My friend Stacy has some terrific ideas about getting your paperwork in order. *One note though, please check with your accountant before destroying any important paperwork - especially tax records.* Хобби
I use a particular drawer for important bills, but for those who can't afford a filing system or don't have a drawer, You might use a box that alcohol casks were delivered in, or some other free strong cardboard box that came from a delivery.
Large flat cardboard pieces can be used as separators between subjects.
It was very helpful to see how you sorted through your papers and the strategy for making tabs. Thanks so much for sharing.
You are most amazing organise person, who teaches everyone these rules. Thank you dear Peter!
Also a tip... my hubby said that fireproof save doesn't mean it is really fireproof. So make sure you find out how hot they can get before they go up in smoke.
My hubby and I used the KonMari method to get rid of papers and recycled 17 bags of recycle/shred. It really helps the filing system when you can get rid of enough papers that there is room in the filing cabinet. I'm going to look into that tax thing. If I only need to keep the files 3 years...great!
***** How true! Oh, and you'll probably be audited next year because of your comment. Ha!
Excellent organizing tips here.......love this gal :)
Well done with the file tutorial. It would be great if we didn't have to keep anything, but alas! Though some old schoolers might think it's risky to keep files in the cloud, I recently started using the Files app on Apple's iOs to save physical room for documents. It's so easy to scan a document, assign a folder, and add a filename, then shred the document. I'll plan to back it up to CD now that I have a SuperDrive . Historically, I've been a paper filer and I find the 1/3 tab folders troublesome because I don't like it when they get out of visual order and they will. Initially, it's pleasing to see them L, M, R, L, M, R, etc. The thing is, they can get out of order when a folder is added later, or one mislabels a category during the initial setup. I found it best for me to buy folders with the same tab location, i.e. all left tabs. A flexible alternative, regardless of why folder type you choose, is using Post-it notes (I like the Super Sticky ones) for the labels. Ready for the folder to be relabeled? Simply peel the Post-it off without destroying the tab and add a new one. Frugal me has even gone as far as turning the sticky note a quarter or half turn to a fresh side, having crossed out the old label name so there's no confusion if it came unaffixed, lol.
Thank you for posting this video. I started this last night and still have left papers left over to file today. Now, I am rethinking my whole file system. I have a 5 drawer filing cabinet and two drawers are full. I am going to see what I can "purge."
Love watching these videos. I get so many great ideas! Thank you
So glad you're enjoying the videos.
I really need to redo my filing system! Paper clutter is one of my biggest enemies. :/
Clearing Clutter for Clarity That's true for many of us - good luck with the redo!! :)
Thanks! I hope to tackle it soon.
Pete, is the 3 year rule for the ATO the same? I thought it was 5 years
This came at a perfect time :)
Paper monthly bills : I keep only the last three months ( to prove I paid, if there's ever any question.)
Every month the new bill comes in, as soon as it's paid, ( I write on the bathroom calendar when it's due,)
Then, in my bill filing drawer, the newest bill goes on the top of the pile, and the bottom most bill gets removed, shredded and tossed.
Love your channel.
Will you be visiting Toronto (Canada) anytime soon ???
Obsessed with organizing and loving it, it really completely de-clutters the mind, spirit, body and home !!!
Cheers
+Carole L Thanks Carole. I love Toronto but don't have a plan to be there soon... stay tuned here and on my Facebook page (facebook.com/PeterWalsh) for any updates though.
For me, paper organising is the least "romantic" of the de cluttering tasks. Once done, it's not proclaiming its gleaming neatness from inside the filing cabinet or box. It often takes much longer to fix because I am often unsure what should be kept or tossed. It accumulates faster than other clutter and so more readily creates that clutter stress that could be prevented with good systems in place. This used to be something i tackled with zeal and wasn't behind with but it seems that mental energy has dissipated with years of paperwork and shrinking ability. That said, the rewards are well worth the doing it.
inr works I completely agree Narelle but that's the reason why setting up a good system and them maintaining it is essential with your paperwork. And more than any other area in your home, you have to deal with paperwork (read: the mail!) immediately it comes into the house. If not, it'll accumulate quickly and you'll be back right where you started!! Good luck!
@narelleworks8448 I can relate to losing gusto for paper organizing! Health issues got me out of good habits like sorting mail over the recycling bin as soon as I came in. I've had to brainstorm new ones like putting mail in a basket I can sort while seated on the couch or at my desk. Having a *SUNDAY BASKET* is also a great stress reliever for papers. I learned about it on the Minimal Mom channel, and I like her other tips for paper clutter as well.
Following various clutter clearing experts helps me remember what you said: "the rewards are well worth the doing it."
Good wishes to you! : - )
Great tips!
so what happens at the end of the year?
Do you put it in storage boxes and start out again fresh?
Do you shred the documents and star out fresh?
How about bank statements? How long do you keep them.
Beautiful
I "konmari'd" my papers. It wasn't wildly out of control before but there were issues (living overseas, suddenly widowed, estate issues involving 3 countries and 2 languages) However I had a couple of habits well entrenched over the past 25 years which helped enormously: 1) like with like. Always. 2) open the mail over the recycling bin, and toss all inserts and envelopes on the spot. Of course all flyers and promotions don't even get into the door. In crisis I also stopped the newspaper/magazines to minimized the stress of feeling I needed to look at them when I had way too much to deal with already.
I have since applied the konmari concept of making things easy to put away. Where I live paper storage is not files but binders (Even in offices. They use these tall tower carousels for them). It's hard to put things away in plastic sleeves/binders. Now everything I need for filing taxes for the current year gets dropped into one magazine file for easy filing and easy retrieval.
3 years! Good news!
Can you recommend a decent fireproof safe? Good content.
silverteacakes Check out the options online .... it depends on your needs (space) and how long you want it to last in the case of a fire. The more fireproof, generally the more expensive.
Excelent an true.
Try organizing with two toddlers following behind you🤦🏼♀️
Someone needs to start a nonprofit helping single moms get organized🙏🏼
Amen! It gets better!
You might like The Minimal Mom if you haven't found her channel yet. I love her validating, non-judgmental style as much as her tips! (But the tips are transformative ; - ).
wow stacy you are a fox! an organized fox, at that >=-)
Tax records only have to be saved 3 years.. I heard 10 and some people save them for life.
Got a bit too carried away after watching this one...so I sent you a private message on your Fb page.

If you are going to do a video, don't read from a monitor - you sound too stiff.
TL;DR Commercial clickbait and unfortunately no intercourse between two. Dislike.
