Lol, double enclosures were another one of those things that when I first learned it I thought, "oh yeah, I'm a jazzer now baby!"
Exactly!! 😂
As a saxophonist, I love that you take examples from Stitt, Rollins etc.
Seems natural since the language was largely developed on sax and trumpet 🙂
This is fantastic. I would definitely be interested in the Barry Harris thing as well.
Thanks! I will keep that in mind 🙂
Yes please do the Barry Harris video! 🙏😊🎸
holy! thanks man. ive been trying to wrap my mind around some jazz lines for a while and you just put a term to something ive been struggling to understand for a while. Right at the end when you explained Pivot arppegios a whole world just clicked for me about finding the jazz sound.
thanks for that.
Good video Jens, I have heard those licks, and have actually used them in ignorance. Makes sense now. Thx
Chromatics really get the point across strongly! A really interesting way to transition and perfect licks!
Fantastic lesson with practical examples. Thank you Jens!
Glad you liked it!
Great content, explained well. One of my favorite thing Jens does is show examples from the greats that illustrate his points.
Thanks Adam! :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Jens!
Glad it was helpful!
Great lesson! Pivot arpeggios just have that sound™ im going for! Trying to get it under my fingers -- thanks!
Haha! Yes the Bebop sound™ 👍
Yes! Please do a video on Barry Harris and chromatics! The video you did about Harris and your studies with him is particularly inspiring. Thanks Jens!
I recently discovered your channel and I think it's one of the best. Professional looking with very clear explanations, thank you so much!

Great video Jens! I also practice diatonic enclosures as much as possible as well. It’s fun mixing them up.
Thanks! Yes, they are solid!
Always love your lessons - and yes would like to see you cover enclosures by Barry Harris
me too! I like how you explain Barry Harris' concepts
Amazing lesson! Thanx! Chromatic notes are important ☺
Absolutely!
Thanks Jens good stuff 👌🎶🎶🎶🎸👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Great lesson! I’ve been working a lot on chromatic enclosures, but when speeding up my improvising I don’t always manage to incorporate them as much as I’d like. But, I am using them able to use them more than I used to, so lessons like this help move me along. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great topic, great lesson
Glad you enjoyed it
Let me know about the Barry Harris video, and check out some Bebop Tricks:

