It can be useful to have an attorney on standby. The trial involves a degree of theatrics. It’s when the defendant gets to see that the rubber is going to hit the road…. Sometimes that can make them come to their senses and either accept representation or even change a plea to guilty.

That being said, being able to attend court over zoom is a problem when the court is dealing with contemptious defendants such as Mr. Martin, who feel that since they're sitting at home in their jammies can say whatever they want. There's a reason courtrooms are designed the way they are, and a reason courtroom security is available to drag ignorant defendants off to jail on the judges orders. Mr. Martin is exactly why those resources are available to judges.

I think that the court system is tired of dealing with these people. They are costing the system thousands of dollars for things that can be proven. You've been charged with driving without a license. I plead not guilty. According to the state records you do not have a current driver's license so I will find you guilty. This is your fine you can pay it on your way out of the courthouse. This is basically how it should work. You either have a license or you don't. There's nothing in between it's a yes or no situation.
