When cross examining a witness that Murdaugh had stolen from, Murdaugh's attorney pointed out that the payout that the victim had been awarded when he sued Murdaugh for the theft, was vastly more than the original amount stolen, so "it worked out better for you, in the end, didn't it?" Even leaving out that the money stolen was life-insurance due to the death of his mother, that's a despicable suggestion, but it's how every abuser who has settled a case for a payout thinks.
