My son was at a friend's house one weekend, and while reading creepypastas around 3 at night, I heard what sounded like a baby coo from the next room. All my cats were in the room with me and sat up staring in the direction of the sound. Never lit up sage so fast in my life (and I always have a knife or my ax close.)
I once took an old cellphone of mine, downloaded a kid's laugh ringtone. I set the alarm to go off at random weird times late at night, only for 5 seconds before it shut off on its own, and then hid it under my friend's couch. It took them a week to find it.
It often happens to me that when I wake up unexpectedly in the middle of sleep, I may see non-existent things. Once I fell asleep on my couch and when I suddenly woke up, I saw a little boy peeping at me from behind the door. I stared at it for a moment and had to go and look behind the door :D

By the time he buried his wife up there, he was quite literally insane from grief and horror. He wasn't thinking clearly at all.
Yeah, that's what the "soil of a man's heart is stonier" line is about. As horrible as loss is, having the power to undo it is even worse, and by the end he was so obsessed by it that it drove him mad. People can't think clearly when they're grieving, and he had simply lost too much to think about anything other than wanting to get his family back.
I think it is also a bit of Reanimator thinking, aka that it failed before because they had been dead for to long while his wife was "fresh".
It's too bad they didn't find a good actor to play this role so that this could be communicated to the audience.

Gage turning around after getting the injection in the neck and saying "No fair Daddy, no fair" has lived rent free in my head for decades, since I first watched this film. When I was around 9, my next door neighbour, an older lady named Dorothy had a grey cat called Church. She told me he was named after a cat in a book. It took me a few years to finally find out which book she was referring to. Once she realised I knew, she let me borrow any Stephen King book she had that I hadn’t read yet. I still remember how happy she was when I turned up on her doorstep with a couple she hadn’t read. I still miss you, Dorry.
That's so sweet!! She protected you by not naming the book until you were ready. Then shared her King book thrills with you.
I always wondered why Jud told Louis about the burial ground. He knew it was bad. After looking into it more, the place has a hold over people who bury there. They're compelled to keep it going. It explains not just the grief Louis was going thru but the power that made him keep doing it, despite knowing it was never going to work out.
Church hates the dad in particular because he's the one who buried it, bringing it back to life, but "wrong". Remember Jud said, "You bury your own", "He's your cat now", "What you own always comes home to you"? It means you reap what you sow, and greed has a cost. He's responsible for what he did to it, so he gets the blunt of the curse as a consequence. But also, the evil spirit (in the book, in the form of a wendigo lurking in the woods) enticed Jud into luring Louis to the cursed grounds, giving him vitality and exhilaration in the process (hence why he's so apt at climbing the mountain versus an exhausted Louis), which sets everything in motion, quite literally leading to Gage's death. That's why he later feels guilty for having shown the place to Louis and having seeded this thought in his head, inadvertently setting evil on Louis. Indeed, sometimes dead is better...

Native Americans did not like this movie for obvious reasons. lol They get tired of that line " Well, just make sure you don't bury your passed away pet in a Native American holy ground". lol
@@chuckh4077 I can imagine. It's just like how everything from Ancient Egypt is evil, not exactly a great portrayal of a people and culture, especially considering how robbed of their heritage they were. Same with the Native Americans...
One of the “inspirations” for the story was when King’s toddler son, Owen (iirc), was nearly hit by a semi-truck; the only reason he wasn’t, was Owen stumbled BACKWARD instead of toward the road, and rolled down the grassy incline. The idea of his son dying haunted King so intensely, that he eventually wrote it, thinking about how far he would go if he knew he could bring his lost child back to life. And so: Pet Sematary.
Then he tucked the manuscript in a drawer and thought that no publisher would ever release it with how horrifying the story is.
I think that's why it's so difficult to get into. King's ability to tap into real, dark emotions is what makes him so good, but toddler death is something I don't want to experience. And I don't even have kids!
@@vanyadolly That ability coupled with his realistic characters is why I've come to think of King's work more as tragedies with a side of horror. The spooky atmosphere gets most of the attention, but a lot of his stories grow out of deeply depressing places.
I admire that King can write a 500 page book from a single idea. And he does this again and again and again and again.
interesting note, it's lowkey hinted that Louis and his daughter, Ellie, both have a touch of the Shining, which is why they can see and hear Pascoe where no-one else can.

