    He was simply a genius at 22. Unbelievable,! Buddy like so many in that area was exposed to everything in music. Draw a circle around that area and you’ll see the people that invented a lot of stuff. The music was invented by our black People, blues, jazz, and rock. But our white kids like Elvis and Buddy,’added their way to it and took it to the world. Our black People couldn’t even go to half of the places.

    In his book, Bobby Keys wrote about how Buddy Holly & the Crickets used to rehearse not far from where he lived in Lubbock, TX. He said he tried to get them to let him watch and they said no, so Bobby offered to buy food for them. When he delivered, they let him stay and watch. Years later, he told Keith Richards about how similar he was to Buddy (guitar player, driven to succeed, ...), Keith was shocked that the sax player knew his idol.

      *EVERY performer in show-business was 'ripped-off' since Rome itself was an 'Empire'...nothing new in that*
      *Pop performers and bands got it the worst, especially if they were not White*
      *Even the Beatles are still missing millions owed from merchandising and records
      pressed by every company in America that never paid proper 'Royalties' to them*
      *Chuck Berry insisted on being paid in-cash before he went on-stage, since he never got more than a fraction of money owed on record sales or songwriting royalties, yet still had to pay taxes on the full amounts of money he never had*
      (Speaking of 'Beatles', Paul/Ringo are *STILL* waiting for the money they were supposed to be paid for the concert in Manilla, all of which was 'seized' at the airport before the plane was allowed to take-off...Lennon was asked by 'Rolling Stone' years later "What happened there?" and he said "We were paid, and then they took it back in paper-sacks because we refused to play at the Presidential
      Palace for some party or something on our day off to play 'Tourist'...George said
      "That's it! That's it, no more of this shite for me" while we were looking out the plane windows at young girls in matching 'Go-Go' outfits and boots and every one of them with a little submachine guns on straps in front of them...it was so surreal we didn't know to laugh or scream at it all...Mal Evans took the bags of money off the plane and he was telling us "Tell my wife I love her if I don't come back" and all that, and right then was the time we all knew it was over for touring for us, that was the limit right then...WE NEVER GOT PAID")

    Sadly it was common for managers, producers, record companies and even disc jockeys to to take songwriting royalties even when they had little or nothing to do with composing the songs. Buddy was not the only one to have this happen too. Heroin addicted and bigamist Frankie Lymon had mobster and music entrepreneur Morris Levy taking credit and control of his songwriting credits and was never paid his songwriting royalties during his lifetime. Both Norman Petty and Morris Levy owned their own production houses and produced records of other artists. Petty's Studio in Clovis, New Mexico was legendary and help developed the then popular Tex-Mex rock sound. Levy was convicted of extortion in 1990 but died before serving time in prison. He owned and operated the famous club Birdland where Jazz greats Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon performed. In the mid 1970's he sued John Lennon for stealing a line from a Chuck Berry song. Lennon settled out of court. He sued Lennon again and this time Lennon counter sued. Both were awarded settlements with Lennon getting the better of the awards by a large amount.

    • @johnyohann6946

      John Fogerty got screwed over, too.

    • @Diosprometheus
      @Diosprometheus 5 лет назад +1

      @@johnyohann6946 Fogerty was selfish in his CCW days and caused resentments, much like Brian Jones did with the Stones, among his band-mates and his own brother who took the side of the record company during his disputes over royalties with them and record executive and movie producer Saul Zaentz.
      When CCW was breaking up, John wanted out his contract with Fantasy records so he signed away even more than the original contract had stipulated. As a result Fantasy Records owns the distribution and publishing rights to the music of CCR. Fantasy records made bad investments and cause CCR, including Fogerty millions of dollars.
      The group was able to recoup some of it from legal actions. There were many lawsuits between Fogerty and Zaentz for all sorts of things. Fogerty won most of these. Ironically when Zaentz left the company and sold his interest, Fogerty resigned with them.
      Leonard Cohen was ripped off by his own longtime manager and friend, much like John Wayne was in the 1950's. She stole his money and also sold off his publishing rights, (This also happened o the Beatles). She took more than five million dollars from him and left his piratically penniless.
      Cohen sued the woman and won a 9 million dollar settlement which she then ignored so he never got his money back. ( A similar thing happened to a friend of mine who worked in the broadcast industries.) Leonard was a trusting individual, like Wayne was, and did not have a head for business. He gave away the rights to his first hit Suzanne, which Judy Collins, made famous. He later said, "I was duped into giving up the rights for the song, but was glad it happened, as it would be wrong to write a song that was so well loved and to get rich for it also." The flaw in his naive statement is that somebody else was making incredible amounts of money from the song.
      Cohen spent much of he rest of his life touring and recording, in spite of incredible pain to his back and legs and suffering from leukemia, trying to recoup his losses and pay off his creditors.

    • @lynktalz
      @lynktalz 5 лет назад +2

      DJGrandPa, what you say is true. Some of the facts I found in the wiki articles on Buddy Holly and Norman Petty are interesting.
      Buddy had already become popular while at Decca but wanted more creative control, so he sought out Petty, who had produced hits for other singers. It wasn't as though Petty was going after Buddy to get his money.
      The recordings Petty made of Buddy's songs are the best and most polished of Buddy's efforts. After Buddy's death, Buddy's family asked Petty to complete various unfinished works by Buddy, which Petty did. So, there may have been other reasons why Petty acted the way he did, though it was still wrong to take more than his rightful share.
