The algorithm recently recommended me your channel. I'm stunned by your content and how much interaction you create in your little nice community. Keep it up!
1. Elvis Costello - Man Out of Time 2. The Clash - Rock the Casbah 3. The Cure - The Hanging Gardens 4. The Jam - Town Called Malice 5. Roxy Music - More Than This ...And in Every Home just outside of the top 5, incredible song. Not quite as many great album cuts to choose from as in the 70's, but these are all great. The billboards just cannot compete.
I may be crazy, but I vote 1982 as one of the best years for music period. Very underrated. But some of the best post-punk, pop, metal and rock songs came from this year. A true fave!
I’m glad I discovered your show fellas!! I love music just like you all My 1982 pick is Only The Lonely by The Motels..I’m a sucker for sax solos lol The rest are as follows Who Can It Be Now? I just love the end of that song! Reap The Wild Wind One Thing Leads To Another Time (Clock of the Heart) It’s funny how music interests change over the years! I now listen to Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Three Days Grace amongst others. But I grew up listening to New Wave bands along with classic rock stuff, so I kinda got burned out on it. But, with your all’s vids it’s fun to go back in time!! Thanks again 😊
jason i had not listen to missing persons " spring sessions m " in 35 years probably . buy your spot on the drumming is killer and her vocal style leads to a very unique 80s synth pop album that stands out!! congrats on 7.5 k and 8 k here we go !! Pound it people ! I know your out there! Cheers!
I'm going with a catchy top 5 this year! 5. Old Town - Phil Lynott 4. The Meaning of Love - Depeche Mode 3. Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel 2. Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye 1. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson A bit more rocking Top 5 as well. 5. The Weapon - Rush 4. Little Guitars - Van Halen 3. Lovers in the Night - Toto 2. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits 1. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
Great list again! Love that you mentioned ABC! :) Here is my list of my Top-10 from 1982: 1. Dire Straits - Telegraph Road - by far the best Dire Straits song for me, great story telling by Knopfler 2. Peter Gabriel - The Rythm of the Heat - Goosebumps when the drummers come in 3. Ultravox - Hymn - my favourite single by them with Midge Ure, great lyric 4. The Comsat Angels - After the Rain - their best song, great melodic post-punk 5. Simple Minds Big Sleep - underrated Minds track from their best album. Great base line again, Derek Forbes is sooo underrated! 6. Talk Talk - The Party's Over - goosebumps all over when I hear Hollis' singing here, love the detailed synth work 7. Genesis - You Might Recall - most underrated song by Genesis, great drumming, fine melancholic Banks lyric about a love that did not last 8. The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky - great Parsons single, love Woolfsons lyrics, good lyric, childhood memories 9. ABC - The Look of Love - great single! Love the whole album! 10. Visage - The Damned Don't Cry - everyone talks about them as a one hit wonder with "Fade to Grey" but this one is even better!

One great new discovery to mention on the 1982 playlist- "Night of the Swallow" by Kate Bush. Exceptional tune. Love the mix of melodic and moody verses with the Irish folk sections. Oh yeah, in love with "Subdivisions" more than ever before and "Save It for Later" was a pretty great find too.

Fun boy three - The lunatics have taken over the asylum 8. Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the band 9. Donald Fagen - The nightfly 10. The Jam - A town called Malice
When I hear just "Todd" I don't think of Rundgren, I can only think of Bill Murray's character in the recurring SNL skit "The Nerds"... and I hear it in Gilda Radner's voice.
@@TastesLikeMusic They should listen to the 1974 Todd album over and over on headphones like I used to do at work before the pandemic. What a sonic experience. That album affirmed his right to be known by just his first name.
Favorite: Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel In no particular order : Walking on a Wire - Richard and Linda Thompson Let X=X / It Tango - Laurie Anderson Here Today - Paul McCartney Hold Me - Fleetwood Mac Southern Cross - CSN Old and Wise - Alan Parsons Project Sat in Your Lap - Kate Bush Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen Talk to Me of Mendocino - Linda Ronstadt Chinese Cafe - Joni Mitchell Like an Inca - Neil Young The Right Moment - Gerry Rafferty Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners

I love your top three too. Hey someone remembers Marshall. And I strongly favor 6 and 10. I think a lot of criticism came Jackson Browne's way for that song but it's charming.
I am late on this but in case anyone is still around to notice, here is my top 5 with runners up : 5. Only You, Yazoo 4. Eye Of The Tiger, Survivor 3. Love My Way, Psychedelic Furs 2. Just thought I’d mention how glad I was to see The Jam included on Kramzer’s list and I understand how aware the guys are , of some of the commenters ( like myself ) who have been flying the flag for that band the last few years( meaning the last few "Songs of the Year" videos) ….having said that , I’m cool that the Jam were primarily a British phenomenon and maybe don’t appeal to traditional American rock tastes ( and being a teenager in the early 80s I gravitated more to the British pop/ rock scene rather than the US)..(and this is not to offend the many devoted American Jam fans)…what I’m saying is we should be cool if (some of) our (mostly british) post punk/ new wave/ punk favourites aren’t in this channel’s wheel house or may not be to the taste of Jason/ Joe and Kramzer .. I’m learning a lot about great American pop / rock and classic rock (that i thought i knew ,but didn't…in this “community “you can safely appreciate the Carpenters as much as you might do Wire )from the Listography ( can I still say that ? 😊) gang ( and the commenters) and don’t really expect them to agree to like my personal little "cult "faves etc ( if they do, cool...if not , doesn't matter) .. I love that the channel ( and again , the commenters who have also informed me on some great music ) have their own opinions and views on the music scene of that time , which may not reflect mine.... and aren’t swayed / pressured by their fans …Don’t know if any of that made sense.. (and I’m tired..and rambling)....but I’m posting it any way ..thanks for your time 😊🙏👍
ive nominated a wire album....never the carpenters.....please keep in mind that not every one of our musical tastes always comes through on the channel....especially after just a year and a half....theres always something left unsaid....which is why we love talking with you all in the comments! - kram

