I remember this being shown to exist about 10 years ago. Someone was showing the production of plastic rice. After all this time I had dismissed that it might just be 5% or 10% of a trusted brand. I assumed it was going to be used for product photography or displays. I thought if you ever encountered it, it would be the entire bag of rice and one would be able to tell they were buying counterfeit product. This though...? Now I wonder how much I've consumed.

There was a case in the Philippines of imported rice from CHINA. People notice a very notable appearance of the imported rice once cooked compared to the one that they used to have which were grown locally. They said that it felt and looked like plastic and the government went after the importing company who happens to be of Chinese origin living in the Philippines. That's why here in Canada I stay away from buying any type of food that's made in China.
Even those made in China costume jewelry that women use, there was an investigative report by a Canadian network that there were a high level of lead that were found on these fake jewelries. Subsequently, these jewelries were pulled out of the sales floor.

I found this... it may not be plastic as much as wax: “Plastic rice is not made from plastic, it is rice that has been stored for up to 10 years and not stored particularly well. The rice had become badly contaminated with molds and instead of that nice white color, had turned into an unpleasant green color and what the fraudsters had done was they had taken that rice out of the stores and bleached it to get back the white color.
“The only problem was whenever you bleach rice it loses the nice shiny surface so to get that back they sprayed it with paraffin wax. With that paraffin coating on it, it didn’t cook properly, hence the reason it was called plastic rice.”
STILL...not something (bleach/wax) you want to eat even if this is what is going on.

The video is wrong on many accounts. It is probably a fake hype vid that exploits 'urban legends' of fake 'plastic' foods being in circulation. Rice in general tends to be floaty, it's unnatural for it to uniformly lie on the bottom of the bowl like that. And there is no low-tech unexpensive polymer that would soften enough when boiled to be mistaken for boiled grain. The final slide with the baking tray may be on to something - there may be some wax-like substance constituting a part of those grains, which is also unhealthy, but most of these tips won't help you find it.

It's a myth, the person giving the demonstration on the video tampered with the rice. Google "plastic Rice Myth and you'll see lots of proof and scientific articles where they analysed thousands of samples. All fakery made initially by western racists to "prove" how Chinese and Vietnamese companies are endangering westerners by tampering with food. The myth spread to Africa and now India. Do the video test on your rice, it will show that your rice is good (because you haven't tampered with it like the fraudster did to make the video). Fact is the plastic that is supposedly contaminating rice costs far more than the rice does so adding an expensive product to a cheap product to make more money is just plain silly.

Expert who says it could have been actual rice that had been poorly stored for up to a decade.
Chris Elliott, professor of food safety and founder of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast, said he has been investigating rice fraud for a number of years.
“That all started off by lots of reports coming from different parts of the world about what was called plastic rice. People were claiming that they were being sold rice that was made from plastic. As someone who studies food fraud I was quite interested in this,” he told Food Safety News while he was in Edinburgh to meet the head of the Scottish Food Crime and Incidents Unit (SFCIU).
“The first thing, when we looked at the economics, actually plastic is more expensive than rice so you (know) it is not made from plastic. Then you think why would people think they are eating rice made from plastic? It took quite a long time to uncover what we think was going on and I spent some time in South East Asia asking lots of questions.
“Plastic rice is not made from plastic, it is rice that has been stored for up to 10 years and not stored particularly well.
With that paraffin coating on it, it didn’t cook properly, hence the reason it was called plastic rice.” Source www.foodsafetynews.com/2019/10/so-called-plastic-rice-could-have-been-the-real-deal-but-stored-for-a-decade/#:~:text=Reports%20about%20%E2%80%9Cplastic%20rice%E2%80%9D%20are,for%20up%20to%20a%20decade.

For anyone interested this started with fake rice versus real rice. Fake rice grains are extruded material made from rice, rice castings, and other grain. No plastic. In fact, plastic would interfere with processing. The fake rice is made similar to imitation crab...which is used globally. Fake rice ingredients were originally used as feed. As rice prices have risen sharply, this form of a rice based food hit the shelves. The difference in cooking, the response to heating, and burning smells are the caused by chaff and other grains in the mixture.
That this scare started with Chinese products was no surprise since they had been caught introducing plastic into animal food two decades ago. There are stories of Chinese baby food containing adulteratants. Many of these were confirmed by SE Asian labs in areas where the products were sold.

One of the comments said that "plastic" rice was introduced up to 20 years ago. What will it take for countries to protect their citizens from bad food? Food safety and sovereignty should never be compromised - no matter how poor the poorest citizen is, they deserve food safety. Even rich countries have poor people for one reason or another and how we treat them is indicative of where our hearts and minds lay. We need to keep each other safe.

The only way countries can protect its citizens is for those citizens to keep their government in check. Hold politicians accountable for their actions and policies.

I just checked all my rice. The rice in the freezer has the chemicals that you can’t even pronounce, it had to go! My Minute rice just says precooked jasmine rice. And my yellow rice just lists rice and flavorings that I know what they are.
I learned to read labels. Like maple syrup is not all maple syrup. Some of it has corn syrup added. And I was going to buy some cheaper butter, but after reading the label it said “not fit for baking or cooking.” Hello?? And same with anything that says it’s iron fortified. That means it actually had tiny bits of iron metal in it! That can be collected with a magnet. So, buyers beware!
