To be honest I thought chasing light is one of the weaker songs. That being said I liked the not released songs a lot better than the singles apart from Darkness, of which I really dig the riff
I almost turned it off halfway through this track…that little breakdown in the middle is so awful. Lars just hits the snare again and again and again…mix in a fill, Lars. Ughhhh.
On first listen, definitely the 2nd half of the album is the strongest part of the album. For me, this album feels more cohesive than Hardwired. Too Far Gone. I need to hear that live. Enough said.

Honestly this is my favorite Metallicas album since Rob joined Rob bass and Lars drums feel much better and noticeable than on previous records. The problem is that teher isn't many noticeable riffs majority of a songs and some solos are boring and repetitive but some are phenomenal and unique like in the Room of mirrors
Kirk just contained himself in a pentatonic box and said it was a fun challenge staying there. It just sounds like an excuse to me. I liked everything about this album that wasn’t focused on Kirk. Rob shined. James shined on vocals. Lars wasn’t horrible. But Kirk still sounds uninspired, bored, and that he still hasn’t found his “iPod full of ideas”.
Went to the cinema last night for the premiere & didn’t have the highest expectations. But overall I’m impressed. I really like Inamorata & Shadows follow. But 72 seasons is the standout track for me. 4 outta 5 for this album 😎

Great review! I’m personally a huge huge fan of Inamorata. My favorite Metallica song is The Outlaw Torn so hearing something more akin to that made me so damn happy. I can understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea though, it’s very long and emotionally intense.
We have to remember that the lyrics come from James’ life experiences, and with age he’s learned to deal with life a lot better. We got killer lyrics and riffs in the early days because there was more emotion and more to say. I think with their age, they’re doing pretty damn good. And the fact that they can still play the older stuff is pretty remarkable too. At this point in their life, they could walk away from writing and performing, and sit back and live off of residuals, but they still get off doing live performances. I myself, appreciate any new material they put out
I don’t think there’s any pressure on Metallica to do anything. They are older dudes playing some damn good music. It’s pretty simple. We all change and people need to get w/that or get over that. The new album is pretty good. Just support good music. Have you heard what passes for music lately? Yeah
You could literally cut the album length by 50% and either lose nothing of value or make a number of the songs infinitely better. Chasing Light would without a doubt be the best thing they've made since Load if it wasn't for it being nearly 7 minutes.
It’s an ok album. I’m sure it’ll grow on me like the last two did. My biggest problem is it seems like Lars is only comfortable using his snare, kick and hi hat with an occasionally a crash cymbal.
In my opinion the last three songs saved the album. Too Far Gone? has a great chorus and riffs. Room of Mirrors was thrashy and the harmonies were great. While I do think it definitely could have been cut, Inamorata has some of the band's best harmonies and the bass breakdown was fantastic.
"72 Seasons" suffers from the same problem as Hardwired, the songs are too bloated and long. There is no reason for half these songs to be 6+ minutes each. Metallica could get away with this in the 80's because those songs had amazing song composition. There was an intro, a build up, an interlude, and an amazing solo. But these songs have none of that. There was a lot of hype for "Inamorata" and while there are some good parts, there's no reason for it to be 11 minutes long. EDIT: lmao 11:36. I see you are a 4chan lurker! I made those "Chad metallica" photoshops last night hahaha
I also went to the cinema last night for the premiere. Wasn't expecting a masterpiece after hearing the singles. Overall, the album sounds to me quite lost particularly when it comes to arrangements and production. I think the band should have been coached by someone i.e. the producer, a close friend, a music critic, etc. Similar to what Bob Rock did back in the day. Someone to remind James and Lars "please keep it short, avoid repetitions, less is more, etc." and Kirk "you can do better than that, please get rid of that wah pedal and the pentatonics"...
Amazing review, i love this album. This album is the best since Black album, this album have elements of early Metallica (Kill Em All, RTL, AJFA Black album) and also later era (Load, Reload, Death Magnethic, Hardwired..) 🤘
Good review. I agree for most part. First 2 tracks are the best. You must Burn and Crown are worst. Wasn’t impressed with the finale. Was hoping they would find that Orion/Chtulu magic again. But nope. I of course need to listen to these all multiple times over some days/weeks to see how they age on me. But first impression is that too many songs here are Load/Reload ish. As of now, I say Hardwired is better.

