I lost my boyfriend to suicide on December 19th, 2007. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him. Even 11 years later. This was one of his favorite albums, and of course now I know why. I hope him and Chester are up there rocking out. The sun has set for them.

Even then I think he knew that he couldn't carry on anymore.. It breaks my heart knowing that his very last show ever.. Was a cry for help and for some reason he was booed off stage.. Dunno the music started and when he started singing, the crowd started booing and throwing stuff at him.. He left and a couple days later he was found dead...

Listening to Linkin Park songs. I've been through depression and anxiety, my father died dec 2016 and my mother died feb 2017. I was left alone. Im living alone, i battled through every day of my life. Finding reasons to live. I am thankful to my boyfriend who never left me through out this journey. Without him, and without God i will not be here anymore. I am not really a religious person, but ever since these things happened in my life, it brought me closer to God. Choose who you wanna battle with in this times of hardships, and with the proper people in your journey, you will see the sun setting again for you, like what this song is saying. God bless!
Roweanne Flores I totally feel you. I’m sorry about your parents. I lost my best friend(MOM) in June 3 years ago and then my dad last July. My only sibling, my older brother died July 27th, when I was 9 and (he was 19) over 20 yearsago(hard to believe that long)ago. Im the only one left here from my closest family members.So I feel so lost, alone, and like it will not get any better. I really feel like an orphan I mean I’m only 37 so I feel like I should still have atleast one of my parents here,but life don’t work like that. Some days are alright, but most of my days are dark. If it wasn’t for my 15 year old daughter I don’t think I would still be here for real and I hate saying that, but it just hurts so bad and it’s so hard to go on without any of them here. I believe God has shown me in different ways that they are all good and I know they wouldn’t want me to be like this, but it was just to soon. There’s still so much more they could have seen.

Your music showed me that someone else is going through what I was going through and wasn't afraid to express it. Your screams in your songs were a reflection of myself longing to scream all the feelings you expressed in your songs. You touched my heart and I am sad you are gone. I will miss you my friend. I know how you feel Christian! Linkin Park kept me from killing my self at least a dozen times. When I would listen when I was in one of those deep pits of depression I would start to feel better because I could hear the fact that he was there too in his singing! An d I know of a few others that they helped!
Linkin Park has always given me strength. Their songs have always been able to help me keep going, especially when I needed it most. Several of my friends are no different, once I explained why I like them. The simple explanation is a Resonance between my Heart and the song itself, But that's only the beginning. Such a high resonance with so many of their Songs resulted in so many good things happening to me. Several of them get me through a Harsh 12 hour shift at work, even now, when i don't need the emotional boost anywhere near as much. At this point, I'm happy to be alive, and I'm thankful to Linkin Park for helping with that.
The love and light Chester brought to this world while he was here will never be gone. He is not gone, he is in every single heart of those who loved his music. It is sad to think of him being gone, along with all the other great artists who have passed, but that’s not what they want us to do, they made their music to help us, to connect with us, I am forever thankful to them all, alive or dead. 💙🙏🏼
When I heard this morning that Chester committed suicide, this is the first song I thought of. I was never a die-hard fan of Linkin Park, but seeing how I grew up with them, the news really broke my heart. RIP
I was getting my hair cut at a barber shop when the news hit me. They played this song, citing it as one of the best examples of Chester's vocal talent. My mood that day went from chill elaxed\happy to depressed\sad in an instant. Also, I noticed something interesting about select Linkin Park songs over the years... Crawling, Breaking the Habit, Runaway, Shadow of the Day (this). and many more. Those songs all seemed to foreshadow that Chester was going to take his own life. Rest in peace, Chester.

Fighting suicide isn't easy, and sometimes thinking goodbye is the only way. I have battled depression for years and have considered suicide as my only option, how I'm still here I don't know.....I can relate to Chester in every aspect, but can't talk about it to family or friends because they just tell me to get over it like it's something I can control...

