When this first aired on Broadway, they have vines wired to the ceiling. And when the plant won, they dropped the vines on the audience.
We did this show at my high school and that’s exactly what we did! 🤣
I love how we've all now retroactively accepted this ending to the theatrical happy ending.
OMG. I've NEVER seen this version. It's true to the Broadway musical. Wow!😯
Other original version is wayyyyy better
I like the “oh shit” line from Audrey II in the other ending
When I heard about the other happy ending I was so glad we got to see this one; we loved this ending
I think that when they did this ending that people just wasn’t happy with a non-happy ending so they did the happy ending, which I absolutely love as well. I like both endings, but I kinda like that the actual version little bit better because of the happy ending
You watched the alternate cut. In the theatrical cut Seymour and the girl survive, the plant dies and there is no invasion. They get married and go live together.
Well...there's a potential for an invasion at the end with the little cutting that smiles at the camera, but we never know
@@taylorkendal17 right 👍
Alt cut is the superior version
@@TheJabbate1 It's really not. I like the Broadway ending, which works live, but I think Frank Oz dropped the ball on trying to recreate it. First, it goes on WAY too long. Second, when you see it live, the dead characters come back for the final song. They didn't figure out a way to do that with the movie.
This has got to be my favorite musical movie EVER!!!!
This and, strangely, Chess for me. I adored this movie when it was released. Although the original ending was faithful to the stage musical, it did go one for far too long and I much appreciate the upbeat ending. We've become so invested in Seymore and Audrey that it hurt to see them get their stage musical exits.
CRYBABY is excellent. Starring young Johnny Depp and directed by John Waters.
The practical effects are so good is because the movie was directed by Frank Oz, who in addition to being a film director (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels FTW), is also quite famous as a puppeteer. He performed Yoda in the original Star Wars trilogy, and as one of Jim Henson’s closest collaborators, is behind many Muppets, including Grover, Fozzie Bear, and, of course, the iconic Miss Piggy.
This is a man who understands how to work with and shoot puppets, and it’s one of the reasons why Audrey II often does feel alive in the film.
The Audrey II puppet was so big that it couldn't move as fast as it needed to, so all those scenes were filmed with Rick Moranis moving at half speed so the whole thing could be sped up in post.
This was the first big collaboration of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (composer and lyrics for the songs), who also collaborated on the revival of Disney (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin). Also, the voice of Audrey II was Levi Stubbs from the Four Tops (famous Motown group).
This fucked me up so bad... I grew up seeing the theatrical release.
I literally did not know this version existed, and I found out by watching this just now.
Right? I even seen this in a play and this was not the ending hahaha watching this had me trippin
omg what a way to learn about the alt ending 😂
I like the lean green mother song >_< The alt ending keeps popping up when I see reviews.
This was the original ending, until they tested the film and audiences hated it so much that they had to rewrite the script and reshoot the ending. I'm glad the test audiences hated it, I do too. This ending would have ruined the movie.
Me too 😮😮
"What is it, like, a plant genie?" Particularly funny considering Ashman and Menken also wrote "Friend Like Me" for the Genie in Aladdin XD
This is one of my favorite musicals, so here are some fun facts:
- This musical movie is based on the 1960 horror comedy movie with the same name
- In this movie has some connections to The Muppets like that the director is Frank Oz who not only was puppeteer he also voiced many characters like Fozzie, Miss Piggy, Animal, & others. Then there is the puppeteers who designed & operated Audrey II worked for Jim Henson company in fact one of the operators was Brian Henson aka Jim's son
- The wardrobe & props were from New York thrift shops in order to attain a period realism
- "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" (personally my favorite song) is the 1st Oscar-nominated song to contain profanity
- The members of the Greek Chorus are all named after girl groups that being The Ronettes, The Chiffons, & The Crystals
and since they mentioned "gotham" they really should check out the 1960 film, i don't want to say why and spoil it but it is hilarious
Absolutely love this movie!
Rick Moranis is amazing!
And the three female singers are fantastic!
"The stupid alien plant works?!" I think in the 1960 original film it's implied the plant has some low-grade hypnotic abilities, which I would assume are also in effect in this version considering the first customer's behavior.
