I'm also in the crowd in some of the videos I put up(Not this one). Apart from the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, I found it was often better to sit a few rows back rather than right at the front as the view of the table was better. Back in the 80s and 90s it was also very easy to get good seats without having a mad rush to buy them the day tickets were released as there were no resale websites back then.
Absolutely FANTASTIC......and Jimmy n Alex were sooo close and best mates away from the table, always will be ,R.I.P 'Hurricane 'Higgins.....We miss ya!! ....Back when Snooker was GREAT!! ...Full of flair, fun and real 'characters'
@colin ryshaf and when did they cheat.. ? I saw a match from 1982 or 83, about 3 months ago and higgins was on a good break and then walked away and said to the referee "i touched a red" as the way the balls were packed together alex had to bridge over about 2 reds at least, it was a hard shot to make and to keep his break going but if any one could do play that shot it would be alex higgins. And he was on a break of 47. The audience clapped him for his honesty and great sportsmanship for a long 15 to 20 seconds. But i cant remember off the top of my head any other players that did that, and its well known they know they have touched a ball taking a shot.
"And Jimmy's potting literally doing all of the commentary here." God what I'd give for this kind of commentary again. Let the play flow and don't over describe what's happening. Maybe that's me though.
Absolutely agree with you ... The guys on eurosport never shut there attention seeking mouths..... With the exception of Joe Johnson and the Space Man .... They're great 🙂
Two of the GOATs in my opinion...not a huge amount of titles between them but they have created an ever lasting impression on the game that is rare to achieve...only O'Sullivan, Hendry and Steve Davis have also achieved that in my opinion.
so glad to have witnessed all these games back in the day. much tougher conditions. heavier balls, inconsistent tables and slower cloths. much harder game in the 80s than now
i know we didn't know how good we had it, its only as time marches on you realize they really were the glory years, nowadays its just one catastrophe after the next...lol
There’s something very Christopher Reeve about Jimmy in these early days. I showed a woman friend of mine a frame from Kirk Stevens playing Jimmy White, thinking it was obvious Kirk was the more beautiful human being, but she said she preferred Jimmy! Alas, no time machine available.
Seen them both and all the other olden days players at the may and September pontins prestatyn snooker festivals which gave the winners professional status great days from around 1974 great weeks my kids now grown up played with john Williams the then referee granddaughter great times indeed
Absolutely LOVE these two. Only person who gets near them is O'Sullivan. HOWEVER.........that opening frame was one of the worst i've seen for misses, bad positional play, bad safety etc. It was like me and my pal on a Friday night!! They made up for it though!!
Murdo mcleod the Scotland champ who seldom won a match .then hendry came along and then John higgins and beat them all lol.aint it strange how things can turn around like that.
@@paleshelter4002 yeah indeed.some of the balls jimmy potted there you never really see that kind of pots today .like the long rail pots and the spin he had on the cue ball in one or two of these shots.i could hardly believe it really.never seen that kind of spin on a ball before.
One of the comments there was he modeled his game on higgins.i don't agree as they were nothing alike really in play or shots .only thing in common is they could both play fast but Alex could take while on shots too sometimes if it was a big shot .
When jimmy was on a roll there was none like him .it just flowed out of him the talent .Alex was not as fluent but could pot amazing balls and play very crafty shots too.
@@ianwilliamson2980 yes exactly mate.. I'm Canadian and my favorite game was when Kirk Stevens had a 147 against Jimmy.. Jimmy won the match, but was very impressed by the young Canadian lad.. great era for snooker!
Two great players of there era it looks odd these days as things seem so much easier to the young players to just pot the lot prehaps thats why snooker has lost some apeal it just looks easy even though its not
Canadian snooker player who was quite deliberate in his style of play. Beat both White and Hallett in the 83 Jameson. Didn't really stay that long on the snooker tour. Reached a couple of Canadian Open Pool Championship Finals in 2008 and 2010
Watching Jimmy play through the years is like watching different players. It's as if his natural style of play was coached out of him, swapping and changing stuff and it's made him worse.
It's incredible to watch the game evolve so much too. Both great players in their day, but wouldn't even get through the qualifying stages in the modern game.
@@cutlerlon8468 Correct, both natural flair, Alex's use of side, running side and reverse side was genius level. But the tables now are so different, Jimmy didn't really need to change his game but to keep up with practice but all the changes in the pro game were happening quickly and he couldn't keep up from 1994 onwards he wasnt the same and saw problems that weren't there, partly lifestyle choices too. Practicing in clubs on older and slower tables, then he went to 2 coaches and had his game worked on. In clubs and exhibitions he's faultless and on a different level, putting in a big tournament and even qualifying now and he's a fish out of water. He didnt need to change his play at all. Also putting weight on didnt help him, Shame really. Higgins played to an audience should have and could have won so much more in his time. He wasn't treated fairly at all by the WPBSA, they hated him so unorthodox and what he did worked but relied on his natural talent to pull him through..even with that you have to apply yourself..he didn't. Great players to watch though and 2 of my favourites
@@LordFlashheart.11 Higgins could easily compete in today's game, as could Reardon and Spencer, they were masters of the game and do everything as good as if not better than today's players. Mmm I'm not sure. Alex was 35 and on a downward spiral by 1985 but very little footage exists of Alex when he was in his prime and as young as Jimmy is here. Of course by the time Jimmy was 35 he too was sadly past his best.
Higgins was a cleverer tactical player by far, the game was very different when Higgjns was in his early 70s potting prime, Higgins tactical prowess was as good as anybody who's ever played. Alex could also compete with Jimmy regards potting, long screw, screw and side, etc when he was on form, as he could with anybody. Higgins was player full length screw shots in the 70s with heavier balls and cloth, and Spencer too. Higgins' best years in terms of controlled snooker was the early 80s, when he knew he had to calm down just a little if he was going to win titles.
There is a 13 year old me in the crowd here and actually in this footage. A moment in time that I am lucky enough to see in this way. Thank you

Back in the 90s when I went to the Crucible often. It was only £5 for the 1st round matches and you could get a seat from row 1 to 10 ✨

When it was called ‘The Snooker’.
This is the Jimmy White, I considered in his peak in snooker, precise, relax, natural and just play to show how snooker is played, not how to win
147 it's my idea of heaven.......love Alex ❤
It's miracle Alex won this match
He didn’t.
Higgins best ever middle pocket player
There seems to be a waterfall in the arena
Lots of phlegmy coughing between shots back in them days.
Bring back the flowers.

That shot by Higgins at 1:30:50 !!!!!!
A hurricane classic
Perfect timing.
Rather see a swashbuckling 50 or 60 than a perfect percentage 100 plus

2:05:04 A change of camera angle a split second into the shot and the viewer misses the incredible shot.
