Johor Bahru, often referred to as the "Little Shenzhen" influenced by Singapore, has experienced a journey from booming popularity to a period of calm. Does it still have a promising future?
Shenzhen is a city that many international metropolises envy. In just about 30 years, it has developed into one of China's top cities and ranks highly globally. Similarly, Johor Bahru in Malaysia is called the "Little Shenzhen."
This nickname comes from its geographical proximity to Singapore, separated only by the Johor Strait. Johor Bahru, the capital of Johor state, is the closest city to Singapore. In many people's eyes, Johor Bahru is the southern gateway of Malaysia. The relationship between Johor Bahru and Singapore is akin to that between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Singapore has driven economic growth in Johor Bahru, and Johor Bahru supplies fresh water to Singapore. So, from this geographical perspective, calling Johor Bahru the "Little Shenzhen" is quite fitting. The only difference lies in the economic development that requires time to build.
But what has Johor Bahru experienced from its booming days to the present calm?
As we have entered Phase 2, more businesses and shops will open up, and hopefully, the economy will recover quickly. However, within the city of Johor Bahru, especially around the old town, things are progressing more slowly. I am confident, hopeful, and optimistic that as we move into Phase 3 or Phase 4, and eventually as the borders reopen, Johor Bahru will transform into a more vibrant city than before. Upgrading, renovating, and construction work are still ongoing to prepare for the future.
