- This is my way of running in ear monitors for drummers simply and affordably. Like anything else, there are many ways to do things. This is my way. None of the companies in this video paid me to endorse their products. These are products I like and trust. However, there is a list of a few companies I do endorse at the end. I used a monitor speaker before this set up, but now I isolate the instruments and vocals that i want and cut our the back round noise. Once again Thank you. I am free to play drums the way i want too.

nice vid! Just a quick addition if I might... being an engineer, please always (especially if there is no rider, or it's changed) talk to us about bringing your own ears rig, again especially if you're unplugging stuff at the venue. That's why I like using unpowered wedges. nobody is gunna try and plug an NL4 cable into their little ears mixer. If I know guys are wanting to run ears, I'll always run an extra send back to the drum riser.
Basically, at the end of the day, talk to the engineer, and work with them, not against them.

Obviously any half brained musician will talk to the house engineer before hand. Rant not really necessary.
I've dealt with plenty of musicians who haven't given me the common courtesy...

Thank you!!! I want to run IEM's but my drums are not mic'd. This will allow me to use ambient mics on the kit that I can hear without it going out to the house because we don't play gigs that require the drums to be mic'd up. Perfect solution giving me control!

This was helpful. Something Im looking into as a drummer. We played a venue last week that had no monitor for at the drum riser. It was a catastrophe. I couldn't hear anyone. No guitar, no bass, could barely hear vocals. Never want to end up in that situation again. Lol.

you kept talkin bad about bar managers and bartenders running sound lol. I did both, but was doing sound, and did sound rec tech long before getting into the bar scene, I just happened to be good at the bar business too and ended up running a venue. i have since left the place to be a sales rep for the local beer dist, but I still do all the sound/setup at the bar. they (current help) wont even go vacuum or pickup cans off the stage stating that I dont want them on my stage. they read minds well! Thanks for the video, I was hear researching cheap inears for our band.

I use the EAD10 for micing my drums. I line to the main board 1 line in from the main. All using the Zoom Livetrack L8 and Se215s.

hey sparky, this is a great set up and i have model my setup to follow your guide. but there's a small problem i run into, what do i do when the monitor feed runs through a speakon cable, instead of a xlr?

I'm looking for a good set up and have been watching a few videos. You've really taken a lot of time to figure it all out. It's not easy as I have found. The music/recording/live performance world takes a while to understand in terms of equipment knowledge, learning how things work together, and why they don't is sometimes the biggest challenge. Sometimes I feel like I need an electrical engineering degree and then I realize... a lot in the business do!!
I hate the nights sitting here with these electronics trying to get them to work only to find out it's not supported or your particular set-up doesn't allow you to do what you wanted. I research as much as possible but it's still hard and I have bought some things that have turned into heavy paper-weights as a result.
Do you experience any hiss or power loss over these longer connections/multi adapters?? Someone told me to get a good surge protector with Sine wave regulation. Is this recommended, especially with so much going on??

Wanted to ask....When I have 3 singers and I'm trying to go wireless for them, do I use one aux send to the box and am I able to still use the the PM16 for individual monitoring?

very interesting. My band runs 4 psm 200 wireless IEM's and use an audio interface with ableton. All in a simple rack system and only requires 3 things to be plugged in.
+Kyler Schmor That's a pretty good set up! Most of the regional bands I worked with all had their own self contained in ear rigs and it was nice. Whenever I do one of fill in gigs with bands that don't have ears, I run this set up so I know at least I will have a great monitor mix. lol
Your digital board for your self contained set up what board is that? I think i have the 4 channel version just wanted to be sure
do you have a video that is more detailed and with shots of the gear, road case and other stuff? I am trying to build a self contained IEM rig custom for a band that needs clear drum mixes. How is the FOH getting the sound exactly. What input/output is the snake going from the monitor mixer to FOH mixer?
Can I unplug the XLR out the back of the wedge and plug it straight into channel 1 (BTW my channel 1 is a XLR female)