@Erich w/ an h Love it! And I agree on Enya as well, and I'd have to say Shepherd Moons would be my go-to (A Day Without Rain is probably #2). With your broad musical tastes, it's highly probable you already - but if you haven't, check our Loreena McKinnett. It is much more Celtic-influenced, but for me, it produces a similar relaxed/meditative feel. Some of the older ones suffer from budget/production quality of the 80s, but still good listens. The Book Of Secrets was probably the most widely notable, but The Mask And The Mirror has always been my personal favorite. LOL, so...about the new Metallica album that the video was on...I liked it overall. My favs will always be my favs, but this will definitely get some listen time.
Nice Cervin Vega speakers. How do they sound? I have a pair of RE-E8's 15 inch woofers. I didn't like the album, but I have liked an album since An Justice, the first I heard as a teen in 1988.
Also, I haven’t looked into it yet, but does anyone know if Inamorata is intended as a follow up, or part 2, to “My Friend of Misery”? Lyrically, it seems so. If the riffs/groove here was closer to that song, this could’ve been awesome track. Kinda like unforgiven 1 and 2 having similar sounds
My biggest criticism is most songs could be cut in half and lose nothing or be better/tighter. Songs have some good stuff going at the start/first verse/1st breakdown, then outlive their welcome by revisiting the same material over and over, and over. Metallica desperately needs some impartial people around them. The entire staff of HQ" just look like salary collecting nod alongs, including Greg.
I think this album is slowly growing on me, but I don't think I'm going to be able to get over the damn hi-hat over almost every guitar part that should have been just the guitar (or bass in the case of the mid section of Inamorata.
I had a chance to see the global premiere in cinema, and as much as I loved the songs and entire album (almost) then there were 3 videos they displayed that were absolutely terrible. I think "Chasing Light" was the worst, as for that one they have been displaying some strange, random black and white pixels. It was so hard to watch and felt like they just throw something there, to have anything instead of black screen (which I think would be better than that). Felt more like epilepsy trigger exercise more then anything else really. But beside of that, I had a great time and its so cool to have a chance to experience the new album for the very first time, with other Metallica fans!
I have to allow myself some wiggle room when judging the RUclips channel critic. Because he admits that he got into metal after purchasing, And Justice for All... , so as a 52yr old and a metal head since Iron Maiden Killers and Shout at the Devil little later on as a 13yr old. Many other bands like WASP, Ozzys first two albums, more Hard Rock but Randy Rhodes is nothing but genius and heavy, metal too So I won't be able to compare any of the critic's reviews and pros and cons till I listen to the new release, and by that time I might forget to return here.

@@OnTheFlipSideShow interesting, I have been pretty close to the bands recording methods and reported dramas, but I was not aware of this little gem of insider secrets. Must have been time consuming since it was linear editing back then.
I've only really delved into the first 4 songs... but listened to the rest on a low volume at work this morning and though I won't commit, from what I can tell I agree. And I said after the release of the first 4 songs that this album has the potential to be the best since ...Justice. But I think The Black Album is a safer and less bold statement. 100
The guitar mix seems imbalanced, the guitars don't stand out enough in the overall sound - possibly a result of the scooped mids tone. I didn't find many moments where the guitar riffs really grabbed my attention or made me want to pick up my own guitar (Shadows Fall has this little refrain which is a direct lift of the ’60s Batman TV show, which is a bit naff). Despite this and in comparison to their entire discography (after the initial listen), I would rate this album a respectable 3 out of 5. However, the songwriting lacks the variety found in their previous album, "Hardwired" and is less immediately accessible. Typically, I find that songs grow on me with repeated listens, so I anticipate enjoying this album more after giving it a few more spins.
I completely agree looks eternal if darkness had a son are the only songs I like it all sounds like one long song it’s not good it’s not bad I think hardwired was better
I think that to be able to criticize the music of someone with so much experience and success (metallica) you would have to say why your opinion should be taken into account, to be able to even criticize them you should be able to write and play like them otherwise Your opinion is just the words of someone inexperienced who expects to hear the same thing as before to be happy or compare it against groups that have not even had half the success of Metallica. It's my opinion about you, what does it feel like?
