Have you ever received a drawing or assembly file from a colleague, but the referenced part files were not included? It is an easy thing to overlook and can cause major delays in getting the rest of the files. Luckily there are a few workflows that will allow you to open drawing files without references to view them, make minor edits like notes and dimensions, and even export as PDF files. Detailing Mode (previously called Quick View) and Large Design Review both open files without any reference documents. Options and operations are limited in these modes, but it can help you get access to the file without waiting on the rest of the files. eDrawings also opens SOLIDWORKS files without references but does not support saving drawings as vector PDF files.
Pro tip: use Pack and Go to create an efficient package or zip file containing all necessary files, including things like appearances or library features if they are linked.

What file format were you trying to save it as, and what program were you in when you tried to do it?