I would also throw in the following songs in addition to yours : Chemistry by Rush ( their most overlooked song ) Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo I Melt With You by Modern English Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac Eminence Front by the Who Ghosts by Japan Jeanette by The English Beat Old Town by Phil Lynott ( great piano solo ! ) Only You by Yazoo While My Heart is Still Beating by Roxy Music Slit Skirts by Pete Townshend And Uncertain Smile by The The Thanks !!
Save It For Later! Yup. You nailed it, you hit right on a really big part of my High School years. i have a distinct memory of buying the LP "Special Beat Service", The Beat's third and best record. Along with More Than This from Roxy's Avalon this track was my hungover Sunday afternoon sound. (i started (and stopped) early).
Top 5 :- 1. Don't You Want Me - Human League 2. More Than This - Roxy Music 3. Poison Arrow - ABC 4. Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? - Culture Club 5. Rock the Casbah - The Clash Wild Cards :- 1. The Clash - Rock the Casbah 07. King Sunny Ade - Ja Funmi 08. George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Bad to the Bone 09. Kate Bush - Houdini 10. Willie Nelson - Always on my Mind
You are probably the only person to know the title of a King Sunny Ade song...I know the 1982 album but cannot really tell the individual tunes apart. I saw him live in Germany in 1983, the legendary Rockpalast performance - he had the whole audience under a spell in no time since almost nobody had heard such music before.
Top 5 Billboard chart songs 1982 1 Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye 2 Situation - Yazoo 3 Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel 4 Space Age Love Song - Flock of Seagulls 5 Tainted Love- Soft Cell Top 5 "Wildcards" 1982 1 I love a man in a uniform - Gang of Four 2 Beyond Belief - Elvis Costello 3 I Confess - The Beat 4 All Tensed Up - Husker Du 5 Gas Chamber - The Angry Samoans Worst chart song: Physical - Olivia Newton John
1982 was a big year for German New Wave. (Honourable Mentions: Nena - Nur geträumt, Jawoll - Rendezvous, Ixi - Detlev, The Stranglers - Golden Brown, Men Without Hats - Safety Dance) Charting Songs: 5. Men at Work - Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive (US #28, UK #31) 4. Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst) (Germany #1, also charted in US and UK as 'Major Tom (Coming Home) 3. Spliff - Das Blech (Germany #5) 2. Depeche Mode - Leave in Silence (UK #18, Germany #58) 1. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen (US #1, UK #1, Germany #6) Wildcards: 5. Icehouse - Hey Little Girl 4. Spliff - Déjà Vu 3. The Cure - A Strange Day [A great take on the Apocalypse.] 2. Hubert Kah - Marie Louise [In my humble opinion if you like New Wave in general. Such a beautiful chorus.] SONG OF THE YEAR 1982: Depeche Mode - My Secret Garden [This song is just magical. Amazing and mostly unconcentional synth lines make this song interesting and fun to listen to every time.] PS: This video really tastes like music.
I spent almost all of 1982 in Germany and remember that well - Neue Deutsche Welle. I never understood a word even though I was pretty fluent in the language at that time, but singing and talking is somehow different and they used a lot of slang in the songs. I also saw Dexy's perform in a Munich beer hall around that time but it was before the second album was released even if they already played some of the new songs.
@@roxannewalsh Maybe it's because some use dialects. Then it's harder to understand. The german language can be cruel sometimes. And slang words of course, as you said.
Nur Geträumt is by far my favorite Nena song, I will definitely buy the single one day. The only Ixi song I know is Knutschfleck, interestingly the only song by them available on Spotify,, actually three different versions of it, as if anyone needed those. Will have to check out Detlev on RUclips then.
@@beetlebum7760 i hate Knutschfleck xD Detlev is great, the lyrics are a bit strange but I don't care. My favorite Nena song Probably is Irgendwie Irgendwo Irgendwann, but Bur geträumt cones close.
HM - Nick Lowe - Too Many Teardrops, XTC - Senses Working Overtime, Roxy Music - More Than This, Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen, Prince - Little Red Corvette 5. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone (I prefer the album version, all of its 8 minutes.) 4. David Lindley - Talk to the Lawyer (He was known mainly for his L.A. session work but with El Rayo-X he also made some terrific solo albums.) 3. Robert Plant - Burning Down One Side (Plant hardly ever looked back to his old band on his solo efforts. Instead he constantly was evolving and exploring new sounds and possibilities. Not all his albums were great but always interesting and mostly good for one or other memorable highlight.) 2. Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding (Elvis Costello's comment on the Falkland war, this was recorded as an alternative version since Clive Langer who had written the music had originally intended it for Wyatt, not for Costello himself.) 1. Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul - Forever (Another single Lyin' in a Bed of Fire from the same album was just as great.)
1. I know you’re not picking songs for their significance in pop music, but some mention of “The Message” seems appropriate. 2. After almost 40 years, I still don’t know how to categorize the coolness that is “Beyond Belief”. 3. “Wanderlust” should have achieved the popularity that the insipid “Ebony & Ivory” enjoyed.
(I ignore the Billboard. Any song released this year is eligible. One song per artist/band unless they released more than one album) 10) Eye Market - Black Uhuru 09) Blood Bitch - Cocteau Twins 08) Ghetto Defendant - The Clash 07) The Full Bug - Van Halen 06) Avalon - Roxy Music 05) Mesopotamia - The B-52's 04) Someone, Somewhere, in Summertime - Simple Minds 03) Digital Man - Rush 02) A Strange Day - The Cure 01) Melt! - Siouxsie & the Banshees
Good Clash pick. I thought about Overpowered by Funk from that Clash album, but in the end I had to go with Rock the Casbah. I just can't resist that song.
I am still trying to find a slot somewhere for Black Uhuru in any year. One of those artists always on my candidates list but who never made it so far. This seems to be the fate of reggae in general even for those who like it...there is always something I like a tiny bit more.
Man what a year... 10. Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief 9. The Fall - The Classical 8. Cocteau Twins - Wax and Wane 7. The Stranglers - Golden Brown 6. Simple Minds - Promised You a Miracle 5. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean 4. Descendents - Bikeage 3. The Cure - A Strange Day 2. Kate Bush - Suspended in Gaffa 1. Laurie Anderson - O, Superman
So weird. I know the album came out in ‘77 but my 7” vinyl for The Passenger/Nightclubbing says 1982. I’m gonna go ahead and edit this one…there were loads competing for the spot anyways.
@@afermata949 Actually...I did a little research and there was a A side single release of The Passenger in 1982. Back in 1977 it was only released as a B-side (for Success). Most likely that is the edition you have.
For me Senses Working Overtime by XTC was the song of 1982..... I couldn't believe it the first time i heard it in early 82 & almost 40 years later i still cant!!

