My favorite fight is against Zanza, just the music, the music change, the cutscene and the scenery, it's all so badass, it's great.

    • @hypermoth
      @hypermoth 3 года назад +42

Egil's my favorite villain in that game, and Bionis Slash X is incredible, but the rest of Yaldabaoth's fight wasn't that interesting to me beyond the story implications of defeating him. And while I normally love An Obstacle in Our Path, this fight deserved its own music (or at least something that isn't the generic story boss theme).
But while Zanza's not as good as Egil, his fight is probably my favorite. Both pieces of music are phenomenal, the scenery is great, and I love that you have to use Burst Affinity to get visions against him. Standing up to Zanza with the Monado III right as God-Slaying Sword kicks in is so cathartic, and the third phase is a great "Finish him off!" segment. Not to mention that the cutscene of Shulk defeating Zanza is probably my favorite scene in the entire game.

Honestly that torna fight hits different when you play for the first time.
But on level 99 with everyone maxed I feel bad for malos. He gets rocked harder than the base game by getting topple locked by lora and jin while spamming specials and making your switch run at 10 fps while one of the best final boss tracks in the game plays.

I'd agree with you but it does have some issues. It is a stupidly hard fight but once you realize that the only thing you need to do is just get 1 of them at half health it starts to fall apart. The Pneuma part is really cool sure but we already have seen a similar situation in the Malos/Akhos fight.

The final boss fight of Torna was the most intense I’ve had in just about any game, ever. I had no idea it would depend so heavily on the party meter, so I was basically unprepared for the mechanics of it. Traded Siren arts with Malos back and forth nearly dying multiple times until I barely squeaked out my 4th one before he could, literally mashing the + button as the meters built up. Then, you know, everything that happens after that. Incredible.

I might be alone on this, but I like the Amalthus fight. There's a lot of the story that kinda just builds up to realizing that Amalthus is responsible for everything bad in the game, which makes it perfect for wanting to properly kick his ass. Plus he can be kinda tough on a casual run with all of his annoying attacks. Also, you can just cheese him with the hole if you set it up right, which is so funny.

    • @dominicjannazo7144

He's a decent villain, but he just shows up right after another fight in a featureless room, when you already know he's a villain so there's no twist. There's an epic battle with a view outside that should be an easy setup for a setting as good as the mechonis core fight, but no, just fight in a blank room. No view, no cool use of mechanics, you forget it immediately because he's already irrelevant to the plot, Malos is already ahead of you up the elevator going to destroy the world.

    Spoilers for XC2
One boss fight from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 which Always sticks out to me are the back to back fights against Jin and Amalthus at the World Tree. Yes, I know that technically they're two separate fights, but I've always seen them as a sort of single multistage fight.
It brings an end to Jin's character arc, and that final part of the scene when Amalthus dies and sees his mother reaching down always makes me tear up. It's a glimpse of the humanity that he left behind in his quest to destroy himself and the world. A lament for what could have been, had circumstances been different. If those bandits had never killed his mother that day, what kind of man would he have been? How would the world have changed? Would the Aegis even exist on Alrest?
So many interesting questions stemming from one of the most reviled villains in the series.
Plus, "The Power of Jin" is just such an amazing atmosphereic track.

