- Looking forward to this year's Halloween "thing". Tomorrow we're going to see "Sweeny Todd" on Broadway. I read the synopsis on Wikipedia and it sounds pretty interesting. Lynn plans on watching the movie tonight to get familiar with it. While it's not a big deal to me, some people might find it interesting that this production features two pretty well known performers - Josh Groban and Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things).
"Wrathchild" by Iron Maiden off of their "Killers" album which came out in 1981 and featured Steve Harris on bass.
I'm playing the Bruce Thomas Profile Signature bass through a Genzler Magellan preamp pedal.
Where Geddy Lee is the technique/technical master, Steve Harris is the stamina beast. Wrathchild isn't even anywhere near the most insane stuff Harris chugs through without missing a beat. Powerslave (album) is mind-numbing bass stamina. Mad props for covering this and you did a great job!
Yes. Two different approaches, but two bass legends. Thanks.
I completely agree with you! Geddy Lee and Steve Harris have always been my two favorite electric bassists. They were my primary influencers while learning how to play the electric bass and pursuing songwriting in my youth. It was a joy to see Troy covering this energetic tune!
According to what I’ve been able to gather. Steve has the strings set ridiculously low and the pickups set as absolutely high as he can so he plays with minimum effort. He also chalks his fingers to reduce friction. He’s also probably from whatever planet Geddy Lee is originally from.
All of those things make sense.
Holy hell Troy - your "trimmed" version was still one whale of a workout and absolutely served the song well! Fantastic as usual!
Absolutely! Agreed. That was amazing.
Thanks so much!
@@ralhamami on fire 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Steve Harris is the reason I started to play bass. I'm 53 now and there are still a few songs that I have not mastered. When I play them I "cheat" a little.
Interessante, eu tenho 54 anos e me dedico ao baixo e o Steve Harrys e minha referência de baixo desde a adolescência nos anos 80!
Very cool! That's a tough role model to emulate as a beginner. There was a fellow whose channel was called "The Welsh Phantom" and he did, mostly, Iron Maiden covers. He was really good, but, somehow, lost his channel. I think he started a new one, but I lost touch with him... super nice guy.
SAME!
@@TJH3113 interesting
A rare Iron Maiden sighting on this channel. I love playing this song & I loved your cover of it. Yeah, those Steve Harris compositions are a work out on the plucking fingers. Thanks for this cover and tutorial, very appreciated.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Killer job, Tony!
I really love how Iron Maiden never lost their sound. Always stayed true to their lyrical and musical roots, and you can never go wrong with Harris on bass.
Even with his massive catalog, I still get the biggest kick from the first two albums.
His aggression on those more punk inspired albums is just awesome!🤘🏻
I have a vague memory of reading something a long time ago. It was by a critic, either reviewing an album or just his analysis of the band. He said (I'm paraphrasing), "Every Iron Maiden song sounds the same." And followed up with, "But it's a good song."
@@TJH3113 That very much sums it up. Chord progressions and rhythms tend to be the same in Iron Maiden's catalog, especially in the 80s era, but it's something that you can't ever get enough of. Really says something about how powerful their music is.
@@Daddy53751 Raw power! Dual guitar harmony, galloping bass, mind-blowing fast drums, and Bruce's vocals are unmatched!
@@RC32Smiths01 well, the first two albums Paul D’ianno was the singer, but I know exactly what you’re saying.
I lucked out and saw them open for Scorpions on Dickinsons first tour with Maiden, and it was stunning for sure!
Such a sick bassline. One of the countless ones by Harris, man's a beast.
Truth!
Sounds so good! Your tone is always amazing. The first two Iron Maiden albums are probably my favorite.
Thank you John!
Totally agree on your choice of Maiden albums. Killers is my favourite one of theirs 🤘
This line is a MONSTER. I’ve never fully got that intro up to speed without falling down haha.
You and me both!
Falling down! Falling down! Falling down!
Steve Harris best bass in world....🎸🤘🤘👍👍
There are many people who would agree with this statement.
