I've had a Barmah bag hat for 18 years! Even when the brim broke a few years back, I just sent it to Barmah and four days later it showed up like brand new. Good company, best hat ever!
Love the Barmah hat! My oldest one is 13 years old now, a Squashy Fullgrain. Just got me a Squashy crackle Roo-Hickory, and a Squashy Bronco-Hickory two tone.
Ya sold me. I've been looking for an ideal wide-brimmed hat for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and camping. I have a Tilley and an Outback Trading Co. hat, but now I need this one to complete the trifecta lol.
I've had the calf-leather squashy bronco for about four years now. Taken it through all of the elements you can imagine with exception of the arctic areas. I just rub some mink oil into it when it starts to get dry. Over the years, the side of the hat started folding up; it might provide a little bit less cover from the sides, but it honestly looks great.
Same, but had mine for 10 years as a hand-me-down from my dad, and mine says Cattle-Leather. Not sure personally the difference between the young and old cow leather, still, i take it literally everywhere with me, oil it, and the compliments usually just roll in, lol.
I bought the vintage Kangaroo Barmah for volunteer Search and Rescue work in the US south central states, which get extremely hot and sunny in the summers. I needed a hat that could hold up to me shoving through brambles that scratch up our arms and faces without getting knocked off or caught, could protect me from the sun and rain, and which I didn’t have to worry about ruining from these activities. It also helps to keep the many ticks off my head that drop out of the trees here, especially when I treated it with Permethrin, which didn’t damage the leather. I absolutely love my hat and have worn it on many missions, training sessions, and travels. It’s perfect for what I use it for, and all I need to do to care for it is condition and waterproof it every few months or so. I had a hat customizer in Philadelphia customize my hat with a hat band that is bright orange and makes it more visible for when we are in the woods during hunting season and I put feathers in the hat that I found while we are in the woods, as well as various pins I’ve gotten while traveling. These hats are simple yet nice looking that it is fun to customize them and personalize them to you. I did purchase the chin strap because while this hat holds in well in most conditions, we got some very intense wind in our state and I have had it blow off when we are searching around lakes or in the plains. With the hat strap it stays securely to my head when it is windy.
Picked one up in Sydney recently and love it, light and comfortable. Mine came with a chin string that fits through the 2 side holes, it tucks inside when not in use (easily removed) - but very glad to have it when out on Sydney harbor ferry in breezy conditions. I'm sure it would have blown overboard otherwise in the gusty conditions. Have a Bakpakka fold flat leather hat that is similar style - but this Barmah squashy Roo is fantastic!
Good to hear, in the early days I was looking at modifying a chin strap to mine but found with the elastic band on the inside and the right sizing it stays on. However, I need to be wary of I get my hair cut too short haha
I'm an Aussie. Had an Akubra for years. Wear it on the farm. Love it but wanted a Barmah so I could fold it up and shove it in my belt if need be, Its a bit more versatile than my Akubra. The price is still $100 (AUS) 7 years after you made this video. Its a great hat. I'm really happy with mine.
I stay in Australia and I been in the heaviest downpour and the been hot days above 100 and this does the job. Mines has the back head part of the hat is mesh to let wind through and heat out. It a good keeper as we say here. Regards
Of all the Aussie hats, this is one of the best. The Akubra rabbit fur felt hats are probably the most popular, but don't take well to any folding or more rough conditions. With frequent use, they will get a hole in them within the first decade of wear. Barmah's squashy leather hats will last a lifetime (with proper care).
Thanks to you i bought this hat its the 1018 dark brown, its so light i for get its on my head sometimes, A must have here in ireland with the weather we get so cheers buddy for the review.
I have two BARMAH hats I bought in Sydney ten years ago ,while touring the world on QUEEN MARY 2 ,one is the INDIANA JONES style with crocodile teeth .They are perfect to play golf by warm weather rand cold weather alike
I called Barmah before buying a Vintage kangaroo for my son. Asked the Rep a size for my son’s 23” head. She suggested a XXL. Apparently sizes run a little small. I believe all kangaroo skins are made in Australia, but other hats made in the USA. Customer service rep very friendly and my call was answered within five rings .
Great review mate, you can’t go wrong with a kanga skin hat. You can use leather conditioner to keep it soft. 🤠🦘 👍🏼 I’ve got two tabs above my ears on my hat for a chin strap but like you said, you don’t need it. Mine fits like a glove too. I sweated heavily in it on a hike and my sweat went around the back and down my neck, not one drop in my eyes.😊
I saw this video last year and I've wanted one ever since. I finally ordered one and it arrived a couple of days ago.... can't wait to wear it! I'm waiting on my order of the Barmah leather conditioner so I can condition it really well before wearing it out in the Florida sun and rain. Thank you for sharing this info!