The English Beat song might not win, but it's the best of the three, for me. The other two songs are also pretty great, but there's just something about "Save It For Later" that makes me want to listen to it again and again.

BILLBOARD 1. *Africa by Toto #1* (Memes aside, this is ridiculously smooth and unique AOR with great harmonies.) 2. *Eye in the Sky by The Alan Parsons Project #3* (Infuses paranoia to what is otherwise a pretty ballad. Really cool.) 3. *Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) by Elton John #13* (A classy, melodic ode to Lennon. So many nice production touches.) 4. *Steppin' Out by Joe Jackson #6* (Jazzy piano and synthy disco bass somehow work. It's really all about that verse melody that carries this song.) 5. *Rock the Casbah by The Clash #8* (Infectious pop/rock with a latin flavor.) WILDCARD 1. WINNER: *More Than This by Roxy Music* (Dreamy, atmospheric, and immaculate. Shocked it never charted on the Hot 100.) 2. *Senses Working Overtime by XTC* (Simply great upbeat early jangle pop.) 3. *Temptation by New Order* (The almost clinical beat takes us on an alt dance workout, a formula that they'll continue to perfect in years to come.) 4. *Take a Chance with Me by Roxy Music* (Another underappreciated sophisti-pop classic off of Avalon.) 5. *Subdivisions by Rush* (My absolute favorite of theirs; I prefer their synthier 80s sound as heard here. Neat commentary to boot.) TOP 10 Wildcard HM: Ghosts by The Jam This to me is where 80s pop fully runs free. So many great pop songs on the Billboard and wildcard list. Probably my second favorite period for radio after that great mid-60s/early 70s run. This year was about making a lot of tough cuts, while it's looking like the next will be incredible at the top. WORST TOP 40: Daddy's Home by Cliff Richard #23 (Good call by Kram. Originally had it as an '81 runner-up, but looks like it didn't chart until January. Quite an insipid cover.) WORST Runner Up: Young Love by Air Supply #38 Body Language by Queen #11 Valley Girl by Frank and Moon Zappa #32

I used to hate "Africa", but it started to grow on me the last 10 years or so. It's still a bit awkward lyrically, but musically, it's a pretty interesting song. That and "Temptation" were near misses for me.
Take a Chance With Me and While My Heart Is Still Beating are highlights off a great album Africa is definitely one of the most popular songs of the year. I think Down Under is as well.
You guys really missed one here. The Message by Grandmaster Flash is absolutely my #1. Before this song, rap songs just talked about partying and getting girls. This was the first rap song to really talk about what was going on in their neighborhoods. It set the template for all of the socially conscious rap that came after it. Without this song you don’t get a Public Enemy, N.W.A., Tupac, Biggie, or Nas.
In '80 Jason said next 2 years bad and I was thinking '81 last of the good years for me. We're both wrong as you reminded me of lots of great songs this year so I stole Love My Way, Back On The Chain Gang and Don't Change. Also totally agree with everything said about You Got Lucky, and absolutely love how vibe of video compliments track.