I'll admit, I haven't been as big as a fan lately, but I still turn to them every so often. And this song speaks to so many people suffering through the pains of life. Respect people. Love them. Give them a hug. And don't forget to tell them you love them. Many people suffer silently. They may seem happy, and in wanting to please they put a smile on their face. Even though inside they're dying. You don't have to be alone. You don't have to suffer alone. There is help. There is hope. There are people to talk to. Never feel as if you're a burden to others, because you're not. Asking for help is not a weakness. It means you're strong. Never give up. Depression might have taken Chester, but LP's music rings on. Dad usually used to call me looser ,rif raf , rubbish coz i didn't get recommended in army,friends are leaving because am boring even i nearly tasted death too .but whenever i think about suicide the picture of my mom came in front of my eyes who still cares for me then i stop thinking about suicide. Dear Chester, I actual went to my first "session" at the VA today. It was basically routine information gathering of course, but I ended up word vomiting my life history almost. I felt almost guilty for taking up more time than what was allotted and none of my issues are combat related at all so it feels like I'm using the VA. that someone else should have my time. When I listen to this song my throat chokes a bit and tears come rolling. Linkin park was my gateway to rock music when I was young and Chester was and always will be my hero. Listening to his music made me go through so many dark phases of my life , I could never repay him enough for his contribution in my life. This is for anyone who is calling suicide "selfish": Those are words spoken by people who have never experienced depression. If you say you have, you're lying. Think about the concept of death. It's scary, isn't it? Now think about taking your own life. Unthinkable, right? That's because every living being, including Humans, have what is called a "survival instinct". Do you think going against a natural instinct like that by ending your own life is the decision of a sound mind? No, it is the decision of someone who is broken at their core. Someone who can't see a light at the end of the tunnel. With that in mind, you can't honestly call it selfish anymore. It is a sickness. A horrible, festering disease that some people may never recover from. Would you blame someone for dying of cancer? Depression is no different. That being said, you should do everything in your power to fight it. Fight it as hard as you can for as long as you can because there's plenty of people who do recover from it and come out the other end stronger. You should always strive for that but no one should be placing blame on people who couldn't fight any longer. The only thing to blame is the disease.

this makes me cry my son took his own life last Easter and the demons he fought he put up such a fight .He always had a smile so many did not see his pain. over 250 people attended his memorial and they were all in shock . my heart is broken at the loss of his life that he fought hard for 34 years and then in an instant pulled the trigger and his demons are mine now. so many are loosing the battle with depression .

Shadow Of The Day simply tells the story of a man (songwriter) who is going through a very, very difficult period in his life. It seems that he is depressed and has serious problems (whether love problems, whether life problems). Sometimes the problem has a solution, but sometimes the problem is without a solution. The lyrics also describe that his life is always dark and difficult like the shadow of the day. Because the sun's rays always shine on people, while the songwriter is only between the dark sides (shadows) of the sun. So being alone (leaving the outside world) is the only option for him to escape from all these problems.

ahh yes, it's so easy to say that when you have friends, family, love, support, stability.. all the things that, when absent, are primary causes of suicide. Unless you have actually felt the crushing weight of depression, no words are going to express what it feels like to walk down a busy street and want someone to notice you, to say hi, how are you and really mean it. To leave a party and have no one stop you, no one question your absence the next day. To be handicapped and have grown up in such a way that deep down you feel like nothing you ever do will be good enough, that the 1st thru 8th graders that tortured you in school were right and you are a four eyed gimp loser who can't do anything right and will never amount to anything. People call them selfish for wanting to take their own life.. in my mind, we're the selfish ones, asking them to live on with whatever soul crushing pain they have, giving empty promises that things will get better in time when the reality is that life is a bitch and not all of us can be Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happiness.
The song doesn't have a different meaning. The meaning is the same as it always has been. But the meaning has been made far more clear. And has shown how personal songs like these were to Chester and his own life. The only solace that we can ever hope to have for Chester is that he is now at peace. Peace with himself, and the world. I'm not religious, and I'm not a big believer in there being a life after this one for us. But I now hope there is, just so that Chester can find his freedom.

some people have too much pain, in some cases it cannot be helped in my case, i got help just in time, and i'm happy about it i'd say "at least try holding on" but that won't help in all cases few days ago, i thought my father was suffering too much, which he was, but wasnt sure if he'd get better, due to him dementing and not able to talk and think straight, as he got almost no energy left when he fell down the stairs i was afraid it was not gonna change, and my mother felt the same, plus he said he wanted to go once he was gonna suffer thankfully he somehow got better now, and even though it's not as "good" as it was before he fell, it's starting to go better damm, why do i get the notification now? now tears are rolling again... almost lost my father here.... anyway, i gotta go soon. try to feel for those who are stuck in life, at least

Wow Linkin Park is the only band I know who are capable to lift me up or smash my soul into pieces with their music . It's hard to fight the demons every day . I fight and hope for this one day I can get along with them or they get buried with me.
The suicide rate for males is supposed to go down after age 25, so every day I keep telling myself that in a couple of years maybe something will happen and I won’t feel this way anymore.
I turn 27, next month, and to tell you the truth, it's just getting harder every day. But everyone's story is different. Maybe I'm just not one of the lucky ones. I really hope you get through this man, and that you find the peace and happiness to keep going. For now, just know you're not alone.

