I prefer a 27.2mm post, simply for the availability. I agree that the wedge clamping systems are all a bit poor. The latest practice seems to be providing a rubber cover to try and keep the sweat/rain out of the clamp area…yeah…that’s not gonna work too well. I use a clamp with 2 bolts, one tightens around the frame and one around the post. It’s a little heavier, but I save weight by running rim brakes. 😂

No flex in an aero seatpost either due to it`s shape. A seatpost acts as a cantilever (fixed at one end and a heavy weight at the other), they actually flex much more than you`d think. So a standard 27.2 post is far far more comfortable. Although saying that I`ve ridden Looks with their E-Posts and they are much better than most. I also believe the reason why Trek designed their Iso Speed system is because without it their bikes would be almost un rideable. Another reason why so many of us are riding with wider heavier tyres, to overcome the problems with modern uncomfortable bikes.

My rule is : if the sitpost isnt Round I am not buying it . Thats reason why so many aero sitpost , d shape and many other design creeks and slides down . Bec the clamping system isnt evenly distrubuted . Just like watches , and tubes are always round coz no other shape design seals better and clamps better than a round one .

Same here. I just ignore bikes that feature proprietary parts. Also with the wedge design, the most expensive part (frame) is under tension and is likely to fail in extreme situation. With standard external clamp on a round seatpost, the most stressed part is the least expensive (the seatpost clamp), and the frame is the most relaxed part, as it is squeezed between the post and the clamp.

@@lekobiashvili945 the fix for that is to use a seatpost tube bushing, some people call them shims or sleeves, but stuff like that would Not even be needed if bikes weren't built so cheaply.

27.2 round seatpost with a 3 or 5mm allen head clamp ... with Campagnolo or Deda style seat rail clamps
There are many other brands with clever methods of clamping the seat rails, but I find it all very fiddly or in ENVE's case great ease of install but at a high price.
There is 31.6 as well, but I personally think only 90kg+ riders need the extra strength it offers.
But I would go further & suggest the choice of seat rail material is just as important. Also if you push your seat way forward or all the way back on the seat rails it does tend to come loose, so the choice of set back option for seat post is just as important.
0mm, 10mm, 15mm, 25mm, 35mm depending on your Femur bone length & bicycle frame angles.

The integrated seatpost on my TCR Advanced SL doesn't slide down, but it certainly creeks sometimes because of the bad fitting seat clamp

Mine is similar to the TCR. I like the design, but not good for travel as it sticks up high when in the box.

Bought a seatpost from Aliexpress last month, 136g, 27.2 * 350mm for 26 canadian dolloar. My canyon seatpost is 220g. Standard round seatpost is better for substitution

I am all for the benefits of proprietary seat post. 1. They provide an aero advantage. 2. Your saddle is always straight. 3 The D shapes can be very light. 4. They are very compliant even the aluminum ones. Mine doesn’t creek or slide but stays put. We will see more aftermarket brands start making them

27.2 all the way. I've ended up with a draw full of seat posts over the last 3 years. New cheapy bike recently arrived and I was able to do a upgrade before first ride 😎

PS, got 3 builds on the go, totally forgot about the brilliant clamping system on my 2012 Boardman Air 9.2 TT frame.....there is a clamp at the back of the seat post, this covers the back half of the post, the frame is shaped so this fits into it and 2 bolts secure it to the frame, amazing and simple design, later models went for the wedge as others. Hard to explain but worth a search.

I kind of have the same dilemma as you. I have my seat as far forward on my 2018 Giant TCR Advanced pro. I really wish they would make a zero setback seat post. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Your mate Durian Bangs bangs on about 27.2 and I think I agree.
I had trouble with my Merckx San Remo slipping, got a new post under warranty.
Guy from the track is a bike mechanic at Swinnerton cycles, he says grease the bolt and carbon paste the post as when new the bolt can be a little tight and you get a false torque reading and also set torque to upper limit..... Merckx said 8 to 10. Not had a problem with new post.

    • @waynosfotos
      @waynosfotos  2 года назад +2

My view is why do we have to do all this extra stuff? When you buy a car you don't have to go around retorque bolts and grease things to get them to work properly. That was 40 years ago. When you pay this much it should just work as advertised.

I remember TDU 2020 when I stopped to help a race guy from Education first. His seatpost with that wedge kept slipping. He was so annoyed and tryed to tighten that wedge even more. Sad to see that corporation pushing this BS. All advantage of all this marketing bs is pain in the ass for us! :D

You know how in NASCAR they wrote a bunch of specs to keep the competition level, keep the speeds down and the costs of development relatively low? Right, here goes, specs for UCI bikes. External BB, 6kg weight, only round contact points (stem, bars, seatpost), no cables to run through the bars and stem.
    Problems solved

Easton EC90 SL ISA, 0 or 20mm setback options, one bolt to fix the rails and two grub screws to adjust the tilting without the need to move the seat in the rails, pretty impressing.

Was hoping to deliver a out and about vid down by the river. But overall the sound didn't turn out good.

I am disappointed with your saddle position Wayno. You must be falling forwards with a position like this. You even have a short nosed saddle making it worse. The BB to saddle distance is the most crucial part of a bike fit. If this frame is not too big for you, which I suspect it is, then you certainly need a much shorter stem, to get that seat back. There is no shame in riding a shorter stem.

    • @waynosfotos

The frame is not to small, use to ride 54, but used to many spacers so went to a 56.

Seem like we have to live with it. ^_^
ps. Talking about the best seat post adjustment system I think my Softride Triathlon bike win this issue hand down. The friction bolt&nut that lock the cantilever beam in place is located horizontally 2 feet away from the saddle so the downforce don't directly works against the friction force ... On Softride the lock system works half hinge half friction which make it really firm.