It's 5/10 for me. The best songs are the singles. I hate Inamorata. It's a stinker! Easily the worst piece of garbage they have written. I actually love Kirk's leads throughout. They rescue a lot of these songs. Too much filler for my liking. Sadly this could be their last album. I'll have to spin it again and hope I connect with it more!
Metallica should make acoustic music. Old guy music. They don’t have the fire for this type music. It feels fake or forced. CHANGE IT UP ... make album what you want. Not what you are supposed to do. 60 year olds are allowed to make acoustic music.
I think it’s the best they have done since Load I guess. I like it definitely better than the last 3 albums. It sounds less forced. I really like inamorata as a closer. Like you said they didn’t try to copy the 80s stuff like they did on hardwired and death magnetic. I think they should have made it shorter though trim it a bit
Do you really think that? Do you think that Metallica sits down and thinks we are going to copy and that things sound like before? you really think that? Do you think they are children trying to make music that everyone likes like you? James doesn't think of you to make music, he spits out everything he feels like, they're metallica, think about it, don't you think?
Tired of the long records with a split between their early days and the yarlling and wah wah abuse. Do it old school. That's what people are asking for. 45 min record. Just release two different records. I mean that's what im going to do anyway. Do away with anything that sounds like Black Album forward.
I still think it's a step in the right direction compared to Hardwired but I absolutely understand where you're coming from. Production issues hold this album back from being truly great.
This album is bland. I miss melody, freshness, relief, everything is tamped down. I don't like the production (drums, snare and kick too dry). I miss variety in the arrangement too (drums breaks are all the same in the entire album!! really annoying... compared to the Black album where every breaks was different.) Lake of creativity in solos..to bluesy. Very disappointed with this album.
Another average album, showing their age which can’t be helped. Heavy punk rock band and still pull the crowds live for people wanting to listen to the older music they were famous for.
For me, i have listened to it and i find it boring. I think the drums sound very flat, vocally i think hetfield sounds tired like he himself isnt that interested. The best buts are when there is no vocals like in the intros. Im kinda tired of people saying ‘its good for them….’ - its nowhere near hard enough compared to what else is being released. For me its just gentle hard rock. Its what they like doing nowadays.
I listened to it once and didn't like it. I found it uninspired, generic and boring. But I'll give it another chance. However, almost all new Metallica songs just sound too slow and drawn out for me. They usually become much better when listened to at 1.25 speed, and it's not a joke :)
okay so youre clearly not a Metallica fan because this is probably their best album in the last almost 30 years and most fans are gonna agree. It's the first album where they finally went back to thrash, punk and speed metal fairly consistently throughout the album.
I think if we're honest, there's two ways to look at this. If you like rock and roll then this is a fine album. But there are thousands of bands light-years better and more talented than Metallica. They're just not a heavy metal band anymore...
"Shadows Follow", "Chasing Light" & "Too Far Gone?" are sick.
They're absolutely some of the best tracks they've put out in years.
To be honest I thought chasing light is one of the weaker songs. That being said I liked the not released songs a lot better than the singles apart from Darkness, of which I really dig the riff
those are the only tracks I would listen to it again. screaming suicide and 72 seasons were okay. but overall the album was very boring for me.
Absolutely agree with you! Those 3 songs are really good! Especially shadows follow. Man what a sick riffs and great temp of music.
Update; "Room of Mirrors" - that fucking bridge is easily my favourite part of the album. So tasty!

You Metallica fanboys are giving a pass to a another bad album by the old man !
Never heard of drum loops on any of the albums, but I learn something some days.
Basically during the recording of Justice Lars was too coked up to keep time so they cut short segments of his tracks and looped them to make it work.
@@OnTheFlipSideShow interesting, I have been pretty close to the bands recording methods and reported dramas, but I was not aware of this little gem of insider secrets. Must have been time consuming since it was linear editing back then.
you must burn is a good song
Best album since The Black album
I've only really delved into the first 4 songs... but listened to the rest on a low volume at work this morning and though I won't commit, from what I can tell I agree. And I said after the release of the first 4 songs that this album has the potential to be the best since ...Justice. But I think The Black Album is a safer and less bold statement. 100
How bout that Jethro Tull album in the background. That's funny shit. iykyk
I'm glad someone got the joke!