I was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington State back in the 80's. I was in my barracks bunk on a Saturday afternoon rereading The Stand. My best buddy walks in and asks to borrow my copy of Pet Semetary. I pulled it out of my locker and hand it to him. He says 'follow me' and we go outside and start walking towards the motor pool. I ask where we're going and he just said 'You'll see'. We go last the motor pool out to the outer fence to a gate. We go through the gate and about 50 feet down is a pet cemetery. So we sent the rest of the afternoon and all day Sunday reading Stephen King in a pet graveyard.
The book is incredible. Don't think I've read a better horror novel.
“Whistles innocently” is the telltale sign you’ve been getting in touch with your family at the pet semetary.
Ashleigh: where's the airbags at". Yes, at one time cars didn't have airbags and seatbelts.
Back in the day you would roll up the seat belt and tuck it in the seat.

Lol I grew up in a time where my brother and I used to pull faces at the car behind us while standing on the back seat! Definitely no airbags back then!
It's never really said in the movie but the spirit that tainted the burial ground is a Wendigo. It's why the soldier guy was seen eating a kid's leg. The wendigo is also influencing people to use the burial ground so it can feed/be used. It's why Jud told Lewis about the burial ground: the wendigo convinced him that bringing back a cat wouldn't hurt... then it influenced things (Truck driver distracted/the trucks always going too fast, the wind blowing hard enough to send the kite to the road, etc) so that Gage was killed and Lewis would be tempted to bury his son there.
Yeah, I never read the book, but my brother did, and he said that the Wendigo was this huge force that lingered at the edge of the Pet Semetary, larger than the trees and watching. Wendigos freak me out so much.
@@robertgronewold3326 Yep. it was also the thing Jud claimed was 'just a loon'. In the foot, Lewis actually sees large footprints in the forest on his way to the burial ground. The wendigo is also the main antagonist in the book The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon which is about a girl who gets lost in the woods and starts seeing Things.
Did the remake touch on any of this?
Just as a heads up: don’t say that word. Don’t even type it. Its name holds power and not in a good way for those who say it. And even if you don’t believe in that, it’s still worth avoiding out of respect for those who have believed it for centuries.

Out of every scene in this movie, it's the tendons scene still haunts me.
Even knowing it was coming I still had to pull my legs up, my blood went cold, and I had to look away. I'm glad I had a cronchy snack to take my mind off of it.
I was a little kid, visiting my cousins, and we started watching this. We had to leave, and the last scene we saw before leaving was the semi truck scene. That scene lived rent free in my head for several years. I eventually read the book to get past it and finally watched the movie all the way through.

My friends and I say "the soil of a man's heart is stonyier Louis" everytime we're drunk or something suspicious is afoot. But you gotta say it in Herman Munters voice...like in the movie. We are now all 50 now. This movie stays with you always.

Undead Stare off
In the book there is a creature called the Wendigo which influenced Judd against his will. That is why Judd showed Lewis the Cemetery to bury church in. It is the one thing missing from the movie.
Yep it influenced everything. That's why drivers were compelled to drive so fast.
Same way Pennywise influenced everything in their town.

@@shanedaley6236 I'm glad they didn't because that's not what a Wendigo is or does. They're cannibalistic monsters from many Algonquin tribes. I grew up hearing about them and never heard anything about them bringing back the dead.
@@shanedaley6236 They had some ideas and scenes and it's hinted at a couple times in the movie, as the scene where Judd is leading Lewis to the burial ground and something in the woods makes a noise that stops both men in their tracks. It is strongly implied that Judd knows what made the sound but says it's a loon so Lewis will continue on. I believe they cut the ideas out for pacing but I would have preferred they kept it in also.
I think it's cooler if Judd just has a weak heart and can't bear the young girl to be unhappy.
Similarly, in my head canon, Lewis knows that his wife is going to kill him at the end: he doesn't want to go on and wants some sense of closure in his death.

I don't understand ( have never and will never) why NO ONE fenced in a small area of the yard. YOU HAVE AN 18 WHEELER RACE TRACK IN FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE. A fucking fence would have solved every problem before it started.
Cause the whole place is under the malicious psychic influence of the Wendigo, the evil being behind the reanimations. It's actively wants the road dangerous to feed the cemetery so it influences the drivers on it to be more reckless. Then it can influence people to bury the dead in it's cursed cemetery. In exactly the same way it would prevent people from taking any proactive measures to make the road less dangerous.

