    3 - How to save a configuration to disk
    4 - How to initialise the MC-50
    5 - How to record a track
    6 - How to add MIDI-events to an existing track.

    good tutorial. but one point: when I tried to save the configuration, there's one point you have to consider, when saving the first time. it's important to set "A-Load, MIDI and VIEW to "1".
    If the disc already contains a config file, you can choose which settings (from internal memory) will be updated (1), which not (0) or which will be initilaized/erased on the disk.

      @@theMIDImaniac no prob. Do you have a solution for this issue: When I recorded the notes of a JV1010 Patch, the internal memory was almost full after recording one track with just about 60 measures. does the patch send too much informations?

      @@mroctagon2834 Perhaps you've also recorded a lot of MIDI messages like Pitch Bend, Aftertouch, Velocity.
      I advice you to do some data thinning.
      This can be done with EDIT 13. (page 102 - Owner's manual II Reference)

    It's a basic sequencer. I mean, while it doesn't have any bells and whistles, it gets the job done..
    It's very much like the one on the XP-50 keyboard. I think the alesis MMT-8 is a sequencer that a lot people like, cause of it's simple workflow, and also the Kawai Q-80, which is kinda powerful..
    The (maybe) most important IMO, as you very nice show in the video Roger, is to understand the difference about the midi channels and the tracks, in the beginning is much possible to confuse them...
    The good thing is that you can layer synths in the same midi channel, to play the same track, so you'll get a BIG sound..a lot of people did that in the good old days...and nowdays too..!!!
    Stay cool Roger..!!!

      The setting is as follow:
      Keyboard Out to MC IN
      Sound Module IN to MC Out A or B
      Then you will be able to play the sound module and also be able to record the played notes.
      The Thru-function disables the recording function. So you can play but you can’t record and replay.
      Hope this helps.

    Good work Roger - thanks again. How much memory is used by the Sysex of the sliders? You only have 720k to store to on disk!

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  6 лет назад +1

      Tim Saddler thanks 😁! Good question! I didn’t record sysex, it was midi cc-info. The MC-50 isn’t really suitable for sysex due to what you’ve mentioned (only 720kB). Based on the midi-cc: How much memory was used in this video I don’t know. I didn’t check. But you can check it with the ‘track monitor’. When you notice you’re memory is getting full, you can choose ‘data thin’ to take away unused midi information. You’ve got to try that to see if it works for you, because it can lead to stepping of filters.
      Nowadays 720kB is nothing but remember that the MC-50 has room for 40.000 notes.
      But you already know this kind of info 💪🏽✌🏽

    • @timsaddler6402
      @timsaddler6402 6 лет назад +1

      Roger The MIDI MANIAC indeed that is true , I gigged for years with Alesis datadisk 720k double density disk . The thing stuttered if you used more than 85% of the 720k so 620k was the maximum! I could get one 45 min set on a disk including midi lighting and this was back in the 90’s. to be fair it was mostly drums and bass . Roland R8m for drums and Roland DS 330 dr synth for bass . Most keys played live.

    Hello, i have been having fun with my mc50, but last time i turn it on it shows me a BUFFER FULL error, press stop. i dont have that many songs recorded in, i cleaned some data but still shows the same error. • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  3 года назад

      Hi!
      Let me think.
      How long are your songs?
      How many are loaded at once?
      How many instruments are used for a song?
      Do you use the MC also for recording controller data like Midi cc and sysex?
      The amount of songs on a disk don’t influence the buffer. It’s mostly because of loading too many songs into the memory and also when you use a lot of other data like pitch bend/modulation/cut off etc.
      Try on a song to use DATA THIN.
      Once I had a faulty pitch bender which caused a lot of data recording without noticing because it only send -1 and +1 info.
      In Microscope you can read if there’s more recorded than only notes.
      I hope this helps.

I have seen the GOTEK solution, but from what I understand, that is just simply is a total replacement of the entire floppy disk drive of MC-50, into a U.S.B drive (which is great for working on new material and saving those onto USB, but it doesn't exactly help for above my scenario). @@theMIDImaniac Yes! There is also a company out there called Giebler (apparently) which sells a software-based solution where you can convert the S-MRC data on the MC-50 formatted floppy-disk into 'SMF' data. I assume after this, it should be readable by any external or built-in floppy disk drive (as it will now be in 'standard midi format'). Obviously you would want to do this on a spare-copy disk which is meant only for storage and file-transfers) & not mess with any of your master disks or 'performance' disks, which you should leave as is for using directly with the MC-50.

      El MC se puede conseguir por precios razonables aquí en España. (100-150€)
      Pero no se si donde vives tu.
      De todas formas, para grabar canciones de tu XPS te hace falta un secuenciador.

    A great sequencer, but mine has been switching off randomly. I have switched out to a different power adapter and hopefully that issue stops. If not.. I might have to open it up and see what’s going in inside 🙄

      If anyone has faced this issue.. Turns out its just a matter of tightening up the casing screws on front (and maybe also the base). I think the contact points in the front can come a bit loose on some of these older machines. After tightening, it doesn't just randomly switch off/reboot if I unplug or plug in the midi cables!

