I feel that you told us to take so many things it filled up my entire suitcase and I haven’t even packed my clothes yet. This is disturbing. I have collapsible hangers something that hangs on the door for things that you put in pockets binocular you just saidto purchase one thing after the other and I did and now my entire suitcase is filled with all of the stuff and no place for clothes.
I will share a podiatrist tip with you. Especially when wearing sneakers or boots, you should alternate between two pairs. You wear one pair of sneakers today and a different pair of sneakers tomorrow. Giving your first pair of sneakers/boots 24 hours to totally dry out even if they did not get wet from water. Simply the moisture from your feet.
I just got off my first Alaska cruise 2 days ago. We had 2 sunny days (Ketchikan and Juneau) and it rained every other day. So definitely plan for rain! However, i packed too many thermals and hats (1 of each would have been sufficient). I also wish i had a pair of comfy slip on shoes that were neither my dressy flats nor my waterproof sneakers for casual ship days. I didn't bring enough short sleeve tshirts, but I bought plenty as souvenirs so that worked out nicely 😂.
We just got back from Alaska and we loved it up there! The large magnets (100 lb. with large hooks should need 12) work great for the shoe holder that you stated for the bathroom. The problem is that the door doesn't close then. If you use the magnets on the ceiling they will hold 100 lbs. the one we had had 3 holes for hooks and it worked great and it only took up a little wall space and was amazing for the small items! The clip magnets worked great for holding the papers for the days activities and port info! Binoculars are a must! With todays cell phones and the cameras they have you don't need to take your digital cameras! I got a sunrise at 3:30 am that was just stunning! Only take 1 coat that will keep you warm and light enough that it won't take up a lot of room in your suit case! Poncho is a must! And don't order the large bottles of water because even with a drink package you'll pay $5 a bottle. Now it's time to go to Australia for a 26 day cruise!
We just completed an Alaska cruise, too. The biggest way we cut back on volume was by buying HAL's unlimited laundry package. We had about three days traveling and visiting Vancouver before embarkation day, plus another four days after the cruise in Denali and Anchorage. With the laundry package, we could do all the pre-cruise laundry right away and also have all fresh clothing at the end of the cruise to cover our land portion. My favorite clothing was all comfy -- hoodies, t-shirts, leggings, joggers, a light vest, a fleece jacket. A light-weight raincoat that I could wear over the fleece or hoodies came in handy a lot -- mostly as a windbreaker, but also for the one torrential rain period we experienced when disembarking in Whittier. I wore my sneakers most of the time, but was glad to have the waterproof hiking shoes for some small hikes and when dog-sledding on a glacier (even though the company also gives you special waterproof boots that completely cover your own shoes).
@@kaw9577 HAL, meaning Holland America. They offer an unlimited laundry package that you can buy in advance or on the ship. When adding it ahead of time through their website, it was $60 per stateroom for completely unlimited wash/fold/press.
@@smleclercbrilliant! i can pack for any trip in a carryon and this would certainly make it easier. there are also ships with laundry rooms for guest use. 👍🏻
To anyone who is concerned about turning over their laundry to HAL staff for laundry, don't be concerned. I received all my clothing back and was the BEST folding job that I have ever seen in 30+ years of sending laundry out. I would like the person who did that job because it was fantastic.
Helpful video. Going on an Alaska cruise next week! Just wanted to share a tip I learned last year attending a Broncos game in Denver. It snowed 6 inches the morning of the game and was really cold. I didn't pack any thermal underwear, but I did have flannel pj bottoms. So I wore those under my jeans and my legs didn't get cold during game.
There is a difference in the Alaskan cruises when you go early in the season as opposed to later in the season. Early is still quite chilly and more snow peaks. We went in September 2022 and it was warmer and the scenery more green and lush. 70’s warm. It was sunny but we were told it is usually more rainy. Still need the hat and light quilted jacket for glacier days. The closer you get to the glacier the chillier it gets. Layers is key. The hikers are an excellent suggestion.
We really found your packing advice to be very helpful. We were very lucky. We do not have much of the rainwear and heavy jackets for Alaska as we live in Southern Arizona. my wife went to the local Goodwill store and found TWO Silverseas excursion 3 in 1 jackets that are used on Antarctic cruise expeditions.
