    That whole wall replacement was quite something! Also I notice that the subtle iridescent Aztec patterns on the Enterprise hull are way more present now, it’s nice to finally see them so well in the movie.

    First off: Good work explaining, comparing & contrasting. Second. I have not yet seen the 2022 version, & I am watching this on an older laptop with a 17" screen. Third. Although the 2022 version is clearly admirable, and has some good elements, I prefer the overall look of the 2001 version. The 2022 version has less contrast, to my eye, and they have over-brightened the exterior shots of spaceships, space walking astronauts, shuttles, space stations, & the Klingon cruisers. They now have that false, much-too-well-lit look that is so common in space fantasy movies like Star Wars and so many others. Especially in scenes that do not take place near Earth or within a solar system. In the 2001 version, when they stop to receive Spock's shuttle (the physics of which is much underappreciated), the Enterprise is in an interstellar region, & it is obvious: the exterior angles show it as sitting in darkness, only illuminated here & there.. From what I've seen, they probably heightened the brightness in that scene in the 2022 version, & that is unfortunate. Part of what distinguisehd STTMP from so many other movies & indeed from the rest of the Star Trek films, was always that high-contrast, light & very dark, this-is-what-space-looks-like, visual aspect. Wise & Co. made a true science fiction film. It's too bad the studio leaned on them so hard that we'll never know what they could have truly accomplished, without people 40 years later trying to suss that out, and "fix" it.

    The Earth as the Enterprise leaves dock wasn't a CGI addition: it was created for TMP in the 1970s, but due to the rushed schedule, there wasn't time to add that particular layer. The changed backdrop really doesn't work in the meeting between Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

    I believe the weird brownish red tint on the warp nacelles isn’t actually on the nacelles and actually some lights inside the officers lounge reflecting off the glass.

    3:02 I'm REALLY pleased they fixed the nacelle angle in that scene. It now sits in perspective with the star-field nicely.

    • @hunter11976
      @hunter11976 2 месяца назад +1

      Except that the nacelle(s) are now much too low for that POV. The bridge module is flush with the nacelles, so, at best, they should be flush with, not BELOW, their line-of-sight. There is literally no way to get that view of the nacelles from the Constitution Refit

      @@hunter11976 Technically you are right. I looked at the blueprints and they should be level with the captain's cabin. So while better, they aren't perfect.

    2:50-3:50 This seems such a weird change to me, changing the lounge windows so they're now located round the bridge dome section. I always assumed this was meant to be located in another section of the Enterprise that's never usually explored on screen. Like judging by the angle of the nacelles in the 2001 version, I thought it was meant to be located round the starboard section of the primary hull facing the starboard nacelle. Plus the original windows actually look the same shape as the windows round that section in exterior shots. I just figured this was what Robert Wise was trying to establish in the 2001 version. Also the furniture at 2:28 looks different to the furniture in the Kirk, Spock and McCoy scene.

      Ikr, from the way the nacelles were angled in the 2001 version, it's kind of obvious they were trying to establish this lounge room was located at a certain section of the Enterprise.

    The New CGi Models are Looking so great. Did you recognize they added soundeffects when the Enterprise starts the Impulse engines? There is also New Sound of the engines at the Scene where the Enterprise flies next to Jupiter. I think they also recreated that shot . In originial directors cut there was only music AT that scenes I think.

    The meeting between Kirk, McCoy and Spock, that one hurts. My eyes just continually drift to McCoy and how he looks like he was cut out of a magazine by a three year old. This redesigned scene is questionable at best and the horrid implementation almost single handedly undoes everything else good combined.

    The Movie Censorship website claims that the 2022 version has new dialogue by Chekov saying "Engineering. Show me your readings on photon capacitors" and "All WD stations. The wall replacement scene, when Kirk and Bones are stalking to Spock does NOT look good. For one, you can tell, and for another it looks like Bones' face is melting in the more distant shot. It's a high tech technique that ends up looking super low-fi. Honestly, all the succesive updates to that scene just keep getting worse. The '79 version still looks best.