"...... you'll be a dentist". Best line in the movie lol
"He's got backup singers! Oh, shit!" 😂
Audrey II voice - courtesy of Levi Stubbs (RIP) lead singer from the Four Tops (Motown)
"Dental Joker" is a great description of Martin's character!
Fun fact: Jack Nicholson (AKA The joker) actually appeared in the 1960s version of Little shop of horrors as the masochistic dental patient (AKA Bill Murray's role)
This movie is great and so is the music! If you haven't seen it already I hope "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is next, perfect for the season.
That's my guess for one of the 2 movies they said are next. My other guess is either Sweeny Todd or Nightmare Before Christmas (of they add animated movies)
@@Michelle-DiPalo fingers crossed!
This is one of those to keep around for when someone says "you know, I don't really like musicals..." It's a broad genre with some very weird little corners that are worth checking out.
Yup, in my opinion the people who claim to hate musicals just haven't found their "flavor" yet, there are so many different types of shows and something for everyone
80's movies special effects are light years better than today's cgi, which is insane.
Wow I'd heard there was an "Audrey II wins" ending but I've never seen it before! How fun. Glad you guys checked this out!
When I was in high school, we put on the stage play version of this. I was helping with building the sets with this one.
I loved that both nights got sold out, that there was demand for having a third and forth showing (school board wouldn't let us extend the show for two more performances).
Both sell outs though. First time in the history of the school both nights sold out in advance.
I was there, sitting in the audience watching it (I don't have the pipes for a musical).
The reactions to this, phenomenal.
I was absolutely proud of the work we did in putting on this show.
As for Audrey II, it is Levi Stubbs of the legendary Motown group, The Four Tops who provides the voice.
One of honestly, the best memories I have of that time period. To this day, it remains among my favorite movies and stage shows of all time. I love both the dark ending and the theatrical ending.
And yes, the practical effects work. Exhaustion. The guy who was inside the plant for the stage play, he lost 20lbs between rehearsals and the two performances. (The puppeteer work has to be done inside of Audrey II to make it move right).
29:20: If I remember right, the dentist in the Roger Corman's original Little Shop of Horrors was played by Jack Nicholson who played the Joker in Tim Burton's Batman, so that is a funny little coincidence...😅
He was actually playing a patient at the dentist's office, Seymour poses as the dentist to treat him.
He played Bill Murray's part.
Also, a fun little easter egg. The plastic surgeon's tools in Batman are the same props as the dentist tools from this movie!
You could at least search for the film on YT and rewatch the scene
Good memories. I was 9 when my mom took me to the movie theater to see this.
Haven't seen it since than but to this day I still constantly say, "feed me Seymour".
I was just months from 9
One oddity of the happy ending is that they could only get two of the Greek Chorus actresses back to film it, so the camera pans down before you see the third girl's face.
I got to see the original off-Broadway production of this twice in 1983 with Ellen Greene as Audrey. It was so much fun live and I'm glad you guys got to see the ending that they used in the play, instead of the happier ending used in some of the movie versions.
It’s so bizarre seeing people now react to the cut ending. It was considered “lost” for a long time, while I fell in love with this movie with the theatrical “happy” ending. Long story short, test audiences hated the “bad” ending so it was replaced with the “happy” ending for its theatrical release.
This musical is everything!!! ❤
Rick Moranis is such a gem!
Steve Martin and Bill Murray in this crack me up so much, I definitely prefer the happy ending but the other ending is fun too lol 😂
Fun fact
The song "Somewhere that's Green" was the inspiration for "Part of your world" in the Little Mermaid.
You can even hear it in the final lines.
"Far from skid row...
I hope I'll go...
Somewhere, that's...Greeeeen!"
"Out of the sea...
Wish I could be...
Part of that...Wooooorld!"
One of my favorite musicals! Steve Martin as the dentist and Bill Murray as Arthur are hilarious! I love the Audrey 2s voice and when it sings. And I can't help but to think of the scene on Family Guy with Herbert the Pervert and Chris Griffin when Herbert is Audrey and Chris is Seymour!
Rick Moranis, nice, quiet little Seymour. was Dark Helmet in "Space Balls", just to praise his range a little.
These guys definitely like musicals.
Not true at all, musicals are our greatest fear.
