People also don't realize it's more of a collectors item, anyone that wants a handheld can just go on the internet and get one that runs 99% of every game ever made at $500
custom electronics like this is alot like glassblowing. youre paying for all of the messups until the final product. its very easy to mess up a Trimmed Wii board and brick your whole setup. or slip with a soldering iron and mess up your custom painted 3d printed case.
It's a hyper niche market where every single product is made to order, by hand. These handhelds (and really any custom handmade good) literally fall into the same category of market as something like a bespoke custom sports car.
Considering the R&D, hours of assembly that go into the units, and messups along the way; It's not an outrageous price. The sticker shock is real but it is a fair price.
$1500 seems downright reasonable for this kind of labour. I don't think I'd pay a big company this much for a product like this, because economies of scale and all that - but this clearly has been designed with experience in mind, rather than selling at a price point. Incredible work. Can't wait to see more on this project if you do a deeper dive.

To build the custom PCBs, figure out the perfect cuts, design the case, and hammer out the BOM. Plus it basically being a one off means you don't get the perks of large scale discounts. Honestly, it sounds like a good deal after all that. You've basically created a whole new device from the ground up. Kudos to you! You do great work and I love every bit of it.

I love this! This is a form factor that is so intriguing to me! As a kid I always wanted my gameboy advance to be able to play my GameCube games, so following your projects has struck such a chord in me! Although it might be some time before I’m able to tackle this project, I’m still attempting to get my ashida build to work :/ Ginger you truly are a wizard!

Dude this is freaking sick! I can’t believe how small and portable you were able to make it. I actually wanted to make a portable Wii, and all my friends told me it wasn’t possible, and this gave me a HUGE inspirational boost. I’m so impressed with the Wiiboy color, wow.

Awesome build, Love the concept, Its cool seeing people build these cool projects and continue to enjoy the older games that defined my younger days of gaming, but for 1500$ I think I'll just stick a Wii and a portable battery bank & display in a backpack if i really need to play with my wii on the go.
$1500 is a very fair price, not sure why people are complaining so much. Think of the labor involved and the years of practice it took to get to a point of selling something like this. Also good luck finding anyone else willing to sell portables let alone at the same level of quality of this.

Heck all the pcbs and 3d models are free to use so you can skip all 4 years of r&d

Hey, listen!!! Consider using dye sublimation if you're gonna injection mold the case! It impregnates the ink directly into the plastic, making it the most durable way to print on plastic, short of doubleshot injection molding.