My Favorite Singles, of 1982: “Steppin’ Out” - Joe Jackson “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” - Culture Club “Africa” - Toto “Hungry Like the Wolf” - Duran Duran “Down Under” - Men at Work Album Picks + (some singles/previously or in the future will be released): “Blue Eyes” - Elton John “Gypsy” - Fleetwood Mac “Jack & Diane” - John Cougar “Real Men” - Joe Jackson “Thriller” - Michael Jackson Worst single: “Pac-Man Fever” - Buckner & Garcia
Great number one picks. BTW, Ryan, Save it for Later, if you are not aware, has got just as much sexual innuendo as Little Red Corvetter. The title alone is a pun. And Pete Townshend covered the song on The Deep End Live. His version is quite good...but not as good as the English Beat.
My top 5 from 1982 5 ABC - Date Stamp 4 Dexy's - Jackie Wilson Said 3 The Jam - Precious 2 XTC - Senses Working Overtime 1 The Jam - Town Called Malice
I’d probably go with “Beat It” by Michael Jackson for my SOTY (Thriller was also my album of the year if we don’t count The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads - “Billie Jean” is also narrowly behind it). Other contenders: “Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, “Cynical Girl” by Marshall Crenshaw, “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” by Prince (any of the first 4 songs on 1999 might do though - I voted “Little Red Corvette” in the poll), “Subdivisions” by Rush and “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC.
I’ll continue the Subdivisions eulogising. Contains my favourite Neil Peart couplet, the dual meaning of adolescents being stuck in the suburbs with both being: “In between the bright lights And the far, unlit unknown”. Also features some of his most complex drumming, yet is also so memorable. Speaking of great drumming, I have to give a shout-out to “Arrogance gave him up” by The Associates. A synth-pop instrumental with hard rock drumming. Only in 1982!
It’s been a while since I posted on one of these. Do plan on going back and doing the earlier years that I missed. 1982 is a very good year, way better than 1981, but not as good as the next couple of years. For that reason I’m pulling a Joe and putting my song of the year on this list, instead of ‘83 when it was released as a single. Singles: *1. 1999 - Prince -* One of those times where the single version is way better than the album version which is too long and has that weird intro. One of if not the greatest synth piece, ever. *2. Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders -* Written of course for James Honeyman-Scott but is really universal for anybody dealing with loss. A timeless work with a lovely guitar figure. *3. Hurts So Good - John Cougar Mellencamp -* The verses are rather pedestrian but that chorus is fantastic and whatever chord they hit on “love” weirdly really makes the song for me. *4. You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -* I think the synth gives it a bit dated feeling (though strangely, doesn’t seem to apply to Prince), but Tom is at his nasty best here. *5. I Melt With You - Modern English -* Surprised this only made it to 78 on the Hot 100. I oddly love the drums on this one especially the double crash. Non-Singles: *1. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson -* Song of the Year. Yeah it didn’t come out as a single till 1983 (January 3) but of course Thriller the album came out at the end of 1982. An absolute masterpiece and one of the finest vocals ever. The amount of emotion delivered in the line “his eyes were like mine” is astounding. One of my top 15 songs of all time. *2. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen -* the catchiest song on Nebraska, but still bleak as hell. A great vocal from Bruce (whom like Todd only needs a first name). *3. Highway Patrolmen - Bruce Springsteen -* But Bruce goes even bleaker. I think one of Bruce’s most underrated songs. *4. Walking on a Wire - Richard and Linda Thompson -* a sort of obscure but beautiful track. Linda Thompson has a lovely voice on this ballad from one of the best divorce albums ever. *5. Never Say Never - Romeo Void -* A fantastic groove, and singer Deborah Iyall delivers the lyrics with some incredible badassery. Great video as always. Looking very much forward to 1983.
A pattern is emerging. Like last year, I barely scraped together a Hot 100 top 5, and had to turn away the teeming masses of wildcard songs. 1982 Billboard Hot 100 Charts 1. Since You're Gone - The Cars - My favorite track from the Cars. 2. Cat People - David Bowie and Giorgio Moroder - Best version of this song. Revived by Quentin Tarantino, it actually works better in his movie than in Cat People. 3. Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash - Not close to my favorite, but a great tune anyway. 4. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Pure pop perfection. I first heard of this band through reading an album review. I went out and bought the vinyl, and it was nothing like I expected. Mostly not good, but one stellar winning track kept it from being a total loss. 5. Tainted Love - Soft Cell - Great tune for the clubs. 1982 Wildcards 1. Man's Best Friend/Loopzilla - George Clinton - Funkiest. Track. Ever. 2. Atomic Dog - George Clinton - If there was a soundtrack to my life, this song would play every time I entered a room. 3. I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby - Kid Creole and the Coconuts - So much sass. So much attitude. Just fun. 4. DMSR - Prince - Possibly my favorite Prince track. 5. Never Say Never - Romeo Void - This song has grown on me over the years. 6. Let's Pretend We're Married - Prince - Second favorite Prince track. 7. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits - Guitar symphony. 8. A Slow Song - Joe Jackson - Over the top ballad that makes the album special. 9. Mesopotamia - B-52s - Weird, David Byrne production that failed commercially, but works for me. 10. Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy - Kid Creole and the Coconuts Song of the Year: Man's Best Friend/Loopzilla Unable to record as Parliament or Funkadelic due to legal proceedings, George Clinton's first solo album is a banger with the two top songs of the year. Note- Corrected to reflect Cat People charting in 1982.
"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" wasn't on your '81 or '82 list? C'mon now... That shit is on par with (1984's) "When Doves Cry". It's brilliant! Would love to see a group-wide Daryl Hall John Oates discography rundown. Great show. Hope you all keep doing it together.
My Top 10 Of 1982 - # 1 Associates - No , # 2 The Message - Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five # 3 A Strange Day - The Cure # 4 The Main Thing - Roxy Music # 5 - The Hungry Wolf - X # 6 Ghosts - The Jam # 7 Runaway - XTC # 8 Someone Somewhere ( Summertime ) - Simpleminds # 9 After The Rain - The Comsat Angels & # 10 Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye. The Best Album of the year was the pop masterpiece The Lexicon Of Love by ABC.
This was a richer year in music than I had remembered. It was hard to narrow down my list, what with jam-packed albums from Marshall Crenshaw, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, the [English] Beat, and others--not to mention, unlike in surrounding years, some unusually strong songs on the charts. Top Ten: 10) “Burning Down the House,” Talking Heads 9) “Losing True,” The Roches 8) “Mary Anne,” Marshall Crenshaw 7) “Back on the Chain Gang,” The Pretenders 6) “I.G.Y.,” Donald Fagen 5) “Cleaning Windows,” Van Morrison 4) “Breaking Us in Two,” Joe Jackson 3) “Beyond Belief,” Elvis Costello & The Attractions 2) “Come on Eileen,” Dexy’s Midnight Runners 1) “I Confess,” The [English] Beat HONORABLE MENTIONS “Senses Working Overtime,” XTC “My Edge of the Razor,” John Hiatt “Rock the Casbah,” The Clash “Temporary Beauty,” Graham Parker & The Rumour “Sun, Son (Shining on the Water),” Kate & Anna McGarrigle “Black Coffee in Bed,” Squeeze “Wild and Blue,” John Anderson “Gypsy,” Fleetwood Mac “Man Out of Time,” Elvis Costello & The Attractions “Sole Salvation,” The [English] Beat “You’ve Got a Lover,” Ricky Skaggs “More Than This,” Roxy Music “Empty Garden,” Elton John “Cynical Girl,” Marshall Crenshaw “This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody),” Talking Heads “Goin’ Downhill,” John Anderson “Love Over and Over,” Kate & Anna McGarrigle “Human Hands,” Elvis Costello & The Attractions “Dweller on the Threshold,” Van Morrison “Steppin’ Out,” Joe Jackson
@@davidellis5141 Arggh! You're right: 1983, not 1982. I thought I'd remembered it well, too. Ah, well, I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger" which was a massive hit, topping both the US and UK charts. The demo version they used at the end of the Rocky 3 movie was also good.
hope ok to mention here. Ottawa lost a music icon Friday. Les Emmerson (age 77) of The Five Man Electrical Band and writer of "Signs" (1971), which sold over 1.5 million copies. Many great stories, and such a humble man. Throughts and prayers to his family
Sorry to hear this. I was eleven when "Signs" came out; it became my favorite song and one of the first 45s I bought. I liked the B-side, too: "Hello Melinda Goodbye."