Typically, I find that songs grow on me with repeated listens, so I anticipate enjoying this album more after giving it a few more spins.
alternative rock?
I completely agree looks eternal if darkness had a son are the only songs I like it all sounds like one long song it’s not good it’s not bad I think hardwired was better
That is fair
Bro inamorata is one of the best songs they've ever written. Room of mirrors too far gone 72 seasons are bangers as well
@@joshuablankenship4701 I'm just glad I liked this album more than the last one.
@@OnTheFlipSideShow I think it's best since black album and I enjoyed DM and HTSD. So many good harmonies in last half of album and James sounds great
METALLICA ALWAYS WILL RULE 🤘🔊🎸🤩
Lars hi hat sounds too loud , its awful!
This is a silly argument and you're a midwit.
Tell us how you really feel lol
Bru the drums are awsome
It’s not great but they have their get out of jail for free card - they’re Metallica
They must have hundreds of those
THE NEW METALLICA ALBUM IS FULL OF AWESOMENESS AND MOST METAL EVER!!!!🎸🔥🤘☠️🥁🎼
Cool reaction fan been fan since 84
Fatiguing. That's my review of the last three Metallica albums.
Pee-pee poo-poo, St. Anger part 2
Electric boogaloo
C +
Should be a 6 or 7 out of 20.
more like 4/20 amirite
Tired of the long records with a split between their early days and the yarlling and wah wah abuse. Do it old school. That's what people are asking for. 45 min record. Just release two different records. I mean that's what im going to do anyway. Do away with anything that sounds like Black Album forward.
Vocês só falam merda na internet. O álbum é bom.
Nothing really stands out and it all sounds too similar song to song.
My review: If you think Beyond Magnetic is good, you'll like this album.
you want to be melon so much, don’t you?
We both use the most common review format out there. What's your point?
The songs are toooo long, and don’t inspire. Wish they would get themselves a producer to challenge and edit them.
I still think it's a step in the right direction compared to Hardwired but I absolutely understand where you're coming from. Production issues hold this album back from being truly great.
Too long ? Cry more the album was great
@@jvramirez1577 I honestly feel like they were shorter than usual with the exception of the last track.
@@OnTheFlipSideShow yeah the were pretty good to me I enjoyed this album a lot
I liked the longer songs.
Chasing Light is my favorite. It is one of the trashiest songs. Not Metallica style thrash but true thrash
Ignorance is bliss. I have no idea what you are talking about with drums.
It seems like they tried to re-write Moth into Flame 7 times
Nothing special just leftovers from previous album
Haven't made a good album in 35 years. Another uninspired dud. 🤦 Worst metal album of the year so far.
Oh man I've heard so much worse this year.
I listened to it once and didn't like it. I found it uninspired, generic and boring. But I'll give it another chance. However, almost all new Metallica songs just sound too slow and drawn out for me. They usually become much better when listened to at 1.25 speed, and it's not a joke :)
IMO The sick the dying and the dead is much, much better. 72 seasons is... boring. Sorry.
I do like both! I was just making a point on the quality of vocal performances.
Worst review I watch until now!
Thank you, thank you.
Definitely would not buy it.
First four is all I need.
okay so youre clearly not a Metallica fan because this is probably their best album in the last almost 30 years and most fans are gonna agree. It's the first album where they finally went back to thrash, punk and speed metal fairly consistently throughout the album.
All of the songs sound the same just the tempos switched up.
how so
it's just not a good album...let's be honest
This whole album sounds like a bunch of leftover B sides from Death Magnetic.....No Bueno
Songs are way too long and it seems lazy. No reason for an album to be 77mins long!
They definitely could've trimmed things up a bit.
I think if we're honest, there's two ways to look at this. If you like rock and roll then this is a fine album. But there are thousands of bands light-years better and more talented than Metallica. They're just not a heavy metal band anymore...
Creativity??? 😂 Get lost!
Du-dah-dat-dat is every riff of every song of this. 🙄🥱😴
I'm just glad I liked it more than hardwired.
