Don’t worry about the direction of the shell. While most shells spiral clockwise with the opening on the right (dextral), there are shells that spiral anticlockwise with the opening on the left (sinistral)

After going back and forth, procrastinating, I finally decided to make it. This was my first amigurumi project and the second thing I ever crotched. I just finished it after 4 days and it's so adorable. I'm so glad I tried it. At first I was a bit intimidated since I am a complete beginner and only ever crotched a messenger bag before this but I decided to give it a go. It turned out great. I made the shell wrong at first but then made the second one correctly (counting stitches is very important). I'm very proud of the shell. My crab's name is Hermant the hermit crab.

I looked it up and yes! Apparently over 90% of gastropod shells are so called "right-handed", so if you are looking at the opening with the sharp end pointing up, the bulk of the shell is on the left and the opening is on the right hand side. From above, the coil rotates in a clockwise direction. But there are a few species that are exclusively "left handed" and even a few who go either way. But the majority of shells are indeed a mirror image of your shell. But I am left handed, so my shell is facing the "common" direction, which makes me think maybe most gastropods are actually left handed then, for the resulting shell to turn out this way xD
Thanks for the adorable tutorial and pattern!

Excellent job on presenting and teaching this pattern. You have blended enough information for the beginner crocheter and moved on through the repeat rows for the advanced crafter. I like the edited panel of upcoming stitch rows too. Well done. your comment at the end of the shell about direction got me thinking and I tried it out, if you replace all the backpost single crochet in rows 2,4,6 and 8 with frontpost and swap the front loops and back loops in rows 9 and 11 it makes the shell spiral go in the more common direction. Love this pattern! So cute!

These conchs are fabulous! Your design skills are top-notch, mate!
I think you're a left-handed crocheter and a right-handed writer? So on your demo, the shell grows counter-clockwise, but when you're showing them in the intro it spirals clockwise. Basically, your pattern is a mirror of the shells you make. Which is funny, because while most snails _do_ spiral clockwise, there are those that do the opposite! This is a bit of a problem for the "lefties" since they have a hard time slotting together to mate with the "righties".
It's called chirality, which just means that something is a mirror image of something else - like your hands. It happens in chemistry, where right-handed and left-handed molecules can have very different properties and medical effects. For the snails, the spiral direction is actually determined by chemistry as well; the amino acid that make the proteins that the shells get built on are have chirality. Some snails have a mutation that causes them to make the "wrong" type of protein. That makes them spiral the "wrong" way!

I'm at row 17 and I've switched all the post stitches and loops, but it's still going the wrong way. Not sure what I did wrong. Do I just turn it inside out? Should I have turned it around at the beginning? Am I just dumb? I'm pretty new to crochet. I've made some simple jellyfish and some succulents and that's about it. This shell pattern uses every stitch I know. I don't really want to keep going if it's just a waste of time and I'll have to redo it anyway. I've worked on it all day.