@@TimeToGetAlone Fair enough. Good old wikipedia says Billboard peak 44 , 82 but I guess you can't trust that source too much these days. Never mind..i'll stick with it this year. I just love that song...my way 😉😊
This is where the 80’s really start. Great chart year, also in Holland. Kramz, I wonder if you’re familiar with Tom Petty’s Long After Dark album. It gets panned everywhere, but I think it’s his most underrated album by far. You gotta check it out!
Some great picks this week guys. Love Stepping Out and Town Called Malice. Also have a soft spot for Allentown! Joe gets my vote with Little Red Corvette. It tops my list as well. Pure pop euphoria. Runners up Dire Straits Telegraph Road and The Stranglers Golden Brown.
10. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen 9. Southern Cross - CS&N 8. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ - Michael Jackson 7. More Than This - Roxy Music 6. Rio - Duran Duran 5. Steppin’ Out - Joe Jackson 4. Oh yeah, you’re right about Burning Down the House. My bad. I guess I’d therefore add either Billy Jean or Straight To Hell in its absence, although not in the same spot.
“Never Too Late for Love” by Warren Zevon. Not only is it my favorite song of 1982, but it is probably in my top 5 songs of all-time. Words cannot express how powerful I think it is.

Hey Brent - Glad you posted for 82. Outstanding SOTY! I actually have Marshall Crenshaw's debut album in my collection and somehow forgot that particular song! Even now listening to it was a new experience. (Shoulda been a hit.) Nice to see that we have a lot of picks in common for this year. . . . I like that Gordon Lightfoot song as well (not familiar at all w his post-70s material). Particullarly enjoy the clever lyrics on this one. Later, my friend.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Good morning NVG. Thanks for checking out my list. Nice to see us liking a lot of the same things 🙂 Glad you got to re-listen to Cynical Girl. Yeah, in a perfect world, that song would have been huge. Happy to hear you liked Triangle as well. I only found that when doing my list research. Have listened to it quite a lot in the past several weeks. I'll be interested to see if, in my estimation, that was GL's last outstanding song. In any case, certainly a legacy of memorable music. Hope this day finds you doing well my friend. Talk with you later :)
@@NaughtyVampireGod Yes, I'm feeling pretty sure about 8 songs for my top 10. Some more listening and assessing in the next few days should get me there 🙂 Are you still hoping to get to 85 and 89 this week?
@@brentjackson6839 Yes, Sir! I should be posting 85 no later than tomorrow. Will let you know. At this point it looks a though REM will get the SOTY which will give them 3 winners for the 80s (SOTY for 1984 is So. Central Rain, and 1987 is The One I Love). But . . still listening . . Dire Straits also have several great songs in 85. . . . No REM songs in 89 (like I said, I go by the "album rule"), but there's excellent albums by the Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smithereens, Pixies, The Pogues and more all in contention.