Great playing as always Troy - the fact that you do the videos straight to camera makes them much more fun than if they were heavily edited.
Thank you. Yeah, if I were to edit the audio and video I might come up with a more polished product, but I'd be spending a lot of time doing something I really don't want to be doing. Another thing, if I recorded the audio separately and punched in when I made an error, I wouldn't need to spend nearly as much time preparing to record. But, that would mean miming my playing. I have one, or two, videos where I've done that and I can honestly tell you, it took me more time to fake it than it would have for me to just record it in one continuous take.
Maiden!! Maiden!! Maiden!! One of the first songs I learned on guitar as a teenager.
Up the irons! Very cool.
Wratchild period, the "real" Iron Miaden. What a great, punchy, busy bassline. Requires some stamina.
I'm glad you liked it.
I used to play in a band that did a cover of this, my plucking hand would be numb by the end and I wore my teeth down gritting them lol.
The song that always gave problems was Aces High. I always asked to keep as close as possible to the end of the gig otherwise I would run out of stamina before the end.
Haha! I feel your pain.
When you commented about the speed that Steve plays at, my next thought is always that he plays that frenetic pace for 2+ hours a night. It boggles my mind that he can play that fast for that long. I guess it gives the rest of us something to shoot for.
Quite a number of people have pointed out the same thing. He's like the Angus Young of bass players.
Incredible fingerwork.
Thank you
Loved the tone and the way you played! Regards from Brazil!
Thanks a lot!
Nice presentation with real life problems. Sounded great! Thanks.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Next up Troy, "Run To The Hills" just in time for Thanksgiving!😆 You can do it, Troy!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Fat chance!
Very respectable adaptation.
Thank you Brian.
Your awesome brother
You are too kind
You are always awesome Troy 🥰
Thank you, Cindy!
Steve Harris is the Geddy Lee of heavy metal
Truth!
Thanks for this Troy. I saw this a while back so maybe that is why subliminally I bought Killers on CD. Had to learn this song. Now I pull this up and it should be very helpful. It’s nice to see some of the techniques you use to “get through” the song. This should free me up!
It was my pleasure and I thank you for watching.
Great job mate! for what it"s worth, and this is not denigrating Mr Harris in any way, but he has a very low action on his bass and uses a very light touch on his right hand. This certainly helps with speed. Endurance is another matter altogether. Hard to believe there are some who don't rate him at all.
Those things helps with endurance, too!
Thank you! Yes, that's what I've heard, though it certainly doesn't sound like he's playing lightly... or using flat wounds. I don't think I've ever heard from anyone who doesn't give him his due but, then again, the topic doesn't come up very often.
I used to play this back in 1982 in my band.. as well as other songs off of the "KILLERS" album.
My 19-year-old hands had a hell of a time. Thank god the band was loud and the 2 guitars were wailing.
I mainly just had to nail that first, opening lick well, then I could blend in..
>> On the final, descending lick after "I'm coming to get you - ooh yeah".. that weird "Open A",.. is CRAZY!
Thanks Marvine! Hope you have a great evening.
Those are 16ths arent they. I wouldnt be able to put that together either. You did better than I could.
Thanks Troy!
Oh jeez... they probably are 16th, but I'm musically illiterate. I'm glad you got the gist of it though. Take care!
I saw "Wrathchild" and thought ... really? I was a huge Maiden fan during the 80's and had almost all of the albums. Steve Harris' bass playing really caught my attention. You did an excellent job, and it hardly seemed clipped.
I hear you. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Thanx for the video, I learned many songs from you before, it´s cool to hear you talking on this one. I just want to say that I am not sure if your followers see what a great achievement it is from you to play this song in one take without editing, and honestly - I am not sure if Steve Harris can play it as tight as you did...I am a semi professional bass player and I don´t remember the last time when I was that impressed by a bass player...thanx!!!!
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I've thought, once or twice, about learning how to edit videos (or to have someone else do it), but I think it's more honest this way. Thanks so much for the kind words.