I got one as a gift, it doesn't suit me much so I put the sides up to make it look smaller but that is me the Hat itself is a hell of a thing, comfy, warm, superbly made but not cheap, this will last you a lifetime.
Love the barmah hat I got picked it up at Victoria market Australia in December. The leather conditioning cream is great. But hard to find in the UK would love another hat.
I have bought barmah hat made from kangoroo leather since 2010. Everyday I used this hat to protect my head from sun and rain. And today this product still enjoy to use without damage. Its real

Good review. I'm buying this hat and a wide brim canvas cooler for texas heat. My old tilley airflow wore out, and I don't want to pay the guaranteed for life replacement fee, for a hat that is now made in china.
great video... why can't i find this hat on there website, i found some kangaroo hats but not this one. can you PLEASE send the link to buy one like yours please
also suede? I have an Australian hat that is not smooth leather, do you have any idea how to treat it to feed it? excuse the language, use the translator.
Hey I’m in a state where it’s not as hot *Texas* but I ain’t into hats with holes in them on the crown do they have one without the breathable brass holes
You'd be baking without the vent holes, in a leather hat. Texas? Dude, why don't ya have a Shady Brady for the summer. Anyway, these holes are purpose-driven, not decorative.
I bought it in Australia from a shop so I got fitted by the guy there. I can't really say about size. I've found that the hat shrinks in heat and expands in cold wet weather.
Really liked your video....very well done, and explained. Mostly that we can tell you use your hat...ot just a weekend show piece. For me...A hat is to be worn and not pampered. Once a year on my leathers, I use "PICARD" leather treatment and rub it in real good by hand in a circular motion and heavy on all seams. Than I lightly (lightly !!) hit it with a hair dryer melting any excess and allow even flow and lightly hand rub excess in. I let my hat set a week.....than wear the dickens out of it. I also own some "AKUBRA" HATS from Australia, a fur felt which is thicker than my "BARCELONA." I use my AKUBRA fur felt during the frigid cold weather here. THESE AKUBRAS are very high quality as well.
Just got by mail my Squashy Roo and Squashy Roo Cooler. I ordered XXL size and frankly.... It's on the small size for an XXL (Canada & US size). If you have a big head, take a true measurement before ordering.
Good hat but treat it well. Don't store it in the bag folded twice. It's the second fold, stored for a long period that will affect the shape. As EJ suggests keep it in its open shape when not in use and only fold for travel. Fold once if you have to, fold twice only if you really have to. But don't worry these hats can be reshaped with some simple techniques, but that's another video. Oh, and yeah, I do have this hat.
Hi Jack, congratulation for your RUclips channel and thanks for your help. l would like to buy a Barmah hat, becouse i work often under the rain. I would try to understand what is best watwerproof for work long hour and day under the rain. Please ..Do you can suggest me the best model if you know it... Thanks Pasquale.
Thanks for your comment, however tbh this is the only Barmah hat I have tried so cannot comment on the other models. I wish I could get my hand on a few more of their hats to try out. I have made a video on waterproofing and it has worked for me: ruclips.net/video/QPSlgiO3pH4/видео.html Also heard people using mink oil.. hope this helps.
Shepard The inside is really soft smooth suade with an elasticated headband. I don't think there's no need to waterproof the inside. The headband keeps the leather from touching your head. hope this helps.
pull the cord through the sweat holes, in such a way you get the Canadian mountain police strap type, creating a strap for the chin AND around the back of the head.
Excellent review and I can agree that the Barmah hat is an excellent hat. Just curious though, you and I, i think have the exact same hat. What size is yours? I got fitted at the shop as well. The XXL was a Little too large so I'm wearing an XL. How does yours fit? An inch above the eye brows (as the all mighty Internet states) or does yours fit differently? Reason is I've not used mine for a while but now I'm in Thailand and it seems a little tighter than when I bought it. Anyway great vid and looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!!
yes I think mine is 7. something inches so should be similar to your XL one. I've found it gets loose in cool temperatures and tightens in hot sun so thats probably whats going on with you in Thailand. Hope your having a great time in Thailand!
Yeah it's coming into the hottest time of the year here so I'm not too surprised. Also your video about caring for your Barmah hat is very useful now that my hats being exposed to ample amounts of sunshine.