1982 was a strong year for good singles. A few honorable mentions I couldn't get in there. Love Plus One by Haircut One Hundred, Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz, and Psychobabble by the Alan Parsons Project. Otherwise.... Billboard Hits 5. Abracadabra by the Steve Miller Band-my PE teacher used to play this song for us in class when I was in 5th grade. 4. Rosanna by Toto. What a great groove, the drumming on this song. 3. Heat of the Moment by Asia. 2. Centerfold by J. Geils Band- when I was a kid, the innuendo was over my head, but the catchiness was undeniable. 1. See below Wild Cards 5. Love Will Turn You Around-Kenny Rogers- I like how this understated song reminds you that special someone in your life can make all the difference. A sweet emotion. 4. The Loved One by Elvis Costello- Hard to choose from many great songs on "Imperial Bedroom" but I like the jumpy piano on this one. 3. Highway Patrolman by Bruce Springsteen- A story song about two brothers. Bruce nails it with the vocals and songwriting. Great cover by Johnny Cash years later. 2. I Can't Hold On by Squeeze- He's dancing in a club, and he sees a beautiful girl, but he's shy to go up to her. I can relate to that. 1. His House, Her Home by Squeeze- Domestic issues shown accurately by Chris Difford's lyrics married to a lovely piano line. Worst song- Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder- I love these two, but this song is cloying after a few listens. Song of the Year- Steppin' Out by Joe Jackson. Great vocals on this and a great piano/ synth beat!!
J Geils Band are one of those tragic cases where a band became successful and popular with their worst output. They were a really great band, especially live, in the 70s.
@@roxannewalsh I had actually heard that J. Geils were much better in the 70's, and they received some blowback for seeming to sell out for a hit. I have not heard any of their music outside of this (craptacuclar?!) album. However, when Peter Wolf went solo, I did like some of his late 90's, early 2000's output, it's kind of whiskey soaked and Stonesy-ish with a late night vibe.
@@adamhasideas6813 I would sign and seal this analysis wholeheartedly. Their 1972 Full House is one of the best live albums ever, even if it is just a single disc (packed fair and square and no air).
@@roxannewalsh I finally got around to listening to the Full House live album, and I have to give it to you, it is excellent! 82 was the year my tastes started going from prog to new wave and Missing Persons was a big reason that happened. I was following Terri Bozzio since UK warmed up Jethro Tull on the Stormwatch tour. I saw Missing Persons live on their first US tour in an old movie theater, 10th row. Bozzio is 1 of rocks premiere drummers. Also perhaps my best warm up band experience was seeing INXS warm up Men at Work from my first front row concert seating. They blew Men away. I also saw that Utopia tour, not great seats, it was a day of choice and I was a little disappointed at the time he played no old solo stuff. Jason is usually the guy I relate to the least on his picks but for 82 he was on👍
Special shoutout to a band that was an HM for me last year and also this year, and I don't think they're going to make it in subsequent years: The Gap Band. Loved Burn Rubber in 81 and they had two outstanding hits in 82 with You Dropped a Bomb On Me and Early In the Morning. A different couple of techno funk tunes made my top 5's this year, but the Gap Band was oh so close.
@@markgatica12 Yes. They have missed my top 5 just barely two years in a row. I can't recall if they had any other chart hits after this year, so I'm afraid they may not come back around. Lotta great techno funk in the 80s. A golden era for sure.
1982 - a good year for songs, maybe not singles or albums 1. Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs - a great lovely catchy downbeat tale of hard love that includes lines like " "There's an army on the dance floor it's fashion with a gun my love (recalling Nazis?) and there's emptiness behind their eyes, there's dust in all their hearts (more dust than Kansas imagined); they just want to steal us all and tear us all apart. But not in Love My Way, it's a new road; I follow where my mind goes. Todd Rundgren produced this record of the MTV video Richard goes mad like a Klaus Kinski scene from Herzog " Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) about a power hungry madman (Kinski in real life to). Love my Way is an affectionate, creepy, haunting video will stop your world and melt with you I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race never comprehending the race had long gone by. Another fine song from 1982 by Modern English.
With an ability to be as brooding as other Post Punk bands or as cheerfully infections as other New Wave groups (please , not Katrina and the Wave (a catchy bouncy song that is not new wave), the Psychedelic Furs were actually quite well rounded and deserve better than to be primarily known as the “Pretty in Pink” band. They should be in the Rock Hall of Fame. Todd made it, they should too. Tie for 1 "Aint even Done with the Night" - John Mellencamp. 1980 release I forgot. ruclips.net/video/9CHvDPRWgJ4/видео.html . Handsome Johnny sings this live with some crazy backup singers. "You got your hands in my back pockets/ And Sam Cooke's singin' on the radio/ You say that I'm the boy who can make it all come true/ Well, I'm tellin' ya that I don't know if I know what to do/ Well Alright hold tight. I imagine nobody else likes it much
You're not alone, Ain't Even Done With The Night is damn good. And that clip, with John and the boys dressed like it's Valentine's Day or something is priceless.
The algorithm recently recommended me your channel. I'm stunned by your content and how much interaction you create in your little nice community. Keep it up!

