The machines you're comparing are different classes my dude. Desktop vs mobile parts makes a noticeable difference.

No, I do not agree at all.
What you just said is what Dell wants you to think about these 2 product lines, so obviously their marketing has worked.
What is the likelyhood that after buying a machine with the 2070 anyone in their right mind is going to spend 1600$ (more outside of US) to slightly upgrade their GPU (to 2080)? Dell is the only vendor you can get the card from and then your 2nd hand card has near to no market to sell it on to make something back (unlike generally compatible drives or RAM).
If one has the money to spend then we are essentially talking about the fact that M17 is limited to 16GB of RAM and aesthetic differences. I would add the aspect of needing to run 2 adapters on Area-51M if anything from practical perspective too. I find the solution inconvenient and surplus instead of just running one big brick and calling it a day. People buying these machines are not lugging these around daily anyway.
Bottom spec Area-51M machines are just worse in spec than the cheaper M17 and just fiscally terrible decisions.
No need to eat from their hand, look for minuscule spec differences (e.g. screens) and focus more to the core aspects (spec vs. money spent).

@@PROcNATION thats not what Dell whants me to believe. I have an m17r4 and an Area 51M. The 51 has a desktop CPU and GPU. Not "desktop grade" but desktop. And that's the reason for the 2 power supplies. Its desktop parts, they require more power, and the highest wattage power supply you can take on an airplane is 330W. 330W is not enough power to run a desktop, complete with the monitor etc, so they have to use a second one. Please do some research.

@@gjvah Since you are so polite I am not going to argue too much with you but all I see is someone having eaten up the marketing.
It may have whatever but essentially they are just busting people chops. These "desktop" CPU & GPU are not just compatible with everything off the shelf. I am unsure whether whether all desktop CPUs are 1:1 compatible but as informed as you are you should know that for GPU they run somesort of in-house compatibility module and 51M can only be upgraded within a generation of 51Ms. Meaning: 2nd gen 51M top of the line card is 2080 straight from Alienware for something like 1600$ and that is it.
That is very limited compared to a regular rig if this can be called „upgradeability“ at all (well, technically - it still is).
The fact that you have both machines is not some sort of argument, it maybe only makes you biased. Being able to critically think is where the knowledge lies.

@@PROcNATION again, its a desktop CPU. Not any different than one you get in a box. You can remove it and put it in a desktop. I swapped my 9700k with a 9900K on my first A51M. 2 minites of googling will give you this info. I didn't say anything about price, don't move the goal posts.

I just bought an M17 R3 a week ago. It's the rtx 2070 with 300hz screen. To my utter disgust, you can't upgrade the RAM and I got 16gb. I wonder how long 16gb will be good for? I am super tempted to send it back and get the base model Area 51M R2 for around 2100. I paid 1650 for my current and its a beast. Not sure what to do as the Area 51m R2 is a 2060. Thoughts? Especially on the 16gb RAM. That should be enough for a long time, but open to thoughts. Oh as an edit, I got the exact machine you were looking at for 1660.00 US Dollars. So that was a smoking deal, hate to give it up over soldered RAM.

If it was possible then I would get this one as I mentioned in the video:
      www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/alienware-area-51m-r2-gaming-laptop/spd/alienware-area51m-r2-laptop/wn51mr230s
I think the lowest I saw during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday was around 2500$, atm. with the "EXTRA150" they are running now it would be 2736$.
I see no point in paying 1000$ extra for i9 & 2080. I'd keep the 1000$ and invest it.
Comes with the 3200MHz XMP RAM which one can always sell & change for the 64GB configuration.
One can choose to get the 360Hz 5ms for "real gaming" (for multiplayayer FPS?) or pay extra 80$ for the prettier to look at UHD screen.
SSD setup is really up preference & does not matter because easy to upgrade. The 2TB RAID option seems personally to me the most desirable option from the point of value for money.
Difficult to spec something for someone else but definitely I would stay away from other graphics cards and would get the 2070 (or 2080 if pockets deep) option.
Also, you can look at it this way - the M17 R3 is a decent machine. You save 1000$, run it for a year or so and the machine itself will be still worth something and you could look into getting a new one next year around. If you are a casual user (like me) then the M17 R3 should still have aplenty of poke.

Yah, I wish I got a Clevo with the same specs. Friggen dells has locked the XMP functions if you don't buy it with 64 at 2900 or 32 at 3200 on the Alienware A51m r2

I hate how u can’t upgrade the 2060 or 5700 to the 300 hz panel . They force you to get the 2070 super.

I purchased a M51 R2 with the 360hz screen, 32gb 3200mhz ram, a 10700k and a 2070 super. I did this because the prices on midrange and higher GPUs are so exorbitant that any cost savings from building a tower are gone, and I wouldn't even be able to take it with me on business trips. Thin and light gaming laptops were a mistake. My m15 r4 with a 1070 cooked itself to death after a year of use and if I hadn't bought the warranty I would have eaten the cost of it. I think the mistake I made was thinking it would handle VR. Yes, it can produce playable framerates, but it cannot keep itself cool enough long term. My hope is that the M51 will give me enough thermal overhead to provide high refresh rates and some WMR VR gaming on the side without cooking itself to death. I don't care about 4k. 4k is a meme. To Dell's credit, they sent someone to my house to fix it in 3 business days. Their warranty is actually worth the money. The comparison to Apple is valid I guess. I think most of the hatred is just sour grapes from people who can't afford nice things because they're not willing to work hard for them. If you call Dell directly and ask nicely they will take a lot off the price and even throw in some goodies. I got almost 1k off the sticker price for my laptop and even got a free hoodie.

To start off - thank you for the well formed comment. It is appreciated when someone takes time to form their thoughts on the Internet.
Interesting insight into m15 R4 ownership. 17 R4 that I have manages to stay at around 80c° (1070 GPU temp) with a little help from a GoPro mount I use to prop it up to allow slightly better airflow. 17 R4 definitely has a bulky frame compared to laptops of these days but I would have not assumed that it is that much better off for it than the m15. Obviously, it makes sense that in compact packaging the airflow and heat dissipation are even more crucial.
I too only have praise for Dell's warranty services. I bought my PC at home (in Estonia), was living in England in a smaller city and no problem - IT technician came and replaced my keyboard under warranty.
The last point is kind of puzzling... You are preaching about working hard and being able to afford (relatively) expensive things (which is all nice and dandy) but then you bring out some cheap hoodie as a bargaining point. People who know their value do not sell themselves short with a free hoodie... :D
1k off sticker price sounds good though.
Thank you for watching & taking time to comment.

bro have you watched this video ruclips.net/video/YkTyRShVKYo/видео.html, this is not the only laptop which comes with 2 adaptors, you need more wats for more performance, an rtx 2080 graphic with 90 wats is slower than 2080 rtx with 180 wats, Also please dont get a laptop with a max Q graphic card, its very bad, please get normal/super rtx laptop version graphic card