@@LifeWellCruised Well, we are back and had an incredible time. Beautiful weather! Having shorts was a bonus. Can I make a suggestion? Sunscreen! It doesn't take long to get burned. Otherwise, it was great. Thank you so much!

My cruise was at the beginning of August and I packed things like you did for your May/June trip and found that I didn’t need sweaters or coats as it was mostly in the high 70s and sunny! LOL! Hope you enjoyed the amazing scenery! Looking forward to your next video!

I am going to Alaska in July with my service dog. It is not a cruise and it is for 10 days. I will only be bringing a carry on. We are currently on our Alaska cruise but on the ship that just hit the pier in San Francisco. We were supposed to leave the dock yesterday at 4pm but we are still at the dock waiting to see if it is safe to go. It is Friday morning at 7am. So far, the crew has been holding it together. I am sure they are stressed.
How was it? Our 2-week Alaskan cruise is in 3 weeks. We live an hour from San Francisco but we booked from Vancouver because we got a really good deal on it. We got worried about our princess Cruise when we saw what happened to yours. Did they take care of you guys in the time you had to wait for them to do the repair? We saw a brief news clip that made it look like people were staying in a luxury hotel while waiting for the cruise ship to be repaired.
@@booshki I hope your cruise is wonderful!!! I have to say Princess did take care of us. It felt like one of those things in life. Where it felt like it was out of a lot of people's control and you just had to role with it. In the end, I didn't get my Alaska cruise but I did feel like Princess did above and beyond to make up for that. That said, we were on the ship the whole time, there was no luxury hotel. That said, it was totally fine. I already have booked my future cruise with them next summer, which is totally paid for from cruise credits. May your Alaska cruise be great. P.S. the formal nights were super formal, people were dressed up.
Have you checked out convertible pants? One of the things that surprised me on my Alaska cruise (5/26-6/2) was how warm it was on the ship (Ovation of the seas). Being able to zip off the legs came in handy.
Good point! It was way warmer inside the cruise ship than I anticipated. I normally feel cold indoors where most people feel comfortable, but even I was too warm in many places. For example, the Lido buffet dining area on HAL was extremely warm and I was hot in a t-shirt.
This might be niche, but I'm an amateur photographer. I rented a long lens for our AK cruise and was so glad I did. I got amazing pics on a whale watching excursion! 🤩
This video is super helpful! We leave for our Alaskan cruise July 4th, and I have been trying to narrow down what we should pack. Have you (or anyone reading this) tried compressing bulky clothing in vacuum seal bags?
Ilana, thanks for the tips. We are taking our first Alaskan Cruise in August and we are so excited. Your tips are so helpful, thanks for all the great information.
@@renee498 let us know how it went and how you liked it. Husband and I are taking an Alaska cruise the last week of September and looking forward to it.
@@catalinaholland815 Yesterday was disembarkation day! It was a great trip, so much to see and do. It is a great time to see whales and dolphins. The bald eagles were beautiful. We sailed the Norwegian Bliss for 7 days 8/26 to 9/2 and now spending a few extras days in Seattle to rest and recover. My suggestion if you are an adrenaline junky (which I am not), do the Zip Rider at Icy Strait Point if it is in your budget. I did it, it was rainy and quite the thrill ride. All in all I loved the cruise and would definitely do it again in the future (I need more than 7 days for my next visit). I hope you enjoy your cruise as much as I did. I love nature and it is such a beautiful place to visit.
I thought the Level8 luggage looked very interesting - until I saw the delivery charges! US$150 for purchase under $200, US$250 for purchases under $300, and up to US$500 for more expensive items. If Level8 are ever wondering why they don’t sell much luggage to us constantly-travelling Australians, it’s because any of us who can afford to spend that kind of money for a bag will go for a premium brand, while the rest of us will stick to the affordable name brands we can buy locally.
I’m not sure about the delivery outside of the North America, which I believe is often free. I’m sure it’s frustrating that some items that are sold in the US are pricey to ship to Australia
Great video Ilana . A lot of sponsored vids get very cheesy and feel “fakeish” when drooling over the product. We’ve seen you multiple times with the Level 8 luggage, and you do an awesome job displaying/demonstrating it in a very REAL, believable manner. Level 8 would do well to “incorporate” you MORE as a spokeswoman !