When Stephen King wrote this book, he put it away after finishing it. He said it was too disturbing to publish and he is on record saying it's the one story that scared him.
Indeed, the book is a lot more disturbing than the movie. Read it, but be warned. The book reaches into your soul and you will not be the same afterward.
It is often rated among his top five scariest books.
the director is Mary Lambert. She also known for directing the greatest music videos in the 80s. Her sister Blanche was a US senator from Arkansas
In the books the way they describe the death scene of the kid is BRUTAL
Absolutely brutal. Even though it’s in retrospect and when the story picks up again, they’re already the aftermath…
The book is notorious as the one Stephen King himself was so disturbed by that he was very hesitant to send it to his publisher.
He threw it in a drawer after his wife told him it was too dark. He was breaking away from his old publisher and they wanted one more book to satisfy his contract. He didn't want to write one for them, so he pulled it out of the drawer, and the rest is history.
The scene where Gage is killed is based on a "what if" from King's own life. His son was almost hit by a truck like that but King was able to grab him in time.
This book also freaked *my* dad out, as well. He prided himself on his ability to read anything and still maintain his equilibrium. But he told me that, when he was reading *Pet Sematary,* he actually got scared enough that, if he continued, something Really Bad would happen. He put the book aside, only about a quarter finished, and never touched it again. (I'm not even sure if he ever read *any* Stephen King books again.)
@@alyxgriffen5073 I'm a wimp when it comes to horror movies, but I'm fine with reading horror novels... until I read Pet Sematary. That book freaked me out, as well (but I did finish it). So when the movie came out, there was NO way I was going to watch it. I'm glad to have gotten little glimpses of it from this reaction, so curiosity isn't killing THIS cat :)

The Old Man is played by Fred Gwyne, a truly talented actor, probably best known for a role he hated, Herman Munster. My personal favorite role is the drunk neighbor in "The Boy Who Could Fly".

When Gage gets killed hurts my ❤️. My 5 year old nephew was killed in a freak accident and they looked a lot alike. My nephew has been gone 39 years. Still miss him.

However I do think you may want to read what you wrote and rethink of some phrasing for "I had my nephew killed at just 5 years old" can definitely be miss interpreted to you literally had someone kill your nephew when they were 5 or when you where 5.

I am so sorry, I can understand how it would hurt. My niece is everything to me, as I don't have any children. I don't know what I'd do if I lost her. Gage's death is a real gut-punch, especially when you don't expect a movie to go there, but I think that's the strength of King's work, he really finds characters you care about, then puts them through hell.

In literature, "Pet Sematary" uses the short story "Monkey's Paw" for it's primary format. The story is about 3 supernatural wishes where the tragic result of the first wish causes an irrational second wish which then leads to the consistent 3rd wish for death. Regardless of the first two wishes, stories using the Monkey's Paw format always results in a 3rd wish for death (or a symbolic version of it).

I still can't believe I read this book in 6th grade. My Aunt gave me the book. Scared the hell out of me. I remember being mad at the changes they made when the movie came out a few years later, but was still scared to death.
I don't watch this movie not because it's scary, but because it's heartbreaking, especially once I became a dad. In fact, with all due respect, Ashleigh, I can't even watch your reaction, because it's just brutal. I'm jumping through for highlights and getting to the wrap-up.
I skipped straight to the end too. This was the first R-rated movie I saw, and it left me with just an unpleasant feeling for days afterward.
This movie is more haunting than scary. I find it really interesting that Louis Creed lost his entire family with little to no effort/malice on his part while Jack Torrance's family survived while he'd need possessed to kill them all...

Glad you laughed when the evil resurrected kid says "No Fair" after getting pricked, it made me crack up first time I ever saw it too. The book ending was more ambiguous, she doesn't kill him. She just walks up behind him, placing a hand on his shoulder and rasps "darling", leaving it open-ended to what followed.

I remember growing up. This was absolutely the scariest movie that you could watch or recommend to a friend.
This is hands down the most disturbing movie from my childhood and I still can't bring myself to sit down and watch it anymore. The sister Zelda is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.

The idea is that, in storytelling (especially in a visual medium), you keep the dead in what they were last in. Their clothing and their state, so that the viewer retains the understanding that this is the dead guy. Ideally, most understand that when you die, you would appear in the state and clothing that you decide, and generally something familiar to the person you revealed yourself to. But without the bindings of time, you can appear in an older state, or a younger state, but one that would still be familiar with the recipient.
In this case, and many movies that use it, the writer wants the audience to know that we're dealing with the dead so they will retain their last look, even if it's gory. If dead guy came back as his younger and more intact self, he would have to rely on exposition to explain that he's the same guy but now he's younger and more intact. The easiest way to avoid that exposition dump is to simply keep them in their last state. We saw them dead in that state, and we see them come back in that same state. Easy-peasy.
The reason it feels like it was off that the old man told him about the cemetery and that you shouldn't go only to do it anyway is because the town is possessed by the cemetery and it's inevitable that people end up leading others to it

The "mom / md wife" is Denise Crosby is best known for playing 'Tasha Yar / Commander Sela" on "Star Trek: TNG". She is also the granddaughter of 40s / 50s crooner and actor, Bing Crosby.
"Who's that old man?"... That is Fred Gwynne. He is best known for playing Herman Munster on the B&W "Musters" tv show, "Car 54, Where are you?", and you should remember him as the strict Judge in "My Cousin Vinny".
The "that little boy has been in more stuff" is actor Miko Hughes. You seen him in "Kindergarten Cop" and "Apollo 13". He also played autistic little boy (Simon Lynch) in "Mercury Rising" with Alec Balwin.
Yesw, the preacher at the funeral was Stephen King.

