- Well everyone, I'm back in the most underrated area of Japan and I'm STILL discovering more and more amazing locations to visit. This area is just filled with hidden gems! No joke, I've actually already started planning my next trip here in April ;)

Public Transport:
To get to Totsukawa Village, take the train to Kintetsu-Nara station and catch a bus from there to Totsukawa.

For Dorokyo Gorge, the bus stop is called Dorohaccho and leaves from Totsukawa Village Office. There are however, only 2 buses a day (12:08 & 16:03) going to Dorohaccho and 3 buses a day leaving from there (07:01, 13:14 & 14:25) so plan your route carefully. The bus takes 1 hour & 6 mins and costs 1,090yen.

For the onsen, get off the bus at Totsukawa Village Office.
For Hatenashi Village, catch the bus from Totsukawa Onsen to Nakahatenashi Bus Stop.
At this time Kuuchuu no Mura and Seino Waterfall is unavailable to reach by public transport.

実に美しい映像ですね。ここは神武天皇が東征のおり、熊野から入り大和に至った道中の土地で、以来免租の地として7世紀壬申の乱、南北朝時代の歴史にも絡み、明治維新の天誅組に十津川郷士が加わったという尊王の村ですね。そういった歴史的背景を知ると美しい風景にも一層の深みと趣を感じます。
関西 大阪に住んで居ます 何回も紀伊半島一周キャンプツーイングで十津川を通っていますがこんなに素敵な観光スポットが在るとは知りませんでした。今度ゆっくり巡ってみます。

熊野古道は一人旅で歩きました。一人旅だったのでゲストハウスに宿泊、国内外からのたくさんの旅行者の方達と触れ合えて夕食後に一緒に外湯に行ったり楽しかった。今度は十津川に行きたくなりました。
So many beautiful spots I would love to visit as a road trip one day with my husband. I wanted to in January 2020 and had booked one spot in Kii Katsuura for 2 nights just to see the Nachi Falls, temple, etc, but cancelled it during the planning months earlier as my daughter and I were using public transport and I saw that it was going to be a long day of travel in from Arashiyama and then out just up into Nara, and we were already doing one long day from Kanazawa to Amanohashidate. But definitely will, one day in a car.

Idk if you are interested in japanese history but I recently heard about some intersting relics they discovered at a burial site in Nara. One of the objects was a sword that was over 7ft long.

The Doro Hotel-restaurant reminds me a lot of some establishments I saw at Sandan-kyō. It seems it's a very typical Japanese type of setup.

For some reason even though I'm subscribed I haven't had videos pushed to my recommended from this channel for a very long time. I had forgotten just how much I enjoy Hannah and the way she truly seems to enjoy herself during the trips she takes and the quirky fun things like 2112 where all the words she says gets put under number 3 lol.
On the small chance Hannah or someone has been to this place reads this- How much time should one give to seeing the area without feeling rushed? Thanks to anyone that answers.
熊野古道は知っていましたがここは全くしりませんでした。こんな美しい絶景の所があるなんて。ただ交通機関が多少不便というのが惜しいです。ここが少しずつ知れるようになるとバスとかの交通機関も増えると思います。

I have travelled the Kii peninsula extensively on a public transportation (and foot) while living in Japan. It's doable...if you have a lot of time you can allocate to doing that:,)

Wow, I was just in Wakayama prefecture last year to hike the Kumano Kodo, but it looks like it would be worth a trip back to the whole area because there is so much I missed. I wonder what it's like living in this area, too. I'm so curious to learn more about rural life for locals and foreigners who've moved there.
I agree on that if something like southern Nara/Wakayama was close to Tokyo, it would be much more packed. I believe it is so quiet however, because there's also northern Kyoto, Shiga and eastern Shikoku closeby, which all offer "similar" experiences with gorges, mountains and stuff. In Tokyo on the other hand, you would always have to go westwards to be really deep inside the mountains. Anyway, this makes me wanna hike through Nara, from Sakurai to the gorgeous gorge!!!

Hey Hannah, I really like your videos about Japan. Me and my wife always wanted to go and we really like to explore by ourself. My big concern is that we have 2 kids, 9 and 5 years old. Is it a good idea to go with them? I am mostly concerned about not being able to get with them into the Onsens, since we really like water, waterfalls, hot springs and swim in them. And obviously we wouldnt really want to miss on all those great onsens. Best regards!
Hi, it will be a lot of fun for the kids! We went last summer on a camping/road trip with our 9 and 6 year old. Rented SUPs at Doro hotel, which was absolutely amazing! My 9 year old did great first time on a SUP all be herself and I had my 6 year old on a SUP with me. You can also rent kanoes.. Onsen are no problem with kids. Japanese take their kids from when they are babies. Often from age 7, girls need to go into the women’s onsen and boys into the men’s, but since you are travelling with your wife, you should be fine. We did a lot of playing in rivers. In Japan kids all wear life jackets when playing in rivers, so you will want to bring some for the kids!!! Having a car makes travelling so much easier though! You should rent one!
@@trimmtrabb8755 Hey thank you for your feedback. I really didnt expect that it would be no problem to take the kids to a Onsen. In europe Spas often are restricted to adults and often we had to sneak in our kids to a whirlpool in a hotel. It was always my impression that the Japanese are not so fond of children, expecially that they are sometimes a little more noisy and unruly as adults. Dont take it the wrong we, our kids are not rampaging around, but yeah, in Europe you do get sometimes looks if they dive through the whirlpool. Anyway, we would look at one of these tiny campers they have in Japan to travel around. We would love to have a mix of cities (Tokyo, Osaka), nature (waterfalls and onsens) and some beachlife in the south like Okinawa or some lesser visited island. 3 weeks is what we are looking at in the some, Mid of August till September.

I tend to find Japanese people are very supportive of children. So I think there’s not many worries there.
I would have to say, waterfalls and rivers can be dangerous so keep a good eye on your kids! Also watch the weather reports. If there’s heavy rain the rivers can be gushing with water 1 or 2 days after a heavy rain day!
@@KiharaChris Thank you for your feedback. Probability that we will actually go, is increasing a lot. I guess 2025 or 2026. Thanks for the advice for the rivers, I know they can be dangerous, but we have been swimming in all kind of rivers and waterfalls around Europe, Australia and the US. But locals always know what to look for. Experience beats nothing. Thanks for the hint!
Hi Hannah! I don't know if you have time to answer but do you have experience on car rental in Japan? Is it how convenient or expensive? Is driving in Japan generally a good idea for a Finn? 😅I was pondering on how to reach Totsukawa from Nara or Osaka. Thank you for your videos 💛

71-79°C is quite a cold sauna. Should be around 80-100°C, but not under 80°C.
Totsukawa area, like Tenkawa, in Nara required self-drive and not very accessible via train or bus. Thus lesser tourist or traveler visiting these area.
Is it mainly foreigners that own places around here?
No, it's definitely mostly Japanese owned places around these parts. It's super rare to find any foreigners in these areas are in general so it was very surprising to see two businesses owned by foreigners out there!

There’s a higher risk that this area will completely fade away because tourists stop visiting and the locals move away. These kinds of places are all too far away for most people who travel to Japan so I don’t think they’re at risk of becoming too popular.
