Speaking from mechanics alone, generating energy to swing that mace from a cartwheel would create a nice amount of striking power, from a fantasy fighting view its actually a really cool idea to give a character a mace to fight like that, goes together like butter and bread, her having a shield/buckler to make up for the mace's lack of defense is a nice little accuracy touch.
I really love the way you analyze these things, affording liberty for readability and "coolness" while also being concerned with the immersive-realism aspects. Beautiful work you do.
Interesting. Hey left guard looks a lot like a bait my teacher taught me with escrima sticks. There are differences but in general it's a bait to lure out an opponents weapon, parry strike the weapon, and deliver an immediate power strike with the back hand. Buuuuttt those are sticks, not shields, so ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭
Or swords, for that matter. Escrima is excellent, but when weapons that could take a finger off with a flick are on the table my priorities are to covering that hand as much as feasible.
I appreciate that you took the need for readability into consideration! Lots of folks with these vids knock on a lot of decisions, but the truth is there'd be some *really* unfun games out there if designers prioritized reality over play.
I used to do Kali stick fighting in addition to HEMA. Her impact weapon technique is mostly surprisingly good. She goes from chambered to striking back to chambered in a different guard most of the time. Way more realism than I expect from a video game.
You could do the hand under the buckler guard for low. Sets up for an unexpected strike out from side or over the buckler. Or you could keep the buckler over your hand and just do an under strike.
Fun fact most actual sword masters and the like from historical studies have already done a documentary or atleast a little say in the for honor fighting styles. Though yes just a little off they were surprised how close they got everything in the moves
Maybe she can give a little extra “oomph” by pushing her mace with the shield and if the mace misses an already primed punch with the shield can make for an immediate follow up
The devs also gave her a small window during the startup of the attack that she follows the first one up with, but not my fav character who wields a longsword ;-; back when I did HEMA I was always taught to always try and block/parry a counterattack after you strike
They definitely are, and as a player who's been playing it since the beta I gotta say that thanks to this beautiful game I now look like a 66 year old when Im actually 27
Bracing the mace on her shield looks like a makeshift two-hand strike posture. Only reason I can see her doing that is to propel the macr forward with assistance from the shield.
Is everyone playing this game but me? I'm literally playing everything else lol, Mordhau, Bannerlord, Gloria Victis. This game just looks like Hollywood's idea of different eras of warriors.
I think the reason the shield is behind is to maybe immediately block a counter attack or something like that, although I'm pretty stupid and have no idea what I'm talking about, so let me know if I'm wrong
They also constantly try to sheathe swords in campaign cutscenes *but there's no scabbard.* So they do the motions but it's just their hand and now they look stupid holding sharp blades with a hand and pretending as if it was sheathed.
I'd imagine the idea behind the shield behind the hand is that she could push the mace forward with it for more striking power. But I also dont know anything about wielding a mace other than "dont lock your wrist or you'll hurt yourself."
You have a buckle shield she is using a different kind of shield that’s durable and lightweight to throw sure they are similar but they are not the same
Very much so, especially since she's using a shield with a handle instead of arm straps. All she has to do is turn her hand and her mace holding hand is basically uncovered and ready to go.
i want to know what causes these mistakes to make it into the end product, would it really have killed them to tilt the shield in front of the mace hand? Like it's such a small tweak that would make it actually sensible, almost makes me wonder if it's on purpose to drive enagement
considering it's a video game that requires reading the movement of your opponent, I feel like clarity over realism took precedence. though, in my opinion, I don't think the shield being over the hand would really get in the way of readability.
@@robinswordsOr in another comment mentioned warlord, another hero and I guess they don't want to reused animations from other heroes cuz people kinda spicy for it.
Hey Robin, question for ya. I recently got my first sword in a katana from AuthenticWeaponry but I'm not really sure what goes into maintaining it. I've heard wiping it every day with a dry cloth is good so that's what I have been doing, and I oiled it for the first time with the oil I use for my hair clipper (I applied a little bit of oil, just a light coat) once it started drying up, am I doing this right? Thanks
Basically the main concern is keeping the blade lightly coated. Everyone has their preference in oils to use, but the important thing is keeping a protective layer so it doesn't oxidize and rust. I generally only reapply oil when I've been handling it - though I handle most swords in my collection with some regularity so they get re-oiled fairly often. Though some pieces will go a couple months without me paying them any mind. It'll also vary according to your humidity and etc. I personally think wiping it down once a day is overkill. And if you do get some light rust, it's not the end of the world. It can be removed and repolished.
As a for honor player with 640+ hours in the game I hate afeera. I hated her when she came out and I still hate her. I can't wait for her to get the pirate treatment.
The last gaurd, is it not simular to the hilander gaurd. being that her stances center of gravity is more backward and there for easier to retreat or avoid an attack?
My opinion I don't think it makes sense. For her to have a mace I would say maybe a curved sword or something I don't know if you doesn't make any sense to me
Well it partially makes sense for what shes inspired from which are the mamelukes (who were also using maces and shields in combination). Yes, a curved sword would've fit way better but its not "not making" sense since a mace is very good against armor and we kinda have most people wearing armor in that game so...

I think I've seen her left guard stance in Razmafzar (persian martial art) iirc it's actual use is to lock enemies weapon when they hit your shield
I read somewhere that part of what her fighting style is based on is exactly that martial art alongside Arabic mace fighting
Although Afeera is Arab not Persian but that looks similar.

I was wondering if you could cover the warlord if you haven’t already.
The shield behind is a stand for her second hand with the weapon to have some rest

It’s fine she’s able to do full cartwheels in full plate armor and pause herself midway through a bash even though she’s in the air so she’s be ok.