Really awesome job man! There's a few bosses from xc1 and 2 that I also really love that I feel like listing here:
. Sword Valley Mumkhar: super memorable fight that's really satisfying on a story standpoint, since you finally get to finish of Mumkhar after he's been taunting you the whole game.
. Mutant Gort: I personally love the surprise factor and think it's a really interesting way to end the game. Although the triumphant epic fight with Malos is definitely meant to be the final boss, Gort feels like a very natural last fight.
. Leone Telethia: really memorable to me because of just how tough it is for that point in the game. The part midway through where the music changes is the icing on the cake for me.
. Rosa: I have genuinely never laughed so much during a boss fight before. The ridiculous design, the constant bickering between Bana and Muimui, plus the fact that it's really narratively satisfying for Tora makes it one of the more memorable parts of xc2 for me.
EDIT: since I've finally finished X I have a few more fights I'd like to add, as out of the xenoblade series I think it has the best bosses on average:
. Ga Jiarg: Admittedly the first phase is a little clumsy - though I enjoy it as I see it as a test to make sure you understand overdrive - but the second phase against Vasara is where its at. High defense and health, a barrier it casts at half health, and brimstone rain being summoned if the fight lasts long enough. Jiarg's character also adds to the fight's atmosphere.
Vita: X's finale drags on for much longer than it should in my opinion, but the fight against Vita is a ton of fun. The first phase is nothing special, but I really enjoy the idea of the various Satellis he summons in phase 2 and the different effects they grant Vita.
I'd also like to mention that Zu Pharg is by far my favourite fight in the series. Nothing can top chasing down a colossal war machine the size of a small town across an entire continent while it launches lasers and Ganglion aircraft your way relentlessly.

I was hoping Yggralith Zero would appear on the list.
As far as story goes it's literally an optional non canon boss but the lore beside it is incredible, basically it's a world swallowing space dragon and every time 2 of them meet their duel will destroy galaxies.
The 3 Yggralith you fight in X are all post game Super bosses and they all use non standard unique monster themes.
Yggralith Zero is the "Final Menace" and can only be fought when players worldwide complete an absolute metric ton of Squad missions to fill up the Global Nemesis meter. Not only is it a world wide effort to even unlock the mission that allows you to fight the thing but it's a worldwide effort to kill the thing. Yggralith Zero has 5,000,000 life bars and must be killed 5,000,000 to truly be killed, everytime you kill him you destroy 1 life bar and you can't overkill him and you only have 8 minutes to kill him as many times as you can. In The Forest is an incredible boss theme but what's even more incredible is using a multihitting art like Blossom Dance, killing him with every single hit of it and taking out 6 life bars with only 1 ability. It's an amazing feeling when your build comes together and Yggralith's health bar isn't even moving anymore, you're just killing him with every art use.
As far as a foray into online play Yggralith Zero manages to create an incredibly satisfying boss only amplified by X's hilariously non balanced combat system and make a boss that almost perfectly plays to the game's strengths and weaknesses to create an epic boss that you're killing multiple hundreds of times in just a few minutes with just this sense that it's not only you knocking this thing down but an unknown amount of people.

Not sure how qualified I am to speak on this as someone whose only Xeno game they’ve finished is Xenoblade 2, but I’ll take a crack at it anyway.
For me, every fight in 2 that really made an impression was one that absolutely kicked my ass.
Akhos and Malos in Chapter 3, Jin and Malos in Chapter 7, and the final encounter with Jin in Chapter 9.
Akhos and Malos: As was already mentioned this video, these two are likely to be the first boss that seriously challenges new players. You’re at an overwhelming disadvantage and have to play smart to survive. Mythra’s emergence here was also a big surprise for me, as while I knew about Mythra before reaching this point in the story I was shocked she appeared so soon. I had taken a long break from the game in the middle of Chapter 3, and this was the fight that sold me on going the rest of the way.
Jin and Malos: Despite not having played Xenoblade 1, I was familiar with most of its story. So getting forced into battle with someone wielding the Monado in addition to the already fearsome Jin was enough to tell this was going to be rough. Even more so than the Chapter 3 boss, these two are a brutal wall without the power of the Aegis to back you up. You have to fight for every inch, and even on my second playthrough much later where I knew what to expect this fight is still nasty. It took me hours to surmount the first time through, and to jump from that to gaining the true power of the Aegis against all odds probably makes it the most memorable encounter of the game for me. But that’s not to discredit...
Final Jin: Fittingly the last encounter of the game that gave me a serious challenge. Even alone, this broken man is able to stand against you on even footing. By now you’ve had several tastes of Jin’s capabilities, and this final fight doesn’t disappoint even on his last legs. This was the fight that forced me to finally master proper Chain Attacks to achieve victory. As time goes on, I’ve gained more appreciation for how this fight and the subsequent encounter with Amalthus resolve Jin’s role in the story as he finally fades away.

