Julian Sands, the etymologist, recently passed away. He was hiking in the San Gabriel mountains outside Los Angeles and was lost for several months before Search and Rescue recovered his body. Hw was absolutely magnificent as the bad guy in Warlock, another 80's horror film that should be on your list.
Rest in peace to Julian Sands. I so happened to see him at Texas Frightmare 2022 a few months before he went missing. Major tragedy to the acting community.
The small spiders used was a species from New Zealand that, despite their fierce appearance, is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans.
"Eight Legged Freaks" is also a scary movie about spiders. Not quite as terrifying as Arachnophobia. But on the DVD of it came the directors' film project as a student, and THAT was far more scary. Because to market, a story has to hit some points, but a student film doesn't HAVE any such restriction, so it is far scarier.
I've always been terrified of spiders. My oldest sister rented this movie for our movie night. She said she had more fun watching me watch the movie. My BIL planned ahead and had stuff placed around the room that he could 'touch' the back of my arm or on my ear with so I'd think it was a spider. I've never screamed so much in my life. This is the first time I've watched this movie since then and I still jumped everytime.
When I saw this movie in 1990, I, A 22 year-old Marine, spent the entire movie crouched in my seat, my feet on the cushion, because there was NO WAY I WAS DANGLING MY LEGS to the floor. 😵💫 Side note: I just thank goodness it was Not The Cat!
LOL I saw this movie in the theaters with my cousin when it came out. I was 9, so my cousin Chris was 11. Our grandma took us. She was originally suppose to see a different movie, but I guess she thought I was going to be scared so she sat a few rows behind us to keep an eye on us. LOL honestly I think that movie scared her more than it did us. I'm not really afraid of spiders, but I don't do big ones and I sure don't do webs lol. Honestly I think this movie erks me more now as an adult then it did as a kid. I'm with Ashely. I'm not putting youe ass outside. You come into my bubble space and I'm smashing your ass.

For those who know it's for hernias but don't know what they're feeling for, as OP said, your balls lift when you cough. A hernia is a tear or separation in the muscle wall/floor of your abdomen and your intestines can begin to drop into the scrotum (ballsack), so when your testes lift, they can tell easier if there is a hernia by feeling for the intestinal drop.
NOT THE CAT!! RIP Julian Sands. That was a great reaction. Glad you didn't have a hardtack ,Ashleigh, but it looks like you came close a couple of times.
The spider species they used was the communal huntsman spider, native to (you guessed it) Australia and introduced into New Zealand. Huntsman are generally solitary, but the communal one lives in groups under tree bark. Although the communal huntsman is relatively small, the huntsman group also includes some of the largest spiders. The golden huntsman is the largest in Australia and it has a legspan of ~25cm (10 inches). The majority of large spiders you see on youtube videos in australian homes are common huntsmans which are smaller than that, about the size of your hand splayed out. The largest spider by leg span is the giant huntsman in Laos, with a 12 inch legspan...
"Arachnophobia." The film that taught us that spiders could scream.... God, how I love every single frame of this batshit movie. RIP to the late, great Julian Sands.
Great movie and reaction R.i.P to the recently passed Julian Sands who plays Dr. James Atherton. The scientist who was responsible for the expedition that ended up dealing with the general.
26:31 - The largest spider in the world is commonly known as the Goliath birdeater, according to National Geographic. This tarantula can reach up to 11 inches in length and weigh 6 ounces; this size is big enough to cover a dinner plate, says Guinness World Records.
"Not the Cat" One of the things that makes this movie so scary to me is the fact that it is plausible. I'm sure there are scary ass spiders in the Amazon that still haven't been discovered. Another great reaction, thanks Ashleigh!
And the only thing keeping them from the rest of the world is their natural environment. You know, the environment that industry keeps destroying by clear-cutting. It's only a matter of time till something gets unleashed....