Thanks for video - very helpful for my Alaska cruise in October. @all: So, I would need waterproof shoes only for my cruise (I live in South Pacific). Therefore I looked for an alternative solution and got it = waterproof and anti-slippery shoe covers. You find them from brands online or at sport shops in many colours. For example: I have found the perfect covers (orange on top / black on bottom) in proshop at my golfclub. Important: Covers should be made of 100% waterproof silicone. Hope, this advice is useful. Greetings from Moorea 🌴🏖😎🇵🇫🇫🇷🇪🇺
‘A hat’ what’s that? I’m 🇨🇦 it’s a toque 😂. Also, fleece is too bulky and absorbs water. A good alternative is wool, cashmere, silk or a combo of those. A 2pc set of silk long underwear is super thin and can be worn under anything eliminating all the bulky stuff.
We will be taking an Alaska cruise in 2024 on Holland America. The same ship you were in. My husband, myself and my adult daughter will be sharing a cabin. Not sure if we should just get a balcony room or upgrade to a suite. Just to add we have camped together for years, so sharing a small space is fine. However this is a once in a lifetime and maybe worth the splurge of a suite. Thanks
We have sailed mostly on NCL. I hate dressing up so freestyle dining works for me/us. My question is on packing; my wife likes the roll-up method, to me who packs t-shirts, underwear, a pair of jeans and a pair of shorts and maybe 1 or 2 polo shirts. To me flat packing with minimal folds "seems" to be more space efficient. Any thoughts either way? BTW: you do have a lot of helpful hints on your channel - THANKS! I did like your mention of Level 8 stuff, I'm going to look into them a bit more.
I’ve loved watching your hints on packing for Alaska cruises. But one question is you don’t mentioned anything about hangers after you arrive for you hangup clothes.
Another great video - love Alaska. We are heading out for our 4th cruise this week. We do manage packing this in carry on but I am a very plain dresser. We no longer bring puffer jackets, instead a rain jacket is our top layer over fleece sweatshirts (1 each). Also we bring water resistant hiking pants rather than jeans because wet jeans are difficult to dry. All my bottoms are black and my tees can be rinsed in the shower and will dry overnight so my wardrobe is simple. Please remember to pack and wear sunscreen as even there you can get sunburned on beautiful days.
@@lindaguida4074 I am spoiled an admit it. We are retired and live in a very hot climate so August in Alaska is our favorite anniversary/birthday get away.
As much as I hear and see beautiful pictures and scenery I just can’t do an Alaska cruise! I’m from Chicago and I can’t stand cold weather and all that packing I don’t own a coat as I moved to South Texas 17 yrs ago. Maybe when we are older it will appeal to me.
Interesting. I am from Alberta and have been in South Texas for 13 years. My 2 sisters are in New Brunswick Canada. You would thimk they would come see me and enjoy warm weather. Nope we are meeting in Vancouver next weekend fof an Alaskan cruise. I had to purchase alot of long sleeved shirts and fleece as I have no use for them here.
Thank you for the demo of packing a checked bag. Did you take a carry on as well? I like having vital things with me on the plane in case my bag doesn't make it.
This was informative, thank you. We are on an October Alaskan cruise so layering has been on my mind. Leggings are great to use rather than thermals. I used to work in a ski resort and even the guys wore pantyhose under their ski wear. I bought some compression bags for our bulky items. I havent tried them yet but I hope they work out.
Thanks Illana, great advice & packing tips. You look lovely in all your outfits. In regards to binoculars....is there a particular brand you'd recommend? Thanks ❤
Thanks! I bought lightweight travel binoculars & they work well enough. I didn’t want to bring a very heavy & large pair, but they might get you closer :). Just purchased on Amazon / I have the link in the description:)
Great tips. I am going on an Alaskan cruise in 1 month and this is very helpful for me. What would you say are the essentials to pack in your carry on?
Thank you so much for this video! We leave end of July and I swear I’ve read all of the blog posts but seeing it is very helpful! I do have one question though. Under your fleece jackets did you just wear short sleeve tshirts or long sleeves?