Listening to Linkin Park songs. I've been through depression and anxiety, my father died dec 2016 and my mother died feb 2017. I was left alone. Im living alone, i battled through every day of my life. Finding reasons to live. I am thankful to my boyfriend who never left me through out this journey. Without him, and without God i will not be here anymore. I am not really a religious person, but ever since these things happened in my life, it brought me closer to God. Choose who you wanna battle with in this times of hardships, and with the proper people in your journey, you will see the sun setting again for you, like what this song is saying. God bless!

My only sibling, my older brother died July 27th, when I was 9 and (he was 19) over 20 yearsago(hard to believe that long)ago. I really feel like an orphan I mean I’m only 37 so I feel like I should still have atleast one of my parents here,but life don’t work like that. Some days are alright, but most of my days are dark. Your screams in your songs were a reflection of myself longing to scream all the feelings you expressed in your songs. You touched my heart and I am sad you are gone. I will miss you my friend. I know how you feel Christian! Linkin Park kept me from killing my self at least a dozen times. When I would listen when I was in one of those deep pits of depression I would start to feel better because I could hear the fact that he was there too in his singing! An d I know of a few others that they helped!

Linkin Park has always given me strength. Their songs have always been able to help me keep going, especially when I needed it most. Several of my friends are no different, once I explained why I like them. The simple explanation is a Resonance between my Heart and the song itself, But that's only the beginning. Such a high resonance with so many of their Songs resulted in so many good things happening to me. Several of them get me through a Harsh 12 hour shift at work, even now, when i don't need the emotional boost anywhere near as much.
At this point, I'm happy to be alive, and I'm thankful to Linkin Park for helping with that.

Those are words spoken by people who have never experienced depression. If you say you have, you're lying.
Think about the concept of death. It's scary, isn't it? Now think about taking your own life. Unthinkable, right? That's because every living being, including Humans, have what is called a "survival instinct".
Do you think going against a natural instinct like that by ending your own life is the decision of a sound mind? No, it is the decision of someone who is broken at their core. Someone who can't see a light at the end of the tunnel.
With that in mind, you can't honestly call it selfish anymore. It is a sickness. A horrible, festering disease that some people may never recover from. Would you blame someone for dying of cancer? Depression is no different.
That being said, you should do everything in your power to fight it. Fight it as hard as you can for as long as you can because there's plenty of people who do recover from it and come out the other end stronger.
You should always strive for that but no one should be placing blame on people who couldn't fight any longer. The only thing to blame is the disease.

It seems that he is depressed and has serious problems (whether love problems, whether life problems). Sometimes the problem has a solution, but sometimes the problem is without a solution. The lyrics also describe that his life is always dark and difficult like the shadow of the day. Because the sun's rays always shine on people, while the songwriter is only between the dark sides (shadows) of the sun. So being alone (leaving the outside world) is the only option for him to escape from all these problems.

ahh yes, it's so easy to say that when you have friends, family, love, support, stability.. all the things that, when absent, are primary causes of suicide. Unless you have actually felt the crushing weight of depression, no words are going to express what it feels like to walk down a busy street and want someone to notice you, to say hi, how are you and really mean it. To leave a party and have no one stop you, no one question your absence the next day. To be handicapped and have grown up in such a way that deep down you feel like nothing you ever do will be good enough, that the 1st thru 8th graders that tortured you in school were right and you are a four eyed gimp loser who can't do anything right and will never amount to anything. People call them selfish for wanting to take their own life.. in my mind, we're the selfish ones, asking them to live on with whatever soul crushing pain they have, giving empty promises that things will get better in time when the reality is that life is a bitch and not all of us can be Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happiness.

The song doesn't have a different meaning. The meaning is the same as it always has been. But the meaning has been made far more clear. And has shown how personal songs like these were to Chester and his own life. The only solace that we can ever hope to have for Chester is that he is now at peace. Peace with himself, and the world. I'm not religious, and I'm not a big believer in there being a life after this one for us. But I now hope there is, just so that Chester can find his freedom.
I'm exactly like you. I wasn't super religious before but now I really, really hope there is an afterlife for Chester's sake. I miss Chester, this still hurts. :(

in my case, i got help just in time, and i'm happy about it
i'd say "at least try holding on" but that won't help in all cases
few days ago, i thought my father was suffering too much, which he was, but wasnt sure if he'd get better, due to him dementing and not able to talk and think straight, as he got almost no energy left when he fell down the stairs
i was afraid it was not gonna change, and my mother felt the same, plus he said he wanted to go once he was gonna suffer
thankfully he somehow got better now, and even though it's not as "good" as it was before he fell, it's starting to go better

I just wish Chester went to sleep and woke up the next day realizing that he wanted to live. It breaks my heart to think that he was hurting that much! I know I hurt that much sometimes, but thinking of him and Chris Cornell keeps me strong and scares me about how final that choice would be. I will choose to live even though it is hard.
