  • Hi everyone, here's a followup video to my previous BS-20 demo. I changed pretty much every piece of hardware - pickups, tuners, bridge, nut, knobs, everything.
    The specs are:
    - basswood body,
    - maple neck
    - amaranthe fretboard
    - Fleor ceramic pickups
    - Gotoh bridge
    - some cheap Chinese tuners
    - GraphTech nut
    Total cost of those upgrades is 150 euro, which in total gives us 250 euro for the entire guitar.
    This is the very first thing that came to my mind after plugging it in for the first time after switching the pickups.
    For the demo track feel free to visit my soundcloud:

    I'm in the prep stages of upgrading the electronics in my brand new Harley Benton S-620 TR, that BS-20 sounds great.

      There is a lot of untapped potential in those cheap guitars. A few months ago I took on my first refret on this one and let me tell you - it punches way above its weight category.

    Looks and sounds great! I'm planning to do the same - buy one and upgrade it. Can you tell me - did you get all those extra parts on the Thomann website? Or somewhere else? Keep up the good work!

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! I got the bridge and nut from Thomann, it's a Gotoh GE103B-T and Gotoh GE101Z-B, the tailpiece fits great but the bridge itself had some issues with stud spacing, so I had to use some pieces of wood to wedge it in place. The nut is a standard GraphTech Tusq XL pre-slotted. The pickups, toggle switch and tuners I got from AliExpress from Fleor store. Also, the small bits - knobs, screws, etc. are all from Thomann.

      @@_fifeusz thanks for your reply! I have some Harley Benton guitars already and they are amazing value for money! It seems like the upgrades cost more that the guitar itself! But BC Rich are not making budget guitars anymore so the Thomann Rock Series is our only option if we don't want to spend a month's salary on a guitar, its seems.

      @@AG02024 Harleys are a phenomenal bang for your buck, and with proper upgrades you will have a hard time to find something as good for the price you pay. The fact that BC Rich aren't making budget models and especially Beast/Son of Beast variants was my main reason to get this one. I wish that Harley Benton made an X-shape like Jackson Warrior or BC Rich Stealth, I actually wrote to them with a question about it and unfortunately they didn't have any plans yet.

      @@_fifeusz funny you should say that, I have also just literally written to them 30 minutes ago asking if they can make me a Mockingbird with a Gibson-style headstock! I like their rock series guitars, except the headstock. They could have made it pointier, more "metal", or like BC Rich guitars from the 80s with 3 tuners a side, which I would prefer. Let's see what they say!

      @@AG02024 Initially I wanted to change the headstock on my BS but I've gotten used to it and now with black tuners I actually like it much more.

    What are your thoughts on this after all the upgrades? I'm thinking of getting one to do the same thing with. I had 2 BC Rich Beasts back in the day that fit me perfect and I'm jonesing pretty bad over these lol

    • @_fifeusz
      @_fifeusz  Год назад +1

      Honestly it's still great. I did change the frets back in October 2022 (stock were fine, I wanted to learn a new skill) and just now am changing the tuners to locking ones from Harley Benton as well. Keep in mind that it's a Son of Beast and not a full scale Beast. But coming back to the original point - hell yeah, it's a great guitar. Very inspiring, powerful riff machine.

      @WarMachine_Studios Год назад

      @@_fifeusz All shit i wanted to hear, well minus not being a full scale lol but still hell yeah dude thanks. If i end up getting one, i'll probably mod that headstock a bit, but i'll be gutting all the electronics, blacking out the bridge and stopbar/knobs/nut and dropping in some D Activators. Eventually if i see a good deal pop up on a BC Rich neck i'll snag one to replace it.

    • @_fifeusz
      @_fifeusz  Год назад +1

      @@WarMachine_Studios I initially wanted to do the same to the headstock but got kinda used to it by now. The neck profile is what really does it for me here, it's very nice and chunky. It's really impressive at this price point and with some fretboard edge rolling it's honestly one of the better necks I've ever had.

    Great work on the guitar mate, I was considering doing the exact same thing, on this exact model (huge fan of BC Rich guitar shapes) I'm a pretty fresh player and my first guitar is pretty incredible as is and I don't wanna change it (bought used from a friend, a Jackson Warrior with upgraded humbuckers and stuff, setup in Drop C). My problem is that most beginner-friendly songs are all in E, and the fat gauge strings are not nice on my fingers XD so I thought to myself, I could get one of these to practice/learn stuff on, with a couple upgrades to make it more decent. I'll start with better strings (EB 10-48) and also swap the bridge for a SD Black Winter. Do I have to swap the tuners as well right away, or do the stock ones hold the tuning well? Is there something else I should consider, from your experience with it?

    • @_fifeusz
      @_fifeusz  2 года назад

      The stock tuners are decent, especially if you use the hook winding technique then they are very much ok. I changed mine purely for aesthetic reasons. Also - check out 10-52 string gauge, they cover all bases from drop C all the way to E standard for me. A great upgrade is changing the stock nut to a better one, I used GraphTech Tusq XL.

    • @TidusfromZanarkand
      @TidusfromZanarkand 2 года назад

      @@_fifeusz I see thank you very much. My friend has 10-54 on the Jackson he gave me, it does D, Drop C and C#, however the gauge is a bit too much for my fingers, since I have no callus yet. I think I'll go with the 10-48 and only play E on the Harley Benton, and take your advice and change the nut as well, cheers ^

      @@TidusfromZanarkand Hope that you'll have fun with yours. Keep in mind that the neck is on a more chunky, kinda C-shaped side so it might feel a little different from your Jackson.

      @@_fifeusz Thank you, you've been very helpful ^ I hope it turns out well, because I've seen quite a few negative reviews of these cheap HB 'heavy' models, and I fear it might arrive scratched or in poor condition. The Warrior I have, is a 98' (JP) black-glossy model, my friend bought it used as well, and it's literally without a scratch, incredibly uncommon for such 'pointy' instruments (interestingly enough, he probably has 5-6 guitars, all Vs and EX shapes, every single one but the Warrior has suffered some damage)

    • @_fifeusz

      @@TidusfromZanarkand It's always a lottery with cheaper guitars, however Thomann has a great return policy from what I've heard and they can be quite consistent with their packaging and quality. You can always contact their customer support for more information. I must say, I'm quite jealous of your Jackson, I myself have a 2020 Dave Davidson Warrior 7-string and it's a proper weapon, real joy to play as well.
