- Introduction of BBC documentary, The train now departing series, episode Lines of Industry, 1988, showing CEGB no 2 tank engine at Castle Donington power station, now demolished.
Had the privilege working early shift in the canteen. Shame it was not kept as a museum, as Big Pit in Wales, a foundation lesson for industrialisation education. Thanksgiving to and for those contributions to life and its learning. ❤
This actually was one of the last places to use steam locomotives, it is believed one of the engines was still around here as late as 1990
I have been on the footplate of Castle Donington 1 and after it left Castle Donington power station it went to Cottam power station and my dad use to look after it then it got bought by someone at the midland railway and be restored
three of the episodes can now be streamed on the bbc website.
Six episodes available now. Thanks for the heads up!
I have this episode on an old VHS tape with the same ep title, which I think was recorded at the time it was first shown. But for some reason, after the titles appear, it cuts to old b&w archive footage of passengers boarding a train with the narrator (who sounds different to the narrator in this episode) talking. However, this version cuts to a power station. Unless there were two different parts of the episode that were shown separately?
Sad really, all that industrial heritage flattened for a warehouse estate. At least one or more of the engines survive.
thats right it is beck foot viaduct at Low gill, it still survives today, Ivo Peters also took a photograph of that train at the same time, message me if you would like to see it