@@OctoKrool I would bet good money if you watch Reefer Madness: the Movie Musical, you'd like that one too since you liked this one 😂
I'm really glad your giving the musicals a chance, there really are a lot of really good ones out there that dont get the recognition they deserve
Funny thing is soon after this movie, Rick Moranis and Steve Martin collaborate in My Blue Heaven. It's a funny movie about a mobster going into witness protection and building a friendship with his FBI handler. And it's based on the same notes pertaining to Henry Hill that were used to conceive Goodfellas.
The same husband and wife used those notes for their respective stories (Nicholas Pileggi for Wiseguy, which became the basis for Goodfellas, and Nora Ephron for My Blue Heaven).
It belongs to a friend of mine.
They also played brothers in law in parenthood
The music in this movie is fantastic!
I’m glad you gave this musical a chance! So much to love when you find a musical that sings to you. If you see this live, the plant starts tiny and magically takes over the stage! It’s awesome!
The original little shop of horrors that was made in 1960 had Jack Nicholson's first cameo as a patient at the dentist and the movie was made in three days
Whoooo !! Yes!
Wink Wilkinson : Gee, I wish you folks could see this. Hey Seymour, where did you get this WEEEEEEEEEEIRD plant?
Can’t wait to watch this classic and your reactions ! Steve Martin 😅😅😅
LITTLE SHOP 👏👏LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS 👏
The joke with Bill Murray's character is that he's a masochist, so he *wants* the kind of sadism Steve Martin would inflict - but because the patient is *enjoying* it, the Dentist can't.
Did you notice teenage Pam (Tischina Arnold) and Gina (Tisha Campbell) from Martin, My wife and kids and Everybody Hates Chris?
Fun fact: the actress who plays Steve Martin's nurse portrayed Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films.
Fun fact: Rick Moranis didn't need glasses originally. He found them on set, put them on, and he could suddenly see more.
That was terrible. :)
boooooooo
Man I really wish I could be in your shoes and watching this for the first time. I think this every time I watch a video like this. I grew up watching things like this on VHS (pretty much on repeat for months at a time) .. TV and movies are so different now days. Imagine watching this at 7 years old and on. And they wonder why we are the way we are .. lol
There are two different endings to this movie, you guys got the original ending where the plant wins. When it first came out in theaters, audiences didn't like the ending and the writers ended up changing it. Great reaction as always
This show has a special place in my heart...
Our show choir did it during my junior year, complete with a full-sized talking Audrey II.
We took second place that year, and everyone had a blast.
Me when I first clicked on this video: "Please be the cool ending! Please be the cool ending!"
By the end: "YESSSSSSSSS!"
- Audrey was played by Ellen Greene, who originated in the original Off-Broadway production.
- The voice of the plant Audrey II was Levi Stubbs, one of the original members of The Four Tops. The song "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" was written specifically for the film and was the first Oscar nomination for Alan Menkin (Music) and the late Howard Ashman (Lyrics). They would go on to start the Disney animation renaissance with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Howard died during the production of Aladdin but wrote most of the songs for the film.
- The film's director was Frank Oz, who was the voice behind Miss Piggy and Yoda. The reason the effects with Audrey II look so good is that Frank was one of the original puppeteers who was part of Jim Henson's world with Sesame Street and The Muppets. He would direct another great comedy with Steve Martin and Michael Caine called Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It's hysterical!!!
- The dentist character Steve Martin played has a song during his death scene in the stage version called "It's the Gas."
- The first guy to come into the flower shop was Christopher Guest...Nigel Tutnel from This Is Spinal Tap, Count Rugen the Six-Fingered Man from The Princess Bride, Mr. Jamie Lee Curtis (they have been married since the 1980s), and...not kidding...a British lord, the 5th Baron of Haden-Guest.
- This was based on an old black-and-white, low-budget Roger Corman film from 1960. The only cast member who went anywhere from that original film was the actor who played the same character Bill Murray played: three-time Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson.
- The ending you saw is how the stage show ends. Audrey II wins and kills everything with the other versions of it. However, when the film was released in theaters, that ending didn't play well, so they made a "happy ending" with Seymore killing the plant and going off to "somewhere that's green" with Audrey. The camera shows a little Audrey II cutting in the garden of the house they go into, and the plant gives a little smile.