I first saw this as a kid while staying at a friends house. That place was out on a farm and was made from actual logs with spiders everywhere, and after the movie ended we went into the yard to sleep in a tent….I did not sleep that weekend. Oh and I live in Australia, our normal spiders are no joke.
This is truly the ultimate horror movie. Glad its not forgotten about. EOM Reacts also reacted to this movie. Possibly even more entertaining. Both great
The "big bad" spider was partly animatronic, but was also played by a goliath birdeater, the largest spider in the world. And yes, they do get that big. BIgger in fact. The opening was filmed at a Tupui, a South American mesa that is completely ecologically isolated from the rest of the world, and so has been the subject for years of speculation about "lost worlds". They were also featured in "Up".
John Goodman was the highlight of this movie for me when I was a kid. I laughed at every damn line he had, lol. I'm glad he didn't die by the end. The true badass.
In the graphic novel they showed the original opening of the movie. he wasn't two, when Dr. Ross was a baby the spider descended down onto his face while he was in the crib. That memory scarred him forever. That was why he was paralyzed with fear at the end of the movie, and you could still hear a little bit of the music that was playing on his mobile in that final scene if you listen carefully.
The largest spider by weight is the Goliath Birdeater, a species of tarantula, weighing up to 6 oz. with a 5 inch long body. They are found in South America. The largest spider by leg span is the Giant Huntsman Spider, which can have a leg span of up to 1 foot. They are found in Laos. Happy nightmares.
I've woken up to a spider in my nose... it's arms started coming out, bending back, pushing at my nostril to pry its body out of my nose... and that's all I'll say about that :/ This movie still holds up, thanks for a 'fun' watchalong with you, Ashleigh.
I remember watching this when I was young, pranked a mate by dumping a load of little plastic spiders on him about midway through, his scream still makes me laugh...
Some wholesomeness from Wikipedia: The cast actually adopted a few of the spiders and were not afraid of them in any way. After "cut" was yelled on the set, the cast would stop screaming and say "Oh, be careful, don't step on that one" and "don't forget that one over there", laughing the whole time after "cut!" was called.
Ashleigh, this movie has Julian Sands (the doctor) has recently passed in real life, so you made this a very welcome remember ace of Julian Sands. Not the cat
Not a fun fact: First time I watched this movie I was eating popcorn out of a big bowl in the dark. I immediately turned on a light to make sure my bowl contained no spiders. I also doublecheck lamps now when turning them on... ugh (this was years ago)
They chose the huntsman spider because "leggy" spiders are extremely creepy, and they are defs all legs. However, they are also huge, fast, and agile--you put one on the end of a pencil and it can easily climb to the top on the very tips of its long legs. But they are also completely harmless--they are a "friendly" spider, in that they don't bite unless very agitated, and will happily crawl over anything you put them on.
Those spiders hatched SUPER fast. I just looked it up, and spider eggs usually take a few weeks. This movie took place (after we see the young doctor arriving in town) within one week probably.
Arachnophobia is terrifying! It is the only movie that legitimately scared me! The spiders were real and it sent chills down my spine! It is a perfect Halloween treat!
Not all the spiders were real. There are some puppets. I loved this movie but a lot of the spiders were mistreated. Like the one under John Goodman's boot. That was real. I love spiders. I have 8 tarantulas in my house. I think this movie actually made me more fascinated by them. Looking forward to the remake due soon
The noise the camera makes is winding up the film. This is all pre-digital cameras. So when she took the last photo in the roll, so it was auto winding so she could take out the roll.
