How to Make a Loud Air Horn

  • Need a loud horn? I will show you how to make this DIY horn in just a little bit of time using items you probably already have around the home (everything is easy to find in stores if you don't have what you need). This approach repurposes plastic bottles but you can make them larger or smaller by using different size containers which will also give you different sounds. It is creative and fun so experiment and make if to fit your need. The size bottle used in the video makes a great noisemaker for celebrations, sporting events, having fun with kids, annoying your friends or roommates, being silly or just merely to have some fun making something for yourself. I have even seen this used quite successfully for pranks (you can make one loud enough to really make someone jump... so just in case, be careful who is around you).
    Helpful hint: thick plastic bottles are easier to work with! I recommend using wide mouth plastic bottles, 1/2" or 3/4" PVC (roughly 3" longer than the bottle), thick rubber balloons (rubber dish gloves work great too), rubber bands and masking tape.
    In future videos I will have louder and more elaborate horns... even one perfect for use with an air compressor. The basic principle and design are used for this horn, truck horns and even train horns.

    This design seems a lot easier to work with than another one I saw! Especially when connecting it to a hose.

    Neat. Theoretically you could make two of the deeper tones and with the right fittings put them on a dual connect direct drive compressor. I'd use better rubber but. As for me. I have two horns on my bicycle. i made my own brk lights turn signals an decided it needed a horn. I bought those cheap harbor freight plastic high pitch ones. If you take the trumpet off the smaller one and wrap electrical tape around it. Playing around with the tightness and seal. The additional length makes it deeper and also make almost a stutter sound

      Great points and I love the bike set-up ideas! I am actually posting another horn video this week where I used three different types of flexible material for the diaphragms. This next version gets great sound with volume. I have only used compressors with solid diaphragms in the past (i.e. DIY truck or train horns) but I'm going to keep "tinkering" and see what I can come up with next. Thanks for the comment!

    pro tip: let the flame of a lighter gently lick the sanded plastic to completely smooth it out where you sanded and make the mouth piece feel nicey NICE

      Another great alternative MBT! Much quicker than sandpaper too (gives it a nice rounded appearance). Thanks for the feedback!

    Sorry, I didn't get you, what did you do to make the sound louder?

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for asking (and for watching). The first thing I did was make the pen opening wider to allow more air to get into the bottle quickly - this helps to increase the sound. Second, make sure the diaphragm (balloon) is tight. It should sound like a mini drum when you tap it. The thicker the rubber the better it works too. Third, I played with the PVC diameter and length. Each changed the sound made but I found I got more volume out of the larger diameter PVC pipe. Hope that helps! Thanks again for checking out my video!

    have you considered lengthening the output and adding tuning holes? seems like that would be an interesting instrument....

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  7 лет назад

      I have done that with a different design & smaller diameter output but I like the idea allot. I think I will give it a shot and hook it up to a compressor for some extra fun! Great idea!!

    I typed a long comment an my RUclips updated on my phone an poof it was gone. lol
    I was thinkin... those cheap harbor freight air horns... If I retrofit a funnel which will create a longer trumpet then it should produce a deeper sound provided I make the new trumpet fit in the same fashion the old one did? Hmmm now I wanna try...

    • @DialedInDIY
      @DialedInDIY  8 лет назад

      Bummer about the lost type... I hate it when that happens. The video I'm posting within then next 12 hours is another horn build which does use a long funnel as a bell at the end and it really does make a significant difference. I'd love to hear how it works out on your HF horns if you try that approach.