...And in Every Home just outside of the top 5, incredible song.
I love music just like you all
My 1982 pick is Only The Lonely by The Motels..I’m a sucker for sax solos lol
The rest are as follows
Who Can It Be Now?
I just love the end of that song!
Reap The Wild Wind
One Thing Leads To Another
Time (Clock of the Heart)
It’s funny how music interests change over the years!
5. Old Town - Phil Lynott

A bit more rocking Top 5 as well.
5. The Weapon - Rush

3. Lovers in the Night - Toto
2. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits
1. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
Great list again! Love that you mentioned ABC! :)
Here is my list of my Top-10 from 1982:
1. Dire Straits - Telegraph Road - by far the best Dire Straits song for me, great story telling by Knopfler
2. Peter Gabriel - The Rythm of the Heat - Goosebumps when the drummers come in
3. Ultravox - Hymn - my favourite single by them with Midge Ure, great lyric
4. The Comsat Angels - After the Rain - their best song, great melodic post-punk
5. Simple Minds Big Sleep - underrated Minds track from their best album. Great base line again, Derek Forbes is sooo underrated!
6. Talk Talk - The Party's Over - goosebumps all over when I hear Hollis' singing here, love the detailed synth work
7. Genesis - You Might Recall - most underrated song by Genesis, great drumming, fine melancholic Banks lyric about a love that did not last
8. The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky - great Parsons single, love Woolfsons lyrics, good lyric, childhood memories
9. ABC - The Look of Love - great single! Love the whole album!

This has been the hardest year in finding the Billboard picks as I had to leave off so many great songs that didn't make the charts.

Worst Song- Even The Nights Are Better-Air Supply
I believe that's my choice for worst song as well. The title alone is cringeworthy.
A tough year to rank my favourite songs, so many good ones. I go with: (But the order can change from day to day)
1. Fleetwood Mac - Gipsy Maybe Stevie Nicks best song
2. Culture Club - Time One of the best pop songs of all time in my opinion

When I hear just "Todd" I don't think of Rundgren, I can only think of Bill Murray's character in the recurring SNL skit "The Nerds"... and I hear it in Gilda Radner's voice.
Sounds like you need to listen to more Todd then. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic They should listen to the 1974 Todd album over and over on headphones like I used to do at work before the pandemic. What a sonic experience. That album affirmed his right to be known by just his first name.

Love your top three!
I love your top three too. Hey someone remembers Marshall. And I strongly favor 6 and 10. I think a lot of criticism came Jackson Browne's way for that song but it's charming.

8. Here today - Paul McCartney (only fitting McCartney would write the most touching tribute to John Lennon)
9. I'm not that man anymore - Survivor
10. Beat it - Michael Jackson
It’s good to see early Marillion get some recognition.
@@bryanbyrde8338 Marillion is one of my favourite bands and this is quite an amazing track, trying to be Genesis but very good at it!

2. "Your Imagination" - Hall & Oates
3. "Nice Girls" - Eye To Eye
4. "Take It Away" - Paul McCartney
5. "Early In The Morning" - The Gap Band
Gotta have Dazz Band, Whip It on there!
@@TastesLikeMusic I thought about "Let It Whip"! I think the synths slightly obscure the bass, not to mention the rawhide fills.
"Forget Me Nots" just missed my list.
(and I’m tired..and rambling)....but I’m posting it any way ..thanks for your time 😊🙏👍
Don't forget, these guys are adventurous and love stepping outside of their "wheelhouse." I have no doubt they will get to the Jam sooner or later.
ive nominated a wire album....never the carpenters.....please keep in mind that not every one of our musical tastes always comes through on the channel....especially after just a year and a half....theres always something left unsaid....which is why we love talking with you all in the comments! - kram

Good picks. You got Lucky is my favorite Tom Petty song. The synths are really sinister sounding with that cool groove underneath.

PS: This video really tastes like music.

4. David Lindley - Talk to the Lawyer (He was known mainly for his L.A. session work but with El Rayo-X he also made some terrific solo albums.)
3. Robert Plant - Burning Down One Side (Plant hardly ever looked back to his old band on his solo efforts. Instead he constantly was evolving and exploring new sounds and possibilities. Not all his albums were great but always interesting and mostly good for one or other memorable highlight.)
2. Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding (Elvis Costello's comment on the Falkland war, this was recorded as an alternative version since Clive Langer who had written the music had originally intended it for Wyatt, not for Costello himself.)
1. Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul - Forever (Another single Lyin' in a Bed of Fire from the same album was just as great.)
I gotta say, the Wyatt version does nothing for me. Maybe I’m just too much of a EC fanboy. - Joe

2. After almost 40 years, I still don’t know how to categorize the coolness that is “Beyond Belief”.
3. “Wanderlust” should have achieved the popularity that the insipid “Ebony & Ivory” enjoyed.