Im a drummer using in ear monitors at church. It seems i can turn up all other instruments but the drums I cant. Im told they have the “room” sound going back to monitor. So the main board controls volume which I believe is the readon I cant get alot of volume from the drums in my monitor

Which Mackie mixer are you using at the beginning of the video, please? Am switching to in-ears and going to go through a mixer as you have shown us.
That was the Mackie DL 1608. It's great little iPad mixer for the money but now I use the Behringer X18 Air as you can USB out into a laptop and multitrack record from it.
Can you make a video explaining how to do this with three in ear monitor sets through the single mixing board? Like this set up, but adding two other in ear monitors?
xPBKM4x you just need a board with enough aux sends. So aux 1 would be singer, 2 guitar player, 3 drummer, etc. lines in are all the same. Run each aux to each individual transmitter.

Quick question: in the first rig, do we still need to use an adaptor in order to plug it into the mixing board, even if that board has XLR inputs?
Or the reason why you did it was because it should be used in a special kind of input/insert that only takes 1/4" leads?
No, if the board has XLR outs, then just run straight from those! Most higher end boards have XLR outs but the smaller or cheaper ones usually have 1/4" outs.

excellent video! wondering if I can ask some dumb newby questions? trying to run exactly what you're showing in the first part of the video but running into some odd issues. have a Yorkville Powermax 22 (powered board) which I'm running the monitor line (would normally go to a passive monitor speaker) into a little Alesis Multimix 4. On the Alesis, running click track in channel 1 which works fine. In channel 2 I plug my monitor feed from the board and where the issues start. I'll set a gain level for the mic on the Yorkville, have the monitor level at zero on the channel strip and still get volume in my ears when I turn volume up on the Alesis. Does that make sense to you? Basically, doesn't seem to matter how I set the monitor mix on the Yorkville, I'll just get everything in the Alesis.
+Marc Lemery So you are running a powered monitor feed into the Alesis? You aren't going to want to run a powered feed. I'm not familiar with Yorkville boards, but some boards will give you the option for powered or non powered sends. I'm thinking the power is the issue. See if there is a non powered send (monitor, main, or control room/phones) and see how that sounds. Again, I may be reading your issue wrong. I am not a big fan of powered boards at all. Too much can go wrong. Hope you figure it out!

Thanks bro for this video. I just came back from NAMM and this definitely helps with in ear solution. I would love to take ownership and control of my own sound. What would you recommend for flight traveling where the budget doesn't allow such a large rig?

As far as a traveling rig, the Behringer X18 is a killer little board that could definitely fit in a carry on along with an in ear transmitter/receiver. Traveling mainly depends on what you have to work with when you land. Will all the venues have digital consoles? If so, then I'd just bring ears and download all the apps ahead of time. If not, try to get as much of what you need in a good padded carry on bag.

If you are going to be using venue consoles, the most common are the Behringer X32 and Presonus (Qmix). Hopefully they let you on their wifi network so you can control your own mix.
Hello Sparky's Video Productions and thank you for the video, is very enlightening :) I still have a doubt though, can you run the line from the front mixer directly to one of the inputs (XLR or 1/4" mono jack) of the console? Or do you run it through a specific input? For example, can i run the line from the front mixer to the Nº1 input in my console (XLR), and then run my click though some other input, like if they were instruments? I use the Behringer Xenyx QX1202 USB. Thanx mate, all the best!
Yes, you can run any line into any channel. XLR is a preferred input as you have gain control. I would run my 1/4" inputs (keys, tracks, etc) into DI boxes, then run that into my board using an XLR. The click would run 1/4" into the board.