the egil fight in the mechonis core is sooo good.
seeing the vision of the entire bionis being destroyed followed by a story quest tellin ya “hey, good luck stopping that” is one of my favorite moments in that game just for how tense it is. Zanzas fight is also really good and I loved how it went from “yeah this isn’t too hard” to “zanza why are you destroying me, stop that” (aka thank you expert mode for not forcing me to have to redo the last 30 minutes) to “YO I GOT THE MONADO III LETS GOOO!!!”
both works perfectly as final bosses to the game for their own separate reasons.

Fun fact about the 3º bossfight (I don´t know how to spell that name) in the cutsenene beforehand, when he asks how many died in that attack, he attacks the Bionis´ shoulder so it was either a future connected reference or nobody died (Maybe both FC in a year after)

The final Malos fight in Torna is peak Xenoblade. It's incredible in every single way. Makes me wonder why the final boss in the base game was so mediocore. Actually fighting a fully powered Malos wouldve been a great conclusion for base XC2 but instead they go with him in an artifice and a limited battlefield. Felt like they Monolith realized that mistake and went all out with the final boss in Torna

Problem is we had already faced Malos before and even with his Aegis powers fully restored. And at that point it has been established that Pneuma is as strong as him if not stronger cause of the whole Blade×Driver bond situation. Malos needed Aion to face the entire team in the end, it only makes sense.

How the hell did the Prison Island Metal Face fight not make the list?
Brand-new mechanic, finally taking on the thing that started your journey, and the MASSIVE turn things take afterwards in the plot?
Sounds like a winning combination to me.

Your delivery in this video is a huge step-up from that of the Blade guides. I haven't given the topic much thought, and I might not agree with every placement in this top 10, but as far as the boss fights are concerned your arguments have convinced me that these at the very least deserve to be part of the conversation. The introduction explaining what makes a good boss fight in your opinion was also on-point. Keep up the good work!

I remember the final Egil fight blowing my mind when I first played it. During my first playthrough, I made a note to upgrade Monado Shield as much as possible so I won't get screwed by a high leveled attack. When Egil busted out "Bionis Attack X," I freaked out. My Shield level was at 7.
I think it is really cool when story mechanics mesh with gameplay mechanics. (It's also why I liked Torna's final battle.)

Even if he really isn't the divine emissary he thought he was, having a self heal, aoe force launch and copying Mythra's most devastating story attack really does make him seem like a god.

Now that I think about it. I believe all of Yaldabalths boss fights are just amazing. The first one where you are faced with battling him while trying to not hurt Fiora, and then having the ending scene with where shulk does what we believe to be suicide by jumping off the sword for Fiora and the rest of the party members going down with him is absolutely beautiful. The "your blade didn't cut deep enough" fight is so cool to just show how menacing he can be and further makes both harder to see how he can be redeemed, and further progresses shulks decline into vengeance. And the one you had in the Mechonis core was just so powerful of a fight. Seeing Bionis, the place where nearly the whole game has been set, just being destroyed in an instant is so impactful, and the climax, oh the climax. The shot composition in XC1 is so amazing and it's on full display in this scene with shulks defiance of the voice in his head which we now realize to not be his own, for him to solemnly accept that vengeance isn't the right way and drop his sword to casually sit on the shoulder of the mechcon was amazing, followed by the shots of Dickson walking around like he owns the place with things happening in the background and Shulk pretty much having a seizure was so horrifying it was all so so so perfect!!

For as janky and old the game is especially when compared to it's big brothers and sisters some of those games fights just hit different that I really don't think any of the other games in the series have replicated since.