We are going on a 10 day Alaska cruise. My husband thinks 2 carry on will be enough for our clothes. I think we may need a check on bag too. I am concerned I won't have enough clothes or be able to bring ex things back but I am worried what if are check on bag gets Lost.
Thank you. Do you mind my asking what jeep excursion you did and at which port? I haven't seen that on the list with Holland America. I feel like my Keen hiking boots need to go because if it does rain I would regret not. They will take up a lot of room unfortunately.
I am planning to come to Alaska next may. It is hard with bulky clothes. I am not going on a cruise but will be between talkeetna and seward. At first i wanted to go carry on ony but i am not sure i can manage. I thought id buy a suitcase set and see before i go what size luggage i need. 😂
Thank you. I have everything ready to pack for next month's cruise to Alaska , one question and comment. Do I need to bring a wrap or are the ships kept pretty temperate in the indoor areas I.e. Eating areas and restaurants? I found, sometimes, packing the packing cubes upright vs flat can save a bit of space as well.
What are your actual white running shoes? What brand/kind are the fleece lined leggings? What Columbia jacket is yours ( I know its not the one linked) and I cant find that actual one bc it's so cute!! Thank you
Did you say Dyson, as in the hair dryer? I have one that I love but it is extremely bulky so just wondering if you have a travel dryer or the Dyson. Looked like it was in a bag or packing cube.

thank you, ilana, for all your great content! it’s very helpful. we may have different philosophies when it comes to packing (i’m carryon only with a personal item), but i appreciate your experience, ideas and expertise.

Good idea!
Good point! It was way warmer inside the cruise ship than I anticipated. I normally feel cold indoors where most people feel comfortable, but even I was too warm in many places. For example, the Lido buffet dining area on HAL was extremely warm and I was hot in a t-shirt.
Great video. Do you have links to specific clothing and outerwear items that you showed? Loved the dresses, and curious about other items as well.
We heading to Alaska 13 day Precruise tour in 4 days. 6 days Northern Alaska then 7 days southward to Vancouver. I’m very excited 🎊 🎉
Very exciting!! Is it bad I’m a teeny bit jealous 😉😂
This might be niche, but I'm an amateur photographer. I rented a long lens for our AK cruise and was so glad I did. I got amazing pics on a whale watching excursion! 🤩
I definitely would bring one if you’re into photography! Great idea
This video is super helpful! We leave for our Alaskan cruise July 4th, and I have been trying to narrow down what we should pack. Have you (or anyone reading this) tried compressing bulky clothing in vacuum seal bags?
Love your videos! We are heading to Alaska in October so your packing tips helped! God bless you!
We just booked our Alaska cruise.
Ilana, thanks for the tips. We are taking our first Alaskan Cruise in August and we are so excited. Your tips are so helpful, thanks for all the great information.
Have an amazing cruise!!
me too!!! august 28-september 5
@@evelynbell2459 my trip is 8/26 - 9/2.
It would be nice to know WHEN you traveled to Alaska. Great video!
Next may I’m doing 4 cruises back to back on four ships 56 nights including Japan Alaska 20 nights
Thanks so much! Lol, I just used the carry on piece for our 3 day road trip to Quebec City. I really appreciate your comments :)
First cruise... Retiring 2 weeks before the cruise.
Congratulations!!
I just got my Level 8 suitcase today because I saw it here. It doesn't feel very strong but hope it holds up.
I'm missing something. Why, on a seven-day cruise, would you need more than one fleece jacket? And what month did you cruise?
‘A hat’ what’s that? I’m 🇨🇦 it’s a toque 😂.
Also, fleece is too bulky and absorbs water. A good alternative is wool, cashmere, silk or a combo of those. A 2pc set of silk long underwear is super thin and can be worn under anything eliminating all the bulky stuff.
Overpacked a lot for Alaska this time. We're going again next August - won't make that mistake again.
I think it happens to the best of us 😂
We will be taking an Alaska cruise in 2024 on Holland America. Thanks
If you can do it you won’t regret it. Another option is an inside cabin across the hall from the balcony cabin
What binoculars would you recommend for watching whales? Thanks in advance for your help. 😊
Does your Ultimate cruise planner cover alaskan cruise differences also?
We’re leaving for our Alaska cruise this week!!! So excited!