    Can you load MIDI files created on computer into the MC-50? Would love take just a sound module my drum machine and the MC-50 to a live performance (church stuff).

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  4 года назад

      Berkner80 that’s an excellent idea and yes, it’s possible.
      The only this is that you will need the MC-50MKII or the MC-50 with a new ROM installed to read SMF-files.
      Standard Midi Files can be created with programs like Sonar and Cubase.
      You have to program all midi channels with the right program changes to make sure the sound modules uses the right sounds.
      But yes, it’s possible.
      Too bad I work with Mac which can’t do anything with 3.5” floppies.
      But perhaps the Gotek USB solution can work too.
      Good luck and thanks for asking.

      @@theMIDImaniac Just FYI: I was able to convert a SMF to a S-MRC file (using Giebler Enterprises software) so the MC-50 could load and play it. A very simple 4 track SMF I made myself on Cubase but it did work. MC-50 petty complicated even with the manual but I did finally figure it out. Just to let you know it can be done. However, you will need a computer running Windows 98 or ME to run the old MS-DOS program, the Windows emulators on the net I found did not work for me. Luckily I am old school and had an old Windows version.

    Thank you! This video helped me get everything working! Cause those old Roland manuals... no help at all! Can you tell me how to hook up the midi cables from the control synth (mine is a cz1000) to the JV1010 (also using as my sound module) and the MC50? That is the only thing still baffling me. I have it working just from the CZ to the MC50 but I want the JV sounds. I have my drum machine in MC50 out 2 and the sync all working ,even a footswitch to start it all so I'm ready with my guitar at the beginning... just need to know how to hook the midi to the ins and outs and thru on the 3 devices... Thanks in advance!

      Hi! Great it helped you :D Great to have the foot switch attached.
      Ok, I'll explain the connection.
      MC-50 MIDI IN to CZ MIDI OUT
      JV-1010 MIDI IN to CZ MIDI THRU
      CZ MIDI IN to MC50 MIDI OUT
      Drum machine is already connected.
      If the CZ doesn't have a MIDI THRU then do the following:
      CZ MIDI IN to JV1010 MIDI THRU
      JV1010 MIDI IN to MC50 MIDI OUT1
      This is called 'daisy chaining' in MIDI terms.
      Give it a try!

      Roger

      Ok now I've got all this working and recording on track 1, and I want to connect my Yamaha MX49 to the MC50 as well so I can play a second part on that keyboard on track 2. I have the MX49 midi out going to the IN on the MC50 in addition to the above connections. I set the midi channel on the MX49 to channel 3 but I can't get the MC50 to record the MX49 on track 2. It's not picking up the MX49 at all. How do I do that so I can record a sound on the MX49 to track 2 of my song? Also is it ok if I keep asking questions? thanks!

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  5 лет назад +1

      Ok! Let me help you. To understand MIDI this is very important.
      You have to think the other way around like audio. A synth has AUDIO OUT but MIDI OUT means that MIDI signals are send OUT. Now here it comes...A sequencer sends a signal out to synths to tell them 'PLAY THAT NOTE!'. So, the cable on the sequencer has to be on OUT and on the synths on IN.
      If you want to add the MX49 as a sound module then you have to connect a cable to MIDI IN to a MIDI THRU on another synth. It's that daisy chaining thing.
      Your control synth (CZ1000) will be able to play the sounds of the MX49 and you will able to record on track 2.
      Good luck and keep on asking question ;-)
      Grtzzz,
      Roger

      Roger The MIDI MANIAC ok thanks . Here’s the thing though - I still want to have the cz controlling the jv on channel 1 but also want to add the mx49 on channel two if possible so I can record and play back that one too . And the drum machine is still hooked up for midi sync on channel 10. So confused lol but you are helping a lot

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  5 лет назад +1

      Set the MX49 on channel 2.
      Can you play the sounds of the MX49 on the CZ? Set the channel of the CZ on MIDI channel 2 too.
      If yes, you can record on track 2.
      Your CZ is your MIDI CONTROL keyboard through the MC-50 so you have to change Midi channels on the CZ to hear sounds from other synths.
      Give it a try :D

    To get to the beginning of the track, quicker to press RESET, rather than use the alpha dial. I have recently bought a JV1000 workstation on the basis that I already knew how to operate an MC300 from years ago, however, the JV1000 polyphony is very limited as the patches are made up of multiple tones, so I bought a JV1080, they share many sounds, yet the JV1000 has a much better sounding Piano. Nice to work on hardware again, but I still prefer a DAW environment, much quicker to build a track in Logic, then transfer to the hardware sequencer for live use.

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  6 лет назад

      Hi Lee! Thanks for sharing your tip. Nice you've bought the JV1080. Ever played with the JV-1010? The built-in Session Expansion has some nice pianos also + all JV1080 + JV2080 sounds. Ah...also an extra slot to add a SR-JV card. These days this JV-1010 is sold for peanuts IMO.
      I do believe you that it's quicker to build a track in Logic. I don't have experience with those kind of operations but perhaps in the future. :D

One crucial issue is storing sequencer configuration. thanks to your user pointing that out (it would drive me nuts forever).