Creepy-Crawly facts about Arachnophobia: (1990) 1) John Goodman’s hollow-soled boot. When it came to the welfare of the live spiders that were used during the making of the film, the team went to great lengths to prevent any harm coming to the little critters! In one scene, where John Goodman’s character, McLintock the exterminator, stomps on a spider, they actually used a boot with a hollowed-out sole, so that it would trap the spider instead of killing it. 2) Natural causes. If any shots of dead spiders needed to be filmed, the crew had to be very particular about which arachnid corpses they would use for propping. They would only use spiders that had died of natural causes. 3) Big bob. The huge spider that gets into the coffin at the start of the film was actually a bird eating tarantula. At the time of filming, there was only one in the whole of the US. Frank Marshall, who directed the movie, decided to call the spider ‘Big Bob’ after his friend Robert Zemeckis. 4) One of the MythBusters built the animatronic Big Bob double. Near the end of the film, the characters face off against the enormous bird eating tarantula, which the director had nicknamed Big Bob. Whilst a live spider was used for some of the filming, a mechanical double had to be built for some of the scenes. This job went to none other than Jamie Hyneman from MythBusters! As he often says on the show, he used to work in movie effects, and this animatronic spider was one of the first movie props he created. 5) Steven Spielberg hid in the footwell? In a video with GQ, John Goodman revealed that when they were filming a shot of his exterminator truck travelling down a road, the world-renowned director Steven Spielberg (who executive produced the movie) was crouching down in the passenger footwell. Spielberg said, ‘only we will know I was here.’
It is so funny to see Jeff Daniels paying in a creature feature. To me, he resembles a vanilla ice-cream cone. He is in 'Pleasantville', which few reactors tackle. Loving your selection of Beans Movies.
14:45 - *Hahaha* I love that Ashleigh's question is why you have to turn your head, instead of why they're grabbing your genitals and having you cough. I've never actually had a doctor do that, but you turn your head so you're not coughing in the doctor's face.
This movie is Fantastic. I hate spiders as well, but when I want something that will make my skin crawl and pull the blanket in closer, I watch this movie. And I love that she said not the cat get the humans 😂
The house they used in the film is just few miles from where I live. And unfortunately Julian Sands, the actor who played the spider expert, disappeared not very far from there while hiking during a storm recently. They didn’t find his body until months later
There are spiders that can grow as large as a dinner plate. I did see one spider as a kid that was bigger than my hand. That was big enough for me. I quickly turned and walked away.
The dad is Jeff Daniels, probably best known for Dumb & Dumber (with Jim Carrey). He was more recently in the show The Newsroom, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, which was pretty good. He won the award for Best Actor in a Drama for the first season.
I wanna go to Australia SO bad Everyone I've met (and I mean everyone) I have met from there, I liked. Same for the Kiwi's but I'd rather go to Australia. And maybe I'll fall in love with a beautiful Australian woman. Either way: much love from Northern California!@@InEmptinessWeTrust
OMG, I didn't realise Julian Sands was in this as Doctor James. He just passed away recently so it's kind of poetic and sad to see him in this. If you want to see more of him, you should watch the campy delight "Warlock".
I saw this in the theater when I was a kid with all my friends and the scene where the spider crawls out of the mortician’s nose made us all jump and scream so badly that the box of popcorn (which the spider was in in the scene) flew in the air and landed in my open screaming mouth which of course made me freak out more bc my mind went immediately to spider. Also RIP to Julian Sands
Big-Screen Huge Theater viewing is a must. No one in those theaters came out without jumping, screaming, flinching. Those scenes with lotsa spiders - wow.
Julian Sands (the expert) also passed away this year BTW. His body was found in June, months after he went missing on a hike in some California mountains. Very sad but at least his family finally got some closure.
BTW, Ashleigh, yes -- spiders DO get that big. 😁 The biggest huntsman spiders in Australia are the world's largest spider by length/width measurement, and the goliath birdeater tarantula is the world's largest spider by mass. Google them if you'd like to see pictures. 😁
Oh goodness, I remember seeing this in the theatre with my parents when it came out. We didn't actually expect it to be as scary because the trailers showed John Goodman a lot and made it look like it'd actually be more of a comedy lol. So we were surprised when he was hardly in it. Still a great movie. Go Vols!
