Good to see you back in action Jim. Sundon pits is a great place to explore. Have lived in the village for a while and love spending time there exploring all the old lime works remnants. Hopefully bump into you there sometime. Happy New Year!
I got great memories of the pits back in the 90s ,used to go ferreting there most Sundays ,it was crawling with rabbits.not many places left like that now ,Houghton pit was just the same until some conservation group took over and sterilised the place.i know a very irresponsible individual who released a Wels catfish into the lake back around 95.if its still alive would be a monster!cheers Jim.
Cheers Thomas, yes I remember when houghton pit was also a free for all. In the 80s I used to turn up with a can of petrol and a 6 volt battery and I could always find a working moped to enjoy for a few hours!
@@jim.m75 when these places were wild, full of burnt out cars and rubbish everywhere the wildlife flourished.when people come along to manage them they go downhill.happy new year
Hi mate . I sent you them maps. That part of the pits is the oldest part. That part you mentioned is the original lime works you can still make out the old cart tracks and banks (narrow Gage railway) leading up to the bee hive kilns (I got a hand drawn photo done before the war). If you need any info let me know. Ps I still got your torch that I found up there lol
Ah it was you, cheers Sean that will help me in searching my emails! I know where the old narrow gauge tracks were, seems like the oldest part of the quarry as the trees there are much bigger. There is a huge hollow and lots of old brickwork at the end of those tracks, is that roughly where the beehive kilns were?
@jim.m75 if you email me I will reply with some photos. I got tons of info on sundon hills. Not a well know sit but you have harlington lime kilns (carner hill) I got loads of info on that. You can sill see the foundations it's was all destroyed in ww2 as it was a firing range.
great video jim we loved it getting loads of inspiration for our upcoming wild camping videos got a sub off us! will be looking out for more of your videos
Great video Jim, ill be honest thst homemade mic guard did massively help though, youd have had no audio without thst id expect. Nice to see you there again, dont seem like 2 years. I have some cured sticks ready to go, might sort tgem out doon.
Nice one Mike make some sticks! I've got a pressie for you, I've ended up with two OS maps for your area so I'll send you one in the post. Good for your bug out bag and it's the type that shows springs ect so very useful!
Thanks for watching Chad, it was actually a chalk quarry used for producing lime for the cement industry. There is lots of limestone in the North of England but here in the south it is chalk for as far as the eye can see!
Nice to see you out and about again, hope your back get's better soon. 🙂 It's a pity that the Quarry Squatters left a mess. If they left things tidy when they left, I don't think people would have much problem with them. But few of these idiots ever do, and it annoys the locals. So they end up having the Plod paying them a visit and moving them on. Oh well, stupid is as stupid does as the saying goes.
Cheers zed! Actually as it turns out it's not a homeless camp, the bloke who built it has left a comment and says he is about to clear it all up! Just a fun hang out by the looks of it.
Nice explore. Thanks 👍 🙂
Cheers for watching!