I’ve loved watching your hints on packing for Alaska cruises. But one question is you don’t mentioned anything about hangers after you arrive for you hangup clothes.
I used the hangers supplied by the cruise line
Another great video - love Alaska. We are heading out for our 4th cruise this week. We do manage packing this in carry on but I am a very plain dresser. We no longer bring puffer jackets, instead a rain jacket is our top layer over fleece sweatshirts (1 each). Also we bring water resistant hiking pants rather than jeans because wet jeans are difficult to dry. All my bottoms are black and my tees can be rinsed in the shower and will dry overnight so my wardrobe is simple. Please remember to pack and wear sunscreen as even there you can get sunburned on beautiful days.
4th Alaska cruise??
@@lindaguida4074 I am spoiled an admit it. We are retired and live in a very hot climate so August in Alaska is our favorite anniversary/birthday get away.
Hi Illana,
You are great. Thank you for all the great invaluable information.
THIS is the video I've been waiting for! Thank you so much!
Yay!! I’m so glad
I can understand… it definitely has an appeal though
@@trudykellylinscomb1384 enjoy your cruise and your time with your sisters! 💙
Thank you for the demo of packing a checked bag. Did you take a carry on as well? I like having vital things with me on the plane in case my bag doesn't make it.
Thank you for all the packing tips and links! Very helpful!😊
Leaving for our first Alaskan cruise July 9-19
Such great tips and processes! Show and tell is fabulous! Thanks so much.
Thanks Suzette!! I think I may pack carry on only for my next cruise 😂 (think I can do it?)
Thank you for your tips, we are cruising Alaska, at the end of July
Very exciting!!!
How funny, our family is too. Holland America
I'm going in October too, on the Bliss!
Very smart! I think compression or vacuum style cubes would definitely be good for the sweaters
@@mecmaneen which week? We're going on the 14th
You could add Norway fjords, Iceland, etc. to this post.
I'm on an Alaskan Cruise right now. I did pretty well packing.
That’s awesome!! Enjoy
Yes...we take off on July 29th, and will be ready!!!
Woohoo!! Enjoy
Enjoyed the little details, helped me visualize for myself how I could pack, thanks!
Nice luggage set! I'm looking forward to our Alaska cruise later this summer. Great tips!
Thank you so much for this video! We leave end of July and I swear I’ve read all of the blog posts but seeing it is very helpful! I do have one question though. Under your fleece jackets did you just wear short sleeve tshirts or long sleeves?
It depended on the day. Glacier bay was long sleeve 😂
We are going on a 10 day Alaska cruise. My husband thinks 2 carry on will be enough for our clothes. I think we may need a check on bag too. I am concerned I won't have enough clothes or be able to bring ex things back but I am worried what if are check on bag gets Lost.
Apple AirTag in each checked bag, carry-ones, purse-They are great!
Very informative. I am mad about packing cubes but don’t roll dresses. Going to rethink that though now.
Glad you enjoyed it! Rolling just works for me, but there’s no one way :)
Enjoying all the great video's 👍. Really comes on handy to see exactly how it can be done
😊 TY
I love the lighting in this video!!!!
Thanks - it’s actually just sunlight. Nature is the best
Thank you. Do you mind my asking what jeep excursion you did and at which port? I haven't seen that on the list with Holland America. I feel like my Keen hiking boots need to go because if it does rain I would regret not. They will take up a lot of room unfortunately.

Thanks 🙏 Always enjoy your content & videos. You make everything so easy to understand.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for your kind words:)
We have watched so many of your videos and love all of them! Thanks for all of the tips! Do you have a link for the cream colored crochet cardigan?
I didn’t bring a wrap, since I had 2 light open sweaters/cardigans. Otherwise I would. It wasn’t very cool though
Was wondering? For my upcoming Alaska cruise. Since it is more casual. Are formal nights less formal than my Caribbean cruise as far as dress?
You can bring hairdryer? I thought they have it in the cabin and forbid people to bring their own?
Wow, you kept it simple. I like that. Probably won't be going till 2025, but will keep this in mind. Great video
Alaska is definitely simple. I would add rain pants if you expect a lot of rain
I’m curious about the Dyson as well….seems very compact.