+Andy Jones Absolutely! Just run the Roland into the main console like any other instrument and then send it where needed (front of house, wedges, ears, etc). If you are using it for click also, are you running tracks out left and click out right (or vice versa)? In that case, you could split it and run two tracks on your main board (one L and one R) giving you control of your tracks and click separately.
Where does the snare and high mix go? Do you have the pa control that since your only hooking up your kick and cymbals
I run the cymbals and kick independently for control. The rest of the kit is in the aux mix from the main console. Now I run a split snake and run everything into my own 16 ch board. I use the Mackie DL1608.
Question: At 4:18, instead of using the adaptor, can you not plug the XLR cable that carries the monitor mix into one of the first 4 channels?
Yes you can! I just free up those 4 XLR's for insturments.
Great video. I have a simple question. I would like to put sound on my drums for practice. I have 3 toms, kick, snare, hihat,, 2 x crash, ride and china. What kind of mix board do I need for less money, and what brand of mics you recommended? Set of 5 or 7 mics? Do I need mix board with XLR connections for each mics? What about this board ( BEHRINGER XENYX 1002B). Thanks
Lord Calad honestly, for practice I would mic your kick and snare then run an over head or two. So a 4 to 6 channel board will do.
im looking to upgrade my Wireless Personal Monitor system. you have the PSM 200 and EW 300, which has the best bass response? my current unit Galaxy Audio as1100 is thin and bass and kick drums get cut off. I use remolded UE TripleFi10s with 3 drivers per ear. wired it sounds amazing. i did a sound exam on my channel but definitely would love ur opinion of the shure vs Sennheiser
The Sennheisers are by far way better. The Shure set I have now have been discontinued anyways. They are my back up set. Another think to look at is the Porter and Davies butt kicker.

I am deciding between the ew 300 (25hz bottom end) and psm 300 (38hz bottom end) my current system galaxy audio as 1100 (70hz) doesn't have the bass I want. Could you do a sound comparison video like mine? Just trying to get an idea of the sound. Thanks for this video you did a great job!
The Sennheisers sounds amazing. It's more about your ear buds than anything else. I'm not a very picky guy when it comes to low end and I use Ultimate Ears triple driver custom molds.

You need a split snake sending 2 equal feeds to 2 different mixers (your/bands ear mix and front of house)

@@lostenampazdelnorte Yes, if you want to run your mixer as a front of house then you can run your stereo main outs into their mixer channels 1 and 2 and let them control it from there.

+Bart Pak Most powered wedges have a non powered output for daisy chaining powered speakers. Other wedges that have a line coming from a power amp will have a line out that will take that powered signal out, meaning that will blow stuff up. The phantom power on a mixer is for condensor mics and has nothing to do with other things plugged into the mixer. Now, most digital consoles have phantom power switches individually for each channel. So just be sure if you line out of a wedge, it has a nonpowered out.
Would the radial pro D2 DI box work for in ears? I'm mainly planning on using them for back tracks and a click
You definitely want a headphone amp or small board everything feeds into then run your ears from that.

Usman Pranoto I'm referring to the monitor mix. It goes into an input. A bus is a send or output. I think this is what you were asking.

Do you split your drum mics when your in the middle of a line up? How would you facilitate that?
Middle meaning band 2 of 3 on a bill? The unfortunate thing is when you are sandwiched between other bands and you have a "throw and go" type situation, you may not have the luxury of running splits and your own mixes. In those cases, I still run the monitor feed into my console as I also run my click into it, but as far as the mix goes, I'm at the mercy of the sound guy.
My question is what if there is no snake or not enough channels to plug the rest of your drums into? Would you need a bigger mixer? THX Sparky, Great video!
Your best bet is to have everything you need on you. You can't rely on venues. Y cables are a cheap quick fix for splitting a few channels but a split snake would be ideal. When on big shows, I generally split everything on stage and even sometimes a few ambient mics facing the crowd. On those shows, my 5 piece kit runs 12 channels.
Is the feed from the monitor to your desk passive or active?. Eg..line in or line out ( daisy chain).
Everything is passive. Power for any speakers would come from a power amp or powered speaker. You never want to run anything powered into a mixer.