I was so excited when I realized you were going to watch”Little Shop of Horrors”. I knew you would love it!!!
Movie has remained in my top 10 my entire life.
I was a theatre kid and this was my first musical at age 11!
Loved being on stage!
Only in that version, everyone dies at the end and there's a song being the audience "don't feed the plants"!!!
😂😂😂
I like the movie version eating the whole city!!!😂😂😂
I'm so glad you watched the dark ending. It feels more correct in terms of storytelling
Last year I was a piece of shit, then I subscribed to the Octokrool channel and I haven't stopped winning!!
This is my favorite musical of all time!!! I'm a big ol musical geek!!! I'm so glad you guys liked it!!!! And I'm glad you watched the directors cut!
The movie got two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song ("Mean Green Mother from Outer Space") and Visual Effects.
"Again, I don't like musicals....but I love this movie (that is a musical)." You doth protest too much. The genre is a wide one and there are many excellent shows. Keep your minds open!
One of the most fun musicals. Funny that you equated Steve Martin to the Joker. Some of his sadistic dental tools actually were re-used in filming Tim Burton's Batman a few years later in the surgery scene where Jack Nicholson becomes the Joker after falling into the vat. As far as visual effects go, they were way ahead of their time. The puppet was too big to film in real time and be as animated as you see it on screen or lip sync effectively, so they reduced the speed and shot it much slower, then sped up the playback. So everything's actually happening in slow motion, including Rick Moranis' acting. Insanely difficult to do, but you don't even notice it. They were nominated for an academy award for the visual effects that year in 1986, but ultimately lost to Aliens, a worthy competitor. I think Little Shop should've won, but I can't hate on Aliens at all.
The timing of this is crazy! I had to miss my cardio (where I usually watch you) for an emergency dentist appointment for a broken tooth and I thought about this movie the entire time, forgetting y’all were going to do it soon. Excited to watch this from my couch with my ice pack!
Candy bar!!!
Little Shop of Horrors is actually a custom shop in Tennessee that specializes in body dropping and painting mini trucks
I love this Asher/ Menkin not only wrote The little mermaid, but Audrey (the female) was also the voice of Ariel. But this is the best.
One of my favorite movies of all time since childhood. Forever my top 5 classic musicals.
Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!!!🥰🥰
He stood up , and looked shorter. Brilliant!
'Sunddenly Seymore' is one of the best songs. Also love the trio backup singers.
Little Shop??
With original Ending??
HELLS YEAH! I did not see this coming, and I am PSYCHED it's here!
The late Vincent Gardenia (Mr. Mushnik) is also brilliant in Moonstruck, which features Nic Cage, the late Olympia Dukakis, and Cher! Highly recommend it
Whoa! I've never seen that ending before!!!
I'm so happy they have made it the official ending now. True to the stage show
@@TheMess9898it’s not the official ending. It’s just an alternate ending. They just happened to watch that one
@@thedogwoods5716 Its the ending found in most streaming and rental now.
Hell yeah - one of my favorite movies and my favorite ending. I saw the live version like an eon ago but was used to the happy ending, so I was surprised that the live musical had a different ending, but also a much bigger version of that ending was filmed and dropped from the movie... thank god for the director's cut. A lot more of the big reactors who haven't seen this need to do it.
In high school we put on the stage play, and I was picked to give the voice for Audrey 2. One of the most fun things I ever did in school, we had such a good time with it. One night I had some sweet old lady say I sounded just like Elvis. A very demented, murderous Elvis plant, I guess.
It’s cool that you guys are watching the directors cut of the movie personally I like the actor version better because it ends much differently. It has a happier ending. This one staying more faithful to the original movie I think.
And the original musical too.
The history behind this movie is incredible. Started as an off-broadway straight play (i.e. not a musical). Then someone bets Roger Corman that he can't film a movie version in 2 days (he does). It becomes a cult classic. Then Menken and Ashman (the guys who most famously wrote the music for The Little Mermaid), who were fans of the original movie, wrote the musical version as kind of a goof. It becomes an off-broadway hit. THEN Hollywood comes calling and makes this movie version. 😂
If you know somebody that says they hate musicals just show them this movie. So many big names doing things you'd never expect.
