This song and Orion from Metallica got me into the bass at age 14. I am now 45 and still playing. It's too bad Cliff is not with us him and Steve would be jamming together as titans of heavy metal bass.
The first time I heard this song as a kid I thought the middle bit was too long, I now understand that it's there in order to save bass players of the world from getting tendonitis.... 😂
My favorite Maiden song, & likely my favorite song in general! As a kid when the album was new loved listening to this from Piwerslave or Live after Death driving around in the back of my step-dad's Camaro with a sound system (for the day). Maiden really fueled, my live for history, poetry, & even science fiction as I always researched their lyrics this was well before Google.
This is part of the why Steve Harris is the greatest metal bass player of all times! His sound is unmistakeable, his playing is exciting and his creativity both playing and as a writer have no match. PS: your videos are a treat to watch!
It's funny how the the sound of fingers sliding over the strings ends up being such a big part of expressing the creaking of the boards of the ship. I never took it anywhere really, but Steve Harris inspired me to play bass. Thumbs up for showing the world!
Great job Didier you had the guts to cover it all, from the 7.49 mark onwards I literally cried, that solo from Smith the subsequent double melody still sends chills down my spine to this very day. Horns up!!!!!
Perfect bass cover, as all the others you have uploaded until now! Extra credit for this one, because it is extra long song, and the bass line is very difficult to play all-in-one-time. I mean, 14 minutes of continuous finger galloping is not so easy when you try it...! Congratulations Didier..!
So good. Damn if that ain't as close to the recording as possible. Must be the greatest relief ever when the slow part comes along. I wish I learned with my fingers instead of a pick (started on pop punk), I don't think I'll ever get my dexterity to this degree.

Hey, cheers ;) It depends of your morphology and also practice. DG
One of the longest songs ever...and more difficult Maiden songs (endurance!) ..but most beautiful ones..indeed!! One of my first loved Irons songs... Greatings from Argentina!
Dude, how do you do it? I’ve been playing for 25 years and I think I’m pretty damn good. I cannot make it through this song without becoming completely exhausted and my forearms cramping up. I just can’t do it. I don’t know how Harris does it at his age while running across a 90 foot stage, well don maestro. Mad respect on my end!👍😎
I don't wanna be that guy but maybe you're overestimating your skills. I'm 18 years old and play bass since 2022 and can play this song just fine besides for the fast part right before the slow part @@chrisk920
Il pezzo più bello che' abbia composto Harris in tutta la sua carriera e tu come sempre sei stato MAGISTRALE!!! Le tue Cover sono uniche e senza eguali...numero uno!!!
Masterpiece, the Tone! the song, the absolute physical workout must be exhausting, I can’t imagine playing a 2 hour set like this. You have skill my friend.
Excellent theme musical, this song talk about the story of a ancient mariner that in the night him enter in trance and the bass electric was mention at the agony that him supported over night; sometimes I thought that is a story similar at the of the holandez flew. Should to have been terrible navigator only in the sea for the night and it's incredible that music has a sound special with very feeling by whichever that is hearing. Thanks for upload and share for all, that electric bass sound to glory man. Wram regards !
This is absolutely superb! I've watched this many times (and your other videos on the 'difficult part' and Steve's technique). You are total class and a maasive help in trying to nail this epic bass line. Many thanks!
is it normal to feel like crying with such a great song? I must have a great connection with the song, because it touches my heart directly, and many songs do that to me, mainly from Iron Maiden.

Hey Nathan, sure it is. They get involved very deep in their lyrics and put their hearts in them. So maybe you're empathic enough to vibe with them. Or perhaps you were a mariner in a former life and you killed the bird of good omen. haha. Take care. DG
When I was younger I tried to play songs like this on the bass, but wasn't able to do so! Today I'm happy to see videos like this one, playing so perfectly! I guess someone must have a kind of "superpower" to play like Steve Harris!

Cheers ;) No superpower, just the power of practice
No, you’re wrong Gerome. It’s tech make I could never use that third finger while playing the bass with my fingers, to do that gala that Harris does. Is that what you’re doing you’re using three fingers? You pulled this off flawlessly. I’ve never seen anyone, but Harris do it as well. 👍
Man, you did it great. As a former guitarrist, (who used to try and fingerpick bass lines on an acoustic guitar) I see two major difficulties to play the bass lines of this song. The first one is to keep the gallop going well during the whole track. The second is to keep the slow part of the track on the beat (those #5 chords). You showed true endurance to sustain the alternate fingerpicking on your right hand and yet making the bass line sounding great. Steve Harris was a fucking animal on his bass, and yet sounded so melodical. Thumbs up, man! Cheers, from Goiânia-GO/Brazil.

I think one should not care about chords in a song that was composed random, just to gratify ears. I seriously doubt Steve cared about the notes he played when he composed it. You can find notes (A,C#,F => A+ chord) etc. but just enjoy the ambiance and forget the rest, more pleasant to play that way. Thanks for your question anyway. DG
Hi, I'm watching your channel recently, I cost a lot to find it, I saw many covers of Iron Maiden but nobody play the bass as you do, you have the technique of harris perfectly dominated How many years did it take? I haven't seen anyone on RUclips that resembles Harris's way of playing, just you. I downloaded all your Iron maiden videos to my computer, you're a master sorry for my bad english.

Thank you so much ! It didn't take that long actually. As soon as I made the decision to play like him, like everything in life by the way. All my gratitude ;)
I will tell you some thing, I don’t know what country you live in, but you’re probably the only one living there that could be a shoe wind for a high end, maiden tribute band
Awesome performance as ever, Didi! Just if I can give you some constructive feedback, at the 5.30 minute arpeggio try to "jump" the fingers from one fret to another instead of sliding keeping pressed to the strings to avoid this annoying "SHRRRIECKKKK" sound when fingers slides across the strings. Honestly, 30 years ago I known nothing about Stevie's bass rig and I played with rounded Daddario or Fender strings too, but now I think that flat strings could minimize that sliding noise