Good vid! One question.....If the house PA uses non powered monitors, can you still grab the floor wedge monitor cable coming from the monitor amps and run it in to a DI box, and then from the DI box output to your in-ear monitor amp?
Andy Bishir Noooo!!!! Definitely grab your feed from the snake on stage. A DI box will not protect against the power. Power should never be ran through a snake so that is assuming their power amps are post snake. And always let the house guy know what you wanna do with patching into his system.
Got it. I'm just trying to make it as easy as I can and be able to use whatever monitor signal the venue uses. The Behringer Ultra DI DI100 di box can accept up to 3000 watts of speaker power and I didn't know if something like that would be able to step down the powered input and give me a line level (non powered) input that I could plug in to my in-ear monitor amp. Can you elaborate on "I split my cymbals?" Do you mean you have a male Y plug going into the drum mics such that then one xlr plugs into the one Y and goes to the snake, while another XLR goes into the other Y plug and goes to your mixer?
I have a split snake and run my cymbals into my monitor mix just like every other instrument. Most small clubs don't run overheads but I do. That way I don't kill my band by crushing my cymbals.

+DDannyT94 A split snake. It's a snake with 2 parallel outs. Seismic Audio has some affordable ones however they are not isolated. So you can get some noise. I have 2 and have never had any major issues. Just make sure only one board is running phantom power.

Alright so we are using non-powered speakers, I would get my feed straight from the MAIN BOARD? If so where would I plug my cable in to receive the feed?
Cris Rodriguez get your feed from whichever board controls the monitor mix. Most bigger venues have a front of house board and a monitor board (side stage). Once you have your board, it's best to just plug into your mixes send (aux 4, bus 4, etc) and run that to where it needs to go. Powered speakers you can just unplug and use that cable, but with passive speakers, you need to get you feed before the power amp. And always always consult the clubs sound engineer before you start unplugging things.
my mixer is a xenyx 2222usb wht I am saying is only when I pfl then it work but no volume frm d fader but frm d phones/ctrl room knob
RENNIE CHARLES the headphone/control room out is mainly only used to monitor selected (pfl'd) channels. Sound engineers use it to check eq's/levels in their headphones during shows. You want to run out of an aux mix into a headphone amp if you are running ears hardwired.

"Y" cables will work but are not the best/recommended method. Mics can "fight" for gain and you aren't getting 2 truly balanced signals. A balanced split snake or rack mount split is the best way to get 2 truly equal signals.

Yes, you run monitor feed in 1 channel and click into another channel. And any other sources into it.
I have a 3.5 extender but the quality isn’t as good, do you know why?
Cables can be shielded or not, balanced or unbalanced, and of differing thicknesses (Gauge). Any one of those things and/or more could be the problem. Look to spend more than you expected to get a decent one.
Are those the in ears you actually are using or? Just wondering cause someone was trying to tell me you need a dual or triple driver in ears to play live really
Honestly, dual and triple drivers do help a lot. These buds in this video are my Shure's I believe. They were $99 and my back up pair but still sound great. My main ears are custom molded Ultimate Ear UE11's if I remember correctly. Molded buds help out a lot with killing ambient sound.
It also depends on what you need, I used to have my click on headphones but they made me sweat like a mofo so I changed to earphones, next step is good in ears and a mixer.
feel I may sound stupid here. But just for people who are on the shoe string budget. If at a starting point a drummer is okay with just working with the mix that the engineer provides do you need a mixing board? Can you run ears from a "Rolls pm50s" by plugging straight from the house monitor into the rolls pm50s to the headphones?
Dramatic Drums absolutely and most do. I use my own board as going from club to club you never know what you'll get. Also, this saves tons of soundcheck time since everything is already dialed in. Takes a big headache out of the game.
cant just use the rolls box? It has no mix just exactly what the engineer sends to monitor. It only has a volume for the mix thats sent. This still good for drummers on the cheap?
If the engineer has a mix for you, then yes, just run it into a headphone amp of some sorts.

Any input you like depending on where you want it on your mixer. I usually took the first input with no XLR input.