I saw this movie in a theatre with my best friend. As terrifying as it is to watch at home, it was horrifying to see in the theatre. It was all too easy to feel like the spiders were crawling over and under everything in the theatre. By the end, my friend and I were holding each other’s clenched hands and had our feet up on the seat in front of us trying not to run screaming up the aisle. I’ll never forget it! Loved the reaction and am looking forward to the rest of HalloBeans!
I'm so glad there are no properly eusocial spiders, like imagine a thousand spiders cooperating like ants, closest thing that exists are social spiders that kinda live together, they still build huge webs together though
The spiders in the movie are Delena cancerides, the Social huntsman so yes, these are the spiders that live together. They're native to Australia although those in the film are from New Zealand; they were introduced there some time back and are known as the Avondale spider.
Ha Ha her 1st response was to say " Fuck my ass! " lol😂 You know the spiders are the baddies when you scream "NOT THE CAT! " John Goodman as Delbert, the best terminator I mean exterminator ever! Yep he's BAD!
Loved to see you scared, Ash. Sad to see the late Julian Sands here. Fun facts here: 1) Steven Spielberg realized here about the resemblance between John Goodman and Fred Flintstone, and oofered him the role. 2) Steven Spielberg had planned for the film to be joined for the 2nd Roger Rabbit short, "Roller Coaster Rabbit". But Michael Eisner (Then Disney's CEO) put the short as an aditional atraction for "Dick Tracy". Spielberg wasn't happy about this and after "Trail-Mix Up", the third and final Roger Rabbit short, other projects with the character were canned.
This was one of my favourite movies growing up. It kinda got forgotten in the ether of time, and I'm glad to see it be rediscovered in this new Reactor YT culture
I was so keyed up and jittery by the time this movie was over that, when my friend and I walked out of the theater, I wanted to sprint madly around the theater building just from sheer nervous tension.
I watched this as a child and it started my fear of spiders. As an adult, it's the only movie I've had to break up to watch in halves because my heart was racing too fast. They are doing a modern remake. It looks terrifying lol
Great job Ashleigh! This was a fun reaction. 2 movies in and you're killing it for HallowBeans so far. It's just too bad this movie didn't follow the rule of not the cat. Keep up the great work.
A funny story about a snake coming out of the toilet: when Jake "The Snake" Roberts was in Australia for a show once, Jushin "Thunder" Liger refused to even have his locker room on the same side of the arena as Jake. That's how much he hated snakes. Well, during the show Jake's snake got loose and went into the toilet. It then came out of the toilet in Jushin's locker room. It freaked Jushin out. Jake had to give up his snake to customs & didn't get it back.
Yep. I started to watch but got freaked out. So decided to watch it in broad daylight when I'm on the streetcar. Not when I'm home and definitely not at night. 😱
Well this was a most enjoyable reaction! I'm sorry that you were scared by all the jump scares, but it was so entertaining watching you! "Not the cat!"
When I was a kid, I loved spiders. Used to pick them up, and let them crawl all over me. Probably would have ended up with a tarantula or something. Then this movie came out, and I begged my parents to take me to the spider movie. I am no longer a fan of spiders. *Edit*: Not the cat. Whatever you do, don't imagine the bit of your missing toe as a bite.
@@Jessethegoodwitchyes he's saying the movie gave him "Arachnophobia", I don't blame him, even I'm scared of the jumping spiders that are naturally in my house even though I think they are intelligent and cool my Arachnophobia keeps me from actually picking one up. It's like pure terror.
Not the Cat! My first viewing of this was in 1990 after winning tickets to an advance screening in Chicago with Siskel and Ebert, the original movie reviewers and now, 34 yrs later I've come full circle with Ashleigh, arguably the best movie reviewer on YT. Life is good.
Dave Coulier is the guy from Full House, they somewhat look similar but yea, no, that is Jeff Daniels in this movie and Dumb and Dumber as well. When I was a kid I thought the same thing though.