The movie was quite "Cronchy" and intense experience.
The director of this film, Mary Lambert.... had just one year previously directed the ""Like a Prayer" video by Madonna.
In fact, the success of that video had a BIG push in her getting this film.
In my dreams, Mary Lambert directed the new Star Wars instead of JJ Abrams.
And then tanked it hard with Part 2.

This is the Stephen King book i read first and always recommend to people. Its not very long, it captures his style perfectly so you can figure out if you like his style of storytelling, plus its cronchy as heck. It has a terrifying monologue about Oz the Great and Powerful (which they dont explore in the movie) that will never leave my brain.
Ashleigh -- Did you recognize the little boy who played Gage as the little boy who says "Boys have a penis; girls have a vagina" in 'Kindergarten Cop'?
He was also Jim Lovell's son in "Apollo 13" who was so concerned about "the door".

Strange enough -- my soul dog passed away about 2 years ago. Sometimes, every now and then, I hear HIS bark. Now I know that it is probably a neighbor dog that occasionally barks like my beloved boy, but it still gives me hope that my boy is still watching out for me.
There's some speculation that in loving an animal, we put a little bit of your soul in them, like how God breathed souls into us. So, even though animals don't have immortal souls like we do simply by their nature, it's *possible* that our beloved pets will be waiting for us on the other side.
I would go see a doctor for that.. You might be suffering from a Mental sickness.

It's surprising how many noises you hear in your house after a pet dies... things you always thought were your pets (making the sounds.) But other noises, like tapping of claws on the floor, take a while to fade.

This is my favorite Stephen King novel. It's just merciless.
I read the book in my early 20s. Yes, a grown man slept with the light on for a few days.
My son died 6 years ago this month. (Not much older than Cage) And even watching Pet Semetery and knowing what I do about Horror and bringing back the dead... I still couldn't say 100% that I wouldn't do the same thing.

I read the book when I was a kid and always thought he meant loons as in people in a looney bin lol! Birds sound much nicer.

Honestly, loons are spookier. Hearing one wail or laugh around dusk and then they take off across the water sounding like a helicopter.

This movie is badly underrated - it's got a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58% on the Tomatometer and 60% on the Popcornmeter.
It deserves a much, much higher score

When you have room for another miniseries, the 1979 Salems Lot. I know there's a new one on HBO now, and there was a remake back in I want to say the '90s, but the original is still the best.
iirc, the Salem's Lot remake was early 2000s, with Rob Lowe. Another remake/reboot is supposed to come out soon.
By far one of the most effective King stories. I remember reading it in middle school. There's a lot in the book that makes the movie even more scary, as there simply wasn't enough time given in film form. Loved seeing your reaction.

This was Denise Crosby major role after she left star trek TNG , when that series was not going to be anything .... to be fair season 1 was mainly remake of the original series episodes.
Same year she did movie Tennessee Nights , that Kris Kristofferson (RIP 28 Sept 2024) did music to and Johnny Cash performed, biggest stars of that movie.
To the even older folk he was Muldoon in "Car 54 where are you?". Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster) was a regular in that as well

Zelda hands down is my worst nightmare. As a child that's what I saw when I turned off the lights and had to run to my room
I've met the dead guy at a comic con. He was a very nice and pleasant man. He said that it took 45 mins to look like that and sadly that no one would sit with him as he was in costume and makeup.
I actually had a pretty big crush on him in this movie as a kid. Yeah, I was weird.

CRONCHY. I remember reading this book in my teens. It was amazing and terrifying. At the time, I had pet rats, and when I went to bed that night, one of them got out of her cage. I'm lying there trying to sleep and she WALKS ACROSS MY FACE. I had never been so scared in my life! I preferred the book, but the movie definitely brought back all those scared feelings.

Seriously this book is fantastic and with this movie they did the best with what they had and a good job at bringing that story to film. Clearly they were limited here and I tend to have more respect for people who work out a budget than have budget work things out for them.
Pet Cemetery is a STRONG choice of scary movie. These videos need a scream/jumpscare counter.
