- Here’s a fun one. An old folk song - a spirit song. I first heard it from Barbara Dane, but some ghost or ghosts deserve the credit.

Wow !! Love this
Voice and playing
Sounds SO great! One of thee best versions of this timeless classic! Really like your interpretation and approach to this song!
well thank you very much.
Why do people like you not get the credit they deserve? So much soul. Not that it matters, but are you flat picking the banjo? If so, it makes me love this even more.
🤎 thanks so much. (It’s some kinda clawhammer style.)
Love your voice . and that song is awesome. The world is a better place with your music in it.
That’s sweet thank you.
This is the first time I've come across your music. Lovely! Finally RUclips is giving me what i want to see! 🎉
Great! Hello!
Very nice, Kelley. I really like your voice.
Thank you and hello :)
@@KelleySmithMusic To the best of my knowledge the song is an old railroad song, author unknown. It is known from as early as 1909. Sorry I don't have any references or further information. Keep pickin', keep singing, keep digging.
Glad to be the first to comment. Very nice performance!
Love this ❤ Greetings from Germany

It is indeed a magic banjo ;)
I can practically hear a ghost or some ghosts humming along....
😂👍
You make me pick up my guitar every time you post. I truly appreciate you sharing your talent.
these old songs can’t help but be passed along again and again. happy to read that, thank you.
Been sub'd for quite a while and I have one rule. When you pop in the feed with a new song, I stop and give it a listen. Happy you've stuck with it. Lovely stuff here.
Wow thank you so much. This is kind-of my relaxation space on the internet.
Very reminiscent of my favourite version of this song, by Terry Callier. I'll have to add this to my to learn list ❤
Nice one Kelly.😀
Outstanding!
Love the groove girl
Wrill good song.
This is absolutely lovely, what a treat!
You’re such an inspiration to me Kelley!
that’s wondrous, thank you :)
Awesome! Is that done in sawmill tuning?
Gm! Lower the B to Bb ~
Great!!!❤
Great performance.
❤❤ soulful
Bravo!!!
Amazing version! Congratulations from Brazil.
Well hello from Minnesota!
@@KelleySmithMusic I was there in 2005. I hope to return one day to watch your presentation.
Come sempre, ottimo lavoro
What tuning are you in? So beautiful
Gm. Thank you!
What tuning do you use? Sawmill? It's beautiful.
Thank you! I think this one is Gm.
amazing work! beautiful sound and lonesome tones
Well thanks!
I really enjoyed this. Thanks! One day I'll learn clawhammer.
Love your sound on this tune. I know you're playing clawhammer, but it doesn't sound like regular bum-ditty. Any advice on how to work on getting closer to this kind of sound. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi! Try alternating which strings you thumb. Seems to create more space for vocals and whatnot.
I like your voice. Are you playing a Pisgah Rambler Dobson banjo?
Yes I am!
@@KelleySmithMusic I have that, too. Lots of bass and sustain but it’s so heavy it feels like a big hubcap in my lap.
@@MitchMb14 agreed.
How are you tuned for this please?
Gm. Just tune your B string to Bb.
This is awesome. Is it Gm? EDIT: Never mind the question, it is Gm!
I love it!
Fun ;)
It's easy to play, but I really dig your rest strokes and drop thumb. I'm stealing the entire arrangement of course.

Made me grab my gutair and strum along
That great!
Nice Kelley 🏵🌹 🪕
Hopeless romantic huh? 😉😘
married.
This is really fantastic, there's nothing quite like this rendition on RUclips. Really is like Barbara Dane but slower and on a banjo. Most players use a guitar for this and some play ruebens train on banjo which shares a lot of lyrics but they play it fast. This really hits all the boxes for how a slow somber banjo version which fits well for the lyrics. Excellent stuff. What tuning are you in?
Thank you so much. I do plan to record this for a folk album some time soon. I was experimenting with Gm tuning awhile back and was running through the songs I knew that would work well in the tuning. Started working this one out and it came pretty quickly.
@KelleySmithMusic awesome, ill be sure to pick it up when you release it. Looking forward to it
