- Who knew that a relatively young eatery, tucked away in a quiet corner of Goa’s northernmost city, would be the proud home of Goa’s biggest fish thali? This honour belongs to Pernem’s Bhumiputra restaurant
Today, Lesley, Maria, Viola and Roma are off to Pernem. One of our viewers told us that this restaurant Bhumiputra has a very big thali. So we’re going to find out if it’s true. We’re taking healthy appetites and going all the way from Margao to Pernem

Pernem is Goa’s northernmost city, about 30 minutes drive from Mapusa, and also close to Mopa Airport. Just follow the Margao-Panjim-Mapusa highway towards Bombay. About 15-20 minutes after crossing Mapusa, look out for this HP petrol pump on your left. This is the sign that you should slow down. Quite soon, you will see an Indian Oil petrol pump on the right. This is where you exit the highway. There is a sign for Pernem here. Exit and continue straight down the service road. You will reach a fork. Take the left into Pernem town. After 1 kilometre on this road, turn left. Just 300 metres down, turn right and you will immediately see a green colour building ahead. That is GGC Arcade and Bhumiputra restaurant is on the 2nd floor

As soon as we enter we see the sign for what we have come all the way from Margao to eat: Bhumputra’s Rawan thali (Rs 2,499), which the restaurant says is Goa’s biggest. We shall soon find out.
Bhumiputra’s Rawan thali is so huge, two people are needed to carry it! On seeing the thali, we are all a little speechless. This one thali has 12 varieties of fish and seafood: kingfish, pomfret, bangdo, prawns, squid, crab, chonak, soundale, teesrio, tarle, vellio and leppo. It has 2 vatis (bowls) of dry prawns kismur, 2 vatis of teesrio and big, fat teesrios, 2 vatis of prawn cafreal, 1 kheer, 4 tandoori rotis, one tival/futi kari, sal kari, 2 prawn curries, 2 vatis of crab xec xec, 2 vatis of cabbage bhaji, kingfish, tarle, vellio, squid, chonak, prawns, small leppo, soundale, bangdo, pomfret, rice, tandoori chicken leg, salad, papaddum and pickle.
To be honest, at the start we were a bit overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of fish and seafood in front of us. We have shown you the whole thali, but have filmed only part of our meal, which took quite a while to eat. Here are just some highlights
After about 45 minutes, we are getting quite full. Four people ate just over half this Rawan thali. We will pack all the rest, of course
Bhumiputra’s Rawan thali is so large and such a different experience, that you will have to go yourself, preferably along with 5 other friends, to truly appreciate its variety and taste. This thali is fpr 4 people but will feed 6 to 8 people.
Maria and I have eaten a lot of thalis, so have Viola and Roma and none of us has ever seen such a big thali that is by far the biggest thali in Goa. And it was really, really delicious. What I found so impressive is that there were so many items on the thali, but the fish curry was superb and the dry prawn kismur, the sal kari. These are all the marks of good cooking. This is a must-try

At Pune we have similar Punjabi Thali which is named similar to this Thali along with other Thali naned after Politicians and Cricketers served at Aaoji Khaoji😊😊

Yes, we were quite impressed because the individual dishes were really good and it’s not easy to fry so much fish at the same time and serve it crisp and hot. The couple of tandoori items I didn’t like, but the others loved them so that’s just a preference thing. A very tasty thali overall indeed

So many of these Ravana, Bakasura, Bahubali types thalis have come on the food scene. I personally find such large spreads rather vulgar and grotesque... this is not a comment on the quality of the food, just the sheer quantity.
There's this place between Mumbai and Pune that serves Bullet Thalis, huge non-veg thalis with multiple curries, fried items, varieties of rice, etc., and almost every table orders it and so much of it just gets wasted because people order it for novelty and their social media handles... at least you guys packed the leftovers. In a country like ours, food wastage is criminal I feel.

Just out of curiosity Lesley, why exactly does rava figure so prominently in Goan cuisine? Is it a Konkani thing or is it regional and extend both northwards into Maharashtra and south into Karnataka?
Hi, it is a Konkani thing, definitely, but you will find in some places and thalis in Maharashtra and Karnataka Konkan regions, it is a sideshow, sometimes there or not. In Goa it is absolutely a must have with fish curry. We can't do without the crispiness

Dear Madam Lesley: I am subscriber and follow your food vlogs earnestly. Whenever we are in Goa , we visit the restaurant basis your review. On 17th April 2024, myself with my three friends drove down from Kolhapur to Pernem exclusively for lunch at Bhumiputra restaurant for their Ravan thali..the total experience was disastrous. The items in thali were not fresh and were not properly cooled. Pomfret was not fresh at all and the size was three finger width. Mackerel 0:25 was half cooked. Curry was not good at all. Overall experience was very bad.
Madam , my experience with kalika bar Margao and Tukaram bar and restaurant Dhuler was very good.
Madam, lot many people like me follow you. Request not to promote bad places like bhumiputra with your good reviews. They don’t deserve it….
