A fourth faction would be pretty crazy I can't imagine Arrowhead would add another faction so quickly. My theory is that the full illuminate force will arrive through the meridian black hole in a huge event kinda like the dark fluid one a couple months back

Or, we wormholed a planet of very angry, rapidly mutating, fast breeding bugs into their lap and their initial wtf moment didn't go so well.

It would be interesting if the Illuminate encountered a threat and thought 'hey, why bother fighting these guys when we know a bunch of xenophobic and hyper aggressive lunatics back home?'

I doubt the bots would even think of allying with the squids because the squids can't tell the difference between us and Them

although possibly because both races are peace without murder seeking factions as the illuminate were originally peaceful and approached super earth with a peace treaty.

I think you're underestimating the squids here. With a culture and regime change, it's very possible to align despodic empires, and for alliances to change on a dime. As a matter of fact, I bet the Automatons and Illuminate are already allies. Plus, zombie hordes would be hard to make from machines.

if the newer enemy type is something like the flood, all we gotta do is make a weapon that erases all sentient life within a few hundred light years

Or there could be mutated fallen helldivers but I highly doubt the theory of a 4th faction but there could be there's still alot of open space on the war map and it would be cool to see and fight a faction that is bio horror related, good vid man👍

Ngl a "flood" enemy would be kinda boring considering we already have insect swarms, bot legions and alien zombies rushing us

These are my thoughts exactly after I re-enlisted to fight the Illuminate.
Some details vary, but the fact the that the squids aren't interested in occupying any of the territory they successfully invaded reveals that they want to avoid a conventional war with Super Earth. If they were just conducting raids to steal resources or observe our military capabilities, they clearly could have accomplished that without the SEAF detecting them at all. Instead they spend time and effort to transform our citizens into on-demand tactical cannon-fodder. Which would only make sense strategically if they are "Salting the Earth" as they fall back from an advancing enemy force, the resource they need from these raids somehow requires the bodily transmutation of humans en masse, or both. Based on what we know so far; a secret 4th "End Game" Faction pressuring the illuminate to return makes way too much sense and is far too narratively/creatively compelling for it not to be the intention.
I really, really, hope is intentional.
Because its is the most interesting choice they could make moving forward. Not to mention it would directly address the criticism regarding the In-Game Galactic War getting stale or repetitive but would give all their players something to actually look forward to experiencing. I mean they stole the show at the Game of the Year Awards by announcing this last update; proving they should have been nominated for that category. So, my hopes are higher than they should be.
Especially since it seems that so many publishers think its a flex on their competition to have the most expensive flop in their quarterly review without declaring bankruptcy.

I wouldn't be against a flood like or necromorph kind of enemy or even a 4th faction in the future, after all Helldivers 2 is going to become Helldivers 3.

Even now almost every mission i do against the bots I keep seeing blue like beams (if helps, looks like wraiths firing from halo) either in or outside the map. I also always see them in pair, never one, but two

It would be really cool if this were the case as I could also see us getting planets with multiple factions and maybe infighting as a result but a flood like enemy would be retreading the territory already covered by having the terminids in the game

If I'm remembering correctly the illuminate had been driven to desperation after the end of the war and driven to darkness.
We don't know if that just means dark science and ideals, a dark Cthulhu godlike horror, or a more evil race the illuminate have chosen to align with.

I think a fourth faction would have to find a new niche for how it combats Super Earth.
The bugs have a stranglehold on the economy.
    The bots hold opposite ideology.
The squids are more advanced technologically.
So how about an enemy with even less care for friendly fire? They kamikaze their own soldiers as as ours die, too.
Or a faction that has better unity? The entire map gains vague awareness of your position when you're spotted.
A faction of defectors, perhaps? They are literally our equals.

I mean the Terminids are already this settings equivlant of the bio bug swarm motif that the flood and Tyranids fill in their respective generes. though so far much less scary and threatening.
I don't really see them running another such faction when they could just buff the bugs (like they did with the super colony) the Ilimunate are kinda the settings Eldar or maybe tau. hyper advanced tech foe that is overwhelmed by us anyway due to their reletively low numbers. *which they seem to have fixed via the voteless much like how the tau use kroot or the Aldari used to use the orks) the Cyborgs were space commies and civil war traitors. and the Bots seem to be rouge Ai like terminators or Iron Men(or at least AI programed to fight us for some foriegn master if they aren't just totally indpendant.) if they were going to add a new faction I would think it would fill an unadressed niche. like a space dwarf faction for instance. a faction dedicated to terrifying defense rather than overwhelming offense. perhaps easy to beat back invasions but once they dig in they are DUG IN
the other way to think about it is think about what politics they could critsize next. Helldivers has lampooned Facism, Technocracy, Communism, resource wars, rouge ai, and the war on terror so far. is there another faction that could let them adress some other political ideology they might not be able to with the current roster?

I want the fourth faction to be rebel human colonies, their faction color would be green and they'd be poorly armed with old weapons they've salvaged from colonial defense reserves like the break action shotgun, but numerous amd just as capable of guerilla warfare as helldivers are. Our very own little GLA/Luddic Path
Instead of coming from any one side of the galaxy like the other factions they can function like how the illuminate function now; Instances of rebellions pop up in sectors anywhere on the galactic map. It also already fits lore wise, since they can be the ones running the rouge research labs and illegal broadcasts.
I also mainly want this because if they make decent human AI then they can add in SEAF allies to fight alongside us. I just desperately want a defense map where we can actually witness the invasions and not just the aftermath.
