IKR I have mixed feelings about the movie itself but my favorite thing about Princess and the Frog is Tiana and Charlotte being best friends. I'm all for girls supporting girls, especially when they're different ethnicity and or social class, they still love each other. Like, Charlotte was rich, blond,e and wore a lot of showy pink dresses, but she didn't act like the stereotypic mean girl.

I understand, but in order to talk about the past, you also need to talk about the dark and the bad that came in with those time periods.
Tiana's story is in Louisiana, a Southern state, in the 1920s when Jim Crow was still very big.
They still have to add a believable element into it. They still needed a conflict that would have not only worked with her story but would have also probably been very common in the time period Tiana lived.
They can't gloss over it like racism still never happened and still doesn't happen.
That's the double edged sword when talking about non-white people and casting them as characters in your story and having them be the main characters. On one hand, if you talk about the issues at the time, you could still be labeled as racist. Meanwhile, you could be seen as acting as if nothing happened if you gloss over it and act like racism never existed.
It's like no matter whether or not you add in culturally and ethnically and racially diverse characters, there's still going to be a group of people that's upset, whether you add in the POC characters or not.

    • @ninjagirl226
      @ninjagirl226 6 месяцев назад +418

@@gracegallimore4580Oh sweet summer child, the really bad stuff went right over your head didn’t it.
A lot of the bad stuff is the slur in one of the characters names. People still use it a lot in modern times but it’s so insulting and a reminder of constant abuse people suffered. It’s not a racist comment because I’m often called it despite being white but the character in the movie that’s called this is black.
Then you have the voodoo element which again not linked to race but it’s a closed religion and they are very very protective of it and don’t like it being used in media in a negative light, which it is by Facilier. They actually say you can’t display it without permission from the community. Or that’s what I’ve been hearing not part of that community but apparently they’ve been upset for years and are going after Hazbin Hotel for this now.

Watch Princess Sheherazade, an old french studio made series based on the 1001 Nights who no one seems to know with the main character being a major tribute to princess Scheherazade who was the storyteller of the 1001 Night stories. It's a series made by french so obviously it's not made by the middle east, but as a kid it was so much more of a welcoming feeling of a space than what Alladin ever was as an already ostariced mixed muslim kid in a highly white & christian normalized and enforced environment. The original version was almost the same as the book the story was based on-as Disney wanted it that way. Disney is famous for ignoring the criticisms of their employees and telling them to do it the way they want it. When it was finally pointed out to Disney how problematic the version they were asking for, they relented and let the leads for the movie change the story. Don't blame those two, blame the Disney execs-the ones who never listened to these two guys in the first place when they voiced other concerns about problematic issues in other films. They don't get the final say, Disney execs did. The two of them are actually good guys who fought for a lot of good things. If I recall correctly, they were the ones who pushed to do a film with a black female lead, and then had to deal with certain Disney execs pushing to keep it close to the book because they had paid for the rights to the story and by gosh were they going to use that story.
I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones who started spreading the details of the film or pushed to get the information out there, knowing there would be backlash and that backlash would be the only thing to change the execs minds and save the project.

Honestly, I couldn't think of a better story for Disney's 2D animation to go out with a bang on. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more 2D Disney movies be made, but there's just something so special about The Princess and the Frog. The rich Southern USA culture, Tiana's character growth away from something generally considered to be a "good thing" (working your absolute hardest for your dream) and to being content with what she has, and the wholesome character relationships; they all come together for an incredibly movie, and an incredible example of Disney magic. Honestly? I often find it patronizing when the girl of a romance is the hard-working, highly skilled, and goal-driven one who carries the incompetent boy; BUT The Princess and the Frog actually does it right. Tiana's father taught her to work hard for her dreams, but also what true familial love was. She had to work hard, especially with civil inequalities. This hard work naturally drove her to develop skill-wise and as a mature person. Prince Naveen was a spoiled kid who had everything handed to him, but actually admitted it and made an effort to change for Tiana when he fell in love with her as a person (rather than her looks).
The characters were so well-ritten, and came together for wonderful story-building in organic and heart-warming ways.
Give us more of this, Disney. Not Wish's BS.

The literal only similarity between the two is that the princess in question kissing the frog prince, turned her into a frog like that’s the only similarity the setting is different. The characters are different why the characters are frogs are different. Basically that is literally the only concept that the same which was someone is pointing at the time, because like I actually enjoyed reading the original books, and like it wasn’t like the books at all a great movie on its own but like again the only thing that was the same as the book by Edie Baker was that the princess kissing the frog turn her into a frog too