Thank you Fernando!
Hej Jens,
som altid en god og informativ video, mange tak.
Pat Martino uses very few chromatic enclosures in his solo on How Insensitive on the tonic chord dm7/9(if i‘m not completely wrong).
Venlig hilsen og god fornøjelse
Yes, but not the one that I am talking about in this video. He certainly uses other enclosures :)
Yes, please do a video on Barry Harris method for chromatic enclosures.
Thank you, Peter 🙂
The saxophonist James Moody uses that "Pat Martino enclosure" a lot. But sure he got it from Parker. It is a great bebop cliche :D
Great video Jens, I'd love to know more about Barry Harris's system please.
Thank you 🙂
yeah! def do a video on th ebarry melodies :D
I know this is considered common knowledge for a jazz musician, but: you, sir, are a magician :)
Thanks
Thank you very much! 🙂 I really appreciate the support!
Sure, I'd love to hear your take on Barry's m6 system. I would have loved attending one of his masterclass -- they look like so much fun. Love your stuff, too Man. Thank you 🙏🏼
I was talking about his chromatic scale thing, not the 6th dim stuff 🙂
@@JensLarsen I would like to hear that too! 😎
Great lesson. I’d love to have you spend some time on the Barry Harris approach to chromaticism.
Thanks! I will keep that in mind 🙂
Great lesson Jens! I finally dug into diminished scale material and have been combining it with these types of pivot arpeggios with enclosures on dominants - end on the 7th, (or 3rd or 5th) enclose the 13th (half step down) as a start of new arpeggio. Today's lesson provides so much for connecting and utilizing raw material - which is one of the hardest things to learn. Love it.
Thanks Ben! :)
not a jazz guy obviously, but Jerry Garcia was a master of chromaticism. his solo on They Love Each Other from Cornell 77 is ridiculously tasty and full of enclosures
Nice!
great lesson as always Jens! thanks for helping me expand my knowledge
Takk!
Hey Jens! Thank you for all of the awesome content. Is there a bebop scale that you would recommend over an altered dominant chord? I assume the altered scale with a passing tone in the Maj 7th position would work. I am curious how you would approach this.
No, I don't really use Bebop scales, I always found it more powerful to just use chromatic notes as a melodic tool and not some sort of system.
@@JensLarsen That makes sense. I know the system traditionally is used to hit specific chord tones on the strong beats of 1/8th note lines. Alt chords are kind of the exception because you hit notes that are implied to not necessarily be in the chord voicing used. The Altered Scale would hit all of the "outside" notes, but the strong beats would vary since it's got an odd number of tones. That probably is the best choice anyway, but it's fun to ask great players how they think about this stuff. Thank you again! 😀
You should make the Barry Chromatic video concepts
Thanks Juan!
Pivot arpeggios is my take away from this video (in particular...) Thanks Jens 😎
Great that it is useful :)
Me too! I’ve heard the expression, but not had it explained. I also love the idea to combine enclosures and arpeggios. Really practical tip for building authentic jazz language.
The Pat Martino lick is used in the mariokart lick hahaha!
Barry Harris Chromtics would make a great vid Jens
Thanks! I will keep that in mind 🙂
*_BARRY HARRIS YES!_*
So essentially everything which works with a passing note to the target note from below or above can work with an enclosure from both sides? Still a bit confused to create them my self…
Yes, any melody that you can come up with. Just try a few and see if you find one you like? Or use the ones in the video 😁
lately , i really love the progression I6 / #IVdim7/ imin7/ iidim7 descending through all the inversions of drop2 or drop3 becuase you get this nice melodic contour which travels through each obe of the inversions and you can start building that out into a bunch of things.
do you enjoy taking progressions through descending inversions to create long winding descending melodic contours?
ex. C6 / F#dim7/ Dmin7/ Bdim7 that descends through each one of the C6 inversions with a descending melodic contour attached to the drop2 or drop 3 or drop2&4
its just a fun way to come up with long winding melodies.
I tend to focus more on songs and actual progressions, but exercises like that can be fun to do 🙂
I have heard that the strong beats of Jazz are on the 2 and the 4 in 4/4 and I was wondering why you would have chromatics on 2 sometimes.
The strong beats are on 1 and 3. The accents in the groove are on 2 & 4
I have to disagree on Not using an approach tone on the down beat. It really has it's own sound. As long as it resolves to a traget right away, it is very effective IMO. You have to carefull or it can sound incorrect. Just another way o acomplising tension and resolve.
I believe that is also what I say in the video? 🙂
There is section of the video that has a graphic "Failed" about the approach on. No offence intended. I lke the video
@@BarrySahagian at 2:38? You might want to watch that again then 😂
Oh wow… thank you…
Glad it was useful 🙂
Anything Barry Harris would be interesting!
So when you use double chromatic approach, you're pretty much doing like diminished run diminished run on the as it leader in a sense I mean you got to have step hold step have step and then back to you're starting now
I don't really follow what you are saying, but I don't think I agree 🙂
Was driving in the car, speaking to phone. Little jumbled up.
Jist saying, the double chromatic turns out to be 4 first notes of a diminished scale
@@JensLarsen 1/2 step, whole step, 1/2 step (not necessary in order
@@PeterGuyMyrand1 there are 5 half steps next to each other, I don't think it really makes sense to call that a diminished scale with leading notes, it could be a lot of things.
@@JensLarsen sure, I get it. Could be anything. But there is the ome version with the diminision shape. Just saying one version there forms a half, whole half pattern. At 3:52, Doug Renney.
Gotta tell you between your channel and jazzduets there’s two lifetimes of work to get through.. 😓

You are only withholding information because you’re not good enough, right, if you were certain enough you’d share everything lol
Jesus Christ
Bro you’re a literal beginner and you’re criticizing someone with hundreds of hours of free educational content.
You need therapy.
I’m sorry whatever terrible shit that happened to you went down - you didn’t deserve it - but you’re responsible for fixing the damage it did to you.
You’re clearly deeply insecure and try to belittle those you envy in order to obscure that fact from yourself.
Trust me, your insecurity is obvious to everyone else.
I recommend you try to fix it rather than lie to yourself about it.
Agree!