Making it through an Iron Maiden song without missing a beat is admirable, you rock Troy. The fact that Steve Harris does this for a whole concert, for decades, I gotta believe that dude can squeeze coal into diamonds without breaking a sweat
Thanks.
Truth!
Amazing video. Thanks for playing Iron Maiden
Thanks so much!
Ahhh!! Been waiting for this one for a long time. Superb!!!
Thanks a lot Sam! I hope the Guild is treating you well.
@@TJH3113 💯
Well done sir ! i am an Iron Maiden fan for years and Steve Harris is my hero he let me pick up the bass😊👌🏻
Thank you! Wonderful!!!
I love honestly and true fullness that’s what we love watching you , amazing play ♠️♠️♠️♠️
Thank you very much Jean Marie.
Great video! I appreciate you talking frankly about the speed and stamina challenges and how you chose to work around them. Valuable insight for other players. I've been a fan of Steve Harris since I was a teenager (when Powerslave came out), but as someone not born with a fast right hand, his lines have always been challenging. I had to learn the Billy Sheehan 3 finger picking technique to get that kind of speed. It's amazing how quick Steve can play with 2 fingers. I hear he has a surprisingly light touch, and that's part of the "trick".
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment.
I loves me some Maiden. Good job man.
Thank you.
For me, the trick to playing these lines smoothly is to play them very lightly. I let my fingers slide over the strings and hardly ever dig in. Digging in when playing 8ths or 16ths slows me down considerably. Raking wherever possible also helps a lot.
Allegedly, Steve Harris plays with a very light touch and uses flat wound strings.
Thanks for this! When learning certain bass lines I often have to adapt them to my technique (or lack thereof, lol!) Nice to see I'm not the only one who does this. Especially someone on your level. Cheers!
Sometimes, when we try to adapt, we come up with something exciting and new.
Nailed the tone
Thanks
Brilliant! Such a brilliant song. Steve had ridiculous stamina!
Thanks! TRUTH!!!
Killer job!
Thanks Joe!
I think we all feel the pain of trying to cover Steve Harris. An excellent cover of a great Maiden song!! You Rock!
I'm glad you can relate. Thanks!
One of the reasons I enjoy watching you play is your technique. You have a really good economy of motion and by studying your attack and fretting,it really helped me to clean up my own bass playing. Along with your tone, which is always so distinct.
Thanks so much. "Economy of motion" is definitely something I put a lot of work into, not only in my bass playing, but in many other areas of my life. I'm always looking for the most efficient way to do things. Not out of laziness, but for the sake of comfort and efficiency.
Yes!
Thanks!
Steve Harris was and still is in my pantheon of bass gods. Iron Maiden is what happens when a monster bass player runs a metal band.
Awesome!
Que felicidade ver que você ainda faz vídeos você toca de maneira impecável, assisto seus vídeos desde quando eu era criança
Muito obrigado por ser um espectador tão fiel!
Just imagine you’re playing Rio or girls on film… it’s a hurtle… and I’ve never seen you fall. You are a BAD ASS!!! Still, thank you so much for show how you mentally and physically attack the “more difficult” lines. You are amazing Fonz!!!
Aw shucks...
I became a maiden fan around 85. Live after death was relatively new. That album also introduced me alot of the back catalog. You fellas that got a couple years on me, I've envied what it must have been like to experience those albums and be influenced by. Once again you showed my ear a few things I've overlooked or just the older songs didn't jive with me. I actually like your way of leaving out some of those eighth notes. Cleaner. Harris for me became repetitive as the years when on. I was heavily into maiden up to 7th son. I was always proud and Glad Rush changed with the times ✌️
Thanks for taking the time to leave such an awesome comment!
Great job Troy. I used to play this in my band in the 80's. You're spot on. I also loved your Powerslave video by Maiden you did a while back.
Thanks a lot... I appreciate it!
I play in a Maiden tribute. The secret to playing Steve Harris lines is to crank the amp and have an extremely light touch. Feather light. It's the only way to get through a two hour show of this stuff. Its difficult at first and feels counterintuitive but with a bit of practice it makes a lot sense. Thanks for all of your "Killer" posts!