5. *Subdivisions by Rush* (My absolute favorite of theirs; I prefer their synthier 80s sound as heard here. Neat commentary to boot.)
TOP 10 Wildcard HM:
Ghosts by The Jam
This to me is where 80s pop fully runs free.
Quite an insipid cover.)
WORST Runner Up:
Young Love by Air Supply #38
Body Language by Queen #11
Valley Girl by Frank and Moon Zappa #32

I used to hate "Africa", but it started to grow on me the last 10 years or so. It's still a bit awkward lyrically, but musically, it's a pretty interesting song. That and "Temptation" were near misses for me.
Take a Chance With Me and While My Heart Is Still Beating are highlights off a great album
Africa is definitely one of the most popular songs of the year.

Another Dream Syndicate mention. Hooray! One of my faves.
My Favorite Singles, of 1982:
“Steppin’ Out” - Joe Jackson
“Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” - Culture Club
“Africa” - Toto
“Hungry Like the Wolf” - Duran Duran
“Down Under” - Men at Work
Album Picks + (some singles/previously or in the future will be released):
“Blue Eyes” - Elton John
“Gypsy” - Fleetwood Mac
“Jack & Diane” - John Cougar
“Real Men” - Joe Jackson
“Thriller” - Michael Jackson
Worst single:
“Pac-Man Fever” - Buckner & Garcia
Great number one picks. BTW, Ryan, Save it for Later, if you are not aware, has got just as much sexual innuendo as Little Red Corvetter. The title alone is a pun. And Pete Townshend covered the song on The Deep End Live. His version is quite good...but not as good as the English Beat.
My top 5 from 1982
5 ABC - Date Stamp
4 Dexy's - Jackie Wilson Said
3 The Jam - Precious
2 XTC - Senses Working Overtime
1 The Jam - Town Called Malice
Good list. You know Jackie Wilson Said was written and song by Van Morrison. Both versions are great. ABC is overlooked. "Town Called" is great.
Nice mention of Cynical Girl. My 1982 SOTY :)
I’ll continue the Subdivisions eulogising. Contains my favourite Neil Peart couplet, the dual meaning of adolescents being stuck in the suburbs with both being:
“In between the bright lights
And the far, unlit unknown”.
Singles:
*1. 1999 - Prince -* One of those times where the single version is way better than the album version which is too long and has that weird intro.
Non-Singles:
Good list. I've got a Cougar Mellencamp song coming next year. Maybe Pretenders and MJ too.
Billie.Mean is my face MJ song. If you like the Band, check out their Atlantic City cover.
A pattern is emerging. Like last year, I barely scraped together a Hot 100 top 5, and had to turn away the teeming masses of wildcard songs.
1982 Billboard Hot 100 Charts
1982 Wildcards
10. Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy - Kid Creole and the Coconuts
Song of the Year: Man's Best Friend/Loopzilla
Unable to record as Parliament or Funkadelic due to legal proceedings, George Clinton's first solo album is a banger with the two top songs of the year.
Note- Corrected to reflect Cat People charting in 1982.
Cat People charted in the hot 100 in 82.
@@burmajones803 In that case, it slots at #2 on my charts list, and 1999 gets bumped.

10) “Burning Down the House,” Talking Heads

“Love Over and Over,” Kate & Anna McGarrigle
“Human Hands,” Elvis Costello & The Attractions
“Dweller on the Threshold,” Van Morrison
“Steppin’ Out,” Joe Jackson
Although I picked a different song, it's great to see The (English) Beat at number 1.
That Talking Heads album & single came out in Summer of 1983. I remember it well 👍
@@davidellis5141 Arggh! You're right: 1983, not 1982. I thought I'd remembered it well, too. Ah, well, I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
@@harmonium8198 I figured I should let you know because you'd wonder why nobody else had picked it. Have a Great Weekend 👍

Apparently Love My Way doesn't chart until '83 (was my #1 until I found that out). Guess I'll save a home for it there.
@@TimeToGetAlone Fair enough. Good old wikipedia says Billboard peak 44 , 82 but I guess you can't trust that source too much these days. Never mind..i'll stick with it this year. I just love that song...my way 😉😊
You forgot Phil Collins: You Can't Hurry Love.

@@TimeToGetAlone Yeah, it's '83.

@@brentjackson6839 Good morning Brent. Hope you have a great day, my friend. Workin' on '89 list?
1) The Cure-The Figurehead

Subdivisions is a great cut!
1982 was a strong year for good singles. A few honorable mentions I couldn't get in there. Love Plus One by Haircut One Hundred, Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz, and Psychobabble by the Alan Parsons Project. Otherwise....
Billboard Hits
1. See below
Wild Cards
@@adamhasideas6813 Get the Bloodshot album. "give it to me" is a banger!
@@roxannewalsh I finally got around to listening to the Full House live album, and I have to give it to you, it is excellent! I really enjoyed "Serves you Right to Suffer" and "Hard Drivin' Man" but the whole album is great. Thanks for the recommendation. Going to check out some more of their 70's output!

Gap Band IV ! Cool album 😎
Love The Gap Band!
Gap Band just missed my top 5
@@markgatica12 Yes. They have missed my top 5 just barely two years in a row. I can't recall if they had any other chart hits after this year, so I'm afraid they may not come back around. Lotta great techno funk in the 80s. A golden era for sure.
yearning for your love & outstanding are both good contenders for 83
I voted for one for "Save It For Later". Now I want a The English beat ranking(full stop).
Heck yeah
1982 - a good year for songs, maybe not singles or albums
