. I continue to enjoy and learn from your video and be inspired by your suggestion to move beyond ones comfort zone. Thank you.

I had cheap film cameras over the years for general purpose photos like birthday parties, events and such. I bought a little digital pocket camera about 12 years ago for vacation pics and for pics of the kids. I didn't really get into photography until 5 years ago when I acquired my first DSLR. I'm on my 3rd body now. The first lens I bought was a Canon nifty fifty because it was cheap and everyone says that you should get one. I rarely use my Canon because I shoot with a Nikon now. I have a wide angle lens for both but I also have a 24-70, a 70-200, a 20mm, and a 105 macro. I'm waiting on the new 200-600 to come out. Lenses are tools just like the camera itself is. Pick the right focal length for the situation. Be creative and try different things. If you ever get bored or feel burned out with landscape, try macro. It's similar to landscape and portrait photography (especially with insects). And it's something you can do inside of the weather is bad.

I'm in my 6th year as a passionate hobbyist photographer. Started off with all macro, then grand landscapes and now it has morphed into a combination of intimate scenes, abstracts and good old fashioned grand landscapes! There was one night at Out of Oregon when the sky and foreground was so amazing I never took my wide angle lens off and then another night when I challenged myself to only use my telephoto lens the whole night. Very much enjoyed learning from you and Eric Bennett in Oregon!

Thank you for the videos Mark, new subscriber and have been catching up with your older content. Photography has been a hobby for, good grief, 60 years. First pictures for high school in the late 50’s. Still have my first SLR, a Minolta SR1. It went with me to Korea in 1962, and off and on until the DSLR came along. Shoot local sport car tracks, landscapes, macro, birds. Master of none however. Mirrorless now, and BW film with a 70’s film SLR.

Hey Mark, interesting video that makes one rethink what makes our eyes dance? I have been behind a lens for over 50 years and I still catch myself getting in a rut. When I get stagnant I adventure into a different style of photography. In the last couple of years I went from landscapes to birding to surfers and recently covering live bands. All very different styles with different equipment and lighting situations to figure out. About a decade ago I realized zoom lens have made me a bit "lazy" and I found my compositional eye was lacking. Now I will go out a few times a month with only a fixed 24mm or 50mm and walk the town or beach and create images. This keeps my eyes and mind fresh and reminds me of a quote from Ansel Adams, “You don't take a photograph, you make it.” Thanks for all the great presentations!

I was wondering when you'd mention Sarah Marino, LOL! You're singing her song 🙂. Where am I in my photographic journey? 10 years of mostly casual attention to it, and one year (since Out of Chicago Botanic in 2021) of being committed and serious. My trajectory has been the opposite of yours, Mark - I started with macro, added small scenes, ICM, and abstract, expanded from nature to architecture (I'm now just as happy photoing in downtown Chicago as I am in a dahlia trial garden) and have done almost no grand landscape photography. My stretch WAY out of my comfort zone is coming in January when I'm going to a Death Valley landscape photography workshop led by TJ Thorne and Alex Noriega. I'm really excited about it and curious to see what evolves from it. Love your landscape divided images! Thanks for an inspiring message and reminder to keep challenging ourselves.

Great video. I’ve been interested in photography since I was very young but it it was always in the background with other things in my life. I’ve been retired for 10 years and I’ve spent a lot more time shooting and learning since then. I also found that shooting the more intimate landscape images is more satisfying than the grand view. I think one reason is that it has become much more difficult to find locations that haven’t been shot to death and thus it is more difficult to create a new image. With the advent of social media and good quality cell phone cameras we are literally bombarded. You are certainly in good company- I attended a seminar by Art Wolfe on shooting small scale abstracts and immediately recognized the value of it. Thanks for all of your videos- I find them helpful and engaging.

Usually i want to capture textures, colors, and things not normally scene or noticed but still natural so i like macro, telephoto, and long exposure photography. But i also do lots of landscapes and flowers. It's requires switching lenses a lot but i think It's worth it.

I am 1-2 years into my photography hobby and, as you say, I am still on the steep bit of the learning curve. I have found RUclips a fantastic source of information and your channel was, I think, one of the first one or two that I followed. I have just purchased a new camera, moving from an APSC DSLR to a full-frame mirrorless and I spend a lot of time 24-70mm - so yet to get to the telephoto bit.