This is just a fun horror movie, not too graphic, and just enough slapstick.🤘🎃🤘
Good choice! You guys should definitely react to Casper
I still want to live in the house from that movie!
I second this!
This movie makes me feel older than egypt😂
Oh you don't know about old television. They were not allowed to be seen in the same bed back in the old days. It was immoral. I LOVE LUCY they always had twin beds.
Glad you got to see the original ending which is more true to the stage version. But do check out the modified ending that was actually in what was released in movie theatres/on video.
I love this movie. It brings back so many great memories. My dad worked for PopeJoy theater 🎭in Albuquerque, New Mexico and he actually made all of the Audrey's 🌱 including the large one at the end . He sewed and controlled Audrey's mouth during the plays. It was pretty amazing being backstage and watching everything happen.
Good choice for Shocktober!
This was my favourite musical up until South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut came out, but I still love this - its a masterpiece. I always regarded the Skid Row characters to be essentially human Muppets - very Jim Hensony
The original 'Little Shop of Horrors' (1960) was created by Roger Corman on a bet that he couldn't make a feature-length movie in only 48 hours.
My favorite musical
The actor who played the first customer after Audrey II was introduced was also the 6 fingered man from The Princess Bride
I honestly can't decide if I like the alternate ending or the theatrical ending more. The Alt ending is soooo good, but I really want Audrey to have a happy ending 😔
Edit: Also shout out to Howard Ashman. Gone WAY too soon.
I’m so happy you guys did this one!! And also was so thrown off by this ending haha I ran to the comments to see if I was the only one 🤣
One of the best and funniest musicals EVER!!!!❤❤❤
This ending is how the stage show ended, but screen test audiences recieved it really poorly. Frank Oz theorized it was because in stage shows, the actors come back out for bows after the ending and the audience gets reassurance that it was all an act, when in movies you don’t get that. So that’s why there’s what is called the “theatrical” ending version of this movie, which was the version that was first released in theatres and involved Audrey II being defeated and Seymour and Audrey getting married and moving to the country house in her vision earlier in the movie. However the camera pans to a baby audrey II plant in their garden who smirks at the camera, suggesting it’s not over yet.
So glad you guys finally watched this movie!! One of my favorites.
The best part about the dentist scene is the Sadist VS Masochist dynamic. Brilliant.
I don't know anyone that doesn't love Rick Moranis, as an actor and as a person.
I've seen this movie 40xs at least. NEVER have I seen this alternate ending!
Haha I saw this when I was very young and didn’t know what to think of it. It was playing on late night TV for a while too so I watched it a several more times and loved it. I grew up now surrounding myself with plants. There was at one point an obsession with carnivorous plants. 🌱 😂
Clicked so fast!! I still love this movie!
I love this musical, it's my all time favorite. I played one of the DooWop girls in my community theater production back in high school and the Twoie puppet is SO COOL. Ours had a little slide in the mouth and we set it up so the people it ate slid down and off the back of the stage onto a mattress 😂
I love the first act of this movie so much, but I really feel like it falters during the second act, at least after "Suddenly Seymour", anyway. The stage musical leans into the whole Faustian bargain aspect of the story at this point, with Seymour going further and further down the path to the dark side until he's overcome with guilt and basically commits suicide by Plant, at which point, of course, Audrey IIs take over the world. All of his darker choices are cut or changed for the movie, however, which makes the ending much more nihilistic than is suited for the dark comedy that came before. But as I said, everything up through "Suddenly Seymour" is absolute fire, and one of the best movie musicals ever made.
This is the first time I have seen this ending. I had read it existed, but never saw it. Cool! Lol
Probably my favourite musical - catchy songs, great premise. Even got to play the dentist when I was a teen.
I have loved this show since I saw it off Broadway at seven. I listened to the album so much and had a battery powered Audrey II bank. If you put a penny inside the plant eats it.
Mean and Green was nominated for best original song. Levi Stubbs sang it live at the Oscars. He wore a purple suit and there was an Audrey II swaying in the background. It was the first nominated song which contained profanity.
my first musical i ever watched and learned all the songs too. then years later watched as an adult and the dentist is still my favourite character
Back when animatronic robots and practical effects ruled.
Thank you for reacting to this movie. ON my birthday, no less! I love your reactions and this movie! ❤