Ashleigh really needs to go to Universal Studios Florida to ride Harry Potter: The Forbidden Journey. I'd pay real money to see her react to Aragog appearing directly in her face from out of the dark. :D
Dude, I rode that thing and the ride stopped right in front of Aragog because someone needed help on the ride launch. As someone who as a very young boy developed arachnophobia from this movie, that was...not fun.
The psychological hold this movie had on me as a child though... Story time: Shortly after seeing this for the first time, I walked around the side of my grandma's house. I spotted something moving above me near the roof. I looked up to see a massive effing tarantula scaling down the wall, running RIGHT at me. Scared the absolute shit outta me so badly I didnt go on that side of the house for a year lol
This is the scariest of all the spider movies, for one reason: Something like this could actually happen. How many unknown species could there be in the Amazon rainforests, waiting to wreak deadly havoc on the rest of the world.....with only their natural environment keeping them in check? But in the name of development, people keep clear-cutting the rainforests. One of these days, something like these spiders, or worse, could be unleashed as a result.
18:28 RIP, Julian Sands. (both in the movie, and IRL.) All these actors passing recently, making me feel very old. I can only hope John Goodman has a long life.
24:53 Michael J Fox was filming that sitcom (Family Ties) at the same time as Back To The Future. So he would often need to go directly from the sitcom set, to film the night scenes for BTTF. It was a rough schedule, to say the least.
I haven't even STARTED this and know it is going to be a banger! Edit - now done - SO glad you enjoyed it! I too share your fear of spiders and saw this on VHS when I was 9... it scarred me. But now I can appreciate some of the humor. It makes the movie far more tolerable! 😂🤣
I knew you'd watch this even though you didn't want to. Same as I knew I'd watch you watch it even though I'll feel spiders all around me for the rest of the damn day. 🕷😱 Let's all suffer together. ✌❤

The blond guy, the spider expert, Julien Sands. He died a few months back. He was hiking and got lost. They found him over a month later. Poor guy.
"Arachnophobia." The film that taught us that spiders could scream....
God, how I love every single frame of this batshit movie.
RIP to the late, great Julian Sands.
"8 Legged Freaks." The film that taught us that spiders can giggle...
You now know the Australian Hissing Spider exists...
@@fredfredburger5150 I'd rather not know that. It's bad enough I know what a Funnel Web spider is.
@@fredfredburger5150There's a whistling spider too., although that just makes a hissing noise aswell
Great movie and reaction
R.i.P to the recently passed Julian Sands who plays Dr. James Atherton. The scientist who was responsible for the expedition that ended up dealing with the general.
You should watch him in Stephen King's Rose Red. He plays a mind reader.
26:31 - The largest spider in the world is commonly known as the Goliath birdeater, according to National Geographic. This tarantula can reach up to 11 inches in length and weigh 6 ounces; this size is big enough to cover a dinner plate, says Guinness World Records.
"Not the Cat"
One of the things that makes this movie so scary to me is the fact that it is plausible.
Awww poor Ashleigh. This movie is not kind to those who fear the spiders... But when John Goodman shows up, it's so awesome!
Not the Cat!! 😭😭
Happy nightmares.
you're wrong for this.
@@awkwardashleigh😂😂😂😂
I've woken up to a spider in my nose... it's arms started coming out, bending back, pushing at my nostril to pry its body out of my nose... and that's all I'll say about that :/
This movie still holds up, thanks for a 'fun' watchalong with you, Ashleigh.
Woke up with a spider in my ear when I was little... traumatized lol
I remember watching this when I was young, pranked a mate by dumping a load of little plastic spiders on him about midway through, his scream still makes me laugh...
1. "WOOHOOHOOHOO! F*ck my ass!" had me dying laughing.
2. It's funny to me how the spider tree is clearly a magnolia lol
"Every scary movie has a shower scene." Yep, ever since _Psycho._
Not the cat.