Thanks for confirming that! Do you use flat-wounds as well? Also, do you find it difficult to transition between the "Steve Harris" touch and a normal playing velocity?
I like a bright tone so I use DR Hi-Beam round wound stainless steel strings. I usually play a Jazz, Ric, Stingray or Kubicki. I find it somewhat difficult getting back into ultra-light touch mode as most of my playing is medium touch finger style and pick to heavy for slap. I'm working on evening out my touch but it's tough. I really enjoy your videos. You're my go to!
@@TJH3113
As a guitar/bass player myself there are ways to execute lines. Not all of us can mimic our hero's. Well done sir! And im a big Rush fan and Iron maiden fan.
Yes, you just need to use your imagination and the skills that you do possess. In some cases you wind up coming up with something fresh and new. Thanks so much!
God bless you my brother.
And you as well. Thanks.
Sounded perfect to me! Wasted Years is a nice easy one but Hallowed be thy Name is like you say, leave a few notes out, hammer on and pull off instead and to my ear, it sounds 'OK'!
Thank you!
Your middle finger retracting back up like a landing gear while making that killer staccato sound is unbelievable. Harris is a madman while being super selective and articulate w notes! Fitting song for Halloween, love the masks as always 😎🤟🎃
Does it do that? At this point, I'm on autopilot. Thanks and take care!
Great cover as always, Troy! Love your attack on this one, I actually prefer your tone to Steve’s on this one. Would love to hear your take on At the Dance by Corey Hart, could never figure out some of the licks myself.
Thanks so much! I'll check it out... thank you for the suggestion. (is that the "Sunglasses At Night" dude?)
@@TJH3113 Haha indeed it is; I believe its even on the same album if I'm not mistaken.
Yeeeeeees! I love it! I'm a huge Maiden fan Troy. You killed it. There are always those songs we play no matter the instrument that we have to learn to slightly modify to get through. As always, YOU nail the feel when you play these. It's always a treat to watch you play.
Thanks so much!
Used to play the Killers album a lot back in the early 80’s. Paul Dianno had a great voice. Steve Harris is just a machine. Nice cover, Troy. 👍
Very cool! Thanks a lot!
Awesome. What a job ! That first trim actually sounds better with the slight pause 👍🏻
Thank you!
I hit the 'subscribe' button before this vid finished. I love how you talk your way through the parts, very helpful! Harris was one of the reasons I picked up a bass and the main reason I have a P bass with a maple neck 🤘
Awesome! Thank you!
Increíble, maestro Troy.
¡Muchas gracias!
Troy, that was fantastic, loved it! Steve Harris is a machine!
Glad you enjoyed it
🤘🤘🤘
Thanks!
Love this. Bought an electric guitar to switch it up but I couldn't resist this one. Love what you do.
Thanks so much.
Steve Harris perfected the galloping bass line. I can't imagine playing that fast for a 2+ hour concert.
He has a very light touch, his plucking hand is relaxed.
Truth... when I was young, I was certain he played with three fingers, but it's just two. As the fellow below mentioned, he actually plays with a very light touch and uses flatwound strings... two things i never would have guessed from listening to him.
He uses super fat flats at that. Though he doesn't dig as hard as Geddy he still digs pretty hard but has to stay relaxed enough to not tense up like you said. Great cover as usual, Troy!
Love how you explain your breakdown!
Thanks so much.
Excellent!!! So happy to see Iron Maiden here. Great job on the song!!! I saw them Sept. 30 in Edmonton and they were brilliant as always. Thanks very much.
Thanks Nick! Awesome!
Wow, impressive! Is that three strumming fingers? I'll leave it to the professionals, haha. Nice job!
Thank you! No, just two, though I would have sworn that he used 3 when I first heard him.
Hi Troy, well done! Steve Harris is a tough act to follow and you did well. My wife and I saw Sweeney Todd years ago in London's West End, with Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, and it's a great show. Have a good time!