They had no choice but to struggle if they wanted to make a black character, who would be regularly merchandised and promoted. Because at the end of the day black Americans (especially black American parents) have so much internalized colorism and self-sabotaging mentalities, they can't agree on what they want to see in black representation. And many of the critics aren't ready to autonomously represent themselves, which is the most important thing. You can't hate what you see in the mirror and assume that you will like seeing yourself (the thing you hate) represented by other people. So Tiana's own character design was damned no matter what Disney did with it. Too pale, too light, butt too big, butt too small, etc. When this film was nearing its premiere, I saw scads of forums full of black people fussing about her design and I thought, "Yeah- why would anyone even try to represent black Americans?? There were plenty of black artists working on this film. Even they are being construed as though they had back-stabbed the community."
They should've set their "black princess movie" in a Caribbean area or an African country where the citizens care a lot less about political correctness, and avoided all interactions with the NAACP. The citizens of these areas, assuming they like interactions with outsiders (because some do not), would surely be happy to interact with the team and exhibit their cultures. (Disney has an extensive history of doing cultural research. They messed up with Frog because the NAACP and Oprah profit on stoking racism while claiming to fight it.)
This movie was never supposed to "bring back 2D animation". It wasn't even supposed to be profitable. It only existed because Disney needed a black token for the Disney Princess franchise. They didn't want to acknowledge Kida because Atlantis was systemically under-promoted by the executives to sell the idea that CGI was more profitable. But their CGI wasn't in-the-bag enough, as of 2006, to accomplish the demands of this particular film. If you don't believe me, please remember that 2004 was when Disney made the final culling call as to which existing characters would be permanently included in the Disney Princess franchise. Pocahontas, Mulan, Meg, and Esmeralda all performed poorly in sales (because they were severely under-promoted in merchandise). Meg was immediately cut, but Disney knew they couldn't lose the 3 non-white characters so they only cut Esmeralda from the trio. ROFL They wouldn't even promote Charlotte when the film came out, even if it would've helped with promotion, because they wanted ALL of the focus on Tiana.

Of course racism was everywhere and it was hard to make something of yourself, especially wanting to own a restaurant. But at the same time, it’s important to move away from stereotypes. They could’ve seriously screwed up by making Tiana another generic black “mammy” woman with poor grammar and lack of intelligence like most cartoons used to do. But they gave her goals, ambition, personality, and a really heartwarming journey, which I appreciated
Edit: All I’m saying is that black people in America struggled. And seeing a black woman who was beautiful and talented over come those struggles meant a lot to me to see. I had a reason to root for her in a way I didn’t with other princesses. Disney did a good job with the movie

I'm not sure how much kids think about racism, and having kids movies with connotations of racism might sort of warp their perceptions of each other. The natural response to kids seeing racism is "oh no, that's terrible" unless they're taught by their parents to condone it. Kids are mostly inclusive by default.
If you want to do that then you should set the movie in an idealized future, another planet, or the present. My Little Pony is a good example, because nobody has bigotries like being homophobic in it and the racism allegory took place in the past so they can show everyone in the present loving each other.
If it had been placed in the human world in a real place and at a real time, it would be inappropriate to idealize it. Especially when they allude to racism (the investors talking about Tiana's "background") but then don't handle it properly.

Get Out is a movie that uses slavery parallels to draw comparisons to the well meaning racism of the 21st century to the institutional bigotry of early america. @@nateds7326We all know some degree of American history and that slavery existed.
That being said: fantasy is fantasy, and thus not limited to the real life tragedies real life people endured or committed. You can set a black cast in a fictitious southern setting and erase the slavery element from the equation; you dont have to include it unless you want it to play a part in your story.
The worst part about it _always_ being a part of the story is it pigeonholes black characters into being defined by their relationship to slavery/prejudice/racism - it denies them the opportunity to just be people. Every film depicting white people doesnt have connections to native genocide, slavery, the civil war does it? Its because these events, though historically significant, are not character traits - they are story elements unnecessary to the story being told, so they dont get used. You can literally do the same thing with black, asian, hispanic, native characters - create a character who is, at their core, human. Not a callback to historical tragedies.

Frog is an American slur to refer to the French yet is also seen a lot in British humor a good example being Flushed Away where all the frog assassins are French and do alot of French gags. ‘We surrender!!’
(For New Orleans which has a hefty amount of French influence/heritage that’s kind of an issue to be calling them locally frogs of the bayou kinda deal)
The title of the story was changed multiple times by higher ups then by the directors themselves. The directors having wanted a short title because not only is short titles war catching they’re easily changed for foreign audiences (The Princess and the Frog) is 5 words meaning every title card needs a new 5 words in a new language. The issue is that they didn’t want (The Princess and the Frog) because it’s an extremely long name for a film…. Which was proven as a major marketing point after its release) this was prior to scrolling titles in movie theatres so all anyone saw for a title was ‘The Princes--‘ which automatically made a lot of theatres loose out on money as people were like ‘oh a princess film about princesses and Cinderella stuff’ it lacked appeal of what the story or the movie was about just made the focus that it’s princess shit which is only gonna be applicable to little girls - and because tiana is black : black little girls… )
After princess and the frog not a single other film would start off with the word princess and almost every other film would be 1 word so it’s not cut off in theaters which lack a scroll feature for the titles…. brave tangled frozen all 1 word first word associations - is it PRINCESS NO it’s NOT it’s for anyone