I like this film . horror for many of us , with a little humour in there
Not all the spiders were real. There are some puppets. I loved this movie but a lot of the spiders were mistreated. Like the one under John Goodman's boot. That was real. I love spiders. I have 8 tarantulas in my house. I think this movie actually made me more fascinated by them. Looking forward to the remake due soon
@@thewickedwizard they said they tried to care for the spiders. When he steps on it , apparently the shoe has a false bottom to not squash it

The noise the camera makes is winding up the film. This is all pre-digital cameras. So when she took the last photo in the roll, so it was auto winding so she could take out the roll.
Not the cat! That's how you know the spiders are the villains, when they killed the cat. That's what Hollywood taught me, anyway.
Re: your question if spiders actually get that big -- yes, they get that big and even bigger. Look up "Huntsman spider" or "clock spider."
Loving your selection of Beans Movies.
i love pleasantville
The actor who played the scientist was Julian Sands he did recently. Died while hiking in California during a snow ❄️ storm. Did many movies.
Ashleigh, I feel you about the poor kitty; every time I watch this, I'm like not the cat! 🐈💔

Awesomely hilarious yet traumatizing. Never was scared of spiders before... welp, I definitely caught the phobia back in 1990! lol
Big-Screen Huge Theater viewing is a must. No one in those theaters came out without jumping, screaming, flinching. Those scenes with lotsa spiders - wow.
I don't know why but Ashleigh's reaction to seeing the photographer's emaciated corpse was hilarious.
Julian Sands (the expert) also passed away this year BTW. His body was found in June, months after he went missing on a hike in some California mountains. Very sad but at least his family finally got some closure.
Did Ashleigh really say “ F*ck my A$$” when she got scared?!!! OOHH LORDY!! 😂💀🤣
BTW, Ashleigh, yes -- spiders DO get that big. 😁 The biggest huntsman spiders in Australia are the world's largest spider by length/width measurement, and the goliath birdeater tarantula is the world's largest spider by mass. Google them if you'd like to see pictures. 😁
Pretty sure the largest huntsman are from Vietnam
I believe they used the Goliath as the main villain spider for this movie.
Every time I think "such and such was Ashleigh's best video", you put out one where I have to change my mind. This was awesome. 👍
I'm with you Ashleigh, I said "not the cat" at the same time you did! You can get the humans but not the poor furbabies!
You're off to a great start during this season. Great reaction! 👍🏿
Ashleigh: Now I'm not debilitatingly scared of spiders...
Yoda: You will be... you will be.
Fun facts here:
1) Steven Spielberg realized here about the resemblance between John Goodman and Fred Flintstone, and oofered him the role.
LOL I totally wanna see the remake. I grew up on this movie. Hope they don't fuck it up 😆
Great job Ashleigh!
Facing my fears with Ashleigh for this one. And it is broad daylight here.
Yep. I started to watch but got freaked out. So decided to watch it in broad daylight when I'm on the streetcar. Not when I'm home and definitely not at night. 😱

When I was a kid, I loved spiders. Used to pick them up, and let them crawl all over me. Probably would have ended up with a tarantula or something. Then this movie came out, and I begged my parents to take me to the spider movie.

Dude, I rode that thing and the ride stopped right in front of Aragog because someone needed help on the ride launch. As someone who as a very young boy developed arachnophobia from this movie, that was...not fun.
The psychological hold this movie had on me as a child though...

OMG You did Dr Sleep? I know I've been sick but how did I miss this! I'm going to watch right after this one! Love your reactions! ❤
Let me tell you as someone that has been fascinated by spiders all my life. This could and will never happen. It's so far fetched it's unreal.

It seems to work well for other
invasive species... as well as diseases,
like HIV.

I can only hope John Goodman has a long life.
24:53 Michael J Fox was filming that sitcom (Family Ties) at the same time as Back To The Future.
So he would often need to go directly from the sitcom set, to film the night scenes for BTTF. It was a rough schedule, to say the least.