Thank you! No doubt. Very cool!... We are looking forward to it. Lynn is watching the Tim Burton version now. I was vaguely familiar with the story, but was surprised at how much backstory there is to it. There's a lot going on.
I'm glad that you chose to cover this song as I haven't heard it in a while. Excellent playing as always! I like the commentary that you put at the end.
I'm very glad that you liked it. Thanks so much!
The smile gave it away LOL!!! I thought it was great!
If you want a REAL Maiden workout try "Phantom Of The Opera".
Did I let one slip? Thanks!
Someone else mentioned that song...
Sounding great, as usual. Every new video from you is a treat. Thank you my friend
So nice of you to say... Thank you.
Great!!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!
Wild! I was searching for a video of you playing this song last night 🤯
These things happen sometimes.
Great video! Loved the advice at the end about imagining you can play faster than what you need to in order to play fast bursts easier
Thanks!
It's great to see you still making video's! I feel like I have grown up watching you. lol
Yeah, I'm still at it. A few weeks ago, Lynn and I had some time to kill before a Peter Gabriel show and we went to Sam Ash to do it. A young fellow who worked there recognized me and said he used to watch my videos when he was young. I asked him how old he was and he said, "26."
@TJH3113 I'm a little older than that, I'm 32, but I know I've been watching you since 2010 at minimum
Loved it Troy! That 64th note gallop is exhausting!!!
I'm happy to hear that! Am I up to 64th's already?
lol youll know when you are!! My hand turns into one big cramp when i get close !@@TJH3113
Wow totally unexpected and fantastic lol. Not many could pull this off. More than a great job here!! He was one of my main inspirations in my early years and this was one of the first IM songs I attempted. Thanks for bringing back some great memories
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. Do you still have your bass channel? I'd like to link them both when I upload the Jellyfish song. I've been putting it off, but I'll probably record it later this week. I really enjoyed learning and rehearsing it. Oh, never mind, I see this comment is from your bass channel.
@@TJH3113 Lol so funny I jut happen to log into it today . I haven't posted a video in a loooong time. Awesome I'm looking forward to it. There really aren't many covers on YT.
Awesome. Thanks for playing one of my favorite bass lines. Good job.
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for this really nice own cover and the explanations.
Glad you liked it!

Great job Troy! One of your most informative videos. 👍
Thanks Paul!
Excelente cover ! Para os milhares de Fan do iron maiden! Grande clássico do metal!😂
Muito obrigado!!!
Great job and what a nasty pbass tone. Harris was one of the reasons I picked up my first bass.
Thank you! You are not alone in this thread about having been inspired to pick up the bass by Steve Harris.
Yeaaaaahhhhhhhhh! Love the solo section(s). Hard to believe this album is already... (gasp) 4 decades young?
Regarding the "tensing up" and "digging in" that you talk about around 7 min/ 8 min, I immediately think of John Entwistle and how sometimes, watching his right hand... it seems effortless and like he is barely tapping the strings. Of course, his volume was probably always turned up to 11 or 12... but you get my drift (I hope).
Awesome, I’m glad you liked it!
Hey Man you did a KILLER!!!! job on the song!!!! Thanks for posting this.
Haha... Thanks!
Works for me! What a fingerfull that one is.
Thanks!
Killer song and Killer bass playin'. Love it.
Thanks, Darren!
That's a great cover, Troy!
I've played a lot of maiden bass lines (Steve Harris is why I play bass, not guitar), but I still don't get the speed on everything every time.
Recon the spirit of the tune is what counts 🙂
Thank you very much!
Pretty perfect meeting of music and backdrop :)
Sometimes... these things happen.
We have a guy here in Connecticut who plays in a Iron Maiden tribute band “Wrathchild” . Guy is amazing and I don’t know how he pulls it off doing a 2-3hr show. He usually is dripping in sweat 15 minutes into the show running around and playing as he has all of Steve Harris technique / style down. Is it a coincidence his name is also Steve? You did a great job covering the song and breaking everything down.
Very cool... I'll look them up. Thanks so much.
That’s insane. Bravo 👏
Thanks Art!
